Mommy and Me

in All Posts

Good evening! No run for me tonight (bletch — I’m very disappointed) because I worked until 6:30 and by the time I was done, it was dark, dark, DARK!  It’s different if it’s light out when I leave, but I just feel funny doing a WHOLE run in the dark.   Maybe tomorrow!

Work really puts a damper on my life.  Can’t I just lounge around the house, plan my wedding, go for runs, eat good food, and sleep all day instead? Seriously.

Around 2:30, I had a snack…. you guessed it!  Yogurt + granola.

I went back for other 1/2 a serving. πŸ™‚

After work was done, I frantically cleaned the house because…. MY MOMMY IS COMING TO VISIT!  My mom is super silly.  She’s always the center of attention and the life of the party.  Here she is posing with Marines at the Marine Corp Half Marathon in October:

Fun Facts About My Mom:

  • She lives in Tennessee in a beautiful red brick house.
  • She was runner-up prom queen in high school.
  • Her dad helped build the atomic bomb in Oak Ridge, Tennessee in the 1940s.
  • She gets drunk off 1/2 a beer.
  • Last year, she lost 10 lbs. through portion control (go, Mom!)
  • She eloped with her high school sweetheart when she was 19.
  • She ate the same breakfast everyday for 10 years (bagel with cream cheese and strawberry jelly) and then switched to a new breakfast (Great Grains cereal), which she has eaten everyday since I was about 15.
  • She would like to date a smart and funny Democrat who loves animals, attends a Unitarian church, reads for pleasure, and lives in the area. Any takers?

My mom is in town because my "working" bridal shower is on Saturday.  The ladies will be helping me with favors, welcome bags, and programs.  Tomorrow, my mom is going with me to my first dress fitting and my up-do hair trial.  Yay!

After I cleaned and set up the guest room/home office for my mom, I made a quick and easy dinner.

I made a spinach salad with a giant glob of cottage cheese on top.

And on the side, I had good old fashioned "soup beans" (pinto beans), a total Southern classic.  All that was missing was cornbread!

See you tomorrow AM! Maybe I’ll squeeze in a light run tomorrow even though I’m in the taper timeframe for my 10K on Sunday.

What’s a fun fact about your mother, father, brother, or sister?

  • VeggieGirl November 6, 2008, 6:07 pm

Aww, so lovely that your mom is coming!!! Hooray!!! :0)

my fun fact: the day my parents met they fell in love and decided they wanted to get married. six months later they did. my mom planned her wedding, graduated high school, and got her driver’s license all in the same year (she was 18). AND they were from two different countries and had to speak English to communicate!!

  • Lyss November 6, 2008, 6:33 pm

OH MY GOD, you read my mind today. I literally woke up and told my fiance "I don't want to work anymore! I just want to lounge around the house in the mornings, plan our wedding, cook and exercise!" Of course, he said, "Dream on, babe." πŸ™‚ I will continue to dream… have fun at your dress fitting & updo trial! I can't wait to do those things. πŸ™‚

  • Erica November 6, 2008, 6:37 pm

p.s. your mom sounds super cool.

  • Runeatrepeat November 6, 2008, 6:39 pm

Yeah, I can’t run in the dark. Boo.

Ha, I always have “soup beans” at my house. My mom makes a pot of pinto beans once a week, but I had no idea southern people ate that too. We do it because we’re Mexican and pinto beans are just the thing eat.

  • ashley (sweet and natural) November 6, 2008, 6:41 pm

I love when family visits! The best.

My mom and dad have known each other since they were in the womb (their parents were friends). They went to school together from 4th grade to freshman year of college, were high school sweethearts and got married at 21 and 22. My dad always says he knew my mom was the one way back in those elementary school days.

  • Laura November 6, 2008, 6:46 pm

Your mom is so cute! Tell me who wouldn’t want to pose with Marines???

A fact about my mom is that she is only 4’11! My brother is 6’2, my sister and I are 5’8, and my other sister is 5’6. My mom looks like she doesn’t belong!

  • B_Hlthy November 6, 2008, 7:54 pm

my dad: navy seal for the explosive operation device (EOD) unit- he was basically dropped into the ocean from helicopter and dismantled bombs/explosive devices et.) He can hardly hear now….

my brother- i can’t tell you b/c its a similar “If I tell you I have to kill you basis”

My sister- told our brother he should be worried about showering instead of drinking water during the last hurricane they had….

My oldest brother- was born in hawaii and told me mustard was candy when I was 2, which I then ate and hated mustard for the next 22 years of my life

My mom- gets drunk off 1/2 beer, had 4 kids between the ages of 20-26, and is the most amazing person in my life.

I swear we are all on the same wavelength or something – I posted about my brother earlier today before reading your post! AND. I am seeing my mom tomorrow!
Have a great time with your Mom Caitlin!

I hate the “early darkness” too- total dampers evening runs!

  • Jordan November 6, 2008, 8:31 pm

My brother and I are BEST friends. My fun fact is that there’s ONE phrase he can say to me that will make me laugh no matter what… He always uses it to cheer me up.

[If you were curious, the phrase is “CHARLESSS NOOOOOOO!” You’d have to search for Juggernaut Bitch on YouTube to find out why it’s so funny.]

  • ttfn300 November 6, 2008, 8:44 pm

aw, have a GREAT time with mom!!! she definately sounds like a catch πŸ™‚ and i hate that it’s dark before i leave work… just need to get in the habit of getting up earlier!

hmm, my dad was on the school board for 9 years and b/c of this, actually gave me my high school diploma!

  • amanda November 6, 2008, 9:27 pm

awww this post made me smile πŸ™‚ first, because your love for your mom is so apparent and second, because both of my parents are coming to visit me this weekend yaaaaayyy!!!

my mom is adorable and she is bringing her bike along so that she can bike with me as i do my long run for the week – she really wants to see my running route in my new town πŸ™‚ a fun fact about her (which she will tell ANYONE who will listen is that she worked in the cafeteria in college and served green beans to bruce springsteen when he came to play a concert.

  • emily November 6, 2008, 9:42 pm

aww, fun question! My fun fact about my mom is that even though she’s a librarian, she makes almost all of my jewlery. Also, I call her “ladyface,” which confuses the crap out of people who overhear us on the phone!

  • wholefoodswholeme November 7, 2008, 4:16 am

your mum sounds adorable! i get used to it and think it’s normal but actually i think my parents are pretty funny – my friends always find them hilarious for some reason!

Aw! Hooray for your mom coming! I miss my momma so much… πŸ™

Fun facts about my family – my brother is 10 years younger than me!

  • Toni Jo November 7, 2008, 8:44 am

My mom went back to college after the age of 50 and now has a degree πŸ™‚ I’m so proud of her.

  • bitesoflife November 7, 2008, 9:20 am

My mom was widowed at 22 and went to school full time and raised my brother, which I think is awesome.

The age thing in my family is funny: mom 60, dad 50, brother 40, my sis-in-law 51, and I’m 23. We kinda have an odd thing going with numbers ! πŸ™‚

  • Heather May 18, 2010, 7:49 am
