Make Do

Me as a first-time mom:  Amazingly stocked dedicated diaper bag.  Diapers, wipes, first aid kit, extra outfits, toys, pacifiers, medicine, extra socks, back-up bottle, etc.  Never found without everything and anything I could possibly need to parent.

Me as a second-time mom: A couple pairs of diapers and a Ziploc bag of wipes thrown in my purse.  Usually missing some vital item.

Last week, Claire had a poopy blowout in the car.  I parked, opened the trunk of my SUV, and laid her down to change her.  I was feeling all pleased with myself because I did, for once, actually have a back-up outfit for her. But I go to grab the wipes and I can’t find any!  And there is poop all over my baby.  I kind of consider wipes the best invention on the planet (even non-parents should keep a box in your car – you can use wipes for so many things), so I scoured the vehicle looking for a back-up box.  Nope.  No wipes.  None at all.  So I ended up pouring my La Croix sparkling water all over Claire’s bottom and using a second diaper to wipe her clean while Henry yelled, “What are you doing with your drink?!?!?”  I couldn’t help but laugh through the whole thing – I must’ve looked ridiculous shaking an almost-empty can over her.  But desperate times, right?

Great workout yesterday!

In the pool:

250 meter warm-up

5 sets of 50 meters on 1:15 (basically, swim 50 meters in 1:15 including your break)

250 meter cool-down

On the bike:

45 minutes of toodling around while I read a book

That’s my Misfit Shine tracker strapped to my ankle!  Gotta log every stroke! Hah.

And hey, if you’re done with Ironman April, send me a photo of your completed training plan to be entered to win a prize (caitlinjboyle@gmail.com)!  I’m almost done, too!

We went strawberry picking yesterday – it was loads of fun.  Now we have a giant box of strawberries and I’m not sure what to do with it.  I’m thinking of making Oh She Glows Raspberry Chia Seed Jam Oat Crumble Squares but with strawberries.

That totally reminds me of the commercials with the first-time and second-time mom. I think the two I’m remembering are the one with the classical vs. rock music, and then the germs one! At least it makes for an entertaining story when Claire is older!

  • Britt@MyOwnBalance April 29, 2015, 6:44 am

Haha! I think as moms, whether first time or not, we have all had those experiences of “oh crap, what am I going to do now???” I think what you did was highly inventive!

Some great bits in this post! Unfortunate situation with your child but it happens to the best of us!

Those strawberries look absolutely delicious, a great addition to any healthy diet!

HAHAHA! That story is hilarious! And so true. My oldest son is a few months younger than Henry (Aug 19) and my youngest just turned one on April 2nd. We were coming home from a baseball game Sunday when my littlest turned ripe, really fast. We pulled off at a Sheetz to change him and lo and behold, amidst our 4 ft pile of junk covering our car we couldn’t find a single diaper. We ended up using water and another diaper to try to clean him off but it definitely wasn’t very effective as he ended up with a pretty wicked diaper rash, poor babe. Funny story? I swore I’d packed wipes and the next day when I was restocking my backpack for that day’s outing I found the container of wipes I knew I’d packed SOMEWHERE at the very bottom of the backpack. Ooops.

      LOL!!!

Girl that is a La Croix commercial waiting to happen! That lil baby was sprinkled with love adn the most divine sparkling water. I bet she smelled nice too 🙂 You’re doing great!

Ohhhh…it SNOWED here the other day (eastern Canada), and I am SO jealous of your strawberry picking. We won’t be able to pick tasty strawberries for ages!

  • Erin April 29, 2015, 8:46 am

I’ve had the same thing happen, but fortunately I had plain water. I have definitely used a clean diaper as a wipe!

I pick 20 lbs of strawberries during strawberry season (here in upstate NY that is June!) We do strawberry shortcake, cook them for topping on pancakes, and then I freeze the rest. Great for smoothies. And my almost 3 year old loves eating frozen berries! (and cherries, mango. Even peas!).

That is improvisation at it’s finest! You’re a great mom 🙂

  • Danielle @ Little Mama Big Life April 29, 2015, 9:17 am

Nice save with the sparkling water! I’m so with you on being less prepared the second time around! Its nice to be more relaxed and realize that life will go on if you’re missing something, but there are times that I miss my crazy packing ways! 😉

  • Kim April 29, 2015, 9:18 am

Love the butterfly picture! So cute.

  • Liz April 29, 2015, 9:24 am

I have 3 siblings and I’m number four…. I wonder how relaxed my mother must have been at the stage of three-and fourth-time mother….did we wear any diapers at all?! 😉
Other story: She said (and meant it honestly), she and my dad didn’t need to rush that often into the ER – with 3 little boys, hah!-, really, it wasnt that bad, ecetera ecetera. And then she started counting “There was this and this oh and he had that..” with each finger and on the second hand she was like “Oh my. Actually more than I remember”. SO funny! I guess time and the amount of children relate everything. Great car-story with Claire!

That story really made me laugh out loud and get all nostalgic. No more diapers around here but in some weird way I miss those days. Not the diapers I guess but just the babies. Don’t get me wrong, a lot of fun stuff comes with them getting older too..
You are a great mom even when you forget the wipes!

  • Liz April 29, 2015, 10:05 am

Loved the La Croix story! Some variation has happened to all of us.

I tried to email my Ironman April but it said the gmail account didn’t exist…

  • mary @ minutes per mile April 29, 2015, 10:34 am

that story is hilarious! i can’t wait to be a mom 😉

  • lisa valinsky April 29, 2015, 10:48 am

That diaper story is hilarious. Whatever works!

As for strawberries, I made a few kinds of strawberry sauce a few years back: http://www.lisavalinsky.com/2013/07/small-batch-preserving-strawberry-sauce-two-ways.html. It’s really delicious poured on oatmeal, yogurt, or ice cream, and you don’t need to worry about canning it or anything. Easy peasy!

  • Erin @ Her Heartland Soul April 29, 2015, 11:04 am

    haha hey that’s resourceful!

  • Jillian April 29, 2015, 11:22 am

I like your compression shorts! The black and turquoise looking ones. Also, we share a birthday 🙂 Happy belated birthday. I always enjoy reading your blog posts. The strawberries look so good! Smoothies on smoothies!

  • Jenn April 29, 2015, 11:51 am

Practically the same thing happened to me last week! I had picked up the two-year old from daycare and grabbed a couple extra diapers (just in case), but not wipes. We headed to my older son’s lacrosse practice. Of course then the toddler had a poopy diaper and there were nothing but four mangy dried out wipes in the car. I had to use the water from her sippy cup to wet the wipes and clean her up.

Then after dinner, I tried to change her diaper into a dry one before she fell asleep in the car on the way home and proceeded to rip the elastic tab right off! Back on went the wet diaper. Oh well…she survived!

My dad once poured my diet mountain dew into the car’s radiator when it overheated one summer. It got us home safely.

  • Kim April 29, 2015, 12:51 pm

I’ll never look at La Croix the same way again hahaha

  • Tara April 29, 2015, 1:08 pm

I’m not a parent yet, but the image of you pouring a can of sparkling water on a baby’s poopy bottom made me laugh out loud. Make do, indeed!

  • Lori April 29, 2015, 2:04 pm

Thank you for telling that story! I once pulled up to the farmers’ market with the same situation. Only I didn’t even have a back up outfit. And I wasn’t smart enough to use my water. I just put the baby (baby #2 of course) back I the car seat and drove home. My poor family had to listen to me beat myself up the whole way. I was *sure* that no other mom at the market had ever had such a ridiculous experience, they all had perfect mornings with their perfect babies all happy and comfy in their ring slings, …and all the other crazy things I tell myself when I’m feeling like I’m not the best mom. Thanks for keepin’ it real!!

  • Lawrence Price April 29, 2015, 3:22 pm

I recently tried La Croix Cherry Lime, if you haven’t make sure you do! Swimming is such an amazing workout, thanks for sharing the tracker you used, I’ll have to look into it!

  • Erin April 29, 2015, 4:43 pm

Freezer jam is another great thing to do with the extra strawberries. I’m told it’s really easy. My parents do it and we reap the rewards. The jam tastes so much better than store bought and there is usually way less sugar.

  • Lynne April 30, 2015, 4:45 pm

Speaking of diapers … how is Henry’s potty training coming along? I don’t think he’ll be able to go into pools now, right?

    • Caitlin May 1, 2015, 7:44 am

Slowly… It’s such a process. Why wouldn’t he be able to do pools?

      • Lynne May 1, 2015, 10:05 am

I thought children had to be potty trained to go into public pools. No diapers, right? At least I would not want to swim in a pool with a child in diapers … 🙂

        • Caitlin May 1, 2015, 10:45 am

I bet that’s the rule at some pools but most just say they have to wear swim diapers.
