Stuff I Did Today

in All Posts

Encountered a major traffic jam at the top of the stairs.

This happens every single morning.  The dogs are afraid to walk past Ferguson, who knows it and goes super slowly to screw with their heads.

Made a cup of coffee using my teapot and strainer.

Because I broke my coffee maker. Very sad.

Worked on the computer until Henry woke up.

I wrote half a freelance article, got through my emails, put up an Operation Beautiful post, and paid the bills.

Ordered a few of these animal prints off Etsy.

So, Henry’s big kid room has been quite the journey… I think I’m misplacing all my emotional baggage onto the design of this room because I truly stay up at night obsessing about it.  The level of anxiety I feel about designing this room is not normal.  Nope, not at all. I feel like if I get the design just right, he won’t mind being moved out of the nursery, becoming a big brother, and getting a younger sibling who sucks up my time and attention. I realize this is 100% false but – whatever. I’m a hormonal preggers. Hence why it took me forever to pull the trigger on this purchase.

Made the family breakfast.

Went on a hike with the Husband, Henry, and James.

Henry got tried really fast today and we ended up taking turns carrying him. We did about 45 minutes overall.

Was also in charge of carrying the big rocks.  Threw a few into the lake.

Went to my Dad’s house and helped him assemble two IKEA bookshelves

photo 4

The first one took an hour and a half and the second only took 45 minutes. Henry watching Air Buddies while we worked… I swear, I have watched Air Buddies approximately 1,000 times so far this summer. Make it stop.

Ate a ton of snacks.

Frantically made my kiddo lunch while he requested more drinks in different cups.

IMG_0288

Normally, I don’t fulfill requests like that but I guess I was feeling soft… He ended up with orange juice in two coffee cups and a tumbler of water.

Ate some kidney beans off his plate.

Ate my lunch.

Look at the pictures in this book and attempted to stitch together a semi-decent story.

I haven’t read the actual book myself yet and it’s too long to read to Henry. All I know is that the peach ends up in the ocean and then New York City.

And now I’m talking to you!

What did you do today?

For the big boy room, something that worked out for me without planning was having my almost 2-year-old help hang the decorations. We did a few together each day when I went out on maternity leave in March, and he fell deeply in love with the room. He would show my husband the new decorations each day when he got home from work. He moved into that room like it was no big deal at all. He was excited for it. We also started calling his old room the baby’s room immediately, even before the baby came.

I LOVE the dedication to brewing coffee. Hahaha. Though, it looks a little bit like all the fancy brew methods I’ve been hearing about, like Chemex and single cup brewing.

So far today, I went to work, finalized a big presentation the execs were giving this morning, and went home sick. I think I’m still recovering for food poisoning from last night (possibly?). So now I’m about to go curl up on the couch and nap it off.

      Ughhhh feel better!!!

Watched videos of buses on you tube with my toddler. Fed the ducks and went for a walk. Ate copious amounts of cereal. Washed newborn clothes ready for baby due in a few weeks. ‘Read’ the gruffalo 14 times – abridged for toddler attention span. Now off to bed! Good luck with H’s big boy room – too soon to see if it will help but we’re creating lots of ‘art’ for toddler room and new baby room to help my son feel involved – he’s choosing what goes where to make him feel more in control (hopefully) xxx

I would love to hear how the transition into a big boy room goes when it happens. We are in the same boat. Our second is due in March and my son will be getting a new room. I am terrified 1.) Because he is not the best sleeper and I dont want to mess up this good streak we are on. 2) I have no clue how he will do in a big bed and 3.) His new room has an attached porch that my husband is slowly slowly slowly renovating into a play room and I have no clue how it will get done in time. I need to redecorate his room, buy all new furniture and redecorate the nursery!! So hearing how it all works out for you will be awesome!!

Oh I will definitely share. I have almost all the same worries as you. Have you decided on a theme yet?

I was going to put him in a twin bed on the floor but I bought a craigslist toddler bed for $75. I hope it helps ease the transition.

      • Ellen August 6, 2014, 9:16 am

No theme yet…I will probably go to IKEA and see what they have. I love their kid stuff. He is really into cars, trucks and trains so maybe something around that. My son sleeps in a big bed for naps and does well. Im just scared of him getting out of bed all the time.

    Hi Caitlin,

I’m a long time reader but I think this is only my first or second comment. It is unrelated to what I did today but I just wanted to say how much I enjoy reading your blog! You are one of the most ‘real’ and relatable bloggers I have come across. You make healthy living seem so attainable. And of course, all the pet photos! Congratulations on baby #2, looking forward to seeing him/her on the blog! 🙂

As far as what I did today – just working at my summer internship (in graduate school).

    • Caitlin August 5, 2014, 5:05 pm

      Thank you sweet lady 🙂

  • Janelle August 5, 2014, 4:43 pm

Those animal prints are so cute!

  • Rachel August 5, 2014, 5:02 pm

I begrudgingly went to Wal-Mart to buy school supplies for my kids. Wal-Mart, while the scour of the earth, most definitely has the cheapest prices. My two kids actually behaved so that made the trip (slightly) less miserable. Can’t wait for school to start on Monday! <–I'm that mom 😉

  • Ashley August 5, 2014, 5:13 pm

I’m exhausted just reading this! You are a rock star, Mama!

  • Rebecca August 5, 2014, 5:15 pm

You have odd pets, though you probably already knew that. So funny to read about!

Today, I worked five hours as usual, and then I walked to church to work on some stuff for about an hour and a half until my dad came to pick me up on his way home from work. Now I’m thinking about napping for about an hour until dinner…

  • Joy August 5, 2014, 6:10 pm

What a fun post! I hope Henry’s room ends up being everything you hope for and more!

Today was a good one. I went for a bike ride, had an interview, did some strength training, worked on a freelance project, and then looked for books to put on hold at the library.

  • Laura @ She Eats Well August 5, 2014, 6:42 pm

I went on a run early this AM and then have been at my desk job allll day. But only 2 more days left! I start school (to become an RD) in a few weeks.

I think those animal prints are absolutely adorable 🙂

  • Amanda Perry @ Sistas of Strength August 5, 2014, 7:49 pm

We were just talking about James and the Giant Peach. I was telling my 3 year old about how I used to love that book!!!!! haha

  • Chantal August 5, 2014, 8:07 pm

I love this post so much!

Today I worked with kindergarten/pre-K teachers and we read a play/sang songs about agricultural engineers. Then I swam in a lake, had an ice cream sandwich after dinner, and got caught in a rainstorm. An atypical but awesome day!

  • Tricia August 6, 2014, 6:30 am

So I’m pregnant with #2 as well. I’m just about 12 weeks (FINALLY – my due date got bumped back when I thought I was 12 weeks. Oh the horror!). My son is 8.5 months old so I’m really not worried about his feelings during the transition. There will be one but because he’ll only be 15 months, I feel like it’ll be less painful for him compared to a 5 yr old. However, I have done ridiculous amounts of research on double strollers and finally know which one I want (the Kolcraft Contours Options LT Tandem). It’s on sale this week but I have an ultrasound on Monday. I just can’t bring myself to buy it until I see this baby again… which might be stupid because I could just return it. Emotionally, I couldn’t handle that though.

For us, whenever we have to change anything for either of our boys, it involves lots of discussion and letting them help make any choices when possible. We didn’t have to switch anybody out of rooms, though, which sounds like a big transition. We just moved the crib to another room, and put him in a “big boy” bed (read: twin mattress on a low bed frame). Do you absolutely have to move Henry? I’m sorry, you’ve probably already gone over the reasons why he’s being moved! I’m sure he’ll be adaptable. I don’t know anybody who loves change, but kids are so resilient. It sounds like you’re going to be doing a great job of prepping him, and I’m sure he’ll get used to the new digs eventually.

    • Caitlin August 6, 2014, 4:02 pm

No we don’t have to, I just feel like if I don’t, I’ll end up doing nursery for the new baby and then redoing Henry’s nursery in a year or two when he’s too old for the room. Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I don’t know, I’m so conflicted.

  • Jillian August 6, 2014, 12:49 pm

Omg! Henry is drinking from the mug with my book that I sent you (leading at the edge)!!! This just totally made my day! 🙂

  • Erin August 6, 2014, 9:57 pm

I had to comment..your state of mind in this post is hysterical..this is how I feel daily..I am glad I am not alone! Flashbacks to pregnancy ….I know you threw those rocks because of the coffee maker and the stress of print selection….ha! The inner struggle is real…… Seems like an awesome day though right? (Cue the guilt…about why we weren’t happier in the moment!)

  • Kate August 7, 2014, 12:55 am

No kidding: my go-to, anxiety-reducing movie to watch while flying is Snow Buddies. The Buddies (and their ridiculous plot lines) keep me calm.

  • MomHTP August 7, 2014, 10:04 am

Your home is beautiful, big, and I really like the minimalist look. Now, the backyard -what a transformation! Kristien and you really put in some thought and a “h…” of a lot of sweat and energy. Now it invites one out into the back and sit down for some nature time or lay down in the hammock and feel the breeze. Very nice.

  • Kristin August 7, 2014, 4:41 pm

I’m pregnant with #2 too, and also transitioning my toddler into his own bed. I totally understand the anxiety! Random question for you….how much coffee do you typically allow yourself to drink when pregnant/breastfeeding? I LOVE my coffee and am trying to stick to one small regular cup, but sometimes that just isn’t cutting it with working full time and my 2 year old. Just curious on your thoughts.

    • Caitlin August 7, 2014, 4:54 pm

I have something caffeinated everyday. I’m trying to have more tea than coffee but I’m seriously backsliding.

  • Jasmine August 7, 2014, 7:17 pm

You probably have all that anxiety because YOU were an only child.

I was the oldest of two. My brother being born was amazing to me. I wasn’t sure about it pre-birth, but when I saw him, it was L-O-V-E. I felt a fierce protectiveness that, sure, didn’t stop me from razzing him or being occasionally jealous, but honestly, he was my BABY all throughout my life. Even now that he’s an adult, I wish I could move mountains for him (I don’t, but that feeling is still there).

I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised. You know all that love you felt the first time you saw Henry? Well, that happens for older siblings too. The new baby isn’t just yours, it’s his too! 🙂

    Just my two cents. xo
