StitchFix for Maternity

in All Posts

I had some serious StitchFix growing pains during my first trimester (StitchFix is a personalized online shopping site; here’s a post describing it with pictures from one of my first fixes).  It was partially my fault – I gained weight pretty quickly and didn’t update my sizing, although I did tell them that I was pregnant.  But I really needed to change all my ‘smalls’ to ‘mediums’ and didn’t.  But there was also some funky styling going on – I got a few tops and dresses that really, really did NOT fit a pregnant person’s body.  It was frustrating because I love the idea of the service.

I made some tweaks to my style profile – mostly bumping up all my sizing info.  But I described my new body shape in the notes.  And I made very specific requests.  Lots more blousey shirts, no more tight tanks, and please, please – nothing that hit me in the middle of the bump!  Before, I kind of let the stylist have free reign, but that was clearly not working with pregnancy.  I’ve gotten two really good fixes since.  Although StitchFix doesn’t officially “do” maternity clothes, they try to make it work for pregnant shoppers.  And now that we’re ironed out the creases, I’m back to being satisfied with the service.

I’ve only seen one other pregnant StitchFix review so I thought I’d toss my latest into the hat.  Let’s start with the NO WAYS.

IMG_9914

Polka Dot Cross Back Top ($58).  This shirt was not my style, at all.  It was also too large in the neck.  The back was cute (a little criss-cross action) but the general shape was blah.  I felt like I was in pregnancy top from the 1970s.  Also – didn’t love the price point.

Henry, however, loved it.  (He gets super excited when he sees a StitchFix box because we drop everything and start trying all the clothes on in the hallway – hah!)

IMG_9911

Another reject – this Colorblock Hi-Lo Tank for $48.  I was so hopeful when I pulled it out of the bag because the colors and print are my style, but it’s a definite NO.  The “high” part of the shirt goes up too high for a bump – you could see my maternity panel!  And the color blocking around my breasts weren’t flattering.  So sad, but it went back in the box.  It would be really cute on a non-preggers person.

Okay… here’s are the YES PLEASE pieces (I don’t think I’ve ever kept three pieces before!).

Love, love, LOVED this maxi dress. I kept asking my stylist for a good maxi dress and she finally delivered.  At $88, it isn’t cheap at all, but it’s so soft and super comfy and light.  I struggle to find maxi dresses that provide full coverage up top so I really loved this dress.  I can probably wear this through the end of my winter pregnancy with a cardigan.  But the dress is a little long – I need to hem it.

The picture below is meh, but this top is great.  It’s really a nice color and pattern, and it’s soft and light.  It’s $54, which is on the higher side, but I think I could easily dress it up or down with the right bottoms.  I think I’ll max out of this shirt by 7 months or so, though.

And last, but not least, this light sweater ($48).  When I first pulled it out of the box, I thought, “Come on, StitchFix – a sweater in July?!”  But it’s a lighter sweater and will be perfect for movie dates or cooler September nights.  I’ll be able to wear this through the end of pregnancy and beyond.  Wahoo!

Another recent StitchFix maternity shirt was the orange top I wore at Henry’s birthday party.  I also got a pretty blue criss-cross one that that I wore to a business meeting a few weeks ago.  I will outgrow that one soon, but I like it because it will be an AWESOME nursing top (God willing).

So – in conclusion, I think StitchFix can work for pregnant women.  I just found it to be a bit trickier than when I was not pregnant because my body shape changed so rapidly, so my sizing and style preferences were impacted.  I hate shopping for clothes in malls, and I find maternity stores to be particularly nightmarish, so I continue to seriously adore the concept of StitchFix.  The bumps in the road (pun intended) were worth working through!

I love the blue polka dot shirt! Lol. I think it’s really flattering actually and I just love blue.

These are **really** expensive. I’m not sure I would purchase them for non-maternity wear, and I definitely would not buy them for such limited wear-ability. I’ve had very good luck with the larger sizes in Marshalls, Target’s maternity line, and even Lane Bryant.

    • Caitlin July 1, 2014, 9:03 am

My target maternity line blows!!! That’s all I bought with Henry but now it seems to have taken a nose dive at my store.

      • Alexa July 1, 2014, 1:48 pm

I agree, Target has not been great with maternity recently (besides a pair of skinny black pants I got, I wear them at least twice a week, if not more). I’ve found some cute items at Gap and Old Navy, and the prices are better than this. Of course with Old Navy, oftentimes the quality matches the prices. I really love the last shirt in your StichFix this month!

I love StitchFix too! I’ve gotten some really ugly pieces that aren’t close to my style at all, but I’ve also gotten some really great pieces. The most annoying thing is that everything I’ve bought so far has to be hand washed. Ugg. I’m not sure I’d do maternity because I feel like the pieces are so expensive that I’d want them to look cute after pregnancy too. I wish I could send you all my maternity clothes because my mom managed a Motherhood Maternity when I was pregnant and got a HUGE discount so I had tons and tons of maternity clothes. Hopefully I’ll use them again!

I am also pregnant and have been debating Stitch Fix for a while now, but think I am going to wait until post baby. Getting some new clothes may be great motivation to get moving and back into pre-baby shape! It would be awesome if SF had a maternity option, though!

  • Lauren July 1, 2014, 9:11 am

I’d say it was a success. The two things you kept look awesome!! I know Old Navy’s fabric is cheap and will probably fall apart after a year, but they have some steals right now in the “maternity clearance” section.

Love the striped dress and sweater! I really would like to find a maxi like that one, but no such luck. I tried on a knee length one yesterday, but it was awful! If it didn’t have a weird rouching in the back it would have worked, but made me feel like a tent! For now I’m wearing tanks and long/short maxi skirts for pregnancy.
Henry is too cute. They should make a stich fix or similar for kids. 🙂

I actually like the first top w/ the polka dots! You look so cute! And that maxi dress is adorable!!! Hope to see it in person soon. 🙂

  • Rachel July 1, 2014, 10:15 am

Love the sweater!! Can you tell me the brand and/or where to buy it?

    • Caitlin July 1, 2014, 10:51 am

I think they are stitchfix brands so they are only available through the service. Someone correct me if I’m wrong.

      • Jenn July 2, 2014, 3:07 pm

The label says what brand it is. I’ve found that most of the StitchFix brands I’ve gotten are available at places like Macy’s.

        • Caitlin July 2, 2014, 5:05 pm

Oh really? Okay let me look lately!

  • Molly July 1, 2014, 10:15 am

I think I got your first trimester box of mediums 🙁 I was dissapointed in my last two. Even when I asked them for things more form fitting! I am hopeful for my next one.
Love your pics! and the maxi dress is perfect!

  • Lindsay July 1, 2014, 10:19 am

Can you tell me the name of the blue maxi dress so I can request it? Thanks!

  • Britt@MyOwnBalance July 1, 2014, 10:26 am

I actually like the first top! But I also really like polka dots. The maxi dress is very very cute! I stopped using Stitch Fix when I got pregnant but I might try it again!

  • Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries July 1, 2014, 10:34 am

Cute stuff! I especially love the maxi dress and the light sweater – both are totally my style. I love the concept of Stitch Fix too … one of these days I’d love to be able to give it a go!

  • Sara @ LovingOnTheRun July 1, 2014, 10:53 am

I love love love Maxi dresses! Pregnant or not I think they are great for all women!

  • Steph July 1, 2014, 12:29 pm

I actually got the high low top in my last stitch fix and I love it! I agree though that it wouldn’t be good when pregnant. I always wonder though how many people are getting the same top as me and this is the first time I’ve seen one! Love the maxi dress, super cute!

  • Caroline Niziol July 1, 2014, 1:10 pm

Hi Caitlin! Love the maxi dress. They are so hard to find for the short among us! I rarely even try them on. 🙂

Your nursing side comment made me wonder – will you share with your readers your plan for feeding baby #2? You were one of the very few people I ever heard of EPing. I have been EPing for my baby who is now 10 months since he was born. I would so much rather nurse the next one, since it was latch issues that drove us to EP instead of direct feeding. Your EP posts were so helpful to me and I’d love to hear about your thought process for next time as I’m also contemplating what I’ll do for the second round. 🙂 Thanks!!

    • Caitlin July 1, 2014, 1:11 pm

I really hope to breastfeed. I feel a little more prepared on what my challenges will be. But that being said, i am okay with pumping again for this baby. I probably won’t do it as long though.

      • Caroline Niziol July 1, 2014, 1:17 pm

Makes sense to me! There are women in my pumping group who pump for a baby and have older toddlers. I have no idea how they manage that. Thanks for your reply and best of luck!!

  • Kacia July 1, 2014, 2:08 pm

    YES!!! that maxi!! AMAZEBALLS.

And I have that mint top, but in grey and black!! and my little sis just got it {not preg} in the same mint – and i LOVE IT!! it’s SO comfy with or without a bump! I think i’ll be wearing it a LOT post partum!! I got it before I bumped {ha, see what I did there? ;)} up my size, so it’s getting a little short with the growing babe!

    Congrats!!!! You look so great!

  • Lauren | Breathe & Nourish July 1, 2014, 3:46 pm

Super into that maxi dress! I love it. These season I’ve sort of ditched the shorts and opted for maxi dresses when I don’t want to wear jeans.

I’ve also had more success with Stitchfix over time. Sadly I had to stop my subscription though because I’m on a super tight budget this summer, but I’m so glad you’ve found multiple items you like!

  • Jaime July 1, 2014, 4:00 pm

It all looks fine, but nearly $90 for a maxi dress that is way too long and needs hemming? You could find those anywhere for $20! And $54 for a knit top? I could never afford those prices 🙁

    • Caitlin July 1, 2014, 4:13 pm

Yes, I agree – pricing is up there. But I think the quality is up there too. It is not a $20 maxi dress. Also, if I was childless and had loads of time to shop, I probably wouldn’t be so into the service, but it’s hard for me to find time to go the store and impossible to shop with Henry. So I think there’s a definite niche for it!

  • Sara July 2, 2014, 10:17 am

I have that light sweater (got it in my last Fix!) I thought the same thing you did, but it works well for work. I usually only keep one item from the boxes because I’m too cheap, ha ha!

  • Katy July 2, 2014, 2:40 pm

very cute stuff, love the maxi! I am 16 weeks pregnant and have been wearing a maxi dress and maxi skirt none stop, so easy, cute, and comfy! I have had a lot of luck using zulily for maternity clothes. There is some really cute stuff and the price points are good. The down side is that you have to wait awhile for your clothes to come in the mail because they get their good prices because they order in bulk and you need to check the website often because sales come and go quickly and the cute stuff and s/m sizes go fast. I am really enjoying reading your posts about pregnancy as I am a few weeks behind you and it’s my first! 🙂

  • Emily July 5, 2014, 5:17 am

I received the same striped sweater in my last Fix, and I love love oh so love it! I too attempted a “preggo” fix, and was surprisingly pleased with the results. Except they sent me skinny black jeans. I kept them for after baby, because the material is super nice, but really?

  • Kelly July 9, 2014, 3:57 pm

I got that maxi dress in my fix too! LOVE IT.
