Dave!

Yesterday was a fun day that ended (really, really late) with an awesome concert.  Talk about a fun Tuesday!

Double Rainbow!

Our morning was spent running around – literally and figuratively.  Henry and I ran/walk about 2.5 miles.  Pushing the jogging stroller is NO JOKE lately.  I felt really good afterwards, though.  Don’t you love that workout sweet spot – when cardio makes you feel super awesome and strong?

photo 1

Then, my dad came over and ran a few errands with me.  We went to the library and checked out a few kiddie books about starting school.  Henry’s preschool starts in just a few weeks, so I’m trying to talk up the concept of school!

photo 2

Fun fact:  Once, when I was about 8, I got stuck in the library elevator – it jammed somehow and it took them forever to free me.  I was with a friend but it was so. not. cool.

Onto the really fun {adult} part of the day – we went to the Dave Matthews Band concert with a group of friends!

photo 3

Another fun fact:  I have been to about 4 Dave shows, including one where he opened for the Rolling Stones back in 1997 or so (awesome!!!).  But the Husband has been to about 14 – FOURTEEN.  He went to a show last year; I haven’t been since I was 20.  It was cool to be back!

Obviously, we showed up when they opened the parking lots (4 PM) and tailgated for a while.  Gotta make use of our tailgate gear during the football off-season!

It was a really easy tailgate to prepare for because our friends split dinner duties.  We were in charge of hamburgers so I made Emily’s black bean burgers (per the usual; I can make these in my sleep now).  Heather made two yummy dips to eat with chips, and Nicole made her grandma’s famous potato salad.

We hung out for a few hours and played tailgating games.  Here’s a new-to-me game – Frisbeer!  You try to knock ‘beer bottles’ off poles using a Frisbee.  Very fun.

We were one of the last groups to head into the concert – we walked in around 7:20 thinking he wouldn’t start for another hour or so, but he began to play at 7:30.  I sent a silent THANK YOU up to God for a concert that actually began early.  YOU ROCK, Dave!!! <— Signs you are getting older.

We sat on the lawn, which is always an inteeeeeresting people watching experience.  SO. MANY. DRUNKS.

He played almost all the big favorites!

In fact, here’s his complete setlist from last night – seriously, how great of a setlist is this?!

Do you love Dave?  How many times have you seen him live?  What’s your favorite song?  Mine is So Right.  I saw him play it live once and nearly died.

I’ve seen Dave twice and they were great shows! I have a ton of favorites but I think my absolute fave is Lie in Our Graves. Soooooo good 🙂

  • Sara @ LovingOnTheRun July 23, 2014, 8:58 am

Looks like you all had a wonderful night! 🙂

  • katie July 23, 2014, 9:57 am

I haven’t seen Dave, but if he came to town, I would totally attempt to get tickets!

  • Rosie July 23, 2014, 10:15 am

I first saw Dave live when I was 14 and I’m now 26. I’ve lost count at this point to how many I’ve been to. It’s got to be at least 15 or 20? There were a few years in there where I went to both his summer and winter tours! I think it’s fair to say Dave has changed my life (which sounds a bit ridiculous? oh those lyrics of his). But I just love him! I’m going next month in fact! You had a great set list, makes me super excited. There are so many good songs it’s hard to choose but I’d have to say Seek Up is one of my absolute favorites. Loving Wings is incredibly sweet and I also love #41. Glad you had so much fun!!

“Preschool” seems like a fairly common thing in the USA – at least it seems that way with the bloggers I follow! In Canada, at least with the people I’m surrounded by, kids don’t generally go to kindergarten until they’re 4. The concept of preschool is just not something I’ve been exposed to. Is preschool just a code word for daycare? Is it different than kindergarten?

    • Caitlin July 23, 2014, 10:41 am

There’s more of a learning component than daycare; it’s structured more like a school with a classroom and teachers and lessons etc. I don’t have a lot of familiarity with daycare though so I think that’s the difference. Oh and the difference between preschool and kindergarten is you have to pay for preschool 🙂 it’s usually private (through a church or a learning center). It’s not part of the public school system. I didn’t go to preschool until I was 4 but I don’t know if it’s more common to enroll now or what. Henry is going this year only because I work from home and I am having another baby… I really need some outside childcare or I would have to stop working totally. That’s probably why you see a lot of bloggers do it, too, we work from home and when the kids stop napping, we need to find some sort of childcare so we can work.

      • Maryea {happy healthy mama} July 23, 2014, 11:29 am

Also daycare is usually 5 days a week full day (during the working parents’ hours), while preschool usually starts with 2-3 half days the first year. Is that what Henry is doing?

        • Caitlin July 23, 2014, 2:13 pm

My preschool has a full 5 day option too, but Henry will be doing 3 half days to start. 🙂

          • Andrea July 23, 2014, 11:38 pm

That makes sense! I don’t even know how you manage to work from home with “just” one baby to look after…I can’t even work from home and I just have a dog. Heh.

          • Caitlin July 24, 2014, 2:25 pm

Haha I don’t really know either, truthfully.

    • amc July 23, 2014, 4:24 pm

There’s many day care models here in the US: nanny, home care, family help, large national center, etc. For the most part, I would say that the large day care centers naturally transition to the preschool model that Caitlin references as the kids get older. My son is in part-time day care at a center and he has lessons on the ABCs, reading, identifying colors, motor skills. However, some parents may be inclined to do a church-based preschool which would likely also teach religious topics. I guess my point is that there are a lot of options and flexibility.

In my opinion (and I’m not saying this is the case for Caitlin or any other commenter), sometimes parents are more comfortable saying that their children are at preschool rather than day care. Perhaps that is why you see it more often? In my experience they are very similar, but of course that is only one experience (with a daycare center that I love!).

      • Grace July 24, 2014, 8:39 am

Technically preschool is for four year olds to prepare them to enter kindergarten the following year. there are free, state-funded preschool programs throughout the country including programs like Head Start. And only recently has the idea of private preschool for 3-4 year olds been introduced. Daycares with educational-based programs for young toddlers (2-3) have started to co-op the term preschool for the reasons that amc stated, but I think they are still technically daycares.

  • Shivon July 23, 2014, 10:30 am

In Canada we call it beersbie! but we usually use random sticks and our empty bottles! I don’t know if you can buy the game here!

  • Elissa July 23, 2014, 10:35 am

My husband would be so jealous of your great night. He’s been to 19 Dave concerts and has #20 already planned. His favorite song from Dave is #41. Hope you can catch a nap today!

  • Melissa July 23, 2014, 10:40 am

Ugh, LOVE seeing Dave live! My boyfriend and I have seen him two years in a row now in Philly. He plays so well for so long, I’m pretty sure he’s actually a machine…

Right now, I’m loving Spaceman 🙂

  • Ellen July 23, 2014, 10:47 am

One time I was running around Greenlake in Seattle, finishing a 6 mile run, when I literally almost ran into Dave! He was crossing the path to throw something away and I barely missed him. I was sweaty and tired so no fan-girling occurred but it’s a fun story. 🙂

    • Caitlin July 23, 2014, 10:47 am

      Ahhh!!

  • Laura July 23, 2014, 11:02 am

LOVE DMB, and have been wanting to see him in concert for some time now. I haven’t had the opportunity too and was especially heartbroken this summer when I wasn’t able.

Favorites include: Lie in Our Graves, Crush, Crash into Me, Grey Street, So Right and You and Me (I want this to be my first dance song at my wedding someday).

  • Kate July 23, 2014, 11:18 am

I saw him last year in Lake Tahoe and I’m going to see him in August in Berkeley. I love Ants Marching and Grey Street. Fun fact: his niece was a year ahead of me in me college and the same major. We had two classes together. I went to her year’s graduation, since I had a bunch of friends in that graduating class, and I saw Dave in the audience!

  • Maryea {happy healthy mama} July 23, 2014, 11:23 am

I’ve only been to one Dave concert and it was not a great setlist. I would have loved this one! I’m jealous. 🙂

  • TJ July 23, 2014, 11:37 am

Can I ask if all of your friends are vegetarians? If not, how do they feel about the ‘burgers’?! I’m thinking if they’re not vegetarians, they would be like, where’s the beef? 🙂

    • Caitlin July 23, 2014, 2:12 pm

Hahah see AY’s question – someone else asked this too! One of the dudes brought some burgers. But my friends are pretty open people and wouldn’t have thought twice about BB burgers in lieu of meat.

  • Rachel July 23, 2014, 11:37 am

That is an awesome setlist! I am seeing him this Saturday in VA so I’m super excited. This will only be my second Dave show but as someone else commented, his music has changed my life! My favorite songs are #41 and Lying in the Hands of God.

  • Marie July 23, 2014, 11:40 am

Ugh, I love Dave, but they rarely come to Canada 🙁 My friend played Crashed into me for her «walking down the aisle» song, so I think it’s my favorite for now. For long runs, I really like to put their live concerts as my playlist… «You might die trying», hehe

  • Breanne July 23, 2014, 11:54 am

Oh goodness, that picture of Henry with your dad?! So cute!

Epic set list!! I’ve never seen Dave, but it looks like it’s a great concert. Grey Street is probably my favorite as it takes me back to a very special moment in college. 🙂

  • AY July 23, 2014, 12:22 pm

Fun day! Do you have any tips on convincing friends to eat things like bean burgers (in lieu of more traditional options) at events like this? Or perhaps they are all vegetarians?

    • Caitlin July 23, 2014, 2:09 pm

Well, half of those people are vegetarians. Actually, I think someone brought burgers that got thrown on the grill too after I cooked the veggie ones. But a few of the meat eaters ate the BB burgers! My friends are kind of hippie/alternative people so it’s not hard to convince the omnivores to try ‘weird’ foods… But I would say that, if I was bringing it to a more mainstream group, I would just offer it up as an option and not really make it into a big deal. If it’s a delicious recipe, people will eat it!! Right? 🙂 BB Burgers are a good place to start because it’s not TOO strange.

  • Carolina John July 23, 2014, 12:35 pm

I saw DMB once when I was in college – around 1995. Small 1000 seat nightclub, and Rusted Root opened up for them. it. was. awesome.

  • Kerri July 23, 2014, 1:11 pm

Hey! I’m a longtime reader of your blog and was SOOOO happy to see you playing Poleish! It’s actually my brother’s company (poleish.com) and I love to see it showing up around the country. I know you and your hubs love tailgating as much as my family does! If you ever want your own set… just let me know! Happy playing 🙂

    • Caitlin July 23, 2014, 2:07 pm

Um, awesome!!!! That is super cool. I’m impressed 🙂 🙂

  • Laura @ She Eats Well July 23, 2014, 1:14 pm

LOVE Dave. I have only seen him once. I love his old stuff, especially Ants Marching, Grace is Gone (tears), and Crush. Looks like an amazing concert!!!

  • Joanna July 23, 2014, 1:21 pm

Nice tailgating gear! I’m a hurricane too! U!!

    • Caitlin July 23, 2014, 2:07 pm

      UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

  • Domi @ Eat, Pray, Lift July 23, 2014, 1:56 pm

I really enjoy Dave Matthews Band and have since I was a little kid. One of his early albums was in a batch of old CD’s my uncle was getting rid of, and my siblings and I somehow got our hands on the box and claimed it as our own. Haven’t seen him live yet, though…someday!

  • Amy July 23, 2014, 2:06 pm

I love Dave! I’ve been to 5 concerts, back when I didn’t feel too old going to a concert. My fave is a tie between Two Step and Lie in our Graves.

  • Lauren July 23, 2014, 3:41 pm

Oh how I love Dave. It’s actually how John and I met! I’ve been to 23 shows but my husband has been to 41!!! Crazy right! We only got to see him once this year in Hartford but I am LOVINg the new setup with half acoustic/have full band. He starts early because there is no opening act but you get a whole extra hour too! I hope they always do this setup.

  • CampingGirl July 23, 2014, 5:02 pm

Seeing Dave Matthews is on my bucket list!! I would love to see him live. My fav song at the moment is Gravedigger.

  • Lee July 24, 2014, 7:52 am

I have been to probably 30+ Dave shows. My favorite song, which they very rarely play live for some reason, is You Never Know.

  • Shelly July 24, 2014, 11:13 am

I’ll see my 49th Dave show on Friday and my 50th on Saturday! Glad you had fun!! You guys are tailgating pros!

  • Lori July 24, 2014, 4:54 pm

Fun! (though I’m sure slightly exhausting for you). I have never been a huge Dave fan, but I do like quite a few of his songs. A few months ago my sister made me a CD with some of his hits (am I the only one using CDs still?) and it was the funniest thing – my son, about 17 months at the time, decided he was a major Dave fan! His favorite song was Satellite. He would make us put it on every single night after dinner and would LIGHT UP and dance around when that song started (I’m sure you know the instrumental beginning…). It was the cutest thing ever! Then he became a demanding crazy toddler and wanted us to replay the beginning over and over and would throw a fit if we let it play or put on another song, so ended our nights of after dinner Dave 🙂

  • Deb July 24, 2014, 9:48 pm

I love everything about this post! In Vermont, frisbee is called poleish horseshoes (and we play we ski poles). Such a good game. I have been to 34 DMB shows (my husband has me beat) and I am super jealous you got to hear STJL that’s my all time favorite. I’ve heard it live quite a few times but it never fails to make me happy especially because not many people know it.
