Three Things

Thing One:

Next time you make boxed mac and cheese, instead of using milk to mix up the powdered stuff, use plain Greek yogurt.  It’s so  much creamier and tangier, plus you get extra protein and probiotics.  I think one of the worst problem-that-isn’t-really-a-problem is runny mac and cheese, so this is a perfect way to avoid it.

Another problem-that-isn’t-really-a-problem?  When the gas station machine says, “Please see cashier.”  Gah…

Thing Two:

An AMAZING reader named Leatitia mailed Henry some Thomas the Train pajamas and a Thomas toy.  I have not been able to pry the toy out of his hands since (and it was equally challenging to get those PJS off him).  But he really adores the little train!  The only thing missing is the train table… He plays with one at the gym childcare so I don’t want to get him one for home (it’s the #1 reason he happily runs into childcare).  But I had this serious stroke of mommy genius when I realized that I could make ‘tracks’ with blue painters tape… I wound it all over the rug, under the chairs, over pillow mountains, through the table legs… It kept him occupied forever, especially when he realized he could pull up the tracks and move them around.

My living room is now covered in tape, but that’s okay!  It’s even more awesome than the homemade ball pit in the pack in play…  And that was pretty darn cool.

Great idea on the painter’s tape! I loved those little Matchbox/Hot Wheels cars when I was a kid, my mom made me a city to drive my cars around on a big white sheet (she drew things on it with a Sharpie). Much cheaper than the car mats they sold at Toys R Us and was easy to pick up when company came over. 🙂

I had a gas pump tell me to see the cashier too and had to prepay for gas last week. Kind of annoying. I was using a card but apparently it didn’t want to take my card. I’ve never had to prepay before, so that was a new experience. Not difficult, just kind of inconvenient. Sigh.

Hm, maybe I’ll try yogurt next time I make mac-n-cheese. Sounds a little different! And right now is all about different in our house food-wise. Dad has been trying to use more turkey in our meals rather than beef, because he’s on this whole “no dark meat” kick right now thanks to a health campaign at work. It’s really not a big deal, because tonight’s meal tasted exactly like the beef version he made a while back. It’s just kind of odd. But then, he works for a turkey company, which means we get turkey products cheap from the company store, so I guess it works out. 😛

Leatitia, you are amazing and so thoughtful! Wish I was on the floor (at the island of Sordor) with Henry playing with Thomas & making up imaginary friends along the rails. That painter’s railway track was a great idea, Caitlin. Henry can be heard all the way over here in Tennessee saying “up the hill, down the hill…” as he moves Thomas along the rails. How sweet.

    • Leatitia April 29, 2014, 2:06 pm

      that’s so sweet! thank you!

… “the island of Sordor is surrounded by beautiful blue seas…” 🙂

All awesome ideas! I just gave birth to our second son last week and I am totally going to do the pack and play ball pit and the painter’s tape idea when the time comes. My 5 year old went through a very short Thomas phase but we had inherited a ton of Thomas stuff from my nephew so no money was wasted. Seriously, the tape idea is genius. Does Henry like dinosaurs? That is one thing that my 5 year old has loved since he was 2 and still plays with today. LEGOS is another passion

  • Reenie April 29, 2014, 11:59 am

What a great idea about your blue train track!! 🙂

  • Amanda April 29, 2014, 12:12 pm

Loving your mac and cheese idea!!

It drives me crazy if I have to go inside the gas station. There’s a reason I pay at the pump!

Genius idea! Both the painters tape and the ball pit.

  • Louise April 29, 2014, 12:43 pm

My brother LOVED Thomas and would have had a meltdown (the good type) over such pajamas!

P.S. In the home of Thomas ‘the train’ (the UK) we call him Thomas the Tank Engine – how strange he had a name change!

    • Megan April 30, 2014, 2:55 pm

It’s still Thomas the Tank Engine in the US. People just say it wrong (my husband included). Drives me crazy.

  • Shelly April 29, 2014, 12:57 pm

Thanks for the mac & cheese idea! That sounds amazing.

  • Lauren @ Focused To Be Fit April 29, 2014, 3:40 pm

OMG the greek yogurt in mac idea….sheer genius! I love it!

  • Stephanie @ Whole Health Dork April 30, 2014, 12:16 pm

Such a great idea about the yogurt in mac and cheese! I recently used it per recipe in mashed potatoes and it made them so creamy. Plus, extra protein doesn’t hurt!
