I Forget To Drink Water

in All Posts

This photo sums up my Sunday:

IT WAS GLORIOUS.  We did absolutely nothing but hang out on the deck for houuuuurs.  The Husband and I desperately needed a break; work has been wild for both of us.  Doing nothing was exactly what we were craving.

The things about the above photo that make me smile:

My Husband mug – A gift to me from my mom for a Christmas a few years back – I love drinking coffee of out Kristien’s face!

Cucumber water – more on that below

The doggie toenail clippers – it was toenail day for ALL my pets, which almost as much fun for me as it was for them…

My ratty but favorite sweatpants. I will never throw those things away, I swear.

The stereo, which was blasting Dave Matthews Band. We just bought tickets for this summer’s show!

The chipped toenails – I NEVER paint my toenails anymore because toenail polish removal is one of those beauty upkeep things that fell to the wayside once I had a child.  Easier just to not put it on than remember to take it off promptly. I painted my nails a few weeks back when I was in Miami, and as I did it, I remarked, “This will probably be on my toes until June…”  So true.

And – of course – my little sun hat sweetie. When I snapped that picture, I think he was dropping cucumber circles into his water.

So – speaking of cucumber water.

Here’s another habit that’s fallen to the wayside since becoming a mom – drinking water!  A friend recently joked to me that she never thought she could forget to eat until she had a baby, and I feel the exact same way about hydrating.  So important, yet so easy to forget about.  So I’ve been making a real effort to drink more.

I have THREE tricks to ensure I drink water:

Spice it up with cucumbers (my fav), strawberries, and lemon.

Fill a big pitcher in the morning and make it my goal to finish the jug by the end of the day.

Drink a glass of water with every meal and an entire bottle while working out = that’s 4 glasses right there.

Do you struggle to remember to drink water, too?  What’s your secret weapon for ensuring you stay hydrated?  I feel thirsty as I write this – time to go get a drink!

Jug of water! That’s what I do too. I fill a jug in the office kitchen at the start of the day and tell myself I have to finish is before I leave work… then usually a water bottle at the gym and maybe a glass of water at home (morning before work or evening before bed typically). I struggle with water on weekends because my work plan works so well! 🙂

Love Henry in his sun hat — what a cutie! 🙂

I’m the same way with my toes.. but I can’t be without polish- I hate the way my toes look when they are naked! Instead I literally just keep reapplying the same color over the chipped stuff.. whatever dude.. no one is getting close enough to my toes to notice that there might be 12 layers of polish on there- and from a distance.. they look nicely (and freshly) painted 😉

I try REALLY hard to get enough water but I’ll admit I struggle with it too!

I give myself a treat! So I get to have a flavored bottle of water once I finish two plain ones. That makes me get through the plain ones in order to get the tasty one! I also make sure I drink an entire glass at lunch, dinner, and after dinner. Overall I tend to get in 80+ ounces each day. 🙂 (all my bottles are 32 oz Nalgene bottles) Now I look forward to my flavored water every day, and I rarely forget to drink up…now if I could only remember to eat!

I use the WaterMinder app. I always thought I drank enough water until I actually input the amount! You can set it to remind you at certain times.

My sodastream is really the only way I drink water. I haaaate plain water…with a passion. So, I carbonate it and add lemon. Not the best for my teeth nut better than being dehydrated.

    • Caitlin April 15, 2014, 7:41 am

I forgot about my sodastream! I need to pull it out of the garage!

  • Jenny April 14, 2014, 9:43 pm

Don’t sip, just chug the glass down! I keep a glass on the counter in the kitchen and just try and fill it up and chug often.

Ahh..i have been so bad about drinking water lately too!! Today, for example, I realized around 11am that I hadn’t had a sip of water since around 8am.

I definitely find that keeping a LARGE water bottle with me all day helps.

We’ve started doing flavored water for guests at work, and sometimes I grab some too. The cucumber is usually pretty good, and the strawberry. Anything else I kind of avoid because it’s too sour. Or add sugar. But I’m not a huge fan of flavored water for some reason so that idea doesn’t work all that well for me.
I forget to drink enough water some days too. I can tell when I haven’t had enough and try to make up for it, but it doesn’t always work. I’m always carrying a water bottle with me, it’s just that I don’t always take the time to drink it. I do find that the more water I drink, the more I WANT to drink water. It’s like a craving.
When I worked all day in the summer, I’d try to finish a 12-ish oz bottle by noon (sometimes I brought the 24oz), refill it at lunchtime, and try to finish at least half or three quarters by 3pm. Some days it didn’t get drunk all the way, and other days I went through more than two bottles full! Just kind of depended on the day.

I used to have trouble drinking enough water during the day. Until I started refilling tons of waterbottles and keeping them in the fridge for easy access.

When you wrote about toenail polish I started laughing out loud because I used to do the exact same thing! Have you ever tried Jamberry nail wraps? They are awesome because they don’t chip or smudge and are so quick and easy to put on. They have been a lifesaver keeping my nails looking nice after baby. If your interested in trying them I can send you a sample.

My sister-in-law’s NYE resolution for this year was to drink more water. She has achieved her goal by downloading and using the app called Plant Nanny. You plug in your personal details, it tells you how much water to drink everyday, you pick a plant, and then you keep your plant(s) alive by drinking your water. It has reminders so that you don’t forget. She loves it and swears by it. She’s gotten into a very regular routine of consuming enough water everyday.

    • Caitlin April 15, 2014, 7:40 am

That sounds so fun – downloading now 🙂

I absolutely forget to drink so I fill up a 24-oz jug before work as soon as it gets low, fill it up immediately. Seeign a full glass sitting there all day forces me to sip on it.

  • Kelly April 15, 2014, 6:54 am

My trick to drinking enough water is that I save any fun drink (except coffee) until I’ve had my water for the day. I aim for about half my body weight in ounces daily (so around 65-70oz a day) and then after that I will drink whatever I want.

    • Caitlin April 15, 2014, 7:39 am

      Oh that’s a good idea!

  • jill April 15, 2014, 7:39 am

Gatorade water bottles! The big green ones. We keep half a dozen of them filled in our fridge at all times, and our 6 year old and 15 month old (he can lift ’em) use them too. That’s how we stay on top of hydration at home. At work, we have water coolers, and (for some reason) red Solo cups. I feel like I’m at a kegger half the time, but it does help my water intake to have it readily available.

  • Elizabeth {Positively Healthy} April 15, 2014, 8:40 am

I drink a lot of water! I always have a huge water bottle by my side and make sure to take it with me whenever I go anywhere. I act like my water bottle is my phone, always by my side!

  • Erin April 15, 2014, 9:21 am

I’m trying to be more productive without deadlines at work and drink more water. So I set a timer for 90 minutes and try to work uninterrupted straight through and then when the timer goes off, I get up and my reward is to walk to the kitchen and get a nice tall glass of water. That means that in a work day I’m drinking at least 4 classes of water in addition to my meal time one.

  • Laura@SneakersandSpatulas April 15, 2014, 10:29 am

I keep a water bottle at work and I make myself finish two bottle fulls every day before leaving. Sometimes that leaves me chugging a lot of water in the last hour but I get it in!

  • Amanda April 15, 2014, 11:01 am

Such a lovely post! Relaxing after working hard is the BEST!

  • lauraleane April 15, 2014, 1:00 pm

a few years ago i set calendar alerts that popped up on my phone (gmail calendar) every hour. no matter what i was doing, i had to stop and chug at least 8 oz of water right then. i got so used to it, i can’t go more than a couple hours without at least a few gulps now.

  • Bonnie April 15, 2014, 2:13 pm

Is it water you are thirsty for?

  • Polly @ Tasty Food Project April 15, 2014, 6:46 pm

I always keep my water bottle near me and make it a habit to refill it throughout the day. I like to add a lemon wedge for extra flavor. It has helped me train my taste buds and kick my soda habit that I had many years ago!

  • Arielle @ healthypretty April 16, 2014, 12:52 am

I’m not a mom yet, but this happens to me ALL the time! Water is one of my favorite drinks, but it seems like I get so busy that I just forget to drink the amount I need. I always end up chugging a bunch of water before I sleep on days that I wasn’t as consistent as I want to be!

  • Laura April 16, 2014, 8:08 am

I like having “fun” water bottles to drink from. I notice that if I’m just drinking from a glass or a plastic bottle I don’t drink enough. But give me a camelbak or my newest bottle where I have to press a button to get water out and I drink at LEAST 3x as much!

I work as a meeting planner and barely have time to eat but I was noticing that my skin was so dry and I always looked tired. I have tried increasing my water intake and it has done wonders! I have an hour commute to work and I drink 16oz of ice cold lemon water on the way into work. I try to fill my bottle at least two more times in the morning, finishing the water by lunch. I have all afternoon/evening to get one to two more bottles of water in by the time I go to bed. I am seeing a real difference in my skin, but amazingly, I have a lot less joint pain. It also helps that I bought a really cute glass bottle with a lid that has a handle, it is so easy to take it with me to meetings, especially when my hands are already full of materials!

I have also started putting out flavored waters for all meetings, the favorites on our campus are cucumber water, lemon water and mango water.

  • Lauren @ Breathe & Nourish April 19, 2014, 4:08 pm

I do the exact same thing and I don’t even have a kid! I just recently had a two week challenge with myself on my blog to increase my intake. What really helped me was this great app I found and also lemon wedges. Read more here: http://breatheandnourish.com/habit-shifts-2/
