This Slush Was Made For Running

in All Posts

It snowed for almost two and a half days without pause.  We ended up with about ten inches.  Can you believe it?  That is highly unusual for this part of North Carolina.  I bet we won’t see another storm of this magnitude for many, many years.

We were snowed in but safe – and we definitely made the best of it.  I built not one, not two, but FOUR snowmen, and we had several enthusiastic snowball fights.  But we mostly just hunkered down, ate an excessive amount of chocolate, and drank wine until we ran out <—happened way too fast!

The sun came out today and kickstarted the melting process, which seems to be going very fast.  The streets are now slushy rivers – not okay for a jogging stroller, but definitely workable for two adults desperate to stretch their legs.  DadHTP came over this afternoon and watched Henry while the Husband and I went on a run.

I was excited to try out my new running shoes – Brooks Ghost 6.

I have owned several versions of the Ghost 5 and LOVED THEM.  I first tried the Ghosts for a blog review; I kept going back and buying new versions of the 5s with my own cash because it’s SUCH a great shoe.  The 5s were perfect for a neutral foot strike and were well-cushioned but lightweight and responsive.  Basically – my dream shoe.

I had a gift card for Zappos.com, and I was so disappointed when I searched the site and realized that I had to buy the upgraded 6s.  What if they didn’t fit?  What if they made my feet hurt?!  What if they changed too many things?!   Whew.  Runner problems, indeed.  So, obviously, I was a bit nervous the 6s wouldn’t live up to the 5s.  But they certainly did!  The 6s felt amazing – and I’ll continue to swear by the Ghosts.  If you’re interested in a very in-depth review of the 6s, check out the Running Shoes Guru blog.  I do agree that runners with a narrow foot may find the Ghosts troublesome; I have slightly wide feet and buy them in a regular width with no problems.

See my arm warmers?  While on our run today, I was thinking about how much I love my arm warmers and how they definitely deserve a blog shout-out.

I’ve had these arm warmers for about five years and, if I somehow misplaced these, I would go out to buy replacement ones in a heartbeat. They totally eliminate the whole “Do I wear a jacket or not?” issue for running in awkward 40 – 60 degree weather. Pair them with a short-sleeved shirt, and once you warm up and start to sweat, you can quickly peel them off or push them down.

I know nothing about these warmers except that they are Asics brand, so if you love your arm warmers, too, and have a great recommendation – please, share the link in the comments section!

PS – Happy Valentine’s Day!

I LOVE the Brooks Ghosts too! I’ve tried a few other kinds, and none of them compare to the Ghosts. My feet are pretty wide, so they’re perfect for me. Glad you were able to get out on a run!

I love running in arm warmers. My favorite weather to run in is when it is just cool enough to wear a tank top and arm warmers. I don’t know why but it always means it is the perfect temperature for running!

Those shoes look great–I can’t decide on a new pair of running shoes, there are so many awesome ones out there! I’ve never tried armbands, but they are such a clever idea.

I just got the same shoes last week! I love them. Shoe twins!!

I have those same arm earners, and another perk is, they are fairly cheap! I think I got mine at a local running store a couple years ago for $10 and they have served me well. Here in SoCal it is rarely cold enough for long sleeves!

How funny! I bought the same running shoes a few months ago and they are fantastic. I had the ghosts 5 as you do, and whenever I change running shoes I always worry!

I don’t own any REAL arm warmers but I made a version for my last ½ marathon in October. I knew it would be kind of chilly at the start but I also knew once I got going, I wouldn’t want to be in anything more than my tank top. Not really knowing anything about arm warmers or wanting to shell out the $ for them, I MADE some. I went to Target, bought a pair of super cheap knee-high socks, cut off the toes and they were AWESOME! They were a little high and did end up irritating one of my arm pits a bit but once I realized that, I pulled it down a bit and it was good. I ended up keeping them on for the whole race but they were fantastic!

Hey, Caitlin, I just wanted to let you knwo that there is a typo in your description: “when being chased MY zombies”. I would want to know so I’d thought I’d give you the heads up. 🙂

I didn’t even know arm warmers existed lol Seems like you really love them and they are worth looking into. I love anything Asics, their running shoes are my absolute favorite <3 PS- you look so great 🙂 And Henry is adorable in his snowsuit! love it!

Good to know about the Brooks Ghost. I need a neutral shoe with cushioning, but because I use custom orthotics (I only pronate on one foot), they need to be lightweight shoes as the orthotics add some bulk. I’ll definitely check these out to rotate with my current Saucony Ride 6 (also a great neutral, cushioned shoe). Plus I have a wide foot and only certain shoe companies accommodate that!

Great work for continuing your running even in the cold! Setting a great example for the little one (:

We got some snow this morning (2-4 inches? A good amount.), and we’re supposed to get some more on Monday maybe. I’m so sick of snow, but I doubt we’re done yet. /sigh
Glad you guys are making the best of it!

I have arm warmers from Oiselle and I LOVE them. This is actually my second pair because one of the first pair got lost! Highly recommend!

I run in Mizuno shoes now because Brooks stuff ran too wide, but I do love the look of the Ghost 🙂

I buy cheap leg warmers and use them as arm sleeves. Works great,

I have those same arm warmers and love them! Just wore them this morning at a 42* race. Perfect! Everyone around me wore jackets and ripped them off in the first couple miles. Such a pain 🙂

I have a pair of arm warmers by mizuno. They were given as a gift and I love them! The material is cotton, probably a little dry wicking but nothing really fancy. Proved to me that just having my arms covered with something really makes a difference!
