Day in the life

in All Posts

{Yesterday}

6:10 AM – I wake up on my own, roll over, and check my phone.  Ughhhhh.  Too early.  My alarm is scheduled to go off in 10 minutes but I silence my phone (WHY!? I wish I could make myself stop doing this, but it always feels like an excellent idea at the time). I stay in bed until…

6:40 AM – Okay. I seriously have to get up now. I stumble into the kitchen, make a strong cup of coffee, pour a huge glass of water, and sit at my computer.  I pray that Henry doesn’t wake up before I can finish my deadlines…

8:00 AM – By some miracle, Henry slept in!  While he was sleeping, I managed to write a blog post, do some work for Operation Beautiful, pay some bills, and get through half of my emails.

8:00 AM to 9:00 AM – We eat breakfast.  Henry must be going through a growth spurt because he keeps asking for “more, more, more!”  He eats MORE food than I do for breakfast!  Amazing.

9:00 AM – The Husband plays with Henry while I get dressed for the gym.  We leave around 9:15.  When we arrive, I open the door to find him quietly playing on his laptop.  He looked so serious!  I asked him if he was blogging.  Hah.

9:30 to 10:45 AM – I do this epic Arms and Abs Track Workout.  It is KILLER but in a good and manageable way.  I’m making a serious, concerted effort to just get over my hatred of strength training while we’re in the triathlon off season.  Coach Marni says that I won’t ever get faster unless I get stronger, so… I’m trying!

track workout

Speaking of track workouts, I made a board on Pinterest with a few of my favorite recent workouts.

11:00 AM – When we get back home, I am super excited to see our new oven has arrived!  Our old one was broken, so we upgraded to stainless steel.

photo 2

The Husband is frantically trying to get some projects done before we pass off childcare duties, so Henry hangs out with me while I shower and pack for an Operation Beautiful speaking event. When I come out of our bedroom at 11:45 AM, I am surprised by the arrival of the new microwave!

IMG_8236

Our kitchen is slooooowly being upgraded to this century.  We just put in new handles, too.  Man – handles are expensive.

IMG_8238

12:15 PM – I kiss everyone goodbye and jump in the car.  I have to drive 4.5 hours to Greenville, North Carolina for my presentation.  On the way over, I snack on many, many things, including these delicious coffee almonds.

photo 3

Everything tastes better with coffee.

While driving, I have three conference calls.  One is about the blog redesign.  Do you like it?!  We’re still adding some buttons and searching for ways to improve functionality.  There are always so many kinks to work out when new designs go live!  Bear with me if something is amiss (and please let me know if you notice any bugs).

2014-02-05_1225

The new HTP design is by Swoon Creative.  I love the chevron pattern.

5:00 PM – I arrive at my hotel.

IMG_8223

And I quickly change. I am VERY grateful that my shirt is long because the zipper on my favorite work pants is… GONE!  No idea what happened to it.  Glad I could cover it or I would’ve ended up presenting in yoga pants…

IMG_8227 IMG_8230

I scarf down a Subway salad.  It’s very lackluster.  I do a little bit more work before I leave.

5:45 PM – Arrive at East Carolina University.  I presented here about three years ago and am so happy to be back.  Can you believe that I’m nearing my ONE HUNDREDTH Operation Beautiful presentation!?  I cannot!  (You can learn more about my speaking events here).

IMG_8232

6:30 to 7:30 PM – I present!  I’d guess that 120 students showed up.  We ran out of chairs.  People were sitting on the floor!

photo 5

7:30 PM – I leave ECU and start looking for dinner.  I find a place called Mario’s Tacos.  The nice old lady behind the counter speaks almost no English, but I use my basic Spanish skills to order bean tacos.  I get the tacos to go, and she locks up the restaurant for the night as I leave.  I drive to my hotel and open the box to discover that the tacos (which look AMAZING) are covered in avocado, which I’m allergic to.  Bahhhhh.  I’m soooo hungry.  I get back into my car and aimlessly drive to a grocery store, where I walk around and decide that nothing looks good <— low blood sugar problems.  I go to Wendy’s and get a potato and a salad.  I mourn my tacos.  They smelled so good.  Mario’s Tacos – I will be back one day.

9:00 PM – I sit in my hotel bed and write a freelance article.  I have another conference call with my web designer regarding implementing the new design.  I screw around on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, and then I curse myself when I realize that I’m breaking ALL my sleep rules, and it’s seriously past my bedtime.

11:00 PM -  I go to sleep.  <3

Wow. What a busy day! Congratulations on your 100th speaking presentation. That is huge. You are doing such a great thing for girls everywhere!

I’m so sad for you, not being able to have avocado!

    • Caitlin February 5, 2014, 2:05 pm

Thank you 🙂 I hear that I am really missing out with avocado 🙂

  • katie February 5, 2014, 2:08 pm

I love “a day in the life” posts every now and then! That sweet lady probably thought you were the kind of girl who loves avocados and wanted to be nice! Bummer!

    • Caitlin February 5, 2014, 2:09 pm

I know… she was soooo nice. Probably kicked me a few extra slices, too!

  • Samantha February 5, 2014, 2:09 pm

I noticed the new blog design right away. It’s awesome!

    • Caitlin February 5, 2014, 2:10 pm

      Thank you!!

  • Eileen February 5, 2014, 2:17 pm

    Great post, very interesting day!

I find the chevrons very busy and distracting, keep seeing them out of the corners of my eyes. Maybe just me? I’d be curious what other people say. Sorry for the negative feedback, they just keep making me turn my head to look at the edges of the screen and hurting my eyes like they are moving.

    • Caitlin February 5, 2014, 2:18 pm

No, no. That’s totally okay! Don’t feel bad – I want honest opinions. Do you think if the chevron pattern was lighter, it wouldn’t be as distracting? I don’t want to hurt your eyes!!!

    • Ali February 5, 2014, 2:42 pm

I love chevron design too, but find it very distracting on the blog.

      • Caitlin February 5, 2014, 2:59 pm

We made it a lot lighter – is that better now?

      • jess February 5, 2014, 3:00 pm

i agree! sorry it say, it’s making me a bit dizzy, as i scroll down i feel like its moving…im very prone to motion sickness, maybe its me?! pretty though!

        • Caitlin February 5, 2014, 3:04 pm

Alright – we’re on it! Gonna try to keep it still. Stay, chevron, stay. 🙂

          • Caitlin February 5, 2014, 3:05 pm

Okay – it’s stuck in one position now. What do you think now?

      • Nicole February 5, 2014, 3:01 pm

I think lighter might work but I think what distracts me is that it’s moving when I scroll the page… if the bg design stayed still and the rest of the content scrolled, that might help! I love everything otherwise!

        • jess February 5, 2014, 3:10 pm

i think its getting better! i think lighter + staying put might help !

          • Caitlin February 5, 2014, 3:12 pm

            *yay!*

          • Sarah February 6, 2014, 3:37 pm

            still busy to me, idk.

  • Katie @ Pick Any Two February 5, 2014, 2:20 pm

Busy day! It sounds like you and your husband have a pretty good system for working at home/watching a toddler. My family is about to transition to a similar situation in the next few weeks. I’m expecting a few bumps in the road but hoping it ends up working out well!

    • Caitlin February 5, 2014, 2:21 pm

It works pretty well. Sometimes it’s nutty but it works out in the end.

  • Sarah February 5, 2014, 2:27 pm

Thanks for this, I love ‘day in the life’ posts! Maybe your salad was lackluster because you don’t include enough pepperoncinis/jalapenos/pickles. I love to load up my subway salad with those! And mustard! Is that weird?

    • Caitlin February 5, 2014, 2:29 pm

I had honey mustard but it wasn’t the same!

    • Ali February 5, 2014, 5:40 pm

I like their southwest sauce on the salads! 🙂

  • Colleen February 5, 2014, 2:33 pm

Love the new design! Love the fact that you were back at ECU. I worked a few block away from the campus when I lived in NC. Unfortunately, I never tried Mario’s Tacos until my last day — I know! What!?! Hope your drive back across NC is peaceful.

  • Janelle February 5, 2014, 2:49 pm

Fun post! And, I LOVE the redesign.

  • Michelle @ A Healthy Mrs February 5, 2014, 3:23 pm

I love the new design! So pretty! 🙂

  • Barbie February 5, 2014, 3:48 pm

Oh! I wish I knew u were here so I could hVe sent you somewhere great and I hate to say I have never even heard if Mario’s tacos and I have lives here for 20 years! I guess I’m missing out!

  • Erin B February 5, 2014, 3:49 pm

I like the new design but it’s too wide for my window. I didn’t even see the Chevron pattern until I read your post. For me to see the entire layout I have to open my firefox window about 12 inches. I work on a Mac too if that helps.

I’ve been enjoying your posts lately. Henry is getting so big!

  • Ashley @ Saving Money in your Twenties February 5, 2014, 3:57 pm

I LOVE THE NEW DESIGN! This looks so awesome! Chevron is amazing 🙂 I am so sad about your taco debacle, that is legitimately heartbreaking! I hate the feeling of being too hungry that nothing sounds good… that is the worst. Oh and I love these day in the life posts!!

  • Sara @ LovingOnTheRun February 5, 2014, 4:01 pm

I love love love the new blogging design! It is beautiful, sleek, and really clean looking! Great job! I know how hard it is when you are trying to get a new design to go live.

  • Katie @ Talk Less, Say More February 5, 2014, 4:53 pm

I think it’s so incredible that you’ve done so many Operation Beautiful presentations. Keep at it, such a great message!

  • Sagan February 5, 2014, 5:22 pm

So fun to see what a day in the life looks like! Congratulations on 100 presentations – making such a difference in the world!

Coffee almonds: I NEED to try those. And loving your web design.

  • Kristin February 5, 2014, 6:05 pm

Thank you SO much for these track workouts. I have hit the treadmill wall and the workouts you have posted have helped keep me motivated during this {horrible} Iowan winter! I welcome any future ones to keep me going!!

  • Abi@AbsofSteel February 5, 2014, 6:09 pm

what a hectic day, sounds like an amazing one too though. Love the new blog design by the way!

  • Anikka February 5, 2014, 6:55 pm

Wow, that seems like a busy day! Great job accomplishing all of that! How inspiring to see that you manage that rigurous of a schedule, while having a little one.

  • Jenn February 5, 2014, 6:58 pm

Love the handles! I have the same ones..great pick;)

What oven did you decide on? Mine is about to go CAPUT, but im too lazy to do the research.

    • Caitlin February 6, 2014, 7:01 am

It’s a Samsung that we selected basic purely on price and what the knobs look like 🙂

  • Elizabeth @ Positive Change February 5, 2014, 7:40 pm

    Loving the new design!
Congratulations on Operation Beautiful!! What an accomplishment!
I hope you have better luck with dinner tonight!

  • Briana February 5, 2014, 8:09 pm

LOVE the new design. Go purple!

  • sarah February 5, 2014, 8:53 pm

wow..I would kill to have a job like that! I love the freedom of your job…Im a marathon runner, and runner after 3 young kids, and a teacher. I get up at 4am to train, get the kiddos ready and then get to school where I usually don’t leave until 5, only to run after my own kiddos and get strength training in around 9pm in my garage. wake up and repeat! Make meals on the weekend for the whole week. All I can say is praise God for my training group that gets up at 4am with me! LOL! Great recap!

  • Cathy February 6, 2014, 12:38 am

    Love the new design!!!
So fun to see a day of your life. You get so much done!

  • Stephanie @ Whole Health Dork February 6, 2014, 7:01 am

Love the new blog design. Nice and modern and clean. Can’t believe you’re almost at 100 OB presentations! That’s fantastic! And seriously, what the heck happened to your zipper?!

  • Brittany (Healthy Slice of Life) February 6, 2014, 7:30 am

I was going to say our days sound so similar, you know, until the whole driving 4.5 hours thing 😉

Send those tacos my way- YUM!

  • Kim February 6, 2014, 10:21 am

I think it’s great that you took the time to do a blog redesign. Really like the new header–clean and classic. I know a lot of people are commenting on the chevron being distracting, but what has distracted me the most is the amount of ads! I feel like they are everywhere I look and take away from the aesthetics of the blog. But I know you have to bring in the $$ somehow!

  • Kelsey @ Ramblings of Change February 6, 2014, 10:23 am

I’m in love with the day in the life…so fun to see how we all spend our days. And the blog redesign?! I’m in love with it!

  • Kelly February 6, 2014, 1:16 pm

Hmmm – I have to be totally honest that I don’t love the new layout!! I am NOT trying to be picky or negative – but since you asked for feedback, I’ll provide some as a long-time reader. Your previous lay out really seemed so much more professional, organized, bright, bold, and youthful. This one seems plain and slightly amateur. I can’t quite pinpoint why. BUT thanks for sharing your day! 😉

    • Caitlin February 6, 2014, 1:22 pm

Do you miss the photos at the top? Trying to pinpoint it!

Thanks for reading for so long!

      • Laura February 6, 2014, 4:08 pm

I agree with Kelly’s comment and yes, miss the pictures. Also, miss the baby tab! Maybe it’s a little outdated but I read through your week by week posts on your pregnancy religiously when I was pregnant (mine is 10 months old now). Loved them! No idea how to link back to that stuff with the new layout.
Also, I agree the ads are much more visible and distracting now. I honestly never noticed them before but now it seems like they are everywhere. Maybe I’m just not used to ignoring them yet? Love your blog and will continue to follow it either way.

        • Caitlin February 6, 2014, 4:12 pm

HI there! I’m going to have a tab linking to the pregnancy posts under my photo. I am just waiting on my web designer for something and then it will be easily clickable 🙂 Thanks for reading my old baby posts, it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

      • Kelly February 8, 2014, 11:36 am

Hmm — you know, it might just be the lack of pictures, now that you mention that!! I do love the chevron!

  • Meghan February 6, 2014, 3:24 pm

I love the new color scheme and the header for the blog, and the chevron looks really nice now that it’s a bit lighter – but the ads on the side are SO distracting! I have an ad blocker on my work computer so instead of 1/3 of the screen being taken up by ads, it’s just empty. It’s also difficult to read the blog on a smartphone now.

    • Caitlin February 6, 2014, 3:26 pm

The ads have always been there – I didn’t add any when I redesigned the blog, so perhaps you’re just noticing them more now because you are looking at the layout. So sorry that they are distracting!

Can you send me a screenshot of what it looks like on your phone? caitlinjboyle@gmail.com

  • Dana B February 6, 2014, 5:40 pm

I read your blog daily and I’m note sure that I love the new design. I fond the chevron a bit distracting and I don’t love the new serif font. I think it’s hard to read.

  • Floey February 7, 2014, 5:46 pm

Whenever I’m out of town I always feel like I need to cap the night off with some kind of dessert 😛

  • kayla February 7, 2014, 9:50 pm

Hi Caitlin.. where do you suggest finding freelance writing opportunities for someone interested in writing?

    • Caitlin February 9, 2014, 12:38 pm

Hi there! Sorry I took a while to approve this comment, I wanted to be able to respond at the computer. The short version of my answer is that I don’t really have advice on this, unfortunately. I’ve been freelancing writing for 12 years now and every job that I’ve every gotten has been through word-of-mouth. I rarely approach editors on my own. I wish I had some suggestions, but I don’t. So sorry!

  • Jenn@Mark My Miles! February 9, 2014, 3:57 am

I LOVE these day in the life posts. I also love that you are reaching your hundredth speaking event! Do you have any planned for National Eating Disorder Week???

    • Caitlin February 9, 2014, 12:35 pm

Yes! I am doing one at Davidson College, another at UNC Pembroke, and one at the University of Nevada in Reno.

  • Susie (The Esthetic Goddess) February 20, 2014, 5:53 pm

Wow! You had an action packed day and I agree about how expensive handles are!
