BabyHTP: 18 Months

in BabyHTP

It’s time for a Henry update!

IMG_0522

This Thursday is Henry’s 18 month birthday. A year and a half. Can you believe it? I can’t.  He’ll always be BabyHTP to me, though. Smile

Henry is such a joy. We love him SO much. I wish I could convey his personality accurately, but it’s so hard to put my fun little toddler into words. He’s friendly and outgoing, physical and crazy, and so talkative. And he’s SO loving – lots of hugs and kisses for everyone, including Maggie and James.

Henry facts:

Rapidly approaching 25 pounds – but still wants to be carried all the time. My arms are sore a lot. Smile

He has a vocabulary of well over 100 words and regularly says 3 or 4 word sentences.  I’m losing track of all the words he knows.  Every day, he surprises me with a new phrase.  The other day he told a little girl on the playground to “be careful!”

Henry’s began to identify objects as belonging to certain people – Mommy’s shoes, Daddy’s cereal.  He loves to tell the dogs, “No bark!”

photo 1 (22)

He adores dancing and will demand that I join in, too – “Mommy DANCE!”

We have full-on conversations.

There’s a few words that I can’t figure out what he means by them… For example, “Tico.”  No idea what he means when he says tico.  But he says it a lot!  It must be important!

He can do a somersault. It’s too cute. Sometimes he has trouble getting all the way over!

He sleeps from 7:30 – 7 AM every night and naps from 12 – 2 or 3. It is blissful. I NEVER thought that Henry would be a good sleeper when we first started to sleep train him.

We are going through a bit of separation anxiety. Henry does not like it when I leave rooms or disappear overnight for work trips.

Food loves: Larabars, strawberries, blueberries, potatoes, and peanut butter. YUM.

He has begun to draw and color but prefers me to draw pictures for him (usually of “bebe ellefants” <—little elephants).

Henry adores going to childcare at the gym. So far, we have no plans to put him in ‘preschool’ anytime soon… but maybe next year? I think he’d love it.

photo 3 (17)

To help him ‘transition’ from one activity to the next, I have always said, “Say bye bye to the bath” or “Say bye bye to the slide.”  After doing this for his entire life, I think Henry now believes that he should always say bye bye to everything… He says bye bye food, bye bye bed, bye bye music. Cracks me up.

Like all toddlers, he throws tantrums over the silliest things.  The other day, he got extremely upset because his peanut butter sandwich came apart. He kept yelling, “I BROKE! I BROKE! MOMMY FIX! MOMMY FIX!” When I stuck the two pieces of bread back together, he thought I was a genius.

His favorite books are: Brown Bear and Sammy the Seal.  He loves pushing around monster trucks and taking baths.

He has not attempted to climb out of his crib… yet… I know he could do it if he sincerely tried.  I hope he NEVER tries!

He loves to help me clean – he wipes down the floors when I mop and pretends to vacuum when I do.

He has thick, beautiful hair – I’m so jealous of his hair!  He has two crowns (basically, two circular swirls on the top of his head where his hair parts). I have read lots of Old Wives Tales about it… that he’ll be a world traveler, that he’s a super genius, that we’ll have TWINS next!  I’m pretty sure the only thing it means for sure is that he’ll use a lot of hair product as a teenager.

He has 7 teeth that have fully popped out of the gums and about 5 more on their way.  So many chompers!

Thank you for indulging me as I have a mom moment. Smile It’s been so fun to share my motherhood journey and talk about my little guy on the blog.  He is truly the light of my life, and Kristien and I adore him so much.  <3

Such a cutie!! This precious time just flies by! My sweet girl will be two Sunday, and every time we talk about her birthday I kinda pretend cry and say, “How are you already two??” And she says, “Mama’s upset. It’s okay Mama” and pats me. Haha. I have to reassure her I’m not actually sad.
Thanks for sharing! You will be so happy to have these amazing moments and milestones recorded here as Henry gets bigger and bigger. 🙂

    • Caitlin December 9, 2013, 2:38 pm

      hahah thats adorable.

  • Erica December 9, 2013, 2:43 pm

Hes so darn cute! Glad hes doing well. It is amazing how much/fast they learn. Kaylin is 2 1/2 now and still hasn’t tried to climb out of the crib (if she is in there…shes passed out)….I keep thinking we need to transition to a big kid bed but….think I’ll hold off a bit longer 😉

  • Erin @ The Grass Skirt December 9, 2013, 3:12 pm

It really is so hard to believe that Henry is already 18 months old. I remember holding him when he was practically a newborn! He really is a sweetie pie. 🙂

  • Whitney @ Pancakes and Tulips December 9, 2013, 3:23 pm

So cute! Have you seen reasonsmysoniscrying.com? I instantly thought of it when you said he got upset over his peanut-butter sandwich “breaking.” 🙂

    • Caitlin December 9, 2013, 3:35 pm

      Yes best site ever.

Oh, he is just so darn cute!! I love Henry updates! My son was an early talker too. I loved it for so many reasons… I think the best part of having a talker is their ability to communicate with you which can lead to less meltdowns. They still exist of course, but for a little guy to be able to tell you what is on his mind is so nice for all parties involved. 😉

Your pride and love for Henry is palpable. Thank you for sharing with us!

  • mindy @ just a one girl revolution. December 9, 2013, 3:36 pm

    God, he’s precious.

  • Sara @ LovingOnTheRun December 9, 2013, 3:42 pm

I can’t believe he is already a year and a half! I feel like we were all just following you as a pregnant lady! He is so adorable 🙂

  • Joy December 9, 2013, 4:13 pm

He’s a gorgeous little boy and your love for him shines through in your writing and photos. He’s lucky to have you as a mom.

  • Sarah December 9, 2013, 4:17 pm

I don’t know if this helps, but my daughter is about your son’s age, and when she says “tico”, she means “thank you.” So polite 😉

  • Aishah @ Coffee, Love, Health December 9, 2013, 4:18 pm

Caitlin I love your Henry posts because I can tell how much you love him so much and how great of a Mother you are. Whenever I mention your blog I tell people I’ve been reading since you were a fiance planning your wedding and now you’re an amazing Mommy! I don’t know why it makes me feel proud LOL I can’t wait to be a mom one day, you make it look like such a joy 🙂

  • Chrissy December 9, 2013, 4:26 pm

Oh, I bet he’d love preschool! Did you know that you have to sign up in Jan/Feb if you want him to start next fall? It’s crazy, I had no idea until one of my friends told me last year (in Jan.). We are at the Open Door School in Cotswold, love it!

  • Olivia December 9, 2013, 4:33 pm

Could “tico” mean “tickle”? I have a 19 month old –I know this game well! And we say “bye bye” to everything too! 🙂

  • Jennifer December 9, 2013, 4:58 pm

I’m thinking that with Henry having such a large vocabulary, he’s probably had little exposure to television thus far. Would you ever consider writing a post about how you’ve encouraged such wonderful speech development? I have an 18 month old, and he’s nowhere near 100 words….not even close.

    • Caitlin December 9, 2013, 6:05 pm

I don’t think we can take all the credit! I think Henry is just really verbal. But we do talk a LOT. I’ve read a lot of studies about how children who hear more words say more words and end up performing better in school. Every article concludes with a paragraph about how you should just narrate everything you do so that’s what I’ve done since day one. Seriously I never shut up 🙂

Also just so you know, Henry watches an episode of Sesame Street every day! I gotta work 🙂

      • Caitlin December 9, 2013, 6:05 pm

Oh and we read every day. We probably read for 30 minutes total over the course of 2-3 sessions.

  • Eli's Mom December 9, 2013, 5:16 pm

Coming from someone with a 17-month old, I am guessing ‘tico’ is tickle. I wish you live closer so that my LO and yours can be friends. 🙂

    • Adrienne December 9, 2013, 10:01 pm

Yes! Tico in out house is either ‘tickle’ or ‘Twinkle’, as in Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.

  • Ashley December 9, 2013, 6:19 pm

Awww, love this post! Henry is adorable! I can’t believe his vocabulary is so large – must be a genius, for sure! : )
On an unrelated note, I have a reader’s request!!! Can you do a Q & A post sometime addressing some various aspects of life? Like, where do the pups sleep nowadays? Still in the homemade cozy-cave thing? Or back in your bed? In Henry’s room? etc??
And, whatever happened to your twin-mom neighbor (the runner)? Have you guys run together anymore? Is she ever going to do a guest post? I’m a twin mom, so I was super curious about how she did it – when you last mentioned her I think her kiddos were like 9 months?? I was barely functional at that point, much less running 9 minute/miles with both babies in the jogging stroller!
And whatever happened with your bro in law? I know he was living with you….and now he’s not? Is he still in the area or did he move? Are you guys still working on that fiction book together??

I’m sure I had more questions I can’t think of now. Just thought it might be a fun change of pace to do a Reader Q & A and address some of the random aspects of your life that you haven’t mentioned recently. : )

    • Caitlin December 9, 2013, 7:27 pm

Sure!!! Maybe I’ll try to do it later this week. 🙂

      • Caitlin December 9, 2013, 7:30 pm

Let me know if you think of any Qs (or if anyone else does). It’s always so hard to think of these things!

        • Charitydawn December 9, 2013, 11:54 pm

I was thinking hte same thing today. Like what is your favorite xmas treat etc.. Maybe put a twitter call out for ppl to ask you questions! 😀

        • Carina December 10, 2013, 11:07 am

Q: Are you going to make Henry be a vegetarian? We don’t have kids but I’m not sure how I’d feel if my kid were at a party and wanted to eat chicken nuggets or something that other kids were eating.

          • Caitlin December 10, 2013, 1:41 pm

You could always do veggie at home and if he wants to try meat when out, let him have it.

    • kathy v December 9, 2013, 9:43 pm

Yeah! A Q&A post would be fun.

  • Amber K December 9, 2013, 7:21 pm

He is absolutely precious. Time really does fly!

  • Leah December 9, 2013, 7:31 pm

I love your henry posts! He is adorable! I’m 23 weeks pregnant with our first – also a boy and getting nervous about becoming a mom and being responsible for this little person 24/7. But reading your posts is encouraging. Thank you for sharing.

    • Caitlin December 9, 2013, 7:32 pm

It’s so fun! You will love it 🙂 congrats

  • Michelle December 9, 2013, 8:24 pm

He’s soooo adorable, thank you for continuing to share with us! Do you think he might be trying to say “thank you” when he says “tico”? On another note, Tico the Squirrel is a friend of Dora the Explorer…not sure if he’s been exposed to the books/show anywhere!

  • Marie December 9, 2013, 8:32 pm

Is it possible that “tico” is “there you go”? Like when he’s handing you something? When I was a baby I said something that sounded like “deygo” a lot when giving something to someone, because people had said “there you go!” to me so often. Just a thought…

  • Stacy December 9, 2013, 9:25 pm

Is it easier to be a mom of a toddler rather than the mom of a newborn?

    • Caitlin December 10, 2013, 7:12 am

      Yes!!!!

    • Claire Zulkey December 10, 2013, 5:19 pm

Completely, and way more fun too. My husband and I were just saying our 15 mo is way more entertaining than when he was just a grub. Angelina Jolie was right–they are kind of just blobs when they’re newborns.

  • Kathy December 9, 2013, 9:35 pm

The somersault attempt is hilarious…such concentration! My little niece was super verbal at that age as well and I do think it has a lot to do with how much you engage them…her parents did the same thing you do, just a running monologue which turns into a dialogue before you know it. But I think it’s always tricky to compare kids as well…some just don’t seem to have any words for so long and then they unleash them all at once!

  • Melissa December 9, 2013, 9:50 pm

Henry is such a cutie! I loved this post and how it provided us with a snapshot!

  • Adrienne December 9, 2013, 9:59 pm

OMG Caitlin, I think my son is Henry’s long-lost Australian twin. Isaac is two months older, but their personalities and quirks sound so similar. Right down to the ‘bye bye’ to EVERYTHING (food, toilet, TV, toys) and the double crown with thick thick hair. This age really is joyful isn’t it (though the tantrums are testing!).

  • Michelle @ A Healthy Mrs December 9, 2013, 10:37 pm

What a cutie! Happy 18 months to Henry 🙂

  • Diana Griffith December 9, 2013, 11:46 pm

It is so crazy how kids develop so differently when they are this young. My nephew just turned 2 and he is just now putting two word phrases together sometimes. he is a very social little kid, but his verbal skills are coming slowly.

Henry is so adorable. I love theae milestone posts.

  • Lauren @ sassy molassy December 10, 2013, 1:36 am

Is tico thank you? That’s the first thing that came to mind when I read it.

  • Emma December 10, 2013, 3:04 am

Could tico be “think so”? Does he say it in reply to questions?

    Such a cutie!!

  • Sarahf December 10, 2013, 3:36 am

I love your Henry updates, I’ve been a reader since before you were pregnant, so I love finding out how the little guy is doing (OK, not so little now…). What a cutie he’s turning into!

  • Emily December 10, 2013, 5:20 am

He is so precious <3 the Henry posts are my favourite, a tie with Maggie and James. Thank you for sharing his journey with us!!

  • Karen December 10, 2013, 7:12 am

Does he watch dora the explorer? Tico is a character from Dora.

  • Alex @ Kenzie Life December 10, 2013, 8:44 am

Oh my gosh he is so grown up and SO CUTE!!! And all the little stories are just so precious. He seems to have such a distinct but sweet and fun personality! I love that he tells the dogs, “No bark”…I think that’s so adorable! I hope that you all have your best holiday season yet!

  • Amy Q December 10, 2013, 9:03 am

He’s a doll. You may wish to consider that toddler bed…..it’s surprising how they really do stay in it….As my pediatrician said to me way back when I had toddlers, if you already think he can do it, you will beat yourself up if he tries it and breaks an arm……maybe Santa could bring a new bed 🙂

  • Katie December 10, 2013, 9:29 am

Thank you for a Henry update! I also have an 18 month-old and this age is so much fun. Every time we turn on the Christmas tree lights it’s like she’s seeing them for the first time – so awesome. Enjoy your holiday with your sweet little guy!

  • Colleen December 10, 2013, 9:48 am

the toddler stage is so adorable and fun! they really get to express themselves and their reaction to things is amazing.

  • Sara December 10, 2013, 10:37 am

Oh my goodness, 18 months already! I feel like I was just following along through your pregnancy…actually, I kinda was because I re-read all your posts when I was preggo. 🙂 He’s so cute. My little guy has two swirls on his head too! I’ll need to look up those old wives tales…

  • Amy December 10, 2013, 10:39 am

He is adorable! Congrats on raising such a wonderful little boy. 🙂

  • Reenie December 10, 2013, 10:43 am

    Absolutely adorable. 🙂

    Love the “no bark” HA!!

  • Rebecca December 10, 2013, 10:55 am

    Aw, I’m loving Henry updates!

I’m babysitting two little boys this weekend, and I think one of them might be about Henry’s age, maybe a little older. I haven’t ever babysat them before, and don’t spend a whole lot of time with them anyway (just to see them at church), so I’m hoping they’re not super shy with me! I’m hoping they don’t have too much problem with being left with me for a few hours, and that they go to bed like normal, etc. We’ll see!

  • Ali December 10, 2013, 12:48 pm

I’m thinking about sleep training my 9 month old. He was up 4 times in the middle of the night between 7pm-6:30am. I’m really tired and just need more sleep now. He’s gone through phases where he’ll only wake up 1-2 times though, so that’s what is stumping me. He can do and has done it – why won’t he do it every night? Teething, wonder weeks, learning to walk? Do you have any opinions??

    • Caitlin December 10, 2013, 1:40 pm

I would totally sleep train him NOW because it will only get worse as he gets older – just my opinion. The link in the post explains how I did it.

  • Becky December 10, 2013, 1:30 pm

    Hi there,

You should look into baby wearing. I have twins and there is no reason for your arms to be sore =) You can search facebook for a local group in your area. They should have wraps, carriers, etc. that you can try before you buy. There are also baby wearing budget groups on FB where you can purchase for less than $100.

  • Janelle December 10, 2013, 5:42 pm

So, so adorable. Loved reading this post! I just can’t believe that cheese didn’t make the food love list. Haha.

    • Caitlin December 10, 2013, 5:53 pm

He’s over cheese now. So hard to keep up!

  • Maria December 10, 2013, 9:36 pm

My daughter who is almost one (tomorrow is the big day!) has the double crown thing too! I never knew there was a name for it- my husband’s sister always just says that she has a “double swirly”. She has tons and tons of hair, and the swirls can make it a little hard to style- so often she wakes up with a little alfafa thing going on!

  • Danielle @ Green is the New Black December 11, 2013, 5:49 am

So adorable! My son is a bit older and does the exact same thing with “bye bye” to EVERYTHING! We used it for the same reason, and it helps to get him to understand that we’re leaving things, but now that he’s older he’s the kid who talks to all the inanimate objects! I still find it cute though!

  • Sara December 11, 2013, 8:34 am

I can’t believe my son will be 7 months in 4 days. Where does the time go? Everyone tells you when you’re pregnant “enjoy it! It goes so fast!” They’re not kidding! But it’s probably not something you can fully understand until you’re a parent (that and how much you can love your little guy or gal. It’s insane!)

  • Caitlin December 11, 2013, 2:54 pm

This post was a joy to read! I love reading about all of his little quirks like saying bye to everything and being so distressed about his sandwich falling apart. Believe me Henry I have been there 😉

  • Heather December 11, 2013, 4:08 pm

    He’s just so cute!

  • janna December 11, 2013, 5:19 pm

    Maybe “tico” is “tickle?”

  • Kath December 15, 2013, 2:04 pm

    I heart Henry!
