Goodbye, Pippa

in All Posts

It is with a heavy heart that I say that Pippa passed away this morning.

Everything seemed fine. She wasn’t sick or lethargic. When I woke up, she greeted me outside my bedroom door as normal. She said hello to the dogs and ran upstairs with us to get Henry out of his crib.  She walked around him as I changed his diaper, meowing back at Henry as he said, “Cat! Cat! Cat!” Same as everyday.  Nothing amiss.  Henry and I sat in a chair to read a book, and she wandered out into the hallway.  Then, suddenly, I heard a big thump, and I looked up to see Pippa throw herself down on the floor.  I knew right away she was dead.

I began to perform cat CPR immediately, but she never started to breathe again. Regardless, I did CPR in the car all the way to the vet, who told us that Pippa likely suffered a massive cardiac event.  She never knew what hit her.

She was just two years old.  Although we’ve only had her for a year, she was so part of our family.  We loved Pippa so much.  She was best friends with Henry; the dogs had grown to not only accept but adore her.  Just last night, she was relaxing on my chest, and I commented to Kristien, “She is just such a great cat. I feel so lucky to have her.”

One minute she was here.  The next she was gone.

I will always remember her loud purr, her soft and silver fur, the way she waited for me to open the bedroom door every morning, the way she cuddled us at night. I am thankful that we rescued her and gave her a warm, loving home. I am thankful that we were her owners.  She really liked being part of our family.  I thought we would have her until Henry was a teenager – it is so terribly sad that she is gone.  I feel shocked by what happened, by how quickly it unfolded right in front of me.  But I’m glad she wasn’t alone.  Most of all, I am thankful that she didn’t suffer and went quickly.

Oh no! Sweet Pippa! I am in tears reading this. It brings back recent memories of us losing our sweet cat this summer. So glad she didn’t suffer. Hugs to you and your family. Losing a fur-child is terrible.

  • Julie @ Peanut Butter Fingers November 12, 2013, 11:19 am

Caitlin, my heart is breaking for you and your family. Pippa was such a beautiful cat and so very clearly loved and adored by you, your husband, Henry, Maggie and James… and your readers. <3 I loved looking at all of the pictures you posted of her because her personality radiated from every single one. Her relationship with Maggie and the pictures of the two of them together made me smile and laugh. I'm so glad she had such a wonderful year with your family but I am so sorry her life was so short. I'm crying for you and your family and sending lots of love and hugs your way. <3 Pippa <3

So sorry for your loss. Did you use essential oil in the swiffer pads? I noticed a reader completed yesterday and said that essential oils are toxic to cats. Could Pippa have perhaps licked the floor??

    • Caitlin November 12, 2013, 11:23 am

No I didn’t. Thankfully!! I would hate to be questioning if it was something I unwittingly did. 🙁 the vet said such cardiac events do happen a lot in young cats… I looked online when I got home and there’s so many stories just like mine. Cat is fine, and then suddenly BAM.

    • Laine November 12, 2013, 12:06 pm

I’m pretty sure that wouldn’t cause a cat to just drop dead. Mostly likely they would show signs of sickness first, if at all, from just a few drops spread out over an entire house

That is so sad about Pippa! What a horrible shock. She was so cute.

  • Alexa November 12, 2013, 11:22 am

This makes me so sad. I’m sorry for your loss. 🙁

    • Caitlin November 12, 2013, 11:33 am

We’re lucky he’s so young. He was right there as I did CPR but he didn’t even seem to notice… Now it’s like nothing happened. I’m glad he won’t remember it.

      • emily November 12, 2013, 12:16 pm

Well that part is good! I lost a lottttttt of pets growing up (we lived on an island with a huge problem with spaying/neuturing compliance and most of our rescues had dicey pasts) and I know it really sucks.

      • MomHTP November 12, 2013, 12:21 pm

How loving and thoughtful that you gave Pippa CPR!

My heart goes out to you, Kristien and Henry – Pippa was special.

    Thinking Back on My Life
By, The One They Called Pippa

I came from the streets where I had the huge responsibility of caring for my kittens while living under a house. I knew I must be strong, tuff, and a resourceful provider as there was little food and much danger in my world then.

I felt confused when humans came and took me and my family into the their world. I must say I was afraid during those first days, but it was only a short time before I joined the Authorities who called themselves the Boyle family.

They called me Pippa; so I accepted the call, and learned about their inside world. I felt safe in their house because they allowed me to sit high on tables and on clean, soft things. In those higher positions I could watch what was happening around me and gain understanding of this new place. They were a complex family mix of different size humans and fur children. Because of their kindness it was ease to make the transition and learn about each member’s unique personality.

The little human kitten often wanted to play with me. I enjoyed short games with him- although I learned when to run for cover. The big fur child was slow to know and seemed very shy for a long while. His short-legged, long eared companion paid me little notice because she was more interested in the small human’s beddings and the Authorities’ attention than in getting to know me. The little insecure short-legged member seemed to struggle with the new human kitten’s important role and his special beds. She didn’t seem to like it when the Authorities moved her out and placed the squirmy little kitten they called Henry in “her” new bed!

It took awhile but Long Ears finally accepted me to the point of allowing me into a few games with her like running up the stairs, which I could easily win, or just walking outside together when the Authorities allowed us out. She even decided to allow me to join her for nap times. Even the Shy One came around and we became one big family.

My favorite time though was spent with the Authorities. They seemed to enjoy stroking my back and head while in bed or on the sofa; so I decided to share my warmth while singing my purr songs in thanks. I so appreciated all they did for me like always taking care to put my food where the other fur members couldn’t reach it. I must mention here that their eating styles were a bit shocking to me because they “inhaled” all food given to them within a minute! Actually, if I think hard about it – the only annoying behaviors from the Authorities were the insistence that I use a small sandbox for toilet needs and that they regulated outdoor adventure time – what a small price to pay for the safety, fun, and love I received with my amazing Boyle family.

I grew to love each and everyone and can barely recall my homeless, single mom struggles during my time on the street. It is true for me that…“Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.” I’m sure hope my family knows how happy I was living in their breathtaking, love-filled world. Signed with Gratitude on 11-12-13

      I love you mom.

  • Ali November 12, 2013, 12:13 pm

Oh, I’m so, so sorry! This really got me as I’m going through a long illness with my rescued cat right now. It’s been just me and her for 7.5 years and I don’t know what I’m going to do if she goes – what happened to Pippa is my greatest fear right now. I have lost a lot of pets in the past and I completely understand how hard it is, especially when it is sudden. Pets are members of the family. Nothing can replace the loss or really even make it better right now but I know your home is filled with love and family and Pippa had a great family and was well loved while you had her – which is what matters the most. <3

    • Caitlin November 12, 2013, 12:16 pm

I’m sorry to hear about your cat… I hope she pulls through.

  • Rachel November 12, 2013, 12:15 pm

I wanted to add to your list of condolences and tell you how sorry I am for your loss. She was an incredibly special cat. I loved the photo last week of her in the kennel with her canine companion, silly kitten.

She was lucky to have a family such as yours; may your memories provide you comfort in these sad days ahead.

  • FitBritt@MyOwnBalance November 12, 2013, 12:17 pm

Oh I am so sad for you! I know Pippa meant a lot to you from the way you talked about her here on your blog. I am so very sorry this happened. It is very difficult to lose a pet. I am glad that she did not suffer and you got to spend the time you did with her. Also, your mother is a very sweet woman.

  • Mandy_Ellen November 12, 2013, 12:19 pm

Oh Caitlin … this made me bawl my eyes out! I literally have a little zoo family at my house (a dog, four cats, two horses), and it’s always SO ROUGH to lose a four legged family member, especially when it’s so unexpected. My deepest condolences to you and your family (two legged and four legged!). Pippa was such a beautiful, special kitty, and I’m sure that she will be fondly remembered in a special place in all of your hearts!

  • Amanda H November 12, 2013, 1:06 pm

This breaks my heart so bad! My animals are my children right now. I don’t know if I could have handled the situation as well as you did. I’m glad Henry is young enough that it won’t affect him. I know though the house is full it will still feel empty. Sending well wishes and warm thoughts your way!

  • Nikki November 12, 2013, 1:08 pm

    My heart breaks for you.

  • Michelle @ A Healthy Mrs November 12, 2013, 1:10 pm

Oh Caitlin, I’m so sorry for your family’s loss — my heart breaks for you! Pippa was lucky to have such a loving family.

Thinking of you all during this tough time.

  • Amy G November 12, 2013, 1:14 pm

That is so sad. I’m a cat person and I’ve never heard of such a thing. I agree that Pippa lived a great life with you and your family. Hopefully you can open your heart for another cat sometime in your future. Love the story your mom wrote!

  • Katya November 12, 2013, 1:17 pm

That is so sad! Goodbye pippa. Your family loved you very much xo

  • Leah November 12, 2013, 1:19 pm

🙁 Thinking about your family. So sad to hear about this loss. We all loved Pippa too!

    • Caitlin November 12, 2013, 1:20 pm

i know you guys did, thank you so much.

  • Liza November 12, 2013, 1:24 pm

I’m so sorry for your loss. She was a beautiful cat and truly loved by you and your family.

I saw a man almost die this weekend at a restaurant and it really shook me. He was with his children (who were in their 30s) and all of a sudden they laid him out on the floor and started screaming for a doctor. It was a crowded brunch spot in NYC so luckily about 8 doctors (my sister in law included) stood up and started helping. They performed CPR on him and got him breathing again. It was so scary. He was rushed to the hospital. I think the most heartbreaking thing of all was watching his grown children just sob and sob standing over him, holding onto each other. That is a something I will never forget.

Losing people, pets, even strangers has such an impact on us.

    • Caitlin November 12, 2013, 1:26 pm

Ugh that is so sad. I’m sorry you witnessed that. This whole thing makes me want to brush up on CPR STAT.

  • Lauren November 12, 2013, 1:27 pm

We had a similar situation with our first cat as a married couple in that we only had her for a short time but felt comfort in knowing we adored her and gave her more attention than she’d ever had and she spent her happiest year and a half with us. Know that you gave Pippa that experience!

  • Jaime November 12, 2013, 1:39 pm

Oh, no! I am so sorry!

  • Anne Weber-Falk November 12, 2013, 1:44 pm

Oh my goodness. Poor kitty. I am so sorry for all of you. We love our beautiful animals as family members. I am glad that you had each other even for such a short time. There is a wonderful book by Cynthia Rylant called Cat Heaven. She has another called Dog Heaven. It is a wonderful and beautiful story about losing our dear animal friends and what their lives in Heaven are like. The books will make you smile and cry and they will also make you all feel better.

  • Sarah November 12, 2013, 1:51 pm

I am so sorry, Caitlin. She was lucky to have you all for her short stay here on Earth.

  • Aerevyn November 12, 2013, 1:51 pm

It was so nice seeing Pippa change from a scared kitty to loving and friendly. She was well-loved and will be missed.

  • Judy E. November 12, 2013, 1:52 pm

So very sorry, Caitlin. I’m glad that you and she had a nice regular morning before this happened. I know she will be greatly missed by everyone, including the dogs – especially Maggie.

  • Lee November 12, 2013, 1:54 pm

Oh no, so sorry to hear this.

  • Sonia the Mexigarian November 12, 2013, 1:58 pm

I am so sorry for your loss. My heart is breaking for you. We have lost many many loved fur babies in our family, young and old and it never gets easier, no matter how they go. You gave her love and a good home for the year you had her and she gave you love right back. That is the greatest gift souls can do for one another.

My abuelita came from the old world of Mexico and she used to say that if something was threatening a beloved human member of the family, a pet would willingly give themselves up so the person may be well. And in spirit they would continue to protect the family, because of their fierce devotion and love. I know it may not help much in saying that (I used to find it strange, but comforting in a way) but I know your family has an extra guardian angel.

Much love to you and your familia.

    • Caitlin November 12, 2013, 2:10 pm

      Thank you <3

  • Sara November 12, 2013, 1:59 pm

How awful! Oh, I’m so sorry to hear about Pippa. Hugs!

  • Marie November 12, 2013, 1:59 pm

I am so, so very sorry for your loss! I pray that you will all have peace and comfort in the days, months, years to come.

  • erica November 12, 2013, 2:00 pm

OMG! i’m so sorry for your loss 🙁
losing a pet is never easy…pippa was a beautiful cat!

  • Beks November 12, 2013, 2:01 pm

Poor sweet Pippa! I’m so sorry for your family, Caitlyn. I lost a kitty in a similar way in college, though she was much older. It’s never easy, though. I’m sure she loved you all as much as you loved her. And you’ve taken so many wonderful pictures to remember her by.

  • Jess November 12, 2013, 2:04 pm

This is so heartbreaking 🙁 At least Pippa had a love-filled year of life instead of meeting her fate at the shelter… you gave her that! She will be missed!

  • Alex @ Kenzie Life November 12, 2013, 2:04 pm

Oh my gosh, Caitlin I’m so sorry! I don’t even know what to say because condolences don’t seem like enough. That’s really tragic. I am very sorry for your loss. She had such a good home and I’m sure she was so grateful to be with such a loving family and other pet siblings. <3

  • Katie November 12, 2013, 2:05 pm

I’m so sorry to hear about your kitty 🙁 Our cat got very sick a year ago and was diagnosed with leukemia and my husband and I were beyond devastated. Thankfully he pulled through but he’s on medication for the rest of his life and I can’t even imagine losing him. I’m curious how you knew to do CPR on a cat? I would never think to do that to my cat if something like this happened – good for you! You are such a good mommy to Henry and your pets 🙂

    • Caitlin November 12, 2013, 2:10 pm

I didn’t – I just did what I knew of CPR for babies. I just worked on a post that includes a video about pet CPR, i’ll post it later.

      • Caitlin November 12, 2013, 2:10 pm

Oh and I am so sorry to hear about your cat, but I am glad to hear that your kitty is pulling through!

  • Cynthia November 12, 2013, 2:05 pm

I’m so sorry for you loss. Cats are the best companions, your post made me cry too. How wonderful that you all took her in and gave her a safe, loving home. I am sure she loved every minute of it.

  • Katie D. November 12, 2013, 2:05 pm

I’m so sorry!! We have 2 cats and 2 dogs and I love each so differently. There is something about a cat on the chest that just can’t be replicated.

  • nancy November 12, 2013, 2:05 pm

I am so very sorry for the loss to you and your family. Please take some comfort in knowing you gave her such a loving home and that she was so happy being part of your family. She knew love and warmth and security. You loved her well and that’s all she wanted or needed. She passed knowing she was loved and wanted. That was a wonderful gift you gave her.

  • Dans November 12, 2013, 2:07 pm

So sorry for your loss Caitlyn, she was such a lovely cat and so beautiful too.

  • Katie@LifesNextBigStep November 12, 2013, 2:20 pm

I am so sorry for your loss 🙁 Our pets are all members of our family and know how hard it is to lose one of them. Bless you for being such a great mama to her!

  • Cristina November 12, 2013, 2:23 pm

I am so sorry for your loss. Losing a pet is one of life’s hardest events. Pippa was a gorgeous kitty and was lucky to have a caring family.

  • Lisa November 12, 2013, 2:40 pm

I’m so sorry. That is awful 🙁

Life is so unpredictable its scary!

  • Jasmine, bama + ry November 12, 2013, 2:40 pm

Oh Caitlin, I’m so sorry to hear that. I remember vividly when my cat passed. It just breaks your heart, I know. Sorry, friend. 🙁

  • Chelsea Wilson November 12, 2013, 2:41 pm

I’m so sorry. A similar thing happened to me last week. We took our cat for a check up last Monday and all was well then Wednesday she got a blood clot and passed away. She was only five. It was so sad and we miss her so much. I am so sorry for your loss and she was lucky to have a loving family.

    • Caitlin November 12, 2013, 2:45 pm

Did she have any signs or symptoms before? Pippa was FINE. Like, she had bounced up the stairs a minute prior! I’ve been reading online and apparently this DOES happen, but I just still can’t get over it. It’s freaking me out.

      • Chelsea November 12, 2013, 3:26 pm

She had always been a little off ( didn’t have great balance from infection when she was a kitten) but the Vet said that she was healthy but that she would just never have great balance. Right before the clot happened I thought she was getting sick but I noticed she was wheezing. I laid with her for a bit and petted her and she appeared to be fine after that. Next thing I know she started meowing and I just knew something was wrong. Her back legs stopped working and unfortunately for her it was incredibly painful. We made it to the vet but there was nothing they could do. It was really really hard and I kept thinking that her heart couldn’t have sounded normal during her check up and why didn’t they catch it but I had to stop because it was making it harder. She did have flea medicine after the vet but they called the company who makes it and felt confident that, that is not what caused it. I tried doing searching and couldn’t find much to justify why it happened to her.
It’s been especially hard when my 16 month old will meow looking for her. However, each day gets a bit more bearable. She was the sweetest cat.

  • Amanda November 12, 2013, 2:47 pm

Sending my healing thoughts to you and your family! I am so sorry for this sad loss!

  • Amanda November 12, 2013, 2:48 pm

I am so very sorry for your loss! I have three cats of my own and can only imagine the shock. Pippa had a wonderful, loving home.
Sending your family my best wishes. <3

  • Aishah @ Coffee, Love, Health November 12, 2013, 2:49 pm

Caitlin, how are YOU doing? I’m sure you’re in shock. I feel like it’s seriously been an emotional day for all your readers, I can only imagine what you’re going through. I think a part of me was so sad also because I know how much Henry loves the pets, he is so lucky to have so much love in his home from such a young age <3

    • Caitlin November 12, 2013, 2:50 pm

I’m doing horribly… thanks for asking. I’m super sad and in such shock. 🙁 I appreciate it Aishah.

      • Aishah @ Coffee, Love, Health November 12, 2013, 2:53 pm

  • Abbyabby November 12, 2013, 2:56 pm

I am so sorry to hear this! You are so right that she was so lucky to have you as a family. My love goes to all of you.

  • Sally November 12, 2013, 2:58 pm

Caitlin, I am so sorry about the loss of your cat. I know you treat your pets like family and I cannot imagine your grief at her sudden passing. You can take comfort that because of your family’s generous spirit and love Pippa lived in comfort and security.

I truly believe that all that matters when you look back and take inventory on your life is whether or not you helped someone else whenever you could – cats included. Be well.

  • Marisa November 12, 2013, 3:00 pm

So sorry Caitlin. You must still be in shock. She was a beautiful kitty & you took good care of her. Always remember that she was happy. My thoughts are with you & the rest of the family.

  • AutumnTao November 12, 2013, 3:01 pm

I’m so sorry for your family’s loss. That is incredibly shocking. This reminds me to be grateful for each day we have with our pets and our loved ones. Hoping you find joy in Pippa’s memories to get you through this difficult time. XO

  • Ksenija @ With An Open Mind November 12, 2013, 3:04 pm

I am so sorry for you guys. It breaks my heart that you lost your lovely cat when she was still so young. Just shows how precious time is. Send you my blessings.

  • Rebecca November 12, 2013, 3:24 pm

I am so sorry to hear about Pippa. My cat passed away in June, so I know how horrible it is to lose a pet. Rest in peace, Pippa. <3

  • brooke @ sweats & sweets November 12, 2013, 3:32 pm

So sorry to read about this! But you know, you are correct about her life. She was saved, by a family who showed her so much love and compassion that she probably would of traded everything to live it again, over and over.

  • Andrea November 12, 2013, 3:41 pm

Wow, I am so sorry. That must have been so scary. Pippa was a beautiful and amazing cat. I enjoyed your Pippa pictures and stories. RIP.

What a terrible loss, I am so sorry for you and your family.

  • Jessi November 12, 2013, 4:07 pm

Oh no! Poor Pippa 🙁 I am so sad. But so thankful she was at home and with her people when she passed.

So scary about young cats. Makes me want to run home and check on my sweet Java to make sure he’s ok.

  • Bethany November 12, 2013, 4:09 pm

I am so sorry for your loss, sending all of you (animals included!) lots of hugs!

  • Barbara Younger November 12, 2013, 4:10 pm

      Thank you!!

  • Lyn November 12, 2013, 4:10 pm

Want to add my condolences in there as well…. I’m sure you’re still in shock (not to mention traumatized to have it happen in front of your eyes)… I’m sending you giant internet hugs right now!

  • LizW November 12, 2013, 4:18 pm

Heart breaking!!! The loss of a pet is horrible. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this sad time.

  • claire November 12, 2013, 4:28 pm
  • Jen November 12, 2013, 4:28 pm

This broke my heart. I’m so sorry!

  • Erica November 12, 2013, 4:30 pm

I’m so sorry, Pippa seemed like a wonderful family member! Something very similar happened to my Dad’s cat, when it was only 2.5-3 years old. He was walking around one morning, then just stopped and fell over. I think this happens more commonly than we know. I’m so sorry! Losing a pet is so hard 🙁 Thinking about you all!

  • Jen November 12, 2013, 4:35 pm

Oh, Caitlin. I am so sorry. Brought tears to my eyes. I know her time on earth was happier for having spent it with your family. All the best.

  • Carly November 12, 2013, 4:36 pm

I’m so terribly sorry for your loss. My heart goes out to you. So sad

  • Lily November 12, 2013, 4:38 pm

My thoughts are with you guys. Cats are such wonderful additions to a home, and sweet Pippa was truly loved.

  • Sarah M November 12, 2013, 4:49 pm

Oh, Caitlin! I am sooo sorry for you and your family. Even though I had a young rescue dog go from perfectly healthy and normal to dead in 36 hours despite 24 hour care (I hate IMHA!), I can’t imagine seeing it unfold so suddenly before my eyes with no time to do anything. You gave her a great home and I like to believe that we’ll see all of our so loved pets over The Rainbow Bridge one day. Hope you have time to hug your boys and pups on this grey, cold, rainy NC day.

  • Elaine November 12, 2013, 4:50 pm

Oh my gosh! So sorry for your loss!

  • Foo November 12, 2013, 4:56 pm

So shocked and saddened to read this. RIP sweet Pippa. Hugs and prayers to you and your family… Any death is hard to understand and fully grasp, but when it’s so unexpected and comes without warning… You really find yourself at a complete loss for words. I sit clear across the country in silence with you. (((Hugs))) and prayers to you all.

  • Paola November 12, 2013, 5:01 pm

🙁 I am so sorry of hearing this… it must have been such a shock having it happened so suddendly. Loosing a pet is hard when they become a part of a family… I can’ t imagine it happening so quickly . Actually, having lost my cat Billy just a few months ago after a couple of weeks of daily vet visits, I can’t even say that being somehow “prepared” for the loss makes it any easier to accept. The only thing I can say is that it was clear she was happy and well loved, and at least spent a great year with your family. (((hugs))))

    • Caitlin November 12, 2013, 5:24 pm

      So sorry.

  • Sherilyn November 12, 2013, 5:10 pm

Caitlin, I’m so sorry for your loss. Pippa sounds like a great cat and I’m glad she had such a loving family to welcome her. My cat suffered “fainted” last year and I thought he was dead for several seconds, and eventually found out that he has congestive heart failure. It’s possible that Pippa had a similar disease that went undiagnosed. I had no idea that cats could get human diseases. I’m sorry you had to deal with seeing her like that – I remember how traumatic that felt. Lean on your husband and Henry for love and support.

    -Sherilyn

  • Sassy November 12, 2013, 5:37 pm

I am so sorry for your loss. Fur babies are so special and such an important part of life and, regardless of the circumstances, it takes a big part of our hearts when they’re gone. At least you know without a doubt that she was happy and knew she was loved. What a relief that she didn’t suffer, but I know you’re suffering. Your family is in our prayers during this time.

  • Vickie DeHamer November 12, 2013, 5:38 pm

    Hi Caitlin,

I read your blog all the time but have never commented. Just yesterday I blogged about how I lost my German Shepherd when a splenic tumor ruptured. It was also a sudden death and it really affected me. I’ve worked with animals for decades and it never gets easier to lose them. I’m so sorry.
    http://dogslovewoof.com/i-dont-know-why-you-say-goodbye/

Much love to you and your family –
    Vickie

    • Caitlin November 12, 2013, 5:39 pm

Thanks for sharing your story… I will definitely check it out later tonight. So sorry for your loss.

  • Emily November 12, 2013, 5:52 pm

I’m so sorry to hear it! I know exactly how you feel – we lost our dog right before last Christmas when he was only a year old. Pets are a part of the family and it’s so hard to lose them.

  • Kristin - My Life as a Teacup November 12, 2013, 6:09 pm

I’m so sorry to hear this, Caitlin. My eyes started welling up reading this, and then it hit me that I would have barely a clue what to do if something like this happened to my cat, Reiley. I had no idea that this kind of thing was common in young cats, and while Reiley’s not really “young” anymore, I don’t think I’d know where to start.

So now I’m going to brush up on my cat CPR. Thanks for unknowingly raising some awareness <3

  • Alison November 12, 2013, 6:13 pm

OH NO!!! I am sooo sorry to hear this! She seemed like a wonderful companion.
I am glad that she changed you into a cat person, though 🙂
You are all in my thoughts.

  • Trudy November 12, 2013, 6:18 pm

So sad for you guys. Good thing Kristien was able to take you to the vet so you could do the CPR on the way. At least you were able to be together as a family during this crisis.

  • Joey November 12, 2013, 6:23 pm

Shocked and saddened to read this today. Sending lots of love as you mourn the loss of your cat. My dogs are literally my children so my heart breaks for what you’re going through!

  • Christa November 12, 2013, 6:29 pm

I am so unbelievably sorry for your loss; losing a pet is so hard because they are a part of the family. Always there for you when you get home and will always stand by you no matter what.

  • Angela Daffron November 12, 2013, 6:45 pm

I am so sorry for your loss! Losing a pet is so hard! I know you gave Pippa an incredible life.

  • Jaye November 12, 2013, 6:53 pm

I am so very sorry. The shock must be incredible… but I don’t doubt that Pippa was also very thankful every day that she was part of your family too. 🙂

  • Amber K November 12, 2013, 7:12 pm

Absolutely awful. So, so sorry for your loss.

  • Jessica November 12, 2013, 7:28 pm

I’m so sorry for your loss. Our pets are such a part of our family. That first picture of her is so sweet.

  • Lindsay November 12, 2013, 7:28 pm

I’m so very sorry for your loss.

  • Dominique November 12, 2013, 7:38 pm

I am so sorry to hear about Pippa’s passing. I always loved seeing her photos on the blog and her interactions with everyone (canine and human). One of my own cats passed away suddenly a year and a half ago so I know exactly how you feel. It’s such a hard thing to go through but at least you were able to give Pippa a warm and loving home in the short time that you had her.

  • Katharine November 12, 2013, 7:44 pm

So sorry for your loss =(

  • Jen November 12, 2013, 7:46 pm

This is so sad. I am so very sorry for your loss. Pippa was so lucky to have such a caring family.

  • Carin November 12, 2013, 7:47 pm

Bless you, honey – it was such a shock to read this today. Hope all the support and messages from readers is helping you come to terms with the loss to the family.

I’ve always had rescue cats, both her in NZ and in the UK. Only one died like Pippa – the others have all had to be euthanised with illnesses/strokes… either way, any loss is awful. The responsibility of the parental role (whether pet or child) is immense, but always worthwhile in terms of the love you receive back and the richness added to your life.

The rawness of the pain will go and as you say, you’ll never forget Pippa and her special character. I’m so glad that she was able to enjoy a wonderful year with you guys and that for half of her short life, she knew such comfort and love. Hugs to you all x

  • Kathy November 12, 2013, 7:47 pm

    So sorry for your loss!

  • Lan November 12, 2013, 7:48 pm

I’m so sorry for your loss. Pippa was special indeed. For the relatively short time she was a part of your family, she brought so much love and happiness. Thank you for sharing some of those memories with us.

  • Elisabeth November 12, 2013, 8:06 pm

So sorry to hear about Pippa! She was a beautiful, grey kitty & I know you all will miss her a lot (even the doggies 😉 ). Hope you all are doing ok

  • Krista November 12, 2013, 8:30 pm

I am so heartbroken reading this. We have three cats and I know just how hard it is to lose a pet – they are members of the family. Pippa was a lucky cat to have a family who loved her so much – I am guessing you guys feel just as lucky to have had her in your lives.

  • Kathleen November 12, 2013, 8:46 pm

Caitlin, I am so sorry. My family just put down our 13 year old lab a few weeks ago, and it was so hard. It’s difficult getting used to the daily routine without that pet around because they are much more than a pet; they are truly family. You gave Pippa a beautiful home and a wonderful life in her short time here. Thinking of you!

  • marie November 12, 2013, 8:51 pm

I am so very, very sorry for your loss. However, I am also very, very happy that Pippa got to spend the second half of her all-too-short life as a much-loved member of your family.

    • marie November 12, 2013, 8:53 pm

I’ve also lost a much-beloved cat recently, and this brought me some comfort. I hope it does the same for you.

And God asked the feline spirit
Are you ready to come home?
Oh, yes, quite so, replied the precious soul
And, as a cat, you know I am most able
      To decide anything for myself.

Are you coming then? asked God.
      Soon, replied the whiskered angel
      But I must come slowly
For my human friends are troubled
For you see, they need me, quite certainly.

But don’t they understand? asked God
      That you’ll never leave them?
That your souls are intertwined. For all eternity?
That nothing is created or destroyed?
It just is….forever and ever and ever.

      Eventually they will understand,
      Replied the glorious cat
For I will whisper into their hearts
That I am always with them

  • Heather November 12, 2013, 8:53 pm

I’m so sorry Caitlin. She was beautiful and brought so much joy to your family. Thank you for adopting her and giving her such a loving home. My thoughts are with you as you try to heal from this.

  • Gloria November 12, 2013, 8:55 pm

I’m so sorry for your loss, Caitlin. That is incredibly sad and I can only imagine how hard it is for you and your family. Take the time to mourn and find some comfort in knowing what a great life you were able to give her for the time that she was here. I don’t even know you (duh!), but I can tell through your blog how much you love your animals and what a great home you have given them. Hope you find some peace, goodnight <3

  • Kathy November 12, 2013, 8:57 pm

Oh, I’m so so sorry for you! I hope you can take comfort in the fact that you provided her with such a loving home for the short time you had her. We’ve gone through it and it feels so hard at the time but better that you had her in your life than not. Take good care

  • Fran November 12, 2013, 9:03 pm

It’s so sad when a beloved pet dies because they are so much a part of the family. But rest assured that you gave her a wonderful home, and she loved your family. My cat had feline aids and she died about two and a half years ago. I still miss her every day!

  • Lauren @ Lettuce Eat Cake November 12, 2013, 9:10 pm

Caitlin, I am so very sorry for your family’s loss. How utterly shocking and heartbreaking to lose her so suddenly. Sending you a big virtual hug and hoping for comfort and healing. Pets are truly family members. What a tragic event, but so glad you got to give her a wonderful family during her short but fantastic life. You were lucky to have had each other.

  • Arlene @ Adventures in Weight Loss November 12, 2013, 9:16 pm

There’s nothing I can say that hasn’t already been said. I’m so sorry for your loss. Judging by your blog posts, she was a great cat.

  • Laurie November 12, 2013, 9:20 pm

Caitlin, I’m so sorry about Pippa! I can’t believe what happen to her! She was a beautiful cat and was very lucky to have you as her family. So glad you were there when it happened so she wasn’t alone. Thoughts and prayers for you and your family.

  • Laura Ann November 12, 2013, 9:24 pm

Oh Caitlin, I am so, so sorry. My heart breaks for you. Sending love.

  • Kelli November 12, 2013, 9:36 pm

🙁 Here I sit weeping in my living room. This was the last post I expected tonight. I have loved reading about Pippa and all of her funny moments. That picture you posted the other day of her in the kennel was hilarious–and I love the picture of her playing with Henry. Great memories–but absolutely heartbreaking.

  • Jen November 12, 2013, 9:40 pm

So, so sorry for your loss!

  • Katie - Life Discombobulated November 12, 2013, 9:47 pm

I’m so sorry, Caitlin! How very sad. I gave my kitty an extra snuggle tonight after I read this. No matter how long they’re with us, our pets are such an important part of our lives. I’ll be thinking of you and your family.

  • Jillian @ Reshape Your Life November 12, 2013, 9:54 pm

I am so sorry for your loss! I have no words to express how sorry I am. I have been I n a similar situation, though I didn’t own the cat (I worked at a no-kill animal shelter), but iChat a cat die in my arms. I don’t wish that experience on anyone. I too tried CPR (out of sheer desperation) while I waited for the vet with no success (infection). It’s devastating. I hope you and your family can begin to heal soon. Y’all are in my thoughts.

  • Laura November 12, 2013, 10:00 pm

    Caitlin,
I’m so very, very sorry to hear about Pippa. You and your family gave her such a wonderful, loving home. The love you have for all your pets is unmistakable. I was crying so much when I read this post. You have my deepest sympathy.

  • Sara November 12, 2013, 10:10 pm

    So sorry for your loss!

  • Talia November 12, 2013, 10:13 pm

Heartbreakingly. I’m so sorry for your loss.

  • Caitlin E. November 12, 2013, 10:21 pm

I am so sorry Caitlin. I can’t believe the post I have read. Like you and your family, I expected for Pippa to be with you guys at least until Henry was much older. My heart goes out to you guys!

  • Amy I. November 12, 2013, 10:21 pm

I am so sorry. I had a young cat die of a heat attack and it was heartbreaking. Pippa was a beautiful cat and I’m sorry for your loss.

  • Elizabeth M. November 12, 2013, 10:29 pm

Heartbreaking. I’m so sorry, but also so happy she had a loving home thanks to your big hearts!

  • Pamela November 12, 2013, 10:29 pm

Oh Caitlin I’m so so sorry. A similar thing happened to my two year old kitty two Christmases ago. I left to go to the gym, did a half-hearted workout and retuned home 45 kind later to fin my little Gemma dead. I don’t know how or why she died, but I hope it was painless. I miss her to this day!!! You did a good thing giving Pippa a loving home for a little while- perhaps you’ll consider it again.

  • Kristin November 12, 2013, 10:51 pm

I’m sorry Caitlin. Pippa seemed like such a sweet, wonderful cat.

  • Sam November 12, 2013, 10:56 pm

I’m so sorry. That is just heartbreaking.

  • Jess November 12, 2013, 10:58 pm

I can’t even tell you how much this broke my heart. I am an avid cat lover (I have three) and when you decided to get a feline for your household, I was so excited for you and your family. Cats are lovely creatures and really do bring big personalities (especially when mixed with other animals and people). I am glad that you all had the unique experience of having a loving, cuddly sweet kitty and I am SO SO glad Pippa had the privilege of calling you all her family. So many cats don’t get that opportunity. I am just so very sorry that it was such a short time and this sudden inexplicable loss happened. As you said, it is good that she had her routine morning of Henry’s excitement and greetings and your cuddles the night before. She definitely, without a doubt, felt loved in your household. I seriously had the ugly cry face going on at the end with all the pictures of her. She was a beauty and I will miss seeing updates about her. Sending you lots of hugs and (lots of kitty love from my three) from NYC.

  • katyrenee November 12, 2013, 11:14 pm

I’m so sorry. Our first cat did the same thing. It sucked. It still does.

  • tanyajay November 12, 2013, 11:17 pm

I’m so sorry for your loss. Losing a pet is so hard 🙁 they always love unconditionally and seem to offer us comfort when nothing else can. You were lucky to have each other no matter how short her life was she had a purpose. I lost my cat at the age of two as well. His light burned very bright and short and I always smile when I think of him. I hope your memories of Pippa will bring a smile to you as well.

  • Amber November 12, 2013, 11:48 pm

OMG Caitlin and family, I’m so so so sorry to hear this. I didn’t even know this could happen. Actually at first when I started reading I thought that maybe Pippa was a senior kitty you had adopted, I didn’t even know she was so young. I would be so devastated. My heart goes out to you and your family.

  • Cassandra November 13, 2013, 12:05 am

I’m so sorry for your loss. Feel warm inside knowing that you gave her a home that she would never have had elsewhere. Rescuing animals is the best thing we can do as humans.

  • Melissa November 13, 2013, 12:07 am

I am so sorry for your loss. Hugging my pups extra tight tonight in her memory/honor.

  • tiffany November 13, 2013, 1:58 am

oh no! i’m sorry for your loss…pets make their way into our hearts sooo so quickly. 🙁

  • Laura November 13, 2013, 4:16 am

I’m so sorry Caitlin. It sadly is quite common in cats and there is nothing you could have possibly done differently. Exactly the same thing happened to my Mum’s cat. It was full of energy, was playing around all morning, and then went outside onto the patio. Mum looked out of the window a minute later and saw her lying down. Mum said she just knew straight away. The vet said that cats often have inbuilt genetic defects that make them prone to massive strokes or cardiac arrests. We were very upset, as of course you are too, but after a while we took a lot of comfort from the fact that she didn’t suffer at all – just like Pippa. Thinking of you xx

  • amanda November 13, 2013, 4:22 am

Oh Caitlyn I’m so so sorry! Pippa was a beautiful cat and so lucky to have you as her forever home. This just breaks my heart, pets are so special!

Oh no Caitlin, I am so sorry. That is terrible news.

  • Judy November 13, 2013, 5:22 am

I am so, so sorry for your loss. We had to put our beloved Simba to sleep this year because of lymphoma. I felt as tho he was way too young & he was just a couple of months shy of his 13th birthday!

    Big, big hugs.

  • L November 13, 2013, 6:09 am

Oh I am so sorry. What a hard and sudden loss. Sending love and kitty hugs!

    ((((Hugs))))
I am so sorry for your loss.

  • Melanie November 13, 2013, 8:11 am

I am so very sorry Caitlin! I just saw this when I got to work this morning and started to cry – I have 5 cats at home and cannot imagine. My son (also Henry!) really enjoys the cats and I hope they will be with us as he gets older. Although they are already all around 12/13. Pippa was very lucky to have found all of you to care for her! Do you think you will rescue another cat?

    My condolences.

  • Melanie November 13, 2013, 8:15 am

I am so glad too that she was able to have her normal morning routine and went quickly with no suffering.

  • Kermit November 13, 2013, 8:32 am

So shocked and sad to read this.
Pippa knew love and you gave her the gift of a safe , sweet and happy life.
Sending you a huge hug across the miles .
    J xx
P.s your Mum is so beautiful to write her ode to Pippa 🙂

I’m so so sorry Caitlin. Losing a pet is a horrible, horrible experience…they become a part of our family so quickly. I will have your family in my thoughts.

  • Kris November 13, 2013, 8:45 am

  • stephanie November 13, 2013, 9:38 am

So sorry – Pippa was very lucky to have an amazing home with you where she was so happy. Her cute personality shone through in the photos – my favorite was the one you posted of her in the bathroom a while back. I’m glad she had a happy last day and didn’t suffer.

  • Bobbie November 13, 2013, 10:54 am

I am so sorry Caitlin! I cannot even begin to imagine how you must feel! Sending love to you and your family..

Noooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’m so so so sorry. 🙁 Sending you love!

  • Ashley November 13, 2013, 1:44 pm

I am so sorry for your lost. That is so hard. When we had to put down our family pet it was very hard (2 years ago in March). They become family members. Also, a similar thing happened to my friends dog several years ago. I don’t actually remember what was the cause (brain aneurysm, maybe?), but it was devastating. Maybe something to think about is that you are reminding so many people to brush up or learn CPR – so who knows maybe this will save a life.

  • Aja November 13, 2013, 2:11 pm

I am so sorry to hear about Pippa! I am glad she went without suffering, though. It can be so hard to lose a family member, and that’s what a pet is. Sending you and your family lots of love.

  • Kristina November 13, 2013, 2:25 pm

Oh no! 🙁 I am so, so sorry for your loss. You gave her a great home, and it was obvious how happy she was with all of you. I’m so glad she didn’t suffer.

  • Becky November 13, 2013, 5:44 pm

I’m so sorry for your loss! She had a wonderful life with you and your family, and I’m sure she knew she was loved. Hugs to you!

  • Megan November 13, 2013, 8:00 pm

Oh this is so sad. I’m so sorry for your loss. Pets are more than just pets… their our family. I do rely a lot on my two dogs for comfort… for everything. Take care. And again, so sorry!!

  • Becky November 13, 2013, 8:07 pm

Oh Caitlin I’m so sorry. Its just heartbreaking to lose a furry family member. She’s across the rainbow bridge with my Jasper. He’ll look out for her!

  • Erin November 13, 2013, 8:49 pm

Oh NO I am so sad to hear this. I just loved seeing pictures of this beautiful girl and her name fit her so perfectly. She reminded of my sweet kitty Brick that we lost after only 6 short months of having him. It was so devastating…I still think of him all the time even though it’s been 2 years and we have several other cats now.

Animals are so amazing…when one gets sick or we lose one, it just kills me.

  • Jessica November 14, 2013, 12:41 am

Caitlin, I am so very sorry for your loss. I instantly had tears streaming down my face as I read this post. I lost my two elderly kitties earlier this year and it is one of the hardest things I’ve ever experienced, I’m still dealing with their loss. Hugs to you and your family, you gave her a great home and she was obviously very loved. <3

  • Reenie November 14, 2013, 12:05 pm

Oh my goodness…. I’m so so sorry. It’s so hard when one of our pets pass….. my thoughts and prayers are with you all.

  • Kelly November 14, 2013, 1:14 pm

This was shocking to read. I’m so very sorry for your loss, Caitlin. One of the reasons I like reading your blog is because of your compassion towards animals, and I’m saddened you had to experience something so traumatic. As others have commented, you gave her a loving home for that last year of her life, which is more than so many other cats have. I know this may not be on your radar any time soon, but having read how much you love James, Maggie, and Pippa, I hope you will consider adopting/rescuing another cat one day. We used to live in an area full of no-kill shelters, and a lot of spay/neuter programs for wild cats. We moved to another state and it’s so sad to see the lack of no-kill shelters here. I wish I had room for a few more. I hope you find peace in knowing that you truly gave her love and life, and enriched Henry’s life by having her there. It’s so hard to lose them, but the love they give outweighs that times a million. Big hugs for all of you during this sad time.

  • Cate November 14, 2013, 8:03 pm

So sorry for your family’s loss. Pippa sounded like a great cat.
They become such a big part of your family. We recently lost our cat Marbles a couple months ago, so I understand how tough it is to lose a pet. My thoughts are with you all.

  • Lauren November 15, 2013, 11:13 am

So sorry to hear this. My cat died the same way at 4.5 yrs old. It’s so sad.

  • Luv What You Do November 15, 2013, 1:21 pm

    Oh my gosh!
I am so sorry to hear about Pippa! I remember when you adopted her!
My heart goes out to all of you. As we had to put down our cat last year, I know exactly how you feel. We just got a new kitten and I don’t know what I would do if something happened.
Big hugs from our family to yours!

  • Kelsey @ Ramblings of Change November 15, 2013, 2:03 pm

I’ve been thinking of you and your family for the past couple of days and hope you are all coping well. Such a sad time, but I hope you are able to reflect on the happiness she was able to bring all of you.

  • Caitlin November 17, 2013, 10:15 pm

I am so very sorry Caitlin. I have such a soft spot for cats. My cat went through a urinary blockage a few months ago and I was afraid we were going to lose him. He has recovered greatly, but I still get nervous. Thinking about you.

  • Lauren March 17, 2014, 11:26 am

Rest in peace Pippa. I’m so sorry for your family’s loss Caitlin.

  • Deb Hartwell May 5, 2014, 1:06 pm

I am so sorry for your loss. We lost our beloved Desmond this past weekend in a similar manner. Very out of the blue. He was completely fine in the morning. That afternoon, I found him struggling to breathe and rushed him to the vet, where they found a large amount of fluid in his lungs. They removed what they could, but he was suffering and the fluid was likely caused by a heart defect of sorts. There was no fixing him. Within hours of finding him like that, I had to say goodbye to him. I am glad your Pippa did not suffer and I hope that you and your family are able to find the time to heal together. <3

    • Caitlin May 5, 2014, 2:39 pm

So sorry to hear about your loss as well. Thank you very much <3

  • MelanieF December 1, 2014, 11:21 am

I needed to read this post again…Satuday we lost our cat the same way. He jumped off the table, fell right besides me on the floor and he stopped breathing…all of this under 30 seconds. He was just his normal self a few seconds before and than he was dead. Our hearts are filled with sadness! I needed to read this post again to help me cope with the pain of losing our beloved cat and to know that we are not alone!

    • Caitlin December 1, 2014, 2:03 pm

Ohmgiod I am SOOO sorry Melanie. My heart breaks for you! 🙁 I’m so sorry.
