YOU GUYS.  Guess who woke up at 5:45 AM and went for a four mile run?

THIS WOMAN.

I am so-so-so not a morning workout person anymore (I think I am allergic to unnecessary early rising after the newborn stage) but I have a busy day planned so it was 5:45 AM or never. My BFF Lauren is flying into Charlotte from Singapore!  Remember Lauren?  She ran the Disney Marathon with me back in 2010 and is one of my favorite people, ever.

I feel incredibly chilly just thinking of that damn marathon (it was 14 degrees at the starting line… in Orlando… it was miserable).

Here’s the thing about this morning’s workout… Maybe I’m just super excited for Lauren’s arrival, but my run felt glorious. The air was crisp, I was not pushing a 45-pound jogging stroller, and – all in all – it was a lovely way to wake up.  Maybe I’ll convert back to a morning runner yet…

Speaking of workouts, here’s Last Week’s Workouts:

Monday: Rest

Tuesday: 1000 yard swim

Wednesday: 2 hour bike run

Thursday: 1 hour bike ride

Friday: 1000 yard swim + 2 mile run

Saturday: Rest

Sunday: 3000 yard swim + 3 hour bike + 3 mile run

Totals: 5000 yards of swimming, 5 hours of biking, 5 miles of running

A slow week (save for Sunday’s workout!) but that’s due to sickness.  I’m 95% healthy now… I wish I could just kick this bug 100%!

In other news, I hosted a dinner party on Sunday night and served Whole Foods takeout… and I think now my friends believe I am a seriously amazing cook.  Hey, no one asked if I actually cooked everything, so I wasn’t going to announce that I had a bunch of cardboard boxes in the trash can.  (I become more and more like my mother every single day.)

I guess the secret is out now…. Smile

No Meat Athlete: Run on Plants and Discover Your Fittest, Fastest, Happiest Self

The No Meat Athlete book is officially available!  Wahoo!

2013-10-01_0722

Click through for your chance to win a copy of Matt’s just-released book. Don’t worry, this ‘click through’ feature won’t be a regular thing on HTP – it’s just for giveaways and reviews.

My friend Matt of No Meat Athlete creates amazing content and e-books. That’s why I was so thrilled to hear that he was publishing a book. The official release date is TODAY but I managed to finagle a review copy a week ago, and I have to say – it’s brilliant! I also pre-ordered a copy a few months back, so I can’t wait to see the actual book when Amazon delivers it later today.

The thing that I love most about NMA is Matt makes being an athletic vegetarian seem so natural. Transitioning to a vegetarian diet (or just a plant-based one) can be super confusing – add on that the demands of an exercise routine and there’s lots of room for nutritional error.  The NMA book breaks down how to eat the healthiest, most satisfying plant-based diet possible, as well as tips and tricks for making regular exercise part of your life.  And recipes! So many recipes!

This book is a great guide for someone who is just transitioning to a veggie diet or wants to learn how to maximize their eats.  And it’s an excellent resource for those interested in running or triathlons but want to know how to take it to the ‘next level.’

I have no doubt the No Meat Athlete book is going to be a huge success.  Look – it’s already tearing up the charts on Amazon!

2013-10-01_0730

Matt offered an HTP reader a copy, too!  If you want to win a copy of the new No Meat Athlete book, simply leave a comment telling me whether you’re a morning exerciser, a lunchtime sweater, or a bedtime baller.  When do you prefer to get your sweat on?

Morning! Morning! I do long runs on Saturday mornings with my peeps whether or not I’m training for something. It started as a way to beat the heat and the only time we were all available during the weekend. Now it is like therapy. It is a beautiful thing, getting out there as the sun is rising. Often we see deer, and it is quiet and crisp.

  • sarah October 1, 2013, 7:46 am

On the weekends I’m a morning running for sure, there is just something about knowing I can nap afterwards that makes it easier for me to get up. On the weekdays I have to exercise right after work around 6pm. If I go home I’ll never make it back to the gym 🙂

  • Amye October 1, 2013, 7:48 am

I am more of a morning girl but I don’t mind going out for an evening run either.

  • Adrienne J October 1, 2013, 7:50 am

It’s funny because I know a lot of afternoon/night exercises but I feel like I’m dying when I do them! I think it’s a fueling issue. I’m a morning runner all the way! Nothing like taking in the peaceful road and pretty stars before everyone else is up!

  • Nicole @ Curly Mommy October 1, 2013, 7:56 am

I usually go in the morning, because that’s what works best with my husband’s work schedule. I really want to get a treadmill soon so that I can run during my kids’ naptime!

  • Kel October 1, 2013, 7:58 am

I am best in the morning —then there are no excuses.

  • Kate October 1, 2013, 8:00 am

Definitely afternoon. I am too tired in the morning or at night to really put in much of an effort.

  • Kelsey October 1, 2013, 8:01 am

I work a really weird schedule, so I take it whenever I can fit it in! (Much like you I feel although my job is not nearly as cool!). I like to exercise mid day though!

  • Laurel October 1, 2013, 8:05 am

I wish I was morning, but it’s usually closer to bedtime.

  • Katie D October 1, 2013, 8:08 am

I would prefer mid-morning sweater but alas, with work, I am a bedtime baller!

  • Rebecca October 1, 2013, 8:09 am

Definitely morning! With my work schedule, most of the time if I don’t get a workout in the morning, it just won’t happen. Plus, I can be the queen of excuses if you give me extra time to come up with them.

  • Lucy October 1, 2013, 8:10 am

Definitely in the a.m. Although, as a grad student I take what I can get!

  • Michelle @ A Healthy Mrs October 1, 2013, 8:13 am

My absolute favorite time to workout is late in the morning around 11:00, but of course that only really works on the weekends!

  • Lauren @ The Highlands Life October 1, 2013, 8:14 am

Good for you getting out there and getting her done! I have to so morning usually too if I’m going to get it done at all.

  • Katie @ Talk Less, Say More October 1, 2013, 8:26 am

I’m definitely a morning sweater but after having to do more lunchtime workouts this past year due to my schedule, I sometimes find that I want to skip the morning sweat and get it in a bit later if I can. What I do know, is that if it doesn’t happen by lunchtime, it’s probably NOT going to happen…

  • Fiona October 1, 2013, 8:27 am

I’m definitely all about working out in the early morning. Its the best way to start the day!

  • Sara @ LovingOnTheRun October 1, 2013, 8:29 am

I am usually a morning exerciser but the earlier in the day the harder it is for me! I love that feeling though when you have finished your workout and you still have the whole day ahead of you!

  • Camille October 1, 2013, 8:29 am

It has to happen in the morning, otherwise the exercise is most likely not going to happen that day.

  • Barca Mama October 1, 2013, 8:29 am

I am always in awe of how you make time for workouts:-) I would sum my workout timing up as, ‘nap time or never;’ when the baby sleeps, I sweat (or at least that is the plan).

  • Amy @ The Little Honey Bee October 1, 2013, 8:30 am

I am a morning exerciser all the way! Depending on my run/workout my alarm is set anywhere between 4:45 and 5:30am 🙂

  • Erin D. October 1, 2013, 8:34 am

While some mornings are really hard, I am definitely a morning workout person. I love feeling like I have already accomplished something in my day!

  • Liza October 1, 2013, 8:34 am

Morning or evening for me! But sometimes in the dead of winter I’ll squeeze a run in during the afternoon if I can make it work.

  • Melanie October 1, 2013, 8:35 am

I’d love to be a morning exerciser, but due to my work schedule I’m more of a bedtime baller. At least I’m getting my exercise in when I can though!

  • Lauren Michalak October 1, 2013, 8:35 am

During the week I am a lunch time sweater, I am fortunate to work in an office where I can pull this off. Long runs are done on Saturday mornings though, I usually wake up earlier on Saturday to run than I do during the week for work! The things we do for our “hobbies!”

  • Lindsey October 1, 2013, 8:35 am

Morning. This typically works MUCH better if I’m meeting up with someone to hold me accountable!

  • Kelly V. October 1, 2013, 8:41 am

I love the early morning sessions at the gym, but have been finding myself there in the evenings more thanks to that cozy bed! I workout harder in the morning when te gymis least crowded 🙂

  • Amina @Furiously Writing October 1, 2013, 8:42 am

I prefer to workout in the morning. But if I don’t make it, I try to squeeze in at least a short walk later in the day. I love the ROAR! feeling of exercising first thing in the am!! I’m also more likely to make healthier choices throughout the day since I’ve started off on such a good/sweaty foot.

  • Julianna October 1, 2013, 8:43 am

I love to work out after work before heading home for the evening.

  • Dori October 1, 2013, 8:44 am

I am a morning exerciser. I love getting it over with and having the evening free, and I am a morning person so I don’t have a hard time waking up.

  • Sara October 1, 2013, 8:44 am

    Morning! or it doesn’t happen

  • Erin October 1, 2013, 8:50 am

I’m always aiming for the morning, but somehow I never make it out the door before 2:00 so I guess I’m an afternoon athlete!

  • Faith Plvan October 1, 2013, 8:50 am

Mornings! You get to use the day before anyone else does!

  • Kristina October 1, 2013, 8:52 am

I like getting my workout done in the morning, but unfortunately it usually happens after work.

  • Kinsey October 1, 2013, 8:53 am

I’m a morning exerciser for steady state runs but an afternoon exerciser for speed workouts and weights. I want to make sure I’m awake when I’m sprinting or swinging heavy things around!

  • Hannah October 1, 2013, 8:56 am

These days with a 1 year old I am a “whenever I can possibly fit it in” exerciser

  • Steph October 1, 2013, 8:57 am

Mid morning works best, but not always realistic with my work schedule. Otherwise I will do an evening workout when get home from work. NMA book looks great!

  • Amanda October 1, 2013, 9:01 am

    Lunchtime or bedtimee!

  • Lauren F October 1, 2013, 9:03 am

I love to workout right after work. Then I can go home and shower, and the rest of the day is mine.

  • Rachel C. October 1, 2013, 9:07 am

Evening workouts for me….except long runs, I prefer to get those done in the morning

  • Jenn F October 1, 2013, 9:07 am

I’m completely a morning person! Usually hot yoga, occasionally circuit training.

  • Tory October 1, 2013, 9:08 am

Morning exerciser over here! Although a small part of my wants to die every morning when my alarm goes off at 5, I always feel great when I finish and know I can just relax and veg out after work.

  • Kelly October 1, 2013, 9:08 am

Morning runner/swimmer- I feel as though there is no better way to start your day.

  • Laura October 1, 2013, 9:10 am

Bedtime Baller! My dog and I were out there last night. She was rocking her light up collar and I was wearing my reflective vest and carrying a flashlight. Couple of nerds but safe!!

  • Stephanie Norton October 1, 2013, 9:10 am

I’m more of a morning excerciser but more like the 8:30-9 time not a early morning person! 🙂

  • Ginna October 1, 2013, 9:11 am

Late morning! I like to go when it’s still cool outside but it takes me forever to talk myself out the door, ha!

  • Liz October 1, 2013, 9:16 am

I am def a night time sweat-er! I seem to sleep better after I run and then stretch. Plus, I have never had a desire to get up before my already early alarm to get my exercise in…even though I have my insane moments where 4:30AM sounds fun!

  • JennyD October 1, 2013, 9:21 am

I absolutely have to do my workouts in the morning. I will make excuses at any other time of day, so I have to hit the pavement before I am awake enough to talk myself out of it. Fortunately, my (canine) running partner is an early and enthusiastic riser!

  • Kristy T October 1, 2013, 9:21 am

I prefer to work out in the late morning hours, say 9am or 10am. But since that only happens on the weekends because of work, I usually workout in the evening.

Would love to win a copy of this book!! I have been a no-meat athlete for several years and the book looks right up my alley 🙂

  • Jennifer October 1, 2013, 9:22 am

Morning, morning, morning! I am actually more motivated at 5 am than at 5 pm. After-work is NOT my prime time.

  • Zana October 1, 2013, 9:23 am

Morning – Not going to happen. Lunch – Nada…Too sweaty, no time for shower. Bedtime – It is just right!

  • Nancy October 1, 2013, 9:23 am

For the past four months I do a 6 a.m. crossfit workout Monday-Friday. Every morning I go and get my butt kicked in a whole new way, but I love it.

  • Bo October 1, 2013, 9:26 am

Oh, lunch time for sure. I like to write and plan in the mornings and let my breakfast do its thing and head out while the sun is shinning. It is a bad habbit to have at the height of summer though.

  • Maryz October 1, 2013, 9:27 am

I love morning workouts. Unfortunately, due to my job, I only get to work out in the morning on the weekends. Normally, I’m getting my sweat on after work!

  • Amanda October 1, 2013, 9:28 am

I want to be a morning exerciser, but with no coffee, it’s a no go =(. I like to sneak it in at lunch, or right before dinner =)

  • Anna October 1, 2013, 9:29 am

Morning for me! Otherwise it will never happen!

  • Emily October 1, 2013, 9:32 am

Love your blog!! I also love No Meat Athlete, both blog and podcast. I am training for my first marathon (Rehoboth Beach, Dec 7- can’t beat Dogfish Head beer as a motivator). During the week I run after work, often with my friend/coach and her husband who are running the half at Rehoboth. When I do my long run, it’s in the morning. Although I’m going to have to get up earlier as these get even longer. Next week is my first 18 miler!

  • Kelsey @ Ramblings of Change October 1, 2013, 9:33 am

I’m usually a morning girl! But with my school schedule this semester, It has been both morning or evening workouts to work around everything! I love doing them in the morning because then your exercise is done for the day!

  • Ivanna October 1, 2013, 9:33 am

I’m a rotating shift girl, so I work every set of hours imaginable! On a day off, I do my fitness in the late mornings:)

  • Kristen October 1, 2013, 9:36 am

I love working out in the morning every chance I get! Cool giveaway, thanks for hosting!

  • Kelli Jamison October 1, 2013, 9:36 am

I used to be a morning sweater, but now that I’m a new mom, it’s whenever I can sneak it in…which is often pushing the jogger! Love NMA!

  • Alana October 1, 2013, 9:39 am

I’m definitely a morning exerciser! I love being able to make after work plans on the fly and not have to worry about missing a work out. I was raised a vegetarian and would love to read this book!

  • Cate October 1, 2013, 9:41 am

Morning works best for me to exercise. Later in the day tends to get too busy.

  • Emily @ The Good Era October 1, 2013, 9:43 am

Awesome job! I love getting in morning workouts but it’s so hard getting back into the routine if you take even just one or two days off….especially as it gets cooler and darker in the mornings!!

  • Tiana October 1, 2013, 9:50 am

I usually am up when the sun is up so I try to squeeze in a workout then to start my day on the right foot! 🙂 however sometimes breakfast is calling and I have to wait till the evening.

  • Ashley October 1, 2013, 9:50 am

I’d been a morning exerciser for most of my life but recently I’ve been digging the post-work sweat session. I guess it’s just nice to mix it up sometimes.

  • Lisa October 1, 2013, 9:51 am

Without a doubt, the morning. Get it out of the way..it’s quiet and great to get that accomplishment done first thing in the morning.

  • Monica October 1, 2013, 9:53 am

    In the AM for sure!

  • Kaci October 1, 2013, 9:54 am

During the week it’s always around 6pm; during the weekend early morning. Love it.

  • Ashley N. October 1, 2013, 10:01 am

Morning! I faceplant on the couch after work, so if it isn’t accomplished in the am, it won’t happen in the pm. 🙂 However, I will say this changes with seasons.. I’m much more open to pm workouts in spring/summer but when winter comes, it’s too hard not to mention dark!

  • Joy October 1, 2013, 10:05 am

I am 100% a morning exerciser. Not necessarily a crack-of-dawn morning exerciser, but it’s the best kind of day for me if I can get up reasonably early, get my workout in, and feel great for the day.

Thanks for the chance to win!

  • Beth October 1, 2013, 10:07 am

I would love to be a morning exerciser-but alas I just cannot make myself get out of bed, so I am totally an evening, after work exerciser…

    • Aerevyn October 1, 2013, 10:52 am

      I am soooooooooo with you. : )

  • Caroline October 1, 2013, 10:08 am

I am definitely a morning person. If I wait until the afternoon, it often doesn’t happen…

  • Kat October 1, 2013, 10:10 am

After almost a solid year of being a morning exerciser I have started to switch to lunchtime/early afternoon workouts. I’m in my last semester of grad school (wooo!!!) and all of my classes are from 7-10pm! Although I do love sleeping in, I hope to switch back once I’m done with classes. I just love feeling energized in the morning and not having to worry about it the rest of the day is a huge bonus.

  • SunnyD October 1, 2013, 10:15 am

Morning exerciser all the way! I get up at 5:00 am six days a week.

Although for the past few months I’ve been also going to the gym several evenings per week as a trained for my first Olympic tri. It was on Sunday and I rocked it! I had so much fun, and I got so much inspiration and advice from HTP.

    • Caitlin October 1, 2013, 10:16 am

I’m so happy for you! Congrats!

  • Lindsay October 1, 2013, 10:20 am

I definitely prefer morning exercise. If I don’t do it first thing, I don’t do it at all!

  • ellie October 1, 2013, 10:23 am

I am a morning person, all the way…. I read about people working ot later in the day and I am like, “HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE?” I am lucky if I can sit up straight by 5pm, let alone contemplate a workout!

  • CheekE October 1, 2013, 10:29 am

I’m a bedtime baller. It’s the only way I can make it work with already having to get up at 6:15 just to get out the door with two kids and a husband in time for work (and not being a “morning” person).

  • Abbey October 1, 2013, 10:31 am

It’s easiest for me to work out RIGHT after work or school — if I go straight to the gym or if I don’t even sit down before changing into work out clothes!

  • mary October 1, 2013, 10:32 am

Right after work. If I delay it at all it’s 1000% harder to get started. Plus, training for a full IM means ALOT of hours spent training so if i leave it too long it’s past my bedtime!

  • Elizabeth October 1, 2013, 10:33 am

I’m definitely a morning person! It’s harder to get out the door in the winter when it’s cold and the sun rises later in the morning, but it feels so good to start my day out with a run!

  • Bryna October 1, 2013, 10:40 am

I love how good it feels to get an early am workout but I love how light my legs are with an evening run. Maybe an afternoon run would be a good happy medium once the weather cools down a bit.

  • Miranda @ Lovely Wife Lovely Life October 1, 2013, 10:41 am

I’m a lunchtime sweater. Actually, post-classes go-getter 😉 I usually work out right after my last class of the day which is (at the latest) 2. Today my classes were cancelled (yay for sick professors!) so I’m working out before lunch. While doing my laundry!

  • Lori October 1, 2013, 10:50 am

5 am every weekday! I’m either running or doing a Jillian Michaels DVD. Lunchtime has never really been an option and by the time I get home, finish dinner, help with homework, hit whatever PTA/sports is on the schedule that night I am ready to head to bed.

  • Aerevyn October 1, 2013, 10:51 am

Bedtime baller! (partly because that sounds like sweating with AC/DC – hahaha!)

I bet my day would be more sparkly if I exercised in the morning, but it’s night time all the way for this girlie!

  • Tera October 1, 2013, 10:52 am

I definitely prefer working out in the morning but lately with my work schedule that means 3:30-4am wake up calls if I want to workout. That’s a bit too early 🙁

  • Katie October 1, 2013, 10:55 am

Right now I’m an early evening runner aka a run-commuter. It’s glorious. After a year of 3 half marathon training cycles I no longer have the motivation for early morning workouts.

  • Emily October 1, 2013, 10:56 am

I’ve been becoming more and more of a morning exerciser. My ideal time is after breakfast has digested, so I’ve had time to wake up a bit (:

  • Logan @ Mountains and Miles October 1, 2013, 10:58 am

I always feel better when I get it done in the mornings, but I really like sleeping…

Sometimes I run to work or home from work, or sometimes even over my lunch break, because if I don’t get it done before I get home from work, it’s not going to happen.

  • Kate October 1, 2013, 11:06 am

Morning, for sure! If I don’t start my day off with a solid workout, or even just a long walk, I don’t feel ready for the day.

  • Trang October 1, 2013, 11:07 am

I workout whenever I can. I have awakened at 4 AM to just get a run in after nursing my daughter. Sometimes, I have to wait until my kids bath time to get a run in, or workout after they go to bed for the night.

  • Chelsea October 1, 2013, 11:11 am

I’d love to be a morning exerciser, but I just can’t seem to get out of my slow and easy mornings mindset. With that, I usually work out right before or a few hours before dinner, around 4 or 5 pm!

  • Stephanie October 1, 2013, 11:17 am

I am totally a morning runner, but my new job starts way too early for that to continue! So now I’m grumbling as I put my shoes on at 4pm. 🙂

  • Jessica @ FromtheKitchentotheRoad October 1, 2013, 11:19 am

I’m more of a morning exerciser. I am joing a gym this week and will be taking a few evening classes but will still be running or spinning in the morning.

  • Suzanne @ hello, veggy! October 1, 2013, 11:25 am

I am a morning exerciser; got up for 12 k this am at 5:30!!

  • Natalie @ Free Range Human October 1, 2013, 11:26 am

I prefer to workout in the morning, but since I’m back to teaching I can’t make myself get up any earlier!

  • Andrea Ramos-Lewis October 1, 2013, 11:30 am

Bedtime baller. My body needs the day to gather enough glucose and sustain me.

  • Katie RoseS October 1, 2013, 11:32 am

Oh how I wish I were a morning person. Alas, I am not. When I used to work evenings, I loved getting my sweat session in during the afternoon hours. These days with my 9-5 though, I’m usually exercising in the late evening. People ask me if it keeps me up, but it doesn’t. It actually helps me to sleep better!

  • Margaret October 1, 2013, 11:45 am

I’m an evening exerciser. No way I could exercise in the morning – I move so slowly when I first wake up!

  • Andrea B. October 1, 2013, 11:48 am

I prefer to work out in the morning. It means my workout is done for the day (and no excuses in the evening when I just want to go to bed).

  • Ksenija @ Health Ninja October 1, 2013, 11:55 am

How cool! I heard that he is working on the book and I’ve been curious about it ever since. It would be a blast to win this. I am a morning person through and through. Getting up, right into my running shoes, sipping a coffee while getting my stuff together and out on the street I am. Those first sleepy meters are the best if you ask me and I love to wake up this way. Meditating, thinking what the day will bring and what I can do to make it beautiful. Bliss.

  • Michelle @ SFTS October 1, 2013, 12:00 pm

The only time I’m motivated to work out is the morning. If I miss the alarm clock, forget about it!

  • jen October 1, 2013, 12:02 pm

Mornings…if I don’t get it done first thing, it’s not happening!!

  • Emily October 1, 2013, 12:02 pm

There is no better way to start the day than with a run, but that seldom happens for me. After school in the afternoons is the way I go.

  • Carrie October 1, 2013, 12:03 pm

I’m less likely to work out at all if I don’t do it first thing in the morning. I do, however, really enjoy a sunset run or bedtime yoga session!

  • Lisa October 1, 2013, 12:04 pm

I take workouts when I can! Sometimes it a run in the morning and then a quick weight training session after dinner!

  • Joey October 1, 2013, 12:15 pm

I prefer to work out in the morning but most days I’m too lazy so I end up doing it in the evenings. I have been trying to be more active on my lunch break too but I hate getting sweaty & then having to go back to work/meetings … I would love a copy of hos book. Whenever I try to cut out animal protein I end up eating a lot of JUNK!

  • Haley October 1, 2013, 12:19 pm

I have recently become a morning runner! I used to start work at 7… With an hour commute… Ugh! Now I start at 8, with a 15 min commute… So getting up before work is so manageable now!

  • Amanda October 1, 2013, 12:31 pm

I’m a morning exerciser. I have no willpower to go after work!

  • Ella October 1, 2013, 12:31 pm

I LOVE running in the morning but I don’t feel comfortable running alone now that it’s still dark at 6AM, so I’m an after-work-worker-outer. 😉

  • Charissa October 1, 2013, 12:34 pm

Morning! I travel a lot for work and if I don’t work out first thing in the morning it does not get done.

  • Vivian October 1, 2013, 12:43 pm

Early evenings before dinner. I have more energy since I’ve eaten most of my calories for the day already and I tend to make better dinner choices after.

  • Megan B. October 1, 2013, 12:49 pm

I typically work out in the morning – that way I can be sure to actually get the workout in. There are rarely really good excuses to skip a morning workout. Plus I like the quietness and peacefulness of the morning. When I can make it work with my work schedule though, I love running in the middle of the afternoon, around 2pm, to give me that final boost to make it through the day.

  • Ellen October 1, 2013, 12:50 pm

I love the feeling of getting my workout taken care of early in the morning, but I am just so not a morning person. 90% of my exercise happens in the after work pre-dinner period.

  • Ellen @ Wannabe Health Nut October 1, 2013, 12:54 pm

Great giveaway! I am a morning exerciser, which is why I hate the season change because it stays darker longer and I can’t head out on 6am runs before work anymore. (I live in NYC and don’t feel safe that early when it’s dark!) So, I’ve had to get creative with HIIT body weight workouts (thank you, Instagram) on my rooftop, and I do most of my running on the weekend. I’m not complaining about the temps though – it is perfect running weather right now!

  • Laura October 1, 2013, 12:55 pm

I’m a morning gal! If I’m not at the Y by 6:00 a.m., my workout gets pushed down on the priority list come end of day (family, pets, etc.). I’ve recently started reading NMA — LOVE it — can’t wait to read the book!

  • Whitney October 1, 2013, 1:03 pm

I am a morning workout lady!! While it is quite the task to role out of bed at 5am, I love the fact that I am done with exercise before I even start the day, PLUS it really helps deal with that 3pm slump while I am at work.

In full disclosure, though, I do get in some exercise a couple of nights a week when I teach BarreAmped!

  • Ingunn October 1, 2013, 1:06 pm

I prefer evening, but then I run the risk of bailing…so lunchtime it is!

  • Katie October 1, 2013, 1:10 pm

Without a doubt, bedtime baller. (Funny, my auto correct tried to make it bedtime ballerina.)

  • Mari October 1, 2013, 1:11 pm

I hate waking up early, but I LOVE working out fort thing in the morning! It wakes me up and gives me energy throughout the day.

  • Susanna October 1, 2013, 1:16 pm

AM exerciser if I have my way. I teach Spinning at 5 AM twice a week, but I sometimes teach in the evenings. However, I always prefer to get my workout done early morning and enjoy the high the rest of the day.

  • Lauren October 1, 2013, 1:24 pm

I’m not a morning person so I just can’t get it done before work! I prefer mid-day (which allows me to sleep in, eat, lounge, then workout) but it usually end up being in the evening except on weekends.

  • stacey October 1, 2013, 1:25 pm

on work days it is after work but on days off it is afternoon. not a morning person at all.

  • Maria October 1, 2013, 1:27 pm

Always morning or it would never happen!!

  • Emily @ The Swallow Flies October 1, 2013, 1:27 pm

I HAVE to workout early (5 a.m.) since I make every excuse NOT to later in the day. Once I get into the routine, it’s actually not THAT bad — and it really makes me enjoy “sleeping in” (i.e. 7 a.m. or so) a whole lot more!

  • Mina October 1, 2013, 1:33 pm

Morning! During the week I lace up my running shoes at 5am. Best way to start the day!

    Mina

  • LizW October 1, 2013, 1:33 pm

    LOVE NMA!
Getting up at 5a is super hard, but once I’m up, I love to get my run out of the way. Sometimes I wait until evening, but always before dinner. Urp.

    🙂

  • Kelsey October 1, 2013, 1:44 pm

Lunch time! My employer gives us an extra 20 minutes at lunch if we use our gym or go outside to exercise, which is awesome! I love that it’s not first thing in the morning when I haven’t eaten, gone to the bathroom, and am still half asleep. I also love that I get it over with before I go home at night.

  • Alexandra October 1, 2013, 1:46 pm

My favorite time to exercise is definitely first thing in the morning before my brain figures out what its doing haha This book looks great! THanks Caitlin!

  • Sarah @climbinvegan October 1, 2013, 1:47 pm

I try to exercise in the morning! it doesn’t always work 🙁

  • Caroline October 1, 2013, 1:51 pm

Morning, morning, morning!!! I consider morning exercise my “me time” and that motivates me to get up. I promise y’all…morning exercise is WORTH getting out of bed for! It will give you much needed solitude.

  • ErikaMC October 1, 2013, 1:56 pm

Morning! I love having it done with for the day and that way if something comes up later I won’t miss out!

  • Tricia October 1, 2013, 2:09 pm

Morning! Although it hasn’t happened a lot lately. With 2 kindergartners and a full-time job, I’ve had to try to sneak it in more informally during the day with a lunchtime walk or some exercises done here or there. Really need to try to drag myself up in the mornings. I miss that time.

  • Nicole October 1, 2013, 2:23 pm

I’m either mid morning or early afternoon. I’m so not an early morning person and if I wait too long I decide I’m too tired from a day of toddler wrangling! Gotta find the sweet spot!

  • Sydney @ Trust the Skinny Cook October 1, 2013, 2:31 pm

Morning! If I put it off then something always seems to get in the way of my workouts. I also can’t stand exercising on a full stomach so morning is easiest. Can’t wait to read the book!

  • Whitney @ Pancakes and Tulips October 1, 2013, 2:36 pm

I am definitely an AM exerciser. If I wait until after 9am my workout just doesn’t happen. I loose more and more motivation as the day goes on.

  • Mai October 1, 2013, 2:37 pm

i would love to be a morning exerciser but my work commute doesn’t really allow for it most of the time!

  • Megan @ The Lyons' Share October 1, 2013, 2:52 pm

I’m an early morning exerciser out of necessity, but I prefer mid-morning after breakfast digests!

  • Molly October 1, 2013, 3:01 pm

I am like you–used to be an early riser but having babies has made me really cherish my sleep! Now, I just try to fit them in wherever I can. I still prefer morning (around 9am) but I can also be found exercising after baby bedtime as well!

  • Ja @Ja on the RUN October 1, 2013, 3:02 pm

Wow! Awesome job for waking up early! I need to start waking up early too. But this girl is too afraid of the dark!

  • Allie October 1, 2013, 3:06 pm

Night time is the best. The temp is cool, and I always sleep so well after a good evening workout.

  • Kate October 1, 2013, 3:06 pm

Bedtime baller! Lately I’ve been closing the pool.

  • Tasha October 1, 2013, 3:27 pm

Mornings if I can manage them, it feels so good to have my workout done for the day and it starts my day off on the right foot!

  • Jennifer October 1, 2013, 3:31 pm

I am definitely a morning person! If workouts don’t happen for me in the mornings, I have a hard time making them happen. The only drawback is that I am still up by 6 on my rest days. I wish my body would tune into the “rest day memo” 🙂

  • Lindsey Gail October 1, 2013, 3:34 pm

I tend to find myself running later at night, even as late as 9 p.m. , particularly as someone who works 2nd shifts or overnights. I am really getting good use out of my headlamp!

  • Rebecca @ Strength and Sunshine October 1, 2013, 4:19 pm

I always wake-up and do core work right when I jump out of bed. But my normal workout (lifting) I do later in the day when I feel more powerful!

  • Lorne Reid October 1, 2013, 4:36 pm

As a no-meat athlete myself, I am eager to read the book and see where it varies from my own diet.

  • Bree October 1, 2013, 4:51 pm

Both late morning and early evening. Mostly because of my schedule – I like to exercise first thing in the day!
    jitterbug1 (at) gmail (dot) com

  • Melissa October 1, 2013, 4:54 pm

I’d really like to be a morning runner but I don’t get there often. Mostly lunchtime and evenings for me. Often I’m a 3 shower a day girl if I do a Cross Fit workout too. 🙂

  • Heather C October 1, 2013, 5:06 pm

I’m a right after work exerciser. I leave work frustrated but can enjoy a relaxing evening after I’ve sweated out all the stress

  • lindaajanssen October 1, 2013, 5:07 pm

None of the above, I’m what you’d call a ‘bruncher’. My preferred time to exercise is between 10 am and noon. Thankfully I work at home and can usually arrange my schedule to get away for an exercise break. And boy would I love to win a copy because I’m trying to lean toward more vegetarian/less meat and less exerciser/more true athlete!

  • MaryBeth October 1, 2013, 5:19 pm

I prefer morning. I love getting my workout done and feel great for the rest of the day!

  • jen October 1, 2013, 5:19 pm

morning forever!!…well until I had my beautiful daughter 7 weeks ago. just started back into my old routine last week and now I workout whenever I can get it in. but I cant wait to get back into the morning!

  • Wendy October 1, 2013, 5:21 pm

I hate dragging myself out of bed in the morning, but I love morning workouts. I love getting my workout done before I even know what happened and I love feeling accomplished right off the bat.

  • Sara October 1, 2013, 5:28 pm

Well pre kids I was a morning exerciser.. Now it’s beat the nap or bedtime baller exerciser.

  • dominique October 1, 2013, 5:33 pm

between grad school and a 15 month old, i will exercise whenever i can work it in. in the couple of weeks, i’ve been doing quick runs in between classes while the baby is in day care.

  • Heather October 1, 2013, 5:36 pm

If I don’t work out in the morning, I won’t work out at all! Love getting it in first thing to start my day right.

  • Rachel October 1, 2013, 5:36 pm

I prefer morning workouts but as a new mama to twins, evening workouts have been a more via able option lately.

  • Karen October 1, 2013, 5:45 pm

Morning (with a few lunch running groups sprinkled in). If it doesn’t happen before I get home from work it doesn’t happen 🙂

  • Caroline October 1, 2013, 6:00 pm

I teach pilates 2 mornings a week, so I’ve become more and more of an early riser and early work out girl.

  • Kierstan October 1, 2013, 6:02 pm

Thanks to my flexible job, I can workout whenever the mood strikes. Although I do love a morning workout, but lately have been finding it hard to get up and do it.

  • Trisha October 1, 2013, 6:03 pm

Definitely evening exercise time! I can never kick myself out of bed earlier enough in the morning.

  • Leah October 1, 2013, 6:05 pm

Morning! I like to go right away and enjoy pancakes afterwards.

  • Kim October 1, 2013, 6:09 pm

Morning is best, but I have a hard time getting up super early to do it (esp because I need to eat a little beforehand), so late afternoon on the weekdays, and morning on the weekends is how it usually works out.

  • Tina October 1, 2013, 6:19 pm

I love to exercise in the morning but since my husband and I run a coffee shop/deli no more morning workouts for me. 🙁 We got a dog this summer and he needs to take lots of walks since we live in an apartment, so now we exercise in the late afternoon or evening–that is, except on weekends when our shop is closed and we can walk, run, or bike in the morning.

  • Kayla October 1, 2013, 6:26 pm

I never used to be an exercise person at all. Almost two years ago now you came to my university and delivered a lecture that I will never forget. I made the decision that night to start eating healthier and get my work out on. Now, I am a morning runner for sure. I know if I get up and do it I will feel better all day long and not have to worry about it later on. Just this past Sunday I completed my first 5k. I know it’s just over 3 miles, but its a start :). Your blog is truly inspirational.

  • Liz October 1, 2013, 7:00 pm

Definitely an afternoon runner. I’m coaching cross country currently, so I take my gym bag to school, change when my girls change, and go squeeze in my workout with them.

  • Ginger October 1, 2013, 7:15 pm

Morning exerciser. I love getting up early to run now, when my children were young and I was a little sleep deprived, not so much 🙂

  • Joyce October 1, 2013, 7:15 pm

I am a newbie exerciser- so I’m doing a bit of exercise in he morning and a bit in the evening!

  • Annie October 1, 2013, 7:25 pm

I wish I could be an AM exerciser! It’s just too hard to get out of bed when it’s still dark out and raining and cold (I just moved to the Pacific NW). Evenings work for me!

  • Cecilia @MommiesRun October 1, 2013, 7:34 pm

I love my morning runs, if only I could drag myself out of bed to get them done!

  • Sarah October 1, 2013, 7:35 pm

Morning work out fiend for sure! It’s not always easy (especially now with an 8 week old baby :)) but even with less sleep I always feel better getting my sweat on in the AM. My day feels like it’s jump started with a clear head when it’s started with a workout 🙂

  • Nicole G October 1, 2013, 7:36 pm

Definitely a morning exerciser – it’s the best way to start the day =)

  • Robin October 1, 2013, 7:39 pm

Super early in the morning is my time!

  • Chantal October 1, 2013, 7:43 pm

Mornings! I used to be a late-afternoon person (4pm would be ideal, but not so much for working…) and never thought I could do mornings, but now I love them.

  • Pam October 1, 2013, 7:46 pm

That “click through to enter” note was confusing — I kept clicking the picture. Weird!

Anyway, read down, and I’m a morning person. That way, no other stuff can get in the way! (I see that’s the case for lots of people). Plus, I luckily have a habit of waking with the sun, so I have a good amount of time before work (until winter) to get up and go.

  • Colleen October 1, 2013, 8:05 pm

    I love morning workers!

  • Marlaina October 1, 2013, 8:23 pm

Afternooner! Right after getting home from work, before dinner time. Although I’d love to be a morning exerciser to save time later in the day I’m not quite there yet!

  • Anna {Herbivore Triathlete} October 1, 2013, 8:36 pm

I definitely prefer to exercise in the mornings but right after work (early evening) is typically when I get the time to go. I don’t like late nights at all! I went to spin class at 8pm one night and could NOT sleep afterwards at all.

I am super excited for Matt’s book, I love NMA!

  • Katherine October 1, 2013, 8:37 pm

    Mornings!
Sometimes I think it’s nuts that by 8:30 I have run 10 miles, showered, gotten my toddler up, him fed/ dressed/ to daycare, then to work, then in court ! It’s CRAZYness! 😛

  • Emily W. October 1, 2013, 8:50 pm

I am a morning exerciser all the way. I am usually out the door before 6:30am, pounding the pavement. On the weekends, I feel cranky and sluggish if I don’t get my long run started before 9:30-10am–exercising in the evening seems so impossible, I’ve never even tried!

  • Wendy B. October 1, 2013, 8:50 pm

It’s morning for me. Otherwise, as the day goes on other things come up, I keep finding more reasons not to go to the gym. So rise and shine it is.

  • Julia October 1, 2013, 8:56 pm

Bedtime baller! Though it would be more convenient to be a morning exerciser.

  • Katie M October 1, 2013, 9:12 pm

I am a morning exerciser. Get up, get it done, and then the rest of the day is open for whatever!

  • Shanleigh October 1, 2013, 9:40 pm

I love to work out late at night, when I get my second wind. Summer night runs are my favorite!

  • tara October 1, 2013, 9:45 pm

I am an early riser – I love having my workout done before I head to a crazy day at work…. by the way, have you seen the youtube video “rise and shine”???? It’ll get you out of bed for sure!

  • Cecily October 1, 2013, 9:54 pm

I’m more of a post-supper sweater. I love going to the gym after I’ve had a good meal and given it time to digest. Luckily, I live only steps from my college’s rec center!

  • cori October 1, 2013, 10:12 pm

    Totally morning. Whether it’s 4am or 9am.

  • Anna October 1, 2013, 10:20 pm

Definitely a morning workout person! I love not having to ‘think’ about working out, but just roll out of bed and do it. Its a great way to start the day!

  • Autumn October 1, 2013, 10:22 pm

I am definitely a morning person. Not too early though. I am not a mom…yet so I enjoy a nice 8-9am workout time.

  • Mia October 1, 2013, 10:28 pm

I don’t have a consistent work schedule, so i’m a revolves around my schedule exerciser i guess. In the winter my preferred time is around 4 cause it’s usually warmest then. In the summer my perfumed time is as early as possibly because i live way far south.

  • Luv What You Do October 1, 2013, 10:58 pm

I am an AM workout girl for sure!!!
How cool that Matt has a book!

  • Melissa October 1, 2013, 11:49 pm

I have to do it first thing in the morning, otherwise I’ll keep procrastinating and never get my workout done.

  • Stephanie October 1, 2013, 11:49 pm

I am a big fan of NMA- Matt is such an inspiration! I’m mostly a 5pm runner… it just seems to always work best for me and my motivation.

  • Shaun October 2, 2013, 12:18 am

In my perfect world. I run at 10 am. This is enough time to sleep in, but my run does not impede too much on my day…but that is in my perfect world. In reality, I run when I can, sometimes morning sometimes night, but I make sure that I do run.

  • Jessi Peterson October 2, 2013, 12:33 am

Morning! Perfect way to start the day and half the time I am so tired after work it doesn’t get done!

  • Kiki October 2, 2013, 2:01 am

    Mid morning for me!

  • Anjali October 2, 2013, 2:24 am

I have no choice but to workout in the mornings but I’d much rather exercise in the afternoon!

  • Joy October 2, 2013, 3:16 am

I’m a morning runner – waking up now for my long run of the week which will start at 4

But an evening other exerciser (I take the 5:30 classes at my gym)

  • tiffany October 2, 2013, 4:58 am

i can wake up early, but i can’t get out the door to work out! i like running in the evening before a late dinner, though this sometimes results in me racing the sunset.

  • Melissa October 2, 2013, 6:23 am

I love morning workouts, but they only fit in during the summer– I teach and am up at 5:45 to get to school on time.

I’m usually out there pounding the pavement by 4:30 or 5…PM!

  • Kathy K October 2, 2013, 7:04 am

I love to exercise in the morning! The trick though is to get to bed early the night before, and that doesn’t always happen.

  • Bethany October 2, 2013, 8:58 am

I am a bedtime baller for sure! I need to exercise at night to de-stress from the day otherwise all of the things I ‘need’ to do or remember creep into my head and I can’t sleep. Running clears that out for me and it’s amazing.

  • Katie October 2, 2013, 9:40 am

Morning! I like to sweat before I’m alert enough to talk myself out of it.

  • Katie October 2, 2013, 9:45 am

I actually used to workout mid-morning, but now I’m more of an early evening girl. It’s just when I can find the time!

  • Monica October 2, 2013, 10:45 am

Morning! I always get it out of the way before class, or else it doesn’t usually happen

  • Ashlee October 2, 2013, 10:47 am

I don’t like mornings, but I know I am much more productive in the mornings, so I always work out first thing in the morning – usually at an awful, early time.

  • Ashley October 2, 2013, 11:26 am

I am definitely a morning exerciser! I need to get it out of the way before I have the whole day to talk myself out of it! Would love this book! I tried going vegetarian last summer, but I ended up throwing in the towel because I didn’t have enough resources to figure out how to fuel without overeating carbs.

  • Pam October 2, 2013, 11:33 am

I’m an after work, jump right into workout clothes, and out the door kind of girl!

  • Stephanie October 2, 2013, 12:06 pm

I am an anytime workout person! Whenever it bests fits with my schedule. Usually it’s not midday though because of work and not wanting to stink up the office.

  • Megan October 2, 2013, 12:42 pm

Not a vegetarian and really don’t see that happening ever (my husband is a hunter and we eat what he hunts and I don’t see him quitting hunting, ever) but would still be interested to read this book and have several friends that would love it, as they are vegetarians.

  • Megan October 2, 2013, 12:44 pm

    …and I didn’t read the question prompt. 🙂

I rarely am a morning workout person. I work night shift, so if I do run in the morning it’s really about 7-8pm to my body. I prefer between 11am-3pm.

  • Bonnie October 2, 2013, 12:44 pm

This looks great! (thank you!) I am a “whenever” exerciser. As a personal trainer, there are times when a client cancels that I squeeze my workout in, or I get it done if I go in early. I’m never an evening exerciser though – it just won’t happen after a day of work. 😉

  • Shannon October 2, 2013, 1:11 pm

Strangely, I’ve been all over the map in my running life–everything but early a.m. has been my “sweet spot” at one time or another! But never, ever, 6 a.m. or earlier. Just no.

  • Karen @ Runner Girl Eats October 2, 2013, 1:16 pm

I prefer mornings but usually end up as an evening sweater. One day I will hopefully have a more morning friendly schedule.

  • Julie October 2, 2013, 1:25 pm

During the week I typically work out in the evenings for convenience sake (& because that’s when the classes I love are offered), but if I have a day off or on the weekends, I generally like to get it over w/ 1st thing in the morning. Plus it’s a great way to start the day!

  • Erica October 2, 2013, 1:40 pm

Cool book! I hope I win! I am definitely a morning exerciser. If I don’t get to it before three kids and a hubby get going in the morning, it’s probably not going to happen!

  • Alicia October 2, 2013, 2:03 pm

    I’m definitely a morning exerciser!

  • Mary October 2, 2013, 2:38 pm

Pre-baby, morning. Now with toddler…mostly weekends! Trying to get more focused to tackle the evening workouts after his bedtime…

  • Stefanie K October 2, 2013, 5:15 pm

Morning! love going out for runs in the morning to be energized for the rest of the day.

  • Alexandra October 2, 2013, 6:11 pm

I’m a morning exerciser 🙂 its the best way to wake me up for a full day

  • Sorayya October 2, 2013, 6:14 pm

I love to use it as an afternoon pick-me-up 🙂

  • Coco October 2, 2013, 6:27 pm

Definitely can’t work out until after my work day is done! haha

  • Erin October 2, 2013, 6:56 pm

Im a morning exerciser! Love getting it done with right as the day starts!

  • Kelly Braund October 2, 2013, 7:08 pm

    I prefer morning for sure!

  • Heather October 2, 2013, 7:52 pm

i definitely prefer morning! i really feel a lot better when i do it then. i have zero energy in the late afternoon and night time riles me up too much 🙂

  • Lindsey October 2, 2013, 8:13 pm

    I’m a bedtime baller!

  • Jolene (Homespun Heritage) October 2, 2013, 8:59 pm

I have 7 kids….I take my workouts when I can get them.

Definitely morning. I like getting it done, I feel more focused and “ready” for the day.

First thing in the morning all the way!!!! I feel like it sets me up with appositive start to my day. Plus it makes me feel awesome that I’ve already accomplished something great so early on in the day !!!

Oh, afternoon workouts for sure if I can swing it. When I was in law school, my only option was to go early at 530am and get it done before school but it was miserable and I still shudder when I think of it!

I’m definitely a first thing in the morning runner! My running group meets twice a week before morning yoga and we hit the road at 5 am, those are my favorite days of the week!

Never! 😉 Just kidding….I feel the best when I get up and workout in the morning. However, to say I am NOT a morning person is an understatement. I keep looking for that magic pill to make me a morning person, but can never seem to find it. Any tips?!

Thanks to you and Matt for the giveaway!! What a great book. Congrats to him (on the book) and you (for all your hard tri training). Go get it!!

I’m definitely a morning person! I like to workout in the quiet stillness before most people are awake. No matter how the rest of my day goes, I’ve already had at least one accomplishment!

I love morning exercise, though have had to transition to evening workouts due to my schedule. It’s a tough transition!

I’m a morning person — as long as it’s light out! In the winter, I sometimes switch to evenings since the dark, freezing Boston mornings make it hard to get out of bed :).

Morning! Even if it’s (sorta) dark. Because then I *all day* to feel my yummy exercise endorphins, and I don’t spend *all day* dreading working out. That said, I’ve recently done a few sunset runs that were so so so lovely….

I am an afternoon exerciser. I work in the bar industry so that is close to my morning though.

I love working out in the morning. It leaves me feeling so energized for the day! That is… if I don’t hit my alarm too many times.

I try and try to wake up in the morning to go for a run before work, but I roll over and my brain goes, “You could sleep for another HOUR what are you THINKING go back to sleep.” But I’ve always wanted to be more dedicated to running. I signed up for my first half marathon in March and I’m hoping that my dedication meter will just jump right up!
