As much time on the outside as on the inside – a huge milestone!

IMG_5426

Things are going so well over here.  Henry seems more and more like a boy and less like a baby every single day. When our friends come over, that’s the first thing they say – “He seems so much older!”  I think this is because he’s doing lots of big boy things now, like taking unassisted steps (his max is 14,  but most of the time, it’s more like 5) and talking. So much talking!

How can this be?! He’s changed so much. In fact, there are so many changes that I’m just going to do this post in bullet point format.

  • Henry talks all the time now.  His favorite sounds are Da Da, but he can say one real word: DOGH!  Or dog.  He says it to the dogs and to the cat.  We’re working on cat.

  • He eats three square meals now.  His favorite foods include tofu, beans, eggs, blueberries, lentils, steamed greens, and packets of carrots.

  • He sleeps from 7:30 to 6, but I think he’s going through a sleep regression right now.  It’s been rough.  I’ve also been loose on my sleep training methods and think I need to go back and get strict again.  Give that baby an inch and he takes a mile. He takes two naps.  I think he dropped the third too soon and that’s why his nighttime are messed up.

  • He hangs out at childcare about three times a week while I work out.  He loves the ladies and other babies.  We go to mom’s group once a week.  His favorite places include the museum and the park.  He LOVES being outside (I do, too!).  He goes for a walk in the stroller every day.

  • He’s 17.8 pounds and 28.5 inches long.  He has two teeth that are so cute.  I need to start brushing them but the idea terrifies me.  If you ever met Henry in real life, you would understand why!

  • He can point and is beginning to wave.  He brings me toys to ‘show me’ his prizes.  His favorite toys are balls of all sizes.  He likes to chuck them over the second floor landing (who taught him to do that?!).

  • He also loves BUBBLES.  I have to blow bubbles non-stop or he starts screaming the moment I stop.  It’s so funny – he’s so demanding.

  • Our favorite time of the day is the morning after his first longer nap.  He is so happy and fun.

  • He is generally a well-rounded, happy, friendly baby. He is hardly ever scared or upset, although he does get clingy in the evenings.  That’s okay with me though – he seems so independent during the day that it’s nice to be reminded that he still needs me.  I love him so much!

Oh, and a brief me update (although you guys pretty much already now this!):  Fitness is going really well.  I’m working out 4 – 5 times a week for Ironman March, doing a variety of swimming, running, biking. I am SO excited for triathlon season and can’t wait to give it my all.

Life is good. I am thankful every single day.

You both look so beautiful and happy! Even though I am years away from being ready for children, I love to read these honest posts about motherhood. Thank you for sharing your experiences!

Such a sweet post 🙂 You are an amazing mama! And he is such an adorable baby boy!! You both look so happy 🙂 And in regards to your last post, you out of all people, should not feel guilty. You make so many people feel “not guilty” for so much. I always loved that you were so real… Thanks to you, I felt better about being a runner and not feeling guilty about walking. Because although you race and try to make PRs, youre always honest about how running can be tough for even you, and how you also enjoy walking breaks. You make people feel better on a daily basis. You should feel good too! xoxo

  • Eli's Mom March 19, 2013, 12:24 pm

Both baby and mommy look great! Anyway, I read the sleep regression part — my little one had that, too and from my July 2012 mama board, somebody suggested putting coconut oil on his last solid meal for the day. That was hard for us since we are doing BLW so I had to change that and let him eat pureed meals at night with coconut oil. It worked for us. He’s now sleeping from 7:00PM to 6:30AM (sometimes 6) almost everyday. The reasoning behind the coconut oil — they said is to add fats into system (since they are more active now) which help them last longer in between feedings. It’s worth a try for Henry, right? 🙂

    • Caitlin March 20, 2013, 9:10 am

      I will try this!

  • Kaitlin @4loveofcarrots March 19, 2013, 12:32 pm

oh my gosh he is soo darn cute!!! He has the prettiest eyes!

  • Carolina John March 19, 2013, 12:36 pm

First I have to say…. wow. you weren’t kidding about those 4 extra cup sizes yesterday.

How cool. 9 months is a milestone age for sure. it’s huge! Walking and teething open up a whole new world for him. It’s really amazing to observe the transformation from baby to toddler.

    You’re still beautiful too.

  • Tara March 19, 2013, 1:06 pm

Wow, can’t believe he has gotten so big in 9 months! What a cutie!

  • Jessica March 19, 2013, 1:09 pm

Would you go into more detail about how you’ve been lenient about your sleep training methods and how you handle a regression without messing it up? My son is a month behind yours and we sleep trained at 7 months. He is also on two good naps and sleeps 12 hours at night. Very occasionally he will wake up to eat and will sometimes wake up for a few mins whining, but then goes back to sleep.

    • Caitlin March 20, 2013, 9:11 am

I don’t allow night eating until normal circumstances. I think this is where you can get into trouble if you have sleep trained – this is what happened to use. I let him have a few nighttime bottles and then it just all unraveled. So we went back to the sleep training methods that I outlined in the previous post.

One tip on the toothbrushing front that I learned with my little ones – starting when they are newborns, rub their gums every night with a soft washcloth, even if it’s only for a few seconds. This gets them used to having something in their mouth and on their gums (and eventual teeth).

  • Rachel March 19, 2013, 1:38 pm

Henry is such a cutie! I love how you two coordinated your outfits 😉 Hot parenting tip: Stock up on the bubbles. The love & fascination with bubbles continues well into the toddler & preschool years!

  • Cindy March 19, 2013, 1:54 pm

You both look so happy! Henry is adorable! My nieces love(d) bubbles too. They used to go out in the backyard with my mum and play in the summer. 🙂

  • Alexa March 19, 2013, 2:41 pm

Are you using Dairy Free formula because of the dairy sensitivity he had while you were nursing that caused you to give it up? Just wondering for our own transition to formula in a few months.

    • Caitlin March 19, 2013, 2:57 pm

      yup.

  • Katie @ Live Half Full March 19, 2013, 2:55 pm

  • Cori March 19, 2013, 3:18 pm

My twins loved bubbles so much at that age that I bought them a cheap bubble machine. It was so worth every penny to free my hands up so i could take pictures and videos of them loving their bubbles 🙂

  • Jessica R @ fromthekitchentotheroad March 19, 2013, 4:59 pm

Whatever happened to no photoshopping/photoediting? You can clearly see in the side-by-sides that the newer photos are quite edited! Higher contrast, etc. Your walls even look like different colors!

    • Caitlin March 20, 2013, 8:42 am

I don’t own photoshop 🙂 it’s just the time of day that images are taken with the light coming in on the windows on the front of my house.

  • Kaitlin March 20, 2013, 9:07 am

I literally just said “OMG, gorgeous” out loud while reading this post. You look absolutely BEAUTIFUL and so happy! What a lovely family y’all make 🙂

Not only is Henry one of the most adorable babies (err…little boys?! weird.) in the world, you look FABULOUS. Seriously. You make motherhood look good!!

  • Priyanka March 20, 2013, 10:11 am

Its hard to believe how much they change in nine months. Henry looks so happy!!

This is totally random- I had a dream last night that I ordered two novels from amazon that were written by you. I can even remember the cover page of one of the novels 🙂

  • Jacquelynn March 20, 2013, 10:43 am

    He is adorable!

Question: Do you have a post about your method for steaming greens? If not, how do you do it?

  • Debbie in WBL March 20, 2013, 1:30 pm

I’ma dental hygienist…take a wet washcloth, wrap it around your finger and gently wipe his gums and teeth. Good luck!

  • Kelly Schussler March 20, 2013, 1:55 pm

Oh my goodness I cannot believe he’s already taking unassisted steps!!! So young!

My little guy is a few days older and I swear he could if he wanted to but he won’t let go….of my pantleg/the table/my hand/his brother. I love this stage, it’s so fun to get to know them better.

  • Brittnie (A Joy Renewed) March 21, 2013, 11:07 am
