Random Run Thoughts

in Run Happy

Thought #1:  You know what I think the key to regular exercise is – no matter what your life and work situation?  When you have an opportunity to run, RUN.  Don’t dilly dally!  We all pack in so much; the window to workout is usually fairly short.  Stop wondering if you should go on a run… just go on a run!

Easier said than done, of course. Winking smile

Thought #2:  Are 10Ks totally not cool anymore?  Last night, I spent thirty minutes trying to find an upcoming 10K race in the Charlotte area.  They were few and far between (and all conflicted with my schedule).  10Ks used to be all the rage!  Now it’s all 5Ks and half marathons.  This lady would like something in between, please.

Thought #3:  Most of my runs now involve three things:  Henry in the jogging stroller, 3 – 3.5 miles, and a little bit of speedwork.  In fact, out of the last seven runs that I completed, almost all were under that format!  What can I say?  I like what I like.  My goal for tri season is to get FASTER, and my recent 2-hour half marathon proved to me that I can actually be ‘fast’ with a baby, so I’m werkin’ it.

Run, momma, run!

Thought #4:  Henry had a horrible night.  He is normally a great sleeper, so I try not to complain about the random bad nights, but he was a bit feverish and whiny – I think he’s teething again.  Yay, teeth!  Boo, pain!  I was planning to do a long run with him in the stroller but quickly tossed that idea out the idea at, say, 1:30 AM.

Thought #5:  Instead, I went out after putting Henry down for his first nap.  It was gray and drizzling when I left, and all I could think was how sorry I felt for the people participating in Charlotte’s 10-miler race this weekend.  Ugh!  I always get severe second-hand race sadz when it’s yucky out on a Saturday or Sunday.  Anyone else?  Or am I just crazy?!

Thought #6: The weather wasn’t great for the first half of my run but really got wet for the second half.  The cold and pounding rain definitely motivated me to SPRINT.  I ended up running 5.0 miles in about 47:00 – not too shabby for a sleepy momma!

I always feel like February can be a funny running month.  It’s usually cold and icky out, which can be de-motivating, but it’s often the start of many awesome training plans for the fun spring and summer.  A mixed bag!  But lately, for me, it’s been going really well.  I’m (somehow) fitting it in, working on my speed, and running on my own terms.  Three cheers for running!

How’s running going for you guys?

I love the photo of Henry sitting in the big chair! I ran 10 miles this morning! It was my longest run thus far and it feels so good to have it done. I’m still really slow but hope to be able to work on my speed at some point

  • Emily February 23, 2013, 11:50 am

Henry look like a little kid sitting in that chair, not a baby! Wow he’s getting so big.

I’m running the Pittsburgh Marathon Relay in May, so I should be running more often. But I’m hoping the weather will turn soon to motivate me to get out! I just can’t run when it’s below 20 degrees.

  • meredith February 23, 2013, 11:51 am

I actually got to run outside this morning for the first time in a while since it wasn’t raining, sleeting or snowing and was 36 degrees which felt warm for a change! I was so spoiled last winter when New York had one of the warmest, mildest winters on record. This year has been less than ideal for an outdoor runner…And I totally agree, everything seems to be a 5k or a half marathon. I hate 5ks, something in between would be nice on occasion!

  • Amanda February 23, 2013, 11:53 am

My running is picking up again. After a bitterly cold January and most of February I’ve been sucking it up and going to the gym a little more. But March isn’t far and after that…April! I live in buffalo,ny and by the time March hits we’re mentally sick of the cold. I really want to improve my 5K and 8K time this year : )

And yes I’m sure all the races are 5ks and half marys….what gives?

  • Katie @ Talk Less, Say More February 23, 2013, 12:10 pm

You know, I’ve had a hard time finding 10ks for March to fit in my 1/2 marathon training. I basically found two options – one in Chicago as the “shorter” option for a 1/2 marathon and one that was 2 hours away in Madison. The only 5k I could find in February was in Madison so I didn’t want to run the same basic route 2 months in a row, but if I’m not the only one having issues finding 10ks, then they must not be “cool” anymore. Bummer, I like ’em!

I’ve been running through the winter, and I must say this month as really gotten me down. I started training for a late-March 10K a few weeks ago, and this training has been the hardest running of the winter. Cold, windy, rainy and now SNOW. Too many treadmill runs. I’m ready for spring!

  • Caroline February 23, 2013, 12:24 pm

I wish there were more 10ks too- I’ve never had the opportunity to run one!

  • Holly February 23, 2013, 12:26 pm

Henry look so BIG in that picture. His legs are so long!! He is just so dang cute.

  • Jenn February 23, 2013, 12:40 pm

    Henry is such a cutie!

  • Julia February 23, 2013, 12:45 pm

Charlotte racefest is April 13. A group of us (most of us from Pitt!) are running the 10k.

    • Caitlin February 23, 2013, 2:46 pm

I know! I am going to miss this 🙁 Are there a group of PITT friends in Charlotte? When did you guys graduate?

  • Jessi @ doctorate housewife February 23, 2013, 12:54 pm

It’s been all treadmill for me. I’m such a wuss in the cold…

  • Katie February 23, 2013, 12:58 pm

I agree distances between 5ks and half marathons are hard to find! And feb is a weird running month i just finished my first long run (6 miles) for my marathon training plan and was over heating! It was weird, but nice to know it’s warming up!

  • Jelena February 23, 2013, 1:38 pm

    Hi Caitlin,
I am not sure if you had a post about it before, but I am curious what do you think about running in snow? I applied for 10k race in May, but since late November I am stucked with living room workouts, since we are covered in snow and the temperatures are in 30ies. Normally, winters are not strong where I live, but this one is an exception. I tried to run a couple of times when it was a bit warmer, but I ended up sick every time. I consider getting a gym membership, but considering my luck, the sun will start shining the day I sign 1 year contract at the gym. 🙂 Any tips?

    • Caitlin February 23, 2013, 2:46 pm

I don’t know exactly what brand to recommend but they have these grippers you can buy to put on your sneakers to protect you from slipping in the snow and ice!

    • Lara February 25, 2013, 3:57 pm

I live in Chicago which is pretty snowy and the temps can get below zero. I run outside year-round, I think you are probably getting sick from public transit and general germs that time of year. I like to use a trail running model if it’s particularly slippery.

  • Emilia February 23, 2013, 1:44 pm

I’m shocked you’re having a difficult time finding 10Ks! It seems like such an ideal length of race, a bigger deal than a 5k but not quite as intense as a half-marathon…strange, I hope you find one soon 🙂

Right now I’m not running, but itching to get back into it. I can’t wait until warmer weather comes and I’m reunited with my sneakers .

  • Katie H. February 23, 2013, 1:47 pm

Running is…. going. I’m training for my first full marathon, and while I love to run…. this is A LOT of running! I have to keep reminding myself that running is something I ENJOY and should feel blessed to get the chance to do this much of it 🙂

  • Chantal February 23, 2013, 2:02 pm

I looooove Henry’s onesie in the chair picture! And yes, he is getting huge!

  • miss pip kelly February 23, 2013, 2:15 pm

Lots of 10ks in England! I’ve never done one before but in my pursuit of #healthy2013 I’ve signed up for three – Surrey in June, Manchester in September and Newcastle in October! Never run more than 5k before so I’m excited/nervous! You’re a big inspiration!

  • Jen @ Little-Crumbs February 23, 2013, 2:46 pm

Hope Henry is feeling better soon! Look into an amber teeth necklace, my little guy wears his and so far no major issues! Can’t really say how great it works because he’s been wearing it for a while- I figure it doesn’t hurt.

  • Leanne February 23, 2013, 3:10 pm

I love hearing your stories about trying to fit it all in as an active, working mom. For some reason, this post really brightened my day, so thank you. Keep on truckin and smiling! You are a rock star momma!

  • Gail February 23, 2013, 5:47 pm

Caitlyn, not trying to be rude or mean- I’m genuinely worried about you. The dark circles under your eyes look just like the ones I was having and it turns out I have Hashimito’s hypothyroidism. Have you seen anyone? It’s really frightening to see you looking so ill. I hope everything is alright.

    • Caitlin February 23, 2013, 6:02 pm

I’m sorry you have Hashimoto’s! Funnily enough, that is the Husband’s specialty. Thanks for your concern, but I have had extensive blood work recently and do not have any thyroid conditions…. or any other significant health issues. My dark circles are just hereditary… sucks to hear that my natural appearance makes me look so ill! But I’ve had an olive tone and dark skin around my eyes my entire life – I think it’s my Italianishness. Compounding the issue is that I don’t wear makeup anymore so they are a little more obvious. Oh, and I have a baby so I generally don’t sleep as well or as often as I would like to. 🙂 GL with your thyroid condition. Hashimoto’s is a bitch.

      • Amber K February 23, 2013, 9:37 pm

I just have to say that this is the most well thought out, and genuinely nicest response to a comment ever. So many bloggers would freak out and be passive aggressively rude or just delete it all together. I’m so glad you know how to take the high road! No one seems to be able to distinguish between “haters” and actual concern or actual questions anymore.

  • Laura @ RunningJunkie February 23, 2013, 6:15 pm

My running is not going. Boo:-( I was supposed to be running the Rock N’ Roll Marathon on March 16 but I just got sidelined with a stress fracture. Oh well, next time.

When I do get back to running, I’m with you, I want a few 10ks!

  • Laura February 23, 2013, 6:40 pm

I’m training for the Nike Women’s Half marathon in DC in April and upping my mileage while trying to mix in some cross training to avoid injury!

  • Kirsten February 23, 2013, 7:59 pm

Thanks so much for this post! I am currently rocking my two month old to sleep. I have been really struggling with how to get my active lifestyle back now that I’m a mom. It just always seems like I should do something else (sleep, cook, ect.) instead of run. Hopefully, your post is the inspiration that I need. I’m hoping to at least be up for the fall race season here in charlotte. Fingers crossed that he’s sleeping more by then too!

  • Erin February 24, 2013, 12:25 am

Henry is really big in that last photo!

Running is a struggle these days. I failed to find a good way to stay fit while treating multiple injuries, and now I’m carrying a lot of extra weight, which makes running a horrible experience. Hoping to sort that out asap!

  • Sarah (The Simple Dietitian) February 24, 2013, 7:55 am

Running has been great! I’ll admit that I’ve had some scheduling difficulties lately, as I really like my morning runs but have had to plan several night runs which totally throws me off! But at least it has kept me in the groove and makes me LOVE my morning runs all the more. 😀

  • Jacquelynn February 24, 2013, 9:41 am

I’ve been trying to find 10k’s around my area too… they are usually walker-friendly (which I am looking for), but they are so hard to find!

  • Molly @ RDexposed February 24, 2013, 11:04 am

The weather is just part of the running magic. I ran 11 miles in 27* weather and snow and icy patches. It’s great!

  • Alex @ Raw Recovery February 24, 2013, 2:19 pm

I have one more run before I’m done with the C25k program and I’m making plans to run a half marathon this fall with one of my best friends. I know there’s a big difference between a 5k and a half, but I’m really motivated and actually love running now! I always wanted to be a runner and just never thought I “had it in me.” Well, you don’t become a runner by not running, so I went out and did it! The confidence I get from exercising motivates me to keep going. It has positively impacted every area of my life and helped me get rid of those last remaining remnants of depression that I’ve been struggling with for roughly 8 years. *happy*

  • Amanda February 24, 2013, 3:49 pm

I know what you mean! My area has one 10k in the spring and one in the fall. That’s it. It’s so frustrating because I love the 10k distance! It’s all 5ks and five-milers.

  • Jodie February 24, 2013, 9:18 pm

Not sure if you would consider Columbia, SC in the Charlotte area being an hour away, but there is an upcoming 10K for St. Patty’s Day Saturday, March 16th…it’s a fun day down there-and the race is stroller friendly! Would love to see you there! 🙂

    • Caitlin February 24, 2013, 10:06 pm

      Ooooooh!

  • Stephanie @ Food Fit 4 Real February 25, 2013, 3:56 pm

I had a race on Saturday that ended up being the COLDEST of my winter running season. It was 29 degrees when we arrived at the race at 6:00 AM and not much warmer when we started the 10K at 7:00 AM. I still managed to finish in under a hour, despite the knee issues I have been experiencing the past month.

  • Mikella February 25, 2013, 10:54 pm

Omg. Henry is such a little MAN now. If he had a beer and bag of chips in that chair with him, you could convince me that he is 25 years old and waiting for a football game to come on TV.
