You turn your back for long enough to fry some apples…

I think it’s time for more effective baby proofing.  The spatula is no longer a formidable match.

Speaking of those apples…

Yum.  Hello, gorgeous.

IMG_4676

On the stovetop:

1/2 cup oatmeal

1/2 cup water

1/2 cup soymilk

Chia seeds

Dash of cinnamon and nutmeg

To make the apples, I chopped up a Gala apple and threw the pieces in a hot pan with a little bit of coconut oil and brown sugar.  The key with perfectly fried apples is not to stir them too much – just often enough to flip and brown all the edges.

Eaten while someone else inhales what we lovingly refer to as ‘boobie mashed potatoes’ (AKA mashed potatoes made with breast milk).  If that gives you the shivers… heck, it kind of weirds me out, too.

Every time I make ‘em, I march the Tupperware around the house declaring, “Do NOT each these mashed potatoes.  These are Henry’s mashed potatoes, knowwhatImean?!”

Do you have a Burlington near you? They have some cabinet baby proofing supplies for $1.

I bought a Babies R US brand cabinet lock and my son broke it! So far he hasn’t been able to get past the Burlington $1 locks.

I always have breakfast envy after you post things like this! I need to remember to fry up some of the million apples I have at home tomorrow 🙂

Thanks for the laugh about “boobie mashed potatoes”!

We have spoons through all of our cabinet handles to deter our cats. But they figured out how to bat the spoon out of the handles. #SmartyCats

      Oops!

That’s a great quote! Great reminder for me today. Henry is too cute, so exciting to see him grow into a little person. 🙂

  • Lindsey February 5, 2013, 11:37 am

You did a post about what Henry’s eating, right? I think I remember…but maybe not? Can you link to it if you did one? I’m interested in the people food he’s eating because my son (only days younger than Henry) does really well with all types of pureed food I make him, but I want to introduce solids (mushy solids, that is).

  • Sarah @ Yogi in Action February 5, 2013, 11:38 am

Those are great pictures of him with the pots and pans. He looks so curious about all the things around him.

Also, with your new header- and the picture of Henry as a newborn, you can really see how he’s grown! He’s a little person now.

  • Lauren February 5, 2013, 11:39 am

LOVE that quote! Thanks for the reminder of that today. 🙂

    • Casey February 5, 2013, 8:21 pm

I love that quote too. Great idea on the “boobie mashed potatoes” as well!!

  • Paige @ Your Trainer Paige February 5, 2013, 11:48 am

Ha! That spatula’s no match for Henry! What a cutie 🙂 I remember loving to play with dishes and bowls when I was a kid, too.

  • Beks February 5, 2013, 11:51 am

Ha! You crack me up. Boobie Mashed Potatoes. Sneaking extra nutrition in with Henry’s veggie. Smart. 🙂

  • Carly @LifeInTraining February 5, 2013, 12:03 pm

“Boobie mashed potatoes” is the best thing I’ve read all day!

  • Michelle S February 5, 2013, 12:04 pm

My son had this great way of getting past anything that was “baby proof”. Around 6 or 7 months, I decided it was much easier to make a cabinet just for him. It had some of his toys in it and pots and pans and things that he could pull out without any danger and turn into a noise maker while I did the cooking.

  • Carolina John February 5, 2013, 12:26 pm

you know most people totally babyproof everything then you’re like 4 months pregnant. I can’t believe you are so far behind /sarcasm

actually that’s all a pain to install and he’ll show you exactly where you need to install stuff, so you’re in good company there.

Just laughed out loud to the mashed potatoes. Very creative!! I love your website, I’ve been reading back posts all morning:) I’m not a mom so I don’t think I can truly appreciate ALL you do but you seem like you balance everything so well. A great example for the kid-less ladies out there:)

  • Stellina @ My Yogurt Addiction.com February 5, 2013, 12:47 pm

Henry is adorable as ever! Love that quote, really need it today. I worry TOO much! How about a post on how to worry less??? Hmmm!

  • Beth @ Running with the Sunrise February 5, 2013, 12:56 pm

I never would have thought to mix sunflower seeds with my oatmeal, but that sounds like a combination that could work. Good luck baby proofing your kitchen!

  • Jacquelynn February 5, 2013, 12:58 pm

Love that quote at the end of this post… re-pinned it! 🙂

  • Beepieruns February 5, 2013, 12:59 pm

I always have one cupboard that is completely kid-friendly (think Tupperware and plastic bowls and cups) that way my kiddos can get into it and play to their heart’s content but they don’t get hurt. You end up with a mess, but you can also cook dinner so it works 🙂

  • Sana February 5, 2013, 1:48 pm

Oh god. Boobie mashed potatoes sound terrifying.

  • Claire February 5, 2013, 1:54 pm

The fried apples look delicious! I make baked apples with cinnamon all the time for my 13 month old, and I’m always stealing them from her to put on my oatmeal. 🙂

We really like these cabinet locks: http://www.amazon.com/Child-Safety-Cabinet-Latch-Color/dp/B005PWVIZE/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1360089919&sr=8-10&keywords=cabinet+locks

Also, I know this is such a minor thing, but I think that “boobie” is such an infantilizing, immature and frankly IMHO insulting term, especially in the context of breastfeeding. Especially after your recent (and awesome) post about the Generation Know project that you attended, and your talk about “breaking down barriers to education, busting myths, and encouraging women to be comfortable with their bodies.” I think giggling about “boobie mashed potatoes” really doesn’t help to normalize breastfeeding (and pumping) or to help women feel comfortable about their bodies. I know it may seem like I’m making a big deal about a small thing, but every small thing like this adds to and propagates the overwhelming societal paradigm that breasts are something to be laughed about, like middle school boys in the locker room. Just my two cents.

    • Irene February 6, 2013, 10:42 am

Calm down Claire, it will be ok! I breastfeed and I’m all about encouraging women to be comfortable with their bodies and see no issue with what she said unless you are some type of femanist.

      • Caitlin February 6, 2013, 12:27 pm

Whoooooa. I am ‘some type of feminist’ and seriously don’t think it’s a big deal to say boobie as a joke in regards to my kiddo’s breastmilk mashed potatoes. To each their own.

  • Kim February 5, 2013, 2:05 pm

    Too cute! Love that curiosity.

  • Sarah February 5, 2013, 2:16 pm

Boobie mashed potatoes, HAHAHA! Love it.

  • Katie @ Peace Love and Oats February 5, 2013, 2:24 pm

Hahahaha just wrap the mashed potatoes container with duct tape and write on it with red sharpie. Granted if I lived there I’d just avoid mashed potatoes completely, just in case.

  • Catherine February 5, 2013, 3:02 pm

There is no such thing as 100% “baby proofing.” I quickly learned that as soon as my baby got mobile. But it’s such a blast to watch them unleash their curiosity on the most seemingly boring objects. I got my daughter one of those oh-so-controversial (what isn’t?) walker thingies for Christmas. She loves it but whenever I’m cooking, she will wheel herself backwards and then zoom forward into my ankles. She’ll do it non-stop until I pick her up. It really hurts, but it’s hilarious!

  • Sara @ fitcupcaker February 5, 2013, 3:34 pm

i love warm cinnamon apples 🙂 Especially in oatmeal!

  • Katie @ Talk Less, Say More February 5, 2013, 10:36 pm

I think you should get some “caution” stickers for those mashed potatoes. No one will accidentally take them from the fridge…. 😉

  • Kylie @ immaeatthat February 6, 2013, 12:10 am

Hahahaha ‘boobie mashed potatoes’!! That is the funniest thing I’ve read all day:):)

  • Jessica February 6, 2013, 10:44 am

Oh MAN. I have boxes of notes from friends separated by year, from 7th grade until 12th grade. I can’t even begin to open them to go through them. I am sure they are hilarious. I can’t bring myself to throw them away.

I decided this year (New Years Resolution) to write in a handwritten journal type thing once a day, about my day. This would be very brief and would be remembrances, code words, etc. I knew this year was going to be exciting, so I wanted to be able to look back and reminisce. I’ve kept up so far!! (Some days I write twice to make up for days I didn’t.) So it’s kind of similar to your day planner. I don’t grade my days, though!

  • Sara February 6, 2013, 10:00 pm

    hehehe mashed pa-tatas

  • AmandaonMaui February 12, 2013, 2:54 am

My mom always tells me about how I would pull the pots and pans out of the cupboard to bang on when I was a baby. I guess nothing in the world changes!

    • AmandaonMaui February 12, 2013, 2:55 am

Well, some things do of course!
