Say It Ain’t Snow

Drumroll, please.  The award for most uncomfortable sleeping position ever goes to….

Henry.  My future yogini. Please excuse the creeper monitor pic.

How are you guys doing?  I’m alright – we’re having a very nice day at home.  However, late last night, I developed a mysterious and crazily painful ache in my hip.  Right before my race!  I’m taking it super easy and doing some light stretches.  I hope it goes away sooner rather than later – I have no idea what happened or why it’s bothering me.  It seemed to come out of nowhere.

This came out of nowhere, too…

Everyone in Charlotte is buzzing about the potential for snow tonight – we don’t get a lot of snow.  I’m excited for a bit of snow (I can handle – and even enjoy – a little bit) but am afraid it’s going to mess up my flight.  My half marathon is in Florida, and I leave early tomorrow morning.

Speaking of Florida…

Now, that I can deal with.  Perfect race weather!

You know what else I can deal with?  These cookies.

We are OBSESSED with these Immaculate Baking Company Gluten Free Fudge Brownie Cookies.  Oh my goodness.  So delicious.  Not only GF but also dairy free (they do contain eggs).

IMG_4258

We just break off how many we want at that moment and bake ‘em up.  The rest go back in the fridge for later.  They are a little crispy but super soft on the inside… Really, really good.

And for lunch – some leftovers.

So.  That’s my day.  A little of this, a little of that, a little bit of naptime acrobatics.  You know.  Same old, same old.

Those cookies look amazing!! YUM! And seriously, you’ve definitely got a future yogi on your hands!

  • Nikole January 17, 2013, 1:53 pm

Where do you get the cookies they look delicious? Also have you found any good gluten free bread? I removed wheat from my diet 4 months ago and this is the one thing I have found hard to give up. I like Wheat Fields Cinnamon chip gf bread for French toast but I really just want a sandwich!

    • Caitlin January 17, 2013, 1:56 pm

I like Udi’s a lot. I got those cookies at Whole Foods. Going GF really isn’t SO bad (when you eat at home) once you find staple replacements you like. GOOD LUCK.

      • Allie January 17, 2013, 2:09 pm

Hey Caitlin! Have you ever done a round-up of all your favorite GF products? I’d love to know!

        • Caitlin January 17, 2013, 2:09 pm

fun post idea! i shall do this soon!

    • Kathy January 17, 2013, 6:29 pm

They also sell those awesome cookies at Target!

    • Jen January 18, 2013, 6:08 am

      Country Life is really good!

Caitlin, I remember you saying your tummy went flatter after removing gluten (cause of your sensitivity). Did adding gluten free breads (carbs) cause it to go up again or still flat? Curious if its the carbs or the gluten that cause a pooch…

  • Heather January 17, 2013, 1:56 pm

It always seems like you get injured right before races! (Though maybe I’m just remembering it wrong?). Do you think it is just the wear and tear of training on your body?

    • Caitlin January 17, 2013, 1:57 pm

I KNOW RIGHT? I don’t know what the heck happened. I was fine after my run and then like, four hours later, my hip started to ache. I don’t get injured before most races (I mean, I’ve done like 45 or something and only have gotten a handful of injuries) but when I do, they do seem to pop up right at the end. I guess that makes sense. Maybe it’s psychological though? Hopefully this tweak will go away STAT.

      • Hannah January 17, 2013, 6:01 pm

didn’t you say your last run had more hills than usual? Also…. it’s probably time for a new pair of shoes. Foam roll that baby out, hope it feels better.

      • Jen January 18, 2013, 6:09 am

Phantom injuries. Seriously – it’s super common to experience new aches and biggies right before a race. Don’t sweat it.

  • Lea January 17, 2013, 2:04 pm

egads! I feel for you. I won’t even mention the weather here in Southern California apart to say I am wearing shorts. Of course, because I am in Southern California means that we are enjoying said weather from a tiny town home where all 4 of us cram in like sardines. So its a trade-off eh?

  • Lindsay January 17, 2013, 2:25 pm

Those two things could be related – your hip pain and the snow. Maybe the change in barometric pressure is affecting your joint! Did you have an old hip injury?

  • Rachel January 17, 2013, 2:27 pm

That picture of Henry made me lol! Hope your hip feel better & snow doesn’t derail your flight 🙂 Sending positive vibes from the west coast to the east!

  • Chantal January 17, 2013, 2:35 pm

hahaha love that pic of Henry. Looks like he got tired of sitting up and just faceplanted.

  • alli January 17, 2013, 2:55 pm

omg! i’m at work and about laughed out loud at henry! too cute!
i hope your hip heals! you sure you didn’t sleep like henry, too 😉
mine started hurting me about 3 weeks ago after a long 15 mile long run. ran on it once more to do speedwork before i couldn’t stand it anymore! every time i put my foot down it hurt a little spot in my hip. stairs were horrible! been taking it easy, stretching, chiropractic visits and occasionally popping some ibuprofen (not a fan!!!) got some new shoes and inserts, too. it’s getting better but i hope its 100% before my 1st ever marathon on march 2!
prayers for both our hips! 😉

  • Courtney January 17, 2013, 2:58 pm

FYI, ‘Yogini’ is feminine. ‘Yogi’ is masculine. 😉

  • Sarah @ Yogi in Action January 17, 2013, 3:09 pm

haha Babies are the best at yoga- it’s almost like they don’t have any bones cause they’re so flexible!

Hope your hip starts feeling better. Maybe some accupuncture to help it out faster?

  • Lindsey January 17, 2013, 3:11 pm

Oh no! I don’t know if this will help, but I find that the aches and pains always come out when I taper. Maybe it’s a postive sign of healing and your body getting to those little tears. Sending healing vibes and runners good luck your way!

  • Helena January 17, 2013, 3:14 pm

The cookies look really good. :-)There’s a great range of gluten-free bakery products in New Zealand too; I actually use them even though I eat (plenty of) wheat. Their burger baps and pizza bases taste better to me than “normal” ones.

    Wondered if you’d seen this:

I hope your travel goes ahead safely!

  • Elisabeth January 17, 2013, 3:50 pm

Eh… Snow. I’ve lived in northwestern Ohio since birth (30 years ago), so I guess I should be used to it…but I hate it! I always say I’m moving south before next winter, but hasn’t happened yet. Maybe before next winter 😉

  • Noelle January 17, 2013, 4:04 pm

After you have a baby your body just spontaneously falls apart.

  • Jodi January 17, 2013, 4:14 pm

May sound strange but sleeping in a strange hotel bed will make my hip ache but I think it’s because I go from a king down to a hotel full size. Just a thought. Babies can sleep in the most awkward positions!

  • Kristen L January 17, 2013, 4:20 pm

Good luck on your travel and your race. I hope the hip pain goes away quickly.

By the way, that photo of Henry is hilarious!

  • Amy @ Extracurricular Activities January 17, 2013, 4:30 pm

Omg that pic is incredible! Babies are so freakin’ flexible. I’m jealous haha.

  • kristen @ livinlifeinlouie January 17, 2013, 4:49 pm

I hope the snow doesn’t mess with your flight! Good luck! (and man, I wish I lived in Florida)

  • Clare @ Fitting It All In January 17, 2013, 5:25 pm

YUMM!! We used to keep frozen otis spunkmeyer dough (NOT vegan) but mostly just ate it in dough form…rarely baked!

  • Jazz January 17, 2013, 6:21 pm

haha- don’t worry, if they cancelled flights because of snow, I would only travel 2 months of the year!

  • Katya January 17, 2013, 6:34 pm

LOL, love that photo of Henry 🙂 too funny.
good luck in your race, hope your hip feels better!!

  • Nikki January 17, 2013, 6:35 pm

Too funny that you would post henry sleeping in a weird position. One of my girlfriends just posted a picture of her little guy sleeping in a really weird position too. Interesting how now that were older we can barely fall asleep if we have to face the other way.

  • Jolene (www.everydayfoodie.ca) January 17, 2013, 6:48 pm

Oh cute!!! Haha! I love that pose 🙂

  • Erin @ The Grass Skirt January 17, 2013, 6:50 pm

I’m dreading the snow too. Hopefully, it is just a false alarm, and it shouldn’t stick because of all of this rain…right? 🙂

  • BroccoliHut January 17, 2013, 8:02 pm

Everyone is freaking out about the snow here in Durham too. I went to Kroger today, and they already had a big sign out front declaring that they have “everything you need for snow: sleds, scrapers, and firewood!” We’ll see if it actually sticks tonight!

  • Lili - Lirio Style January 17, 2013, 8:07 pm

Im so jealous you’re going to Florida. I miss the warm weather. Have a great marathon, and I hope your hip gets better!

    Love from California~

  • Presley @ Run Pretty January 17, 2013, 8:16 pm

The cold front caught me off guard today. I got a little too used to the unusually warm weather and wore sandals to work today. Ok, fine, flip flops. Anyway, it was freaking frigid when I left. Lesson learned.

  • Sara @ fitcupcaker January 17, 2013, 8:24 pm

Why do I love cookies so much!?!

  • Charitydawn January 17, 2013, 8:29 pm

Omg I love the sleeping position picture! To cute, sometimes ya gotta wonder how they get in those positions

  • Mary January 17, 2013, 8:46 pm

That is perfect weather for a race. Hope your hip pain is gone by then, and good luck!

  • Karen @ Runner Girl Eats January 17, 2013, 9:06 pm

I lovveee Immaculate cookies! They have a caramel peanut butter one that is sooooo good.

  • Alex @ Raw Recovery January 17, 2013, 9:19 pm

Umm…so…let’s talk about those cookies….HOLY GOD they look amazing. If they taste as good as they look I’ll be forever grateful 🙂 Although I’m already forever grateful because I learned about the C25K app from you and I’m going to be running my first 5k in a few weeks! I actually like exercising now! Hope the snow stays away from you on your race day! And that your hip feels better!

    • Caitlin January 18, 2013, 6:01 am

      Yay congrats on your 5k!

  • Amber K January 17, 2013, 9:48 pm

Okay that picture of Henry sleeping is adorable. I have a couple of pictures of my nephew sleeping in totally weird positions and I always think to myself “HOW is that comfortable?”

  • Vicki January 17, 2013, 10:38 pm

I want snow, and it PA we should have it in January for pete’s sake!! 🙁

  • Stacy @ Stacy Eats January 17, 2013, 10:53 pm

Looks like amazing weather for your half!! Have tons of fun!

  • Laurie January 17, 2013, 10:54 pm

That picture is too cute! Laughed out loud!

  • Kayla @ Lovely Ride January 17, 2013, 11:34 pm

I think Henry’s hip flexibility means he’s perfect for life as a dancer! He’ll be a heartbreaker with the ladies if he can rock a great grand jete! haha.

  • Angela January 18, 2013, 2:26 am

I’ve got snow at my house, snow and sun is great though. Way better than rain and gloom! 🙂

  • Brianne @ pootimestwo January 18, 2013, 8:22 am

hahahaha I can’t believe Henry was sleeping like that because one of my babies slept like that last night for the first time ever! It looked sooooo uncomfortable…almost like he was sitting up when he got sleepy and then just passed out and slept that way. Too cute.

  • Tabitha (From Single to Married) January 18, 2013, 8:24 am

That picture is hilarious! I have a Henry too (he’s almost three) and I’ve never caught him in a position like that. I did, however, find him sound asleep in his bedroom closet the other day. Scared me because I didn’t know where he had gone – he had closed the door and everything! Silly boys!

  • Alexandra January 18, 2013, 10:09 am

    1) You look lovely in your updated picture 🙂
    2) The EXACT same thing happened to my before my very first half (weird hip problems that I did not have before). I stretched, foam rolled, iced, and put myoflex on it religiously. It helped! I didn’t experience any pain during the race. Have a beautiful race!!

  • Ginnean January 18, 2013, 10:35 am

About 5-6 months after my baby was born, I also got a crazy random ache in my left hip. I think it was a mixture of distance running and always holding my baby on my left hip (which is what she preferred). I made sure to stretch after running, did a lot of pigeon poses in yoga and made a conscious effort not to hold my baby only on one side.

  • Brendali January 18, 2013, 3:00 pm

I was being a grumpster and just saw that picture of Henry. I literally just burst out laughing. I love babies. lol

  • Jessie January 18, 2013, 4:03 pm

haha! that made me laugh out loud on this Friday afternoon!

  • Lea @ Greens and Coffee Beans January 19, 2013, 12:36 am

I’m in the 6-12″ patch in Boone! Too bad none of my classes got cancelled.
And those chocolate chip cookies look seriously amazing. I see that brand at the store all the time but I’m scared to buy them because I’d probably eat the entire package at once 🙂

  • Emily @ Hungry Delights January 20, 2013, 6:24 am

You food looks absolutely delicious and those cookies I would really love one right now!
    xo Emily
