Little Words

in Henry

It’s the moment that I’ve been anticipating for over seven months…

IMG_4391

This morning, Henry said…

IMG_4395

Yup.  Mama.

IMG_4397

Sure…  He said to the cat, but I’m excited nevertheless.  “Mama!” escaped those little lips.  I hope looking at me and saying it isn’t too far behind.  <3  Obviously, Mama pancakes were on the menu.

Enough though Henry has said “Gaga,” “Dada,” “Baba” (what we call bottles), and now – yay! – “Mama,” I don’t really count those as real first words because he’s just babbling… not thinking about Lady Gaga, looking at Dad, wanting the bottle, or reaching for me when he says them.  However, we work a lot on “dog,” and he did pet Maggie the other day and say, “Dah!”  Getting close.  If anything, I’m thinking dog will be his first real word.

I often wonder if Henry thinks he’s a dog or if the pets are babies, too.  I’d love to get into that little noggin’ and figure out whether he thinks Maggie is his big sister.  He sure plays with her like she’s his sibling.

All in all, it’s already an awesome day, and it’s only 9:00 AM.  Smile

Oh my goodness – I can only imagine how heart-warming those words are! And the pancakes! Girl, you are way more talented than I am. I’m lucky if I get a full circle LOL

  • Cindy January 24, 2013, 9:00 am

    Awesomesauce! 🙂

  • Liz @ Tip Top Shape January 24, 2013, 9:02 am

Aaaawww, I feel like saying congrats but I don’t really know if that’s an appropriate response, lol. Anyhoo, I’m very happy for you 🙂 Also, that last picture is about eighteen levels of adorable!!

  • Dori January 24, 2013, 9:07 am

That last picture of Henry with the dogs – I can’t handle the cuteness and sweetness!

  • Coco January 24, 2013, 9:10 am

    That’s wonderful! Congrats Mama 🙂

  • Ali @ Super Mario Twins January 24, 2013, 9:13 am

Such a great feeling! And in a few short months you’ll hear it from his crib when he wakes up in the morning, or when reaching for you to pull him out of his high chair. I haven’t gotten tired of it at all and my boys are 18 months old. The best is that they’ve learned how to chant “Mama” when I’m making dinner. Makes me feel pretty awesome!

    • Caitlin January 24, 2013, 9:14 am

      That is super cute.

  • brooke @ sweats & sweets January 24, 2013, 9:18 am

Aw! Thats sweet, I love the pancakes! Every time I see Maggie on that changing pad, I bust out laughing. Its the funniest, cutest thing! And I’ve always wondered that too, if babies born into a family with dogs think they are dogs or if the dogs are babies.

  • Katie @ Peace Love & Oats January 24, 2013, 9:23 am

Congrats! Haha and I would love to know what babies think, and what dogs think! I feel like my brother’s golden retriever would have the best personality if she could talk…

  • Whitney @ Yoga Pancake January 24, 2013, 9:27 am

That’s awesome! My first word was dog and it will be cool if that is his first word too

  • W January 24, 2013, 9:27 am

So sweet. My daughter’s first word was ‘bella’ (our dog). It took her a while to say mama.

  • Claire @ Live and Love to Eat January 24, 2013, 9:27 am

Aww, what a sweet moment to celebrate!

  • Cassidy @ wine and ice cream January 24, 2013, 9:38 am

My daughter’s second word was dog-dog. She is obsessed with her dog. I think she does think they’re related… but, I wish I knew too…

  • Laura January 24, 2013, 9:41 am

I totally thought my dog was my older brother growing up :). And he was–the best, most patient, furriest older brother that anyone ever had.

    So sweet!

  • Peggi January 24, 2013, 9:42 am

Yay! Congrats to you and GREAT JOB Henry. I remember that day when my son said mama…..it is very exciting!! Of course he is almost 7, goodness the time goes so fast. Enjoy it!!

  • Natalie @ Free Range Human January 24, 2013, 9:46 am

    Congratulations! That is so wonderful!

  • Jen January 24, 2013, 9:49 am

Have you considered teaching him baby sign language? Now would be an awesome time to start. Most baby signers are early talkers. Mine is! She signed about 15 words before she moved exclusively to talking and now talks in full sentences and isn’t even 2 quite yet.

  • Joanne January 24, 2013, 9:53 am

What a wonderful time that must be to hear his very first “Mama”.

  • Allison January 24, 2013, 9:55 am

    YAY! How exciting 🙂

  • Michelle S January 24, 2013, 9:57 am

How exciting! I’m pretty sure that my son thought he was a dog for the first 3 years of his life. I have quite a few pictures of him at the window with the dogs “barking” at just about anything that moved in front of our house. The dogs kind of looked at him like he was some hairless wonder dog. One of our dogs thought she was his momma and felt it necessary to bark at his behind whenever he he had a dirty diaper. Dogs and babies…such funny little creatures.

  • Emily January 24, 2013, 9:59 am

Aww, so sweet! love the mama pancakes…what a great way to celebrate!

  • Becca January 24, 2013, 10:09 am

    Congratulations! What a dear story

  • Laura January 24, 2013, 10:11 am

My daughter’s first “real” word was around 10-11 months she started saying “Keeeeee” randomly. I finally figured out she was calling “kitty” to our ever elusive cat.

  • Liz January 24, 2013, 10:11 am

So cute! My oldest daughters first word was dada!! She didn’t say mama until she was almost 2.! Just everything in between. Seriously, it was almost a joke, but music to my ears when it happened!

  • Gina January 24, 2013, 10:15 am

I must say Henry is quite the handsome lil guy. I absolutely love the last picture on this post where he is with both pups.

  • Lauren January 24, 2013, 10:26 am

awww, what a wonderful day!! 🙂 I can’t believe how big he is getting.

  • Jessica R @ From the Kitchen to the Road January 24, 2013, 10:30 am

How exciting! I don’t have any children yet but I have been a full time nanny for over 8 years. I get so excited when the little one I am with learns my name. I can only imagine how that feels as the parent.

  • Reenie January 24, 2013, 10:34 am

Yea Henry!!! That last pic is adorable…..and it makes me smile to know that Maggie love her brother Henry =)

  • Sarah @ Yogi in Action January 24, 2013, 10:37 am

Yay- congratulations! I’ve heard it’s rare for babies to say “Mama” first because the “m” sound is harder to make.

That last picture of Henry and the dogs is absolutely adorable. He is such a cute baby!

  • Laura @ RunningJunkie123 January 24, 2013, 10:42 am

    That’s so exciting!!

I must be the worst mom ever because I don’t remember when she said “mama” or what her first word was:-/

  • Marie January 24, 2013, 10:44 am

Awe, it’s seriously the sweetest thing ever! Mine are five now and I still love hearing them call me Mama. 😉 Seeing and hearing him interact with the dogs is the sweetest thing ever!

  • Jacquelynn January 24, 2013, 10:55 am

Yay! So sweet… and those Mama pancakes look so good!

  • Morgan January 24, 2013, 10:56 am

Congrats Mama! What an exciting moment. Love the last picture of Henry with the dogs — seriously precious.

  • sarah January 24, 2013, 10:59 am

The “da” sound is easier to make than the “ma” sound, hence most babies get to “dada” first before “mama.” So “mama” shows real progress! Go Henry!

  • Jen F January 24, 2013, 11:15 am

So exciting! Yay! Thanks for sharing such a wonderful moment with us.

  • sara @ fitcupcaker January 24, 2013, 11:23 am

awesome! Hes so cute sitting there with the dog 🙂

  • Kristen L January 24, 2013, 11:40 am

That is so exciting! Henry seems like such a smart boy — he is learning so quickly!

  • Abbey January 24, 2013, 12:08 pm

My little sister’s first word was dog! It was really funny because at the time my mom babysat a little boy the same age as my sister. Anna could say “Dah” and her friend said “g,” but both were clearly speaking about our dogs and knew what they were saying. Together, they made a full word. 🙂

  • Angie January 24, 2013, 12:15 pm

I have a friend who has only 1 child and was terribly worried that he wasn’t “talking” in real words when he was around 1.5. Her pediatrician gave her very good advice which was that he was using his own words to signify things and that his parents needed to learn some of his language as they were teaching him theirs. And when they listened they realized that he was making sounds with intention. I tell the story to say that he probably does use at the very least “dah” and “baba” as words that mean particular things. Cool!!

  • Claire January 24, 2013, 12:24 pm

So cute! My daughter started with the “mamama”s around 5 months but didn’t associate them with me until 7 months (usually while crying and reaching for me – adorable and a definitely tugged at the heartstrings!). The babbling noises don’t become actual words with meanings until closer to a year to 15 months. I’ve read that in most languages the words mother, milk and breastfeeding all have the same origin, and in some languages they are the same word!

  • Stephanie January 24, 2013, 1:04 pm

Henry is so, so sweet and cute. I am four months pregnant, with two dogs, and I’m so worried about how the dogs will react to baby and how baby will be with dogs. I’m glad Henry and your dogs have gotten along so well. Gives me hope!

  • Amanda K. January 24, 2013, 1:08 pm

    Yay Henry!!
My son is 17 months old and he calls me “non-nee”. My husband enforces it, he’ll say, “Let’s go see Non-Nee!”
And I say he doesn’t understand because he’s been saying Dad-DEE! for MONTHS now!

  • Michelle January 24, 2013, 1:09 pm

Oh my gosh!!!! how cute is he!?!??!?!! Congrats on him saying Mama 🙂 LOVE IT!

  • Julie January 24, 2013, 1:28 pm

OMG that pic of him w/ the dogs is adorable!

  • Sheila@Chinaberry January 24, 2013, 2:22 pm

I love that you made pancakes that say Mama! And I love that you are named Mama. It’s near and dear to my heart, as I’m Mama and so was my Mama. Okay, enough silliness, but thanks for a big smile today. . . Mama.

  • Marci January 24, 2013, 2:45 pm

Cool! Logan is 10 months and hasn’t said mama. He says dada to everyone, including me, so I think he is saying my name, he just doesn’t know it’s me. That’s what I tell myself. He also says ee-ee and we think that means Lily, the dog. We also get a cute sound “ee-yah.” Not sure what it means but it’s cute.

  • Breanne January 24, 2013, 3:07 pm

Aw, yay! My friend’s son’s first official word was “Sadie” – yup, the dog’s name! 🙂

  • Emily @ Hungry Delights January 24, 2013, 5:04 pm

Yay! How adorable – he seems to love the dogs!

    xo Emily

  • LeeAnn January 24, 2013, 6:24 pm

My first word was doggie 😀 Great first word, that way neither parent gets to really claim it 😉

  • Heather January 24, 2013, 7:13 pm

Love the pancakes, and congrats, must be exciting!

  • Mai January 24, 2013, 7:36 pm

    aww such an adorable post.

  • Haley @ fullnfit January 24, 2013, 8:46 pm

LOVE LOVE LOVE! This post made me smile… and you’re too cute making the pancakes.

  • Katie @ Talk Less, Say More January 24, 2013, 9:25 pm

I’m sure he thinks they’re BFFs, so he’s got to say “dog” first. 🙂

  • Amber K January 24, 2013, 9:40 pm

    Awww, cute!

  • Carly January 24, 2013, 10:32 pm

So sweet!! I was so excited when my son first said ‘Mama’, I even cried a little. He moved on to ‘Dada’, and that’s his go-to now! 😉
And that last photo of him with his dogs is oh!so cute!

  • Jolene (www.everydayfoodie.ca) January 24, 2013, 11:41 pm

Ahhh sweet!!! How exciting it must be to hear those words!!!

  • Maija January 25, 2013, 1:46 pm

I’m a Peace Corps volunteer in Togo (west Af) and in my local language most forms of mom, aunt, grandma and sister include ‘da’ somehow and in my incredibly unscientific interpretation I like to think that it’s because da is one of the first syllables a baby can say. So just because it’s dad in English doesn’t mean you can’t accept dada too!
