Late Race

in All Posts

I took this nice, pretty picture of my bowl o’ oatmeal and cup o’ coffee, which I was eating in front of my computer, but right before I went to hit publish, I realized our mouse pad was visible.  Let’s just say our mouse pad is not safe for Internet consumption, as it features someone (hilariously) modeling Statue of David undies.  A man in your life probably needs these undies (warning… private parts).

Anywho, so here’s a little paintbrush drawing of my morning:  coffee, oatmeal, blogs.  Duh.

On any other race day morning, I would be, well, racing right now.  But my 8K race is at 3 PM – isn’t that kind of weird?  But also kind of awesome?!  No waking up super-early, no rushing to the starting line.  And since this is a winter race, it will be warmer – hopefully all this ice will have melted.

Of course, most races are in the morning, which means I’m not 100% confident on how to fuel for a 3 PM race.  After some thought, I realize that I do most of my workouts in the afternoon, so I should probably just eat as I normally would, but try not to stuff my face with a delicious lunch at, say, 2 PM.  I can do that.

Anyone else ever do a late race? Got any advice?  I’ve seen some races that start at 9 PM or later… even a few midnight ones!  Crazy.  I’m in my pajamas by 9 PM and through my third dream by midnight!  Winking smile

Good luck on the race! The latest race I completed was the Pretty Muddy mud run 5k at 11 am. I honestly did the same fueling – a banana and pb. The David Shorts are hilarious!

Haha I hear ya about the pajamas at 9! That’s a late night for me! I find that I’m excited about a race on the actual day though so it’s much easier to run at a different time! Good luck!

I’ve never done a late race, so no advice, but good luck! Have fun!

Ive never done a late race…sounds, um cold 🙂

  • Carly @LifeInTraining January 26, 2013, 10:46 am

I’ve never done a race that started later than 10am! An afternoon race is kind of odd, but I guess it makes sense in the winter? I feel like I would build up so much nervous energy waiting! Good luck – hope you PR. 🙂

    Love the paintbrush drawing 😉

A midnight run in theory sounds fun… But I’d never make it! I’m kind of a grandma.

I can’t imagine running a super late night race. My body shuts down around 7pm and I’m ready for bed around 9:30pm…haha. But an early morning run after 5:30am? I’m totally game! 😀

Ha! I bought a pair of those for fun when I went to Italy a few years ago. I don’t think anyone has every put them on though!

I did a “twilight” race once (it was actually my first race EVER, a 5K). It just felt like a regular evening workout with friends. It was fun and I got a medal at the end which I was excited about, being it my first medal. Either way, GOOD LUCK! Sounds like a fun time.

Hope your race went (is going – since you’re running right now!) well. That is hiiilarious about the mouse pad, my bf needs those shorts haha!

I have done two later races. One that started at 7pm (half marathon) and one that started at 3pm (full marathon). Both were difficult for me for fueling. But I honk 3pm was worse! I’d much rather exercise or race in the morning!

We have a Twilight cross country meet every year. Its a 5k and our gun goes off at 9PM! It’s so much fun because we run on a golf course with glowsticks and fireworks 🙂 I usually eat my prerace breakfast (PB sandwich and an apple) a couple hours before the race and make sure not to eat any funky stuff or be too active throughout the day. Also hydration is key! Good luck 🙂

The only race that I ever did was 10k Bonner Nactlauf (Bonn night run), where about 2000 people do it in our town starting around 9pm. It was not so bad for me, because I did the trainings after work with my friends, and since it was in summer time, it was actually way cooler and easier to run. This year I want to do the same run, but since I switched to the morning workouts, I am not really sure how is it going to look like

I would definitely find fueling to be the hardest part, as it’s usually the hardest part when I end up going for afternoon runs or workouts. Though in my attempt today at an afternoon workout, it got postponed for a nap instead. 😉

Bahaha about the mouse pad! That’s awesome!

I did a 5K a few years back that began at noon, which would’ve been great if it wasn’t July in Georgia. It was sweltering and miserable. A 3 PM race in the middle of winter is genius though!

  • Elisabeth January 26, 2013, 8:29 pm

Ha ha ha!!! Hilarious mousepad 😉

  • Amber K January 26, 2013, 9:13 pm

That is the only way I would even consider doing a race. They are always either way too early or at midnight or something. Mid-afternoon is about when I’d be exercising anyway!

You are a talented drawer. My fiance loved those boxers! Valentines present I think hahaha..

The only races I’ve ever done started after work at like 6:30 – it was last June, my memory fails me – and for me it’s all about bananas!

  • Amanda K. January 27, 2013, 7:42 pm

i got a 5k pr in a midnight race! granted, i was also 20 and midnight meant something different than it does now…
before i had a baby, i LOVED running in the afternoon/evening. in college i’d always go for runs around campus at 10pm. now that just sounds crazy.
