Henry’s cold has progressed to full-blown miserableness.  When he’s sick like this, he just wants to be held (don’t we all?!) so H and I shared the guest bed last night.  I don’t know how you cosleepers sleep well (but I know you do, so please share your secret) – my arms always feel stiff from staying in the same position all night, and I sleep so lightly because I’m so worried about him.  Anyway, at dawn, the Husband and I swapped duties, and I ended up going back to sleep for far too long.

But when I finally came downstairs, and Kristien was cuddling a sniffle baby and singing him One Direction’s Little Things.  Cutest thing ever.  Doesn’t he know stuff like that makes my ovaries ache?!

Our fridge is so bare!  This is the last of the decent breakfast meals.

This is my regular smoothie (frozen strawberries, banana, soy milk, peanut butter) but I tried out this new pea protein.  Kristien picked it up last week, and I was finally brave enough to crack it open.  Yeah… it was gross. So gross.  There are some things that should just not be destined to be protein powder, methinks.

Headbands of Hope Twitter Giveaway

Remember the wonderful organization Headbands of Hope?  Headbands of Hope was created by a college student named Jessica.  For every headband purchased from Headbands of Hope, the organization donates a headband to a girl who has lost her hair after cancer treatment. Headbands of Hope and Operation Beautiful have teamed up to create an official Operation Beautiful headband.

Being a young girl presents many struggles with self-esteem already and losing their hair as a result of a life-threatening illness is traumatic. Not only do they have to face the risk of losing their lives, they feel that they lose a part of their identity. Headbands are a perfect way for these girls to feel "girly" and have a constant reminder that they’re not alone. Therefore, at Headbands of Hope for every headband purchased, one is given to a girl with cancer and $1 is donated to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation to fund life-saving childhood cancer research.  Jessica and I designed the Operation Beautiful headband to incorporate strong positive messages – Vibrant, Strong, Beautiful, Hope, Courage – on a pretty purple band.  It’s stretchy and soft.

It fits adult noggins too. Smile

We’re giving away THREE headbands.  Just tweet @HeadbandsofHope and @BeautifulNotes with your favorite inspirational quote.  We’ll pick three Twitter winners on Monday.

Here’s mine:  “Happiness often sneaks in through a door you didn’t know you left open.”

OMG, that boy is even cute with a headband on. He’s too adorable!

  • Amanda, RD- The Nutritionist Reviews January 11, 2013, 10:51 am

Aww how cute that your husband was singing to Henry! Love that song : )

  • Ahna January 11, 2013, 11:04 am

We have the same protein powder! It definitely needs added sweetener to mask the pea-ness. We’ve used a little fruit juice, which helped. There are other pea protein powders with sweetening and flavor, which my husband preferred.

I feel your pain…last night was the exact same for us with our 6 month old. The only thing that would comfort our runny nose little boy was to sleep in bed with us. My left wrist is majorly messed up this morning.

  • jen January 11, 2013, 11:08 am

hope he feels better soon. our 1 yr old had the flu last week and it was miserable. he was so sad and we literally held him at all times for 3 days straight when he was awake. exhausting for everyone. i haven’t mastered co-sleeping either..even with our 3 yr old i hardly sleep at all when she’s in the bed with me.

  • Vicki January 11, 2013, 11:11 am

Kristien singing Little Things to Henry = totally slayed over here.

  • Sarah @ Yogi in Action January 11, 2013, 11:11 am

haha I love how even when it’s your child it makes your ovaries ache!

I don’t know if this truly counts as an inspirational quote, but I love it so much so I’m using it:
“Everyone’s a genius. But if you judged a fish by it’s ability to climb a tree, it would live its living believing it was stupid.” Einstein

  • MacKenzie January 11, 2013, 11:15 am

What type of protein powder do you usually use? I always tend to buy the grossest kinds and need some suggestions. I hope that Henry feels better soon!!

    • Caitlin January 11, 2013, 11:26 am

Standard Process has a nondairy protein powder that I really like.

  • Katie @ Peace Love & Oats January 11, 2013, 11:21 am

Pea Protein just sounds wrong. And here’s my quote (which I tweeted): “It’s supposed to be hard. If it wasn’t hard, everyone would do it. The hard… is what makes it great” – A League of Their Own

  • Kelly January 11, 2013, 11:28 am

I almost bought that pea protein off of your Vitamins website! Glad I waited 🙂

    • Caitlin January 11, 2013, 11:31 am

Yeah, me no likey. We need to swap it out with something else!!!

  • Becky January 11, 2013, 11:40 am

how does Henry get sick so often if he’s not really “exposed to the elements” of say, a daycare? I know my little girl gets sick often, but she also goes to a daycare nearly daily.
Hope the little bebe gets better soon! So sad to see them sick 🙁

    • Caitlin January 11, 2013, 11:53 am

Well this is only his second real illness. He does go to daycare at my gym two to three times a week… I guess that’s enough. Building his immune system, one cold at a time. 🙂

      • Charitydawn January 11, 2013, 1:47 pm

My little boy got his cold, which is now bronchitis, from a family funeral. Illness doesn’t come just from daycares.

  • Hayley @ Running on Pumpkin January 11, 2013, 11:46 am

Oh my gosh, your husband singing One Direction to your baby? That is the cutest thing I’ve ever heard!

  • Becca January 11, 2013, 12:10 pm

Try Pure Matters chocolate pea protein!! I got it in my October Klutch club box (which btw, Caitlin you should really try Klutch club, I think you’d like it!) and I really like it. I do admit, it is very sweet, but it makes the BEST banana, pb, chocolate smoothies… 😀

Hope little Henry feels better soon!

  • Dominique January 11, 2013, 12:26 pm

I think the co-sleeping is just something you get used to. We don’t co-sleep all the time, but I often pull the baby into bed with us when she wakes up to eat between 3 and 4 in the morning. For a long time, I would never fall asleep while nursing her, but now I do all the time. Also, at first, I would wake up stiff and cranky, but now, it feels pretty normal. I don’t think there is any secret other than relax, trust yourself and your baby, and understand that it takes some getting used to.

  • Stephanie January 11, 2013, 12:27 pm

Without a doubt the quote of the week: “… makes my ovaries ache” Love it! I’m going to need to use that on my husband!

  • Katie @ peacebeme January 11, 2013, 12:32 pm

“Who is the happier man? He who has braved the storm of life and lived or he who has stayed securely on shore and merely existed?” Hunter S. Thompson

Sorry, wanted to share but couldn’t fit it on Twitter!

  • cassidy @wine and ice cream January 11, 2013, 1:01 pm

My girlie is sick, too. The only good thing is that she’ll cuddle. Also, I’ve wondered the same thing about co sleepers. I embrace all the attatchment parenting ideas, but co sleeping doesn’t work for me.

  • Sara @ fitcupcaker January 11, 2013, 1:06 pm

How cute are these! I work at a pediatric hospital in Cincy with kids with cancer…Great opportunity and I love charity work, so great! I love the words, hope, strong, courage!

  • Leah January 11, 2013, 1:37 pm

I like Plant Fusion!! Good for vegetarians or the ProFIT from It Works! is really good too if you are looking for a nutritional drink with protein

  • Jen January 11, 2013, 2:02 pm

Oh man, sorry you were up all night. Those nights are hard on everyone. You don’t think he has an ear infection, do you? My little one got them with almost every cold (until she got tubes) or teething, and she never pulled her ears or anything. Disrupted sleep was sometimes her only symptom. Might be worth an ear check.

  • Stephanie @ A Girl and Her Manny January 11, 2013, 3:56 pm

I love this! I will definitely be buying one. The headband looks like it would be great to wear during workouts.

  • Amanda January 11, 2013, 4:12 pm

    Hi Caitlin!

I have a quick question about the Udi’s bread you use. I have recently gone gluten-free because I was having consistent stomach aches. I know it is easy to fall into the trap of gluten-free packaged foods but am trying by best to eat clean. I do buy Udi’s GF bread or another GF brand because I miss having sandwiches but am concerned about the amount of sodium and lack of fiber in these types of breads. I wish I could still eat whole grains for the fiber etc. but they’re making me sick. Do you feel okay eating GF breads even though they are not completely clean? I’d love your opinion!

    Amanda

    • Caitlin January 11, 2013, 4:26 pm

Yup. It doesn’t bother me. It’s definitely processed but I try to choose my battles 😉

  • Elisabeth January 11, 2013, 4:32 pm

    Henry is so stinking cute!

  • dana January 11, 2013, 4:44 pm

    He is ridiculously cute!

  • Amber K January 11, 2013, 9:48 pm

lol, that’s the exact protein I’ve been using for years. I love that is has just ONE ingredient. Not that I’d ever eat it by itself, but I can successfully hide it with fruit and cocoa powder. 🙂

    • JL January 12, 2013, 12:36 pm

Me too! 🙂 I put 1 or 2 Tbsp of powder into my oatmeal as well as fruit smoothies.

  • Hilary @ PeanutButterSpoonfuls January 11, 2013, 10:09 pm

I think the secret to cosleeping is mostly just being so exhausted that nothing phases you. Eventually you get so used to having a little squirmer there and sleep right through it. I know what you mean about the worry though. We started cosleeping when my son was 5 months and I was constantly waking up to see if he was still breathing. Now he’s almost 16 months and I feel nervous about him if he’s not right next to me. I think I’d react the same way you did f I just did it for one night, I’d be zonked!

  • Marie-Sophie January 12, 2013, 7:48 am

It’s a thing with the protein powders … I finally found a good pea protein that is perfectly palatable. I read about a guy in his twenties who as a vegan couldn’t find a decent vegan protein powder (here in Germany) so he developed one himself and founded a company!! So brave! So for any folks living in Germany: http://www.herbiwarrior.de !! Gotta support small self-made business! 🙂

By the way, my inspirational quote is: “You happy thoughts create your healthy body”

It was given to me after a yoga class and I think it’s perfect.

  • Heather January 12, 2013, 9:21 am

  • Seema January 12, 2013, 10:24 am

This is such a life changing quote for me
