Snot River

in All Posts

If there ever was a day (is that even grammatically correct? I am so tired that I can’t decide) that I desperately needed an IV of coffee, it is today.  Poor Henry has the worst cold of his life.  The one and only symptom is snot pouring out of his little nose.  He didn’t sleep very well last night (understatement of the year).   You know how terrible it is to try to sleep with a stuffy nose?  I hate that feeling.

But at least I understand what’s happening when I’m sick!  Poor baby doesn’t.

As a side note, the other day, I was drinking a cup of coffee in bed, and Maggie jumped on me.  I spilled some on my pillow, and now my pillow smells AMAZING.  I don’t want to wash it!

IMG_3551

So, needless to say, we will be laying very, very low today.  Very low, indeed.

Standard fare:  eggs, toast, fruit.  And coffee.  Lots and lots of coffee.

I hope everyone else is having a healthier and more rested day!

If ever there was (I’m pretty sure that’s grammatically correct!) a statement that epitomized the “glass half full” outlook, it’s “I spilled coffee on my pillow and now it smells AMAZING!” Trying to follow your lead on thinking positive today!

  • Lauren December 19, 2012, 12:40 pm

Bless his heart (and yours!) Praying for health to relieve you soon!

  • Alex @ Raw Recovery December 19, 2012, 12:42 pm

Poor Henry! It must be terrible to be a baby and be sick. I hope you both get some rest today!

  • Meredith December 19, 2012, 12:45 pm

My sweet boy came down with a cold on Monday, and each night has gotten worse and worse. He was sleeping through the night and last night he was up almost every hour. 🙁 I feel so bad for him. I am having him take his naps and sleep some at night in his swing, and keeping him upright seems to help him sleep longer than in his crib.

  • Sana December 19, 2012, 12:45 pm

    Hope Henry feels better 🙁

  • Kendra @ My Full-Thyme Life December 19, 2012, 12:50 pm

Poor Henry AND poor mommy!!! It’s so hard when they are sick. Luckily babies are resiliant little buggers and sometimes I think it’s harder on us than it actually is on them. I hope he gets better very soon and you all get some much needed rest!

  • Claire December 19, 2012, 12:54 pm

Aw, poor little guy! Our baby girl had two minor colds in her first year (we’ve been really lucky that she’s never even run a fever or had an infection though, I’ll credit exclusive breastfeeding for that!). Here’s what helped us: sitting in the bathroom w/the hot shower running, the Nosefrida (a MILLION times better than a bulb syringe; it helps prevent their nose from getting raw and painful from lots of wiping/rubbing) and breastmilk (instead of saline drops – works better I’ve found) to loosen up the crud before suctioning , having her sleep in an elevated position, and of course lots and lots of nursing and cuddling .

And you are SO lucky that you get to be home with him! That’s been the most heartbreaking part of being a working parent so far – being up with my sick girl all night long, then having to leave her to go to work the next morning (even though I was leaving her with her grandmother, it was still super hard). And drinking coffee in bed sounds so nice and relaxing! I don’t think I’ve had the chance to do anything like that in a year!

I hope Henry feels better soon!

Hi Claire – I’ve heard BM is great for a stuffy/runny nose because of the antibodies in our milk. My question is, what do you use to squirt it in the nose? A dropper?

      • Claire December 19, 2012, 5:01 pm

When they’re really little (and less squirmy, ha!) you can just squirt it up in her nose directly from the source, as it were. 🙂 When our girl was older with her second cold, I just expressed some into a container then used a clean eye dropper that came with her vit D drops.

Poor Henry! Yes, lay low and take care of that baby. The routine in our house is: baby gets sick, mama gets sick.

When my son got his first cold I kept thinking of how when I’m sick I always wake up in the middle of the night feeling horrible and I just blow my nose and roll over and feel miserable until I finally fell asleep…and how he didn’t know what was going on. There’s nothing more sad than a sick baby 🙁

  • Jen December 19, 2012, 1:00 pm

Aw poor baby! Have you tried boogie wipes? They are saline tissues so their little noses won’t get irritated. Also, vicks vapor rub for congestion and a humidifier!

  • Kerry December 19, 2012, 1:01 pm

Before bed rub some Vick’s on his feet and put him in footy PJs or in some socks…works like a charm.

  • Stellina @ My Yogurt Addiction.com December 19, 2012, 1:02 pm

Poor little thing 🙁 Hate when kids are sick! They can’t tell you what they need or how they are feeling. Get well soon Henry!

  • Katie December 19, 2012, 1:12 pm

First of all, I hope Henry feels better soon! Secondly, if I spilled coffee on my pillowcase I’d freak out about the stain, scold the dog, etc etc. When your only comment was that it smells amazing, I couldn’t help but laugh. [Note to self: loosen up! 🙂 ]

  • Sam @ Better With Sprinkles December 19, 2012, 1:24 pm

    Hope the cold isn’t a long-lasting one!

  • Erin B December 19, 2012, 1:27 pm

I hope Henry feels better soon! He is so adorable.

  • Molly @ RDexposed December 19, 2012, 1:27 pm

    Were. Its a hypothetical clause.

  • Sarah @ Yogi in Action December 19, 2012, 1:34 pm

Aww- sorry to hear Henry isn’t feeling well. Hopefully you both are able to nap later in the day and start to feel better.

Also, Henry’s little monkey slippers are SO adorable!

  • Kelli December 19, 2012, 1:50 pm

Hi Caitlin! I was curious as to how Henry seems to do with the caffeine in your breast milk? Does he not seem to mind it? I really really really hope my child is ok with it! I have a feeling I will need the boost!

    • Caitlin December 19, 2012, 3:00 pm

      He doesn’t care!

      • Mo December 19, 2012, 3:40 pm

I concur. I EBF my baby and I’m a caffeine addict – even drink the caffeine energy drinks like Monster and Red Bull on occasion (I know – bad!) and she has never shown any signs of wakefulness or fussy.

        • Kelli December 19, 2012, 5:04 pm

          Great to know! Thank you!

    • Jessica December 19, 2012, 9:50 pm

Kelli: if it does seem to bother your child, try again when they are a bit older. Just one cup of coffee a day would make my son crazy and wired when he was a newborn. At around the 4 month mark it stopped affecting him. I’m afraid to try more than one cup but that’s lovely after having none during the sleep deprivation 🙂

      • Kelli December 20, 2012, 8:00 am

        Thanks Jessica!

  • Halsy December 19, 2012, 1:59 pm

Hope Henry feels better quickly. If a cough develops, you might want to take him to your pediatrician. My little girl just got done with croup and even had to be hospitalized because she quit breathing twice(so thankful for angelcare sound and movement monitor for the first time because she quit breathing in middle of night). It started out as a runny nose for a couple days then a bad cough (which mostly happened on evening and overnight). All in all lasted 10 days and doctor at children’s said it was cause by flu(thankfully not rsv). We did lots of liquid quit the solids for a few days to focus on breastmilk, cool mist humidifier first thing in morning, 1-2 times during day and ran it most of night in her nursery, also aspiration, boogie wipes unscented variety, and saline solution.

    • Caitlin December 19, 2012, 3:00 pm

Oh no!!! I am SOOOO glad she is okay.

  • Natalie @ Free Range Human December 19, 2012, 2:07 pm

Poor kid! I hope he gets to feeling better. And I hope you get some rest!

  • MomHTP December 19, 2012, 2:11 pm

So sorry to hear that Henry has a cold. Wish there was something safe for babies to take that would dry up the “snot river” symptom so he could get the sleep he (AND YOU) so desperately needs to feel better sooner. Do you think it was from Day Care….?

  • Rebecca December 19, 2012, 2:17 pm

Ohhh, sick is no fun for anybody, but probably worse for little ones! Poor Henry. Hope he gets better soon!

  • Katie December 19, 2012, 2:23 pm

Poor little guy. I second the comments about the Nose Frida – works great! My baby still hates it but it is a lot faster than using the bulb.

  • Liz December 19, 2012, 2:51 pm

Poor Henry and you too. I hope he feels better soon!
I just had Whole Foods salad/hot bar for the first time and I really think I prefer Earth Fare. I’m interested to know your take?

  • Erika December 19, 2012, 3:01 pm

Baby colds suck. Hot steamy bathrooms really help clear my son up.

  • Elisabeth December 19, 2012, 3:12 pm

Well he might not feel good, but he sure looks cute in that picture! 😉

  • Lauren December 19, 2012, 3:17 pm

Buy a NoseFrida snot sucker! It’s amazing paired with saline used before sucking out the snot. It helped my babe sleep so much better with her last cold. Get well soon!

    • Gina (fitnessista) December 19, 2012, 4:32 pm

      second the nosefrida! it’s a lifesaver 🙂

  • Crystal December 19, 2012, 3:30 pm

Baby Vaporub on his feet and chest!

  • Jacalyn December 19, 2012, 4:06 pm

Hope Henry feels better. I feel so bad when kiddos get sick. My 3 year old will sit upright in bed crying that he can’t breathe, which causes more runny nose, which causes more frustration and crying. It’s definitely a vicious ugly cycle. At least he understands the suction helps and will ask me to suction his nose when it gets really bad.

  • Grace @ Grace Dishes December 19, 2012, 4:13 pm

I hope he feels better! He is so adorable in his outfit 🙂

  • Sharisse December 19, 2012, 4:51 pm

Hi, Caitlin! I just want to tell you I’ve been following your blog for some time now and it is so wonderful to see your baby grow beautifully. He is way too cute in that picture. Thanks for sharing!

  • lea December 19, 2012, 4:53 pm

You need to get a nose frida. It’s amazing and will help your little ones stuffed up nose issue

  • Jess December 19, 2012, 5:54 pm

Poor Henry =( My almost 7 month old has been chronically congested for about 5 months now…we are visiting an ENT in two weeks. The doctor suggested sleeping in his car seat so we could ALL get some sleep. It has worked WONDERS. It’s the only position that he will sleep 11.5 hours in! The incline helps drain the nose. Give it a try if you have a rough night. Hope he feels better soon!

  • Lesley December 19, 2012, 7:46 pm

    Feel better, Henry!

  • Amber K December 19, 2012, 8:09 pm

I hate it when babies are sick. Super sad. I hope he feels better soon!

  • Jacquelynn December 19, 2012, 9:38 pm

I just read an interesting article about how keeping onions sitting out in your house helps ward off sickness. Also, if you are already sick, cut the ends off of an onion and put it next to your bed when you sleep, and it helps you get better quicker!

  • Katie @ Soulshine and Sassafras December 19, 2012, 10:16 pm

What a great positive spin to the spilt coffee! I thought you were going to say you were sad it stained, but you’re right, it probably does smell amazing 🙂 Sorry Henry has a stuffed up nose. I hope he’s feeling better soon. Poor little guy.

  • Amber @ Busy, Bold, Blessed December 20, 2012, 7:57 am

    Feel better little Henry!!!

  • Laura December 20, 2012, 8:53 am

When our daughter had her first bad cold we went out and bought a humidifier and it has worked wonders. We liked hers so much, we later got one for our bedroom. (it’s this model if interested http://www.walmart.com/ip/Vicks-Warm-Mist-Humidifier/10261752). Hope Henry feels better soon!

  • Rachel December 20, 2012, 10:47 am

I have to know- did you make the mug? I’ve seen all the pinterest make mug posts but I’ve also seen a lot of review about the paint/marker not sticking to the mug. Just curious what you used.

    • Caitlin December 20, 2012, 2:03 pm

Yes but I made it at one of those pottery places with a professional kiln!

  • Katy Widrick December 20, 2012, 3:16 pm

Lucky girl…my pillow smells vaguely of spit-up, despite multiple hits with the Febreeze bottle, time outside in the breeze, etc. And of course, I have washed my pillowcases. Time for a new pillow, methinks.

So sorry for poor Henry…and mama!
