Half a year already? No! It can’t be.

From this to this in a blink of an eye.

month 1 IMG_3327

I normally discuss how I’m doing for my Mind and Body After Baby updates, but this month, I really want to focus on Henry.  But before that, I’ll quickly give you a body update – I’m officially at my pre-pregnancy weight.  Wahoo!  I think I hit this goal a few weeks ago.  My body definitely doesn’t look the same, but it’s pretty close, and generally speaking, I feel like I did before I was pregnant.

In total, I gained 35 pounds, which is at the top of the healthy gain range.  In hindsight, I guess I put on a bit of ‘unnecessary’ body fat, but I don’t think I would do anything differently.  I exercised regularly; I ate mostly healthy foods.  My body needed the weight for whatever reason.  The number on the scale is just a number.  The most important part of my Body After Baby story is the realization that, if and when I have a second baby, I will do everything in my power to stay active up until delivery.  I walked and swam regularly while pregnant with Henry, and I really believe it was one of the key factors in my ability to have a drug-free birth.  And it helped me bounce back relatively fast – I was running four weeks after delivery.

Alright – it’s Henry time now.

photo 4

I wanted to focus on Henry this month because I feel like the past four weeks have been so important.  All of the sudden, Henry’s developmental milestones are FLYING by… I feel like he’s growing up so fast.  It makes me really happy, but it also makes me a little wistful as I watch him inch closer to being a toddler and away from a baby.  I guess that’s parenthood, huh?

Henry is a master crawler.  He is so proficient at the army crawl (on his stomach) that he doesn’t bother with being on all-fours much, but he can do it when he wants to.  He began to crawl at 5 months, 1 week, which was definitely early and a big surprise.  If I turn around, he’s suddenly in the other room!  Scary.

6 (162)

He can also sit up unassisted now for long, long stretches.  A few weeks ago, I put him into a sitting position and timed him on my phone.  He sat up for a minute before falling over.  But just a few days later, he was sitting up like it was no big deal.  Now, he sits up all the time and rarely likes to be on his stomach or back.  He can also go from crawling to sitting up in the blink of an eye – I call it “pop up baby” because he just POPS up into sitting and looks around like, “Hey! Cool!”

This week, Henry started to pull himself up into standing positions using furniture as leverage, which scares the daylights out of me.  He does this most often in his crib when he wakes up from a nap.

henry standing

Heeey. You come here often?

What does all this crawling, sitting, and standing action mean?  Well, it definitely means more falling.  I feel like Henry falls over all of the time.  I spend 90% of my day trying to stop him from eating non-edible objects and catching him as he tips over.  He’s fearless!  As a side note, do you know that the entire world is one giant choking hazard?  Yup.

He’s developing other new skills, too.  The other day, Kristien called me over.  He was giving Henry a bottle, and while drinking, Henry was passing back a little teething ring between his left and right hand, over and over again.  This doesn’t sound like a big deal, but it’s huge – so much hand-eye coordination going on in that little brain.  I also gave him a sippy cute filled with water, and it took him about a week to figure out how to drink out of it.

photo 3

Because Henry has become so mobile, I created a playroom for him.  I asked other mommas if they ‘trap’ their baby into play spaces, and I got so many different answers – some moms said no, others said absolutely.  I decided it probably depends a lot on the baby’s temperament.  And Henry is definitely the kind of baby that occasionally needs to be trapped in a safe space.  I bought a faux-hardwood play mat and what I lovingly refer to as a baby cage (I connected it to a system we already had with duct tape to save cash; now that he’s pulling up on stuff, I will probably buy another baby cage to connect everything properly).  The mat and cage went into the eat-in kitchen and – TADA! – a baby playroom was born.  Hi, I am that person who let their home be taken over by baby crap.  And I don’t even care.

IMG_3286

And, of course, Henry was successful sleep trained and started to sleep through the night.  AMEN.  Best milestone ever.

IMG_3149

One milestone that Henry is still working towards is talking.  He JUST started to really babble (as opposed to making squeaks and squeals).  As a matter of fact, when I drafted this post on Monday, I wrote how he wasn’t babbling at all, and then, on Tuesday, he went nuts.  He’s doing lots of “goo goo ga ga” and “gee! gee!” and I’ve heard a few “bababa.”  And a week ago, he figured out his name – he whips around when you say, “Henry!” – which is super cute.  A sure sign of our vainness – I spend al my time trying to convince Henry to say “mama”  and the Husband works on “dada.”

Other Henry facts:

  • Likes:  Going for walks, petting Pippa and Maggie, his baby cage, toys that light up, taking big boy baths with mom or dad, chewing on non-edible objects, meeting with our mommy group, going to childcare at the gym.
  • Dislikes:  His jumper (so over it), his car seat.
  • Teeth:  None!
  • Sleep Habits:  Three naps during the day, sleeping through the night from 7:30 – 6:20.
  • Clothing Size: 3 – 6 month.
  • Solid Food:  Henry has treated sweet potato (yuck), pears (yum), and broccoli (yum).

Alriiight.  I re-read this post and realize that most of is it crazy momma speak.  But you know what? I am so happy and so thankful.  Henry’s health is not something that I take for granted in the slightest.  I look at Henry and know that if just one gene was expressed differently, our entire world could be different.  Not necessarily bad-different, but perhaps.  You never really know.  I take my physical abilities for granted far too much, but having Henry makes me look at everything I do in a new light.  Being able to crawl, walk, and talk are wonderful gifts that not everyone receives.  I feel so incredibly blessed to be healthy and have a healthy child.  It’s so easy in our society to feel like we don’t have enough of something.  I fall into this trap all the time – not enough money, time, material things, pretty clothes, whatever.  I try to remind myself frequently that we are lucky in so many of the ways that actually matter.

IMG_3341

Six months of growing, learning, playing, and laughing.  And I wouldn’t change a single thing.  Well… maybe less crying.  We could all do with less crying!  Winking smile

Henry is so cute! I can’t believe he is able to drink out of a sippy cup already. Such a smart little boy 🙂

  • Jennifer December 12, 2012, 2:48 pm

I don’t think it’s possible for Henry to be any cuter!! Such a sweet pea. You look great, Caitlin. 🙂

  • Mandy @ Eat Pray Grow December 12, 2012, 2:51 pm

My nephew started walking at 9 months, and never did crawl. It’s nice to read this and realize how different all babies are in their milestones – none of them seem to go “by the book!”

  • Verna December 12, 2012, 2:53 pm

Great post!! It’s so amazing the things they learn and in such a short time! If you have another baby it will learn things at totally different times and make a bigger deal out of things Henry does easily. Avery likes to throw things. She just tosses them gently but she acts so surprised by it, it’s the sweetest thing. I don’t remember Garrett doing that but I’m sure he must have. It’s so fun!

  • Dayna December 12, 2012, 2:58 pm

    Caitlin,

I’m currently 14 weeks pregnant with my first child and have been reading your blog for a long time now. You are such an inspiration to me and a lot of what I have learned about pregnancy, birth, etc has been influenced by what you write about on your blog. Thank you so much for sharing all of this, as I really get a joy out of reading it! Oh, and Henry is THE CUTEST!! Thanks for sharing so many awesome pictures of him and updating on his progress!
    Happy 6 months to Henry!!

    Dayna 🙂

  • colleen December 12, 2012, 2:58 pm

Oh, the baby cage. We loved the ability to place the youngsters inside their area and have the opportunity to get something done without worrying about what they were into. Loved how you finished up this post. Too much time has been spent on unecessary items. My two sons are celebrating their birthdays this week and I’ve been looking at them repeatedly wondering what happened to the last 9 and 7 years. Then I turn to my daughter and wonder what happened to the last 3.5 yrs. So many days/weeks/months have blended together over the years. Definitely need to readjust our lives to remember moments instead of relying on photos to reminder ourselves of what happened.

  • Kerry December 12, 2012, 2:58 pm

Lower that crib please!!! That pic makes me anxious.

    • Caitlin December 12, 2012, 3:12 pm

Me too!!! Lol it’s in the agenda today.

  • Vikki December 12, 2012, 3:04 pm

Your kid is so cute. I just want to pinch those adorable little cheeks.

  • Sarah @ Yogi in Action December 12, 2012, 3:10 pm

Wow- I knew babies grew fast but to look at that picture of Henry at a week old, and him at 6 months kind of blows my mind.

Way to look at the important things (like being healthy)! It’s sooo easy to take it for granted. Thanks for the reminder!

  • helene @healthyfrenchie December 12, 2012, 3:11 pm

Caitlin, I love your approach to the changes in your body, and think getting back to your per-pregnancy shape in 6 months is great! Also, I am not a mom (yet) but I love reading all your posts and mummy updates.
I love the idea of a play park, especially if your baby is a little “explorer”.
Henry really is getting cuter by the minute! I love that you always seem to find such great outfits for him. Options for little boys seems so limited.
My niece is now 2.5 months and wear 3 to 6 months clothes too! Looks like she’s going to be a big baby lol
Also, thanks for reminding us to appreciate what we have rather than always wishing for more.

  • Reenie December 12, 2012, 3:22 pm

His lil sweater is so cute…. so is he ~ and you look great.

  • Beks December 12, 2012, 3:36 pm

Henry has got some great facial expressions. 🙂

  • MomHTP December 12, 2012, 3:40 pm

What a fun update post. I loved it. Your awareness of all the gifts you have including a healthy baby, healthy body, etc are lovely Gratitude producers and that equals positive emotions which you share with us. Thanks. Henry is precious and so are you.

  • Coco December 12, 2012, 3:46 pm

Hi Catlin, great post!!! I love how thankful you are with Henry’s milestones. if I didn’t have a baby I wouldn’t understand fully what you mean by thankful for all the things Henry is doing and changing.

I am folowing you and loving all baby posts! 🙂

We met in POM tour and it’s amazing that Heather, Gina, you and me all have babies now! 🙂

  • Ashley December 12, 2012, 3:52 pm

What a beautiful post! I think it is so easy to assume that one would automatically would have a child that is able-bodied, but it is really a blessing. You both look so incredibly happy and filled with joy!

  • Jackie December 12, 2012, 3:53 pm

So cute! Isn’t it crazy how it only takes a day or two for them to master a new skill? I also think it’s funny how they will go in & out of new skills (at least my son does). One day he’ll talk a TON, using all kinds of new sounds, and then the next day he won’t talk very much but he’ll work on pulling up/cruising around furniture instead.

  • Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries December 12, 2012, 3:54 pm

I just love reading these updates! He’s getting so big! I love that photo of him standing up in his crib… His little look on his face is too stinkin’ cute!

  • Jessica December 12, 2012, 3:59 pm

Henry is SO adorable! They grow up so fast, don’t they? It’s funny, my BBF has a little boy 7 weeks older than my girl, and he hit all his physical milestones at the same rate as Henry (army crawling, crawling, and pulling up freakishly early, and he started walking in earnest at 9 months). And he still only has two teeth, at a year old!

And I’m sure a ton people will mention this, but girl you’ve got to drop that crib mattress like TODAY! Once they start pulling up you’ve got to move it to the lowest setting, it’s super dangerous with the mattress that high up.

Are you doing baby-wed weaning (it looks like from the picture!)? Any reason why your giving Henry water? My pediatrician said that for breastfed babies the only liquid they should have is breastmilk until a year (although a small quantities of water is good for constipation once they start eating solids in earnest, around 9-10 months usually). We did baby-led weaning starting at 6.5 months and it’s been great, at a year our girl eats literally any vegetable (or any food, really) that we put in front of her – one of her favorite things is curry, and she LOVES eggplant! What do you think of the book? I really liked it and found it to be really helpful (and the safety tips really put my mind at ease, in the beginning I was worried she would choke!).

I love your final paragraph – you’re right, when you’re in good health it is so easy to take it for granted!

    • Caitlin December 12, 2012, 4:03 pm

      Yes def dropping crib today!

Re: water, I read he doesn’t need it but it can be fine for him to have up to two ounces a day at this point if he wants to play with his sippy cup.

      • Jessica December 12, 2012, 4:17 pm

Cool! Our ped must be on the more conservative side about that, then. Since our girl just turned a year old we’ve started giving her a sippy of water to play with and it’s her favorite thing EVER.

  • Stellina @ My Yogurt Addiction.com December 12, 2012, 4:01 pm

I love the last paragraph of this post! I feel like I always want more and sometimes forget about all that I have. It’s kind of like one of those glass half empty or half full things!

    • Brittnie (A Joy Renewed) December 13, 2012, 7:21 am

I agree – love the last paragraph.

My daughter just turned 7 mo and we are having lots of tests run on her right now. She is showing signs of being developmentally delayed in lots of areas although in the last few weeks she is showing improvement. She still cannot even sit up. 🙁 But things could be a lot worse so we continue to count our blessings and just take it one day at a time. We know with support and resources we will be able to handle whatever diagnosis (if there is one) is given.

      • Caitlin December 13, 2012, 8:03 am

Thinking of you! Lots of love sent your way.

  • Cathy December 12, 2012, 4:02 pm

Baby cages for the win! We had one with out oldest and dismantled it way to early with our second. They are life savers. Henry is adorable!

  • Jessica December 12, 2012, 4:08 pm

What makes me nervous about sleep training is that I read that if something happens: teething, a cold, traveling, etc, anything that disrupts a routine at all, you have to start all over again with the crying… I’m not sure I could handle all the crying once, but more than once… yikes. :/

    Any thoughts/advice?

    • Caitlin December 12, 2012, 6:58 pm

i feel like this is something people who are against sleep training tell you to scare you away from it. henry was sick a few nights ago so I cuddled him extra long, give him a mid-night bottle when he woke up, pulled him into bed with me in the morning. no big deal, broke all the ‘rules’ to make him feel better. and then the next night, we were back to normal and he didn’t fight it.

      • Jessica December 13, 2012, 8:11 am

In my opinion, each baby will react differently to sleep training. We did some mild training around 9 months (just helping her learn to fall asleep at night w/out having to nurse to sleep), and every so often we have to re-train. And if you read any mommy forums or message boards, you’ll see tons of people needing to re-train at various times – two of my closest friends did the kind of sleep training Caitlin did and they both had to re-train a number of times (mainly for travel, illness and big milestones). I imagine, Caitlin, you’ll have a better idea a year or two down the road of the overall effect of sleep training, rather than a few weeks in.

    • Hope December 13, 2012, 9:45 am

Colds, teething, growth spurts, etc. can “mess up” sleep training for days or longer. I wouldn’t let stop you from sleep training if that’s what you want to do.

  • Allison December 12, 2012, 4:10 pm

The baby cage is probably great for some families, but before you invest too much, you might want to give it a little time to make sure he is satisfied with it now that he can pull up. My son crawled and pulled himself up the same day (just prior to 6 months). We crated a wall dividing the downstairs in half so he could play within our line of sight, and after 3 days, he stood rattling the “cage” and screaming every time the wall was up. He hated being confined and it was $80.00 for a few days of safe baby play area. In the long run, start baby proofing your house as much as possible for when you won’t stay in the “cage.”

    • Jessica December 12, 2012, 4:49 pm

Another thing to keep in mind is that they’ll have to learn to navigate the house at some point anyways (and you’ll still have to baby-proof the house at some point), why put off the inevitable? We just put a gate at the top and the bottom of the stairs, and then helped our daughter figure out what she should/shouldn’t get into (and through trial and error figured out what we had to move and do besides the obvious baby-proofing like outlet covers and cabinet locks). It worked out really well because we’re now comfortable with her toddling around the downstairs, and she knows what is and isn’t allowed – more work on the front end, but the payoff is worth it, in my opinion.
Plus, once they’re pulling up I don’t really trust those standing “walls” of baby gates to support their weight and not fall over. (And as a PSA – you should securely attach any tippable furniture to the walls once they start to pull up!)

      • Caitlin December 12, 2012, 6:56 pm

        thanks for these tips!!!

    • Hope December 13, 2012, 9:50 am

This is going to make me sound harsh but I’ll say it anyone. Sometimes it’s ok if your kid isn’t satisified with the play yard. I have a small play yard and a play pen and sometimes my son has to be in them so that I can pee or safely put the dishes away, etc. He gets mad, he will scream, but he gets over it. Sometimes he just doesn’t have a choice. I don’t keep him in there for long but sometimes when there is only one parent home it’s necessary. My house is baby proofed really well, too, but sometimes we need the play yard.

      • Hope December 13, 2012, 9:50 am

        Anyone? Oops, I meant anyway.

      • Caitlin December 13, 2012, 9:56 am

        Agreeeee.

What a great post! I love that you are recognizing all of Henry’s changes and accomplishments already. My niece is only a couple weeks older than Henry, and I haven’t seen her since August. I am SO exited to see all her changes when I see her in a week or two.

  • Hayley @ Running on Pumpkin December 12, 2012, 4:35 pm

It’s so great that you realized how blessed you are that Henry is healthy and appreciate the little things he is able to do. My mom’s first child (my brother) was born with cerebral palsy and later with my sister and I, she would bawl every time we did something a “normal” baby should do. Having him taught her to not take for granted having a child that is simply just healthy. I hope to do the same when I start having my own babies.

    • Caitlin December 12, 2012, 6:57 pm

🙁 i’m sorry about your brother. hugs.

    • Christena December 12, 2012, 7:54 pm

I just had to comment when I saw this story — my heart went out to your mom. We don’t even realize how many things we have to be thankful for.

    • Liza December 13, 2012, 11:09 am

My sister-in-law has CP as well. Becoming part of their family really opened my eyes to just how lucky I am to have working legs, the ability to feed myself and use the bathroom alone, to have children and fall in love (not that she can’t fall in love but she has very few opportunities since she lives at home with her mom and has few friends). I don’t know how she does it but she is so positive about her life (and her life has not been easy, aside from her disability even). How is your brother now?

  • Kristy @ Kristy's Health Revolution December 12, 2012, 4:38 pm

Is Henry ridiculous expressive always, or are you just really really good at capturing it on film when he is? Those facial expressions! I can’t handle it!

      he is ridiculously expressive LOL

  • Kendra @ My Full-Thyme Life December 12, 2012, 5:14 pm

Awesome post, Caitlin! You are so right about the miracle of having a healthy baby. It is something I certainly don’t take for granted either, especially with a mother-in-law that teaches special education at the elementary level and says our 20 month old son is more advanced than some of her kiddos. Becoming pregnant, having a healthy full-term pregnancy, a successful delivery, and a healthy baby to boot are all miracles!

Henry is a rock star and I can feel your pride through the words in your post. Isn’t it just the best thing in the world to be a mama? 🙂

I LOVE Henry pictures. Is he always so animated or do you just post the more animated/goofy faces on the blog? I love his funny faces!!!

  • Lauren December 12, 2012, 8:26 pm

Hi Caitlin! I rarely post (but always read!) and as a speech-language pathologist I wanted to say that Henry probably won’t really begin to truly “talk” until he is closer to 1 year. Right now he is most likely doing reduplicated babbling and he is right on target! It doesn’t truly count as talking until there is communicative intent recognizes by an unfamiliar listener…like if you are at trader joes and someone else hears him say mom as he looks at you. It seems like he is doing well with developmental milestones so you have much to be grateful for!

This kid has the most AMAZING faces! That picture of him in the crib is priceless, truly. I love these posts because it’s like a window into where my daughter will be in 6 weeks. Its funny how babies all move through the same milestones, but in different orders and during different weeks. It’s fun to compare!

  • Emily B December 13, 2012, 7:32 am

I REALLY need to stop reading these posts because I’ve had baby fever since I was sixteen (no I didn’t actually give in to the stupidity, everyone) and when I look at those photos of Henry at age 21 it’s five times as bad 🙁 He’s so special and sooooo lucky to have a mummy like you!! I know it may be seen as superficial to say this but I cannot tell you’ve carried a baby with that figure. I thought I’d let you know that Dada is a lot easier to say than Muma (it requires a lot less diction) so you should never be offended if he starts saying the paternal name first, that’s not to say that he won’t say Mama first but I thought I’d let you know. I said Dada first and I’m closer to Mum.

You’re beautiful, Caitlin – motherhood makes it stand out even more <3

Henry is so cute! My baby is 4 months old he is working so hard at rollling from his back to stomach! It makes me so proud to see him work so hard and you can really see his little brain trying to undestand the concept.
It is funny that you wrote about having less crying. I HATE when Bas crys..my husband is much more patient with him when he crys then me..it just puts me on edge. Yesterday we were out and Bas was crying because he hates his carseat and an elderly man said that is a Beautiful noise….and if you think about it …It really is!!! Cheesy but true.

I’m no where near being a momma, but I didn’t think it was too crazy of momma speak! I like the updates and think Henry is adorable!! Congratulations!

You two are just too precious. I love your approach of appreciating the health of your baby- you’re so right! I need to read and remember things like that more often!

The picture of him standing in the crib is awesome! And the cardigan he is wearing in the last one, gah! You and Henry just sent my baby fever into overdrive!

Happy 6- months to Henry!!!!! Time sure does fly. 🙂 I actually feel the same way as you about being grateful. I was just telling Denny last week how many friends of mine are struggling and how blessed we are.

I like your blog, your posts, the way you handle things with simplicity and confidence.

He makes my heart melt every time!
By the way, my jaw dropped when you said it’s been 6 months! It’s scary how quickly a half a year or a year go by. You are doing amazing!

  • Miriam December 13, 2012, 4:19 pm

He is so cute!! And he makes the best faces!! Also truly look like a mix of you two 🙂

This might be a dumb question…but how long did it take for you to feel not pregnant? Or for the pregnancy specific symptoms to go away, rather? I am 36 weeks, and I am just terrified that all the things that are bothering me (heartburn, restless leg syndrome, having trouble standing and rolling over, pain walking, sore feet, swelling) won’t go away postpartum. Or that I’ll be so miserable from the delivery/sleep deprivation, that I won’t even care/notice that these have gone away.

I guess my main question is – did it feel nice to not be pregnant anymore, or did recovering from the delivery just prolong the physical uncomfortableness of the third trimester?

I wonder if he prefers the army crawl because of your little dogs running around him, like maybe he’s imitating the way they move, because they’re so close to the ground!

      Hahahahah mAybe!

It is amazing how fast they start hitting milestones, I feel like my little guy went from crawling to walking so quick. He started crawling at just over 6 months and is taking max 20 steps alone at 9.5 months. Love the playmat I wish I had known about those, we have a bright colored one sitting in our livingg room.

Funny story for you, TJ loves hunting our cats. We have baby gates with cat doors. He goes throigh the cat door at the bottom of the stairs, but gets stuck because of his cloth diaper.he tries so hard to go up its hilarious.

Little Henry is too cute! Thanks for sharing all his milestones with us. 🙂

Well sister, can I just say, motherhood really becomes you. I think every time I see a pic of you and your little guy I think ‘omg, she just looks so gorgeous’.

My son is a few days older than yours and even though he is my second, he is the complete opposite of my first so I am really enjoying all the different developmental stages. My first didn’t feel the urge to crawl so he rolled a lot and my second only wants to move FORWARD and spent so many weeks rocking on his hands and knees…finally crawling! My first focused on moving and getting places, my second is focused on talking. My first didn’t care much for food (he laughed the first time I offered it like, ‘what? you think I want something other than your boobie?’ and my second eats ANYTHING and everything I put in front of him with extreme gusto.

My Henry is six days younger than yours and is not babbling yet…so hearing about your sweet boy suddenly chatting up a storm is VERY encouraging!

    • Caitlin December 30, 2012, 10:21 am

He just started to do it and only says g and some b noises but mostly gs 🙂
