Goodbye ‘12

in All Posts

Last night, I unplugged and slipped into a bubble bath.  Complete with many running magazines to flip through and enjoy (and get soaking wet).

If you look closely, you can see Henry gnaw marks on the edge of one magazine… Eek.

And on the last morning of 2012, we took Henry to the doctor for his six-month check-up.

Henry is officially 16 pounds, 6 ounces.  A little squirt (20% for weight) with some height (50% for height).  What he lacks in heft he makes up for in motor development… he’s literally off the charts, which is pretty cool (and exhausting now that he can crawl oh-so-fast).  These skill do not come from me.  I am so clumsy!  Kristien, on the other hand, is literally a hand-eye coordination freak of nature (case in point).

I’m looking forward to feeding Henry more solids in the next few months (I have a post about this coming soon), as well as watching him learn how to really walk.  He can stand up by himself for a few seconds now, and he can walk if he is holding onto something with one hand, but no true steps.  Yet.

I took a quick look at my Google Reader this morning and saw that everyone is penning beautiful and inspiring posts about the best of 2012 and their goals for 2013.  I have no such post prepared.  I look back over 2012 and all I can think is:  Baby.  New clinic.  Bought a house.  Published two books.  Happy but exhausted!

I attempted to end 2012 with a new recipe – Monkey Bread.  Gluten-free and Vegan Monkey Bread, to be exact.

I had high hopes (it smelled amazing in the oven!) but alas – it just didn’t work.

It wasn’t even ‘good enough to eat, not good enough for the blog.’  It went straight in the trash!  Oh well.  Maybe next time.

We don’t need the big recap post (personnaly I don’t like them), I prefer that kind of funny post, with a recipe that didn’t work 🙂

That’s too bad about the bread, but yay Henry! That’s great he has such good motor skills!

You’ve had a great year baby! and a great baby year, and a baby great year. At least Henry is on the chart. Our kids were both at 50% height and -3% weight until they were 2 years old. Not even on the chart! If he’s not at a negative percentage then he’s fine.

Keep working on that monkey bread recipe because it sounds AMAZING!

    What a great year!
As FTM of a 6 month old, Henry’s motor skills blow my mind. My little 13 lb peanut is still working on sitting up by herself!

Have a great 2013! I think your summary of the year in a sentence can suffice for all the changes you had!

I think you have every right to be content just where you are Caitlin! It’s been such a huge year for you. I’m not sure what your new years plans are but I hope you have a fun and relaxing one – you deserve it!

      You too!

So…I’m slightly confused because babies are supposed to double their birth weight by 6 months and it sounds like he was on or around there. Also, 16 pounds+ is a decent size for a 6 month old. Sorry, pediatric nurse here is confused. 😉 His motor skills sound amazing though, very very advanced! You have a cool kid 🙂

    • Caitlin December 31, 2012, 10:08 pm

I guess other kiddos are bigger by 6 monta? He was 6 11 at birth.

  • Christine @ BookishlyB December 31, 2012, 8:13 pm

“May next year be better than the last”- good, simple advice. Happy new year!

Your 2012 was awesome. I’m just hoping I can make 2013 an awesome year. My family has a history of babies being born in years that end in 3 (’83 represent!) . And I want to fulfill my part (step around the part where my husband and I have been trying since ’06). I am determined to make this year a year of changes, (no matter what happens) and a year where I stop using so many damn parentheses (not yet!) 😉

Henry is amazingly ahead of the charts with crawling so young! My good friend also has a small baby who started walking around 8/9 months, I think in part because he has less mass to move around. 😉

I’ve got a dumb question, was the doctor at all concerned about the discrepancy between height/weight? I’ve got a small baby (always around the 20th percentile for height/weight) and my doctor always reassures us by saying that it’s not important what the percentiles are, your baby could be 5th percentile or 100th percentile as long as the height and weight are close to each other; that it’s only an issue if the height and weight are very different percentiles. Maybe because Henry’s crawling so early he’s burning much more calories than other baby’s his age? I know that when my daughter started crawling she started eating a TON of solids, started nursing more at night, etc. to compensate.

Doc said as long as its within 30 points it’s NBD. I think h may have inherited the husbands body type. Lucky him!!
