{Vlog} Why Do You Run?

in Zooma

ZOOMA recently forwarded me this YouTube video:  Why Do You Run?  I thought I’d do a vlog (video blog) answering this question because I found it so intriguing.

Check it out to not only hear my thoughts on why I run, but also to ooo and ahhh at Henry’s cute little old man cardigan.

Best… video… still… ever.

The best part of that video is how Henry shreds my hair the entire time, and I barely notice because I am so used to the painful sensation now.  I thought about re-shooting sans baby-hair-shredder, but I like to do vlogs in one shot.  Regardless, I am going to be bald by the time he is two.

So – why do you run? What does running give you?  (PS – If you’re a blogger and want to do your own vlog about why you run, post it and e-mail me the link at caitlinjboyle@gmail.com – I’ll link to it on this post!)

Okay, gotta be honest here. I could hear you in the background, but I was a bit too busy watching Henry, the cutie, to really hear what you were saying. lol

    • Caitlin November 7, 2012, 2:40 pm

      he says thanks!

  • Christine @ BookishlyB November 7, 2012, 2:52 pm

I used to run because it was the most “bang for your buck” calories wise and because I wanted to prove to everyone else (and myself) that I could run a half marathon. And then I realized it was a huge chore and I was burnt out so I’ve phased it out. I think sometimes why you run is as important as why you stop.

  • Alexa @ The Girl In Chucks November 7, 2012, 2:53 pm

    That pony tail didn’t stand a chance…

    • Kristy November 7, 2012, 9:33 pm

That’s what I was thinking! LOL

  • Stellina @ My Yogurt Addiction.com November 7, 2012, 3:03 pm

I run because I can! Because it makes me feel great, because I think about those who can’t and wish that they could…because although sometimes I hate it… I never, ever regret it! 🙂

I run to be healthy and for my sanity. It is my time to get out there and clear my head. Some days it is relaxing and freeing but some days it is just down right hard. But no matter what, I always feel like a million bucks knowing that I got out there and did it.

    BTW…Henry is a cutie pie!

Loved your vlog, and I love how you qualified that “being strong” isn’t always physical! I remember going for a run when I was young and living in a dysfunctional home just to get out of the house, to make my own decisions, and to control my own destiny – it was me and the road, and the only thing standing in the way of my goal was me. If I wanted to run, I could, or if I wanted to sit on the side of the road and cry and feel sorry for myself, I could do that too. That choice was mine and no one else’s. That was – and is – the part about it that I still love.

Plus, when I don’t run – like now (@#^#! shin splints!!) – I still dream about running, about going the distance, about the way I feel after a long run. Love it. Once a runner, always a runner.

    Also: Henry is too cute!

Henry is such a handsome little man…it has been fun watching him grow so much through your blog!
So why I run….I run to get away from it all….to take away the stress of the day…to feel that sense of accomplishment after a long run.

  • Claire November 7, 2012, 4:26 pm

I love your vlog – I developed tarsal tunnel syndrome in both ankles a few years ago and that ended my running career. I still miss it almost every day!

Henry is just too cute for words! I hate to be one of those “just you wait…” kind of moms, but the hair/glasses/jewelry pulling, and pinching, grabbing, and poking just gets more and more intense as they get older! I know now why so many moms go for the “mom haircut”, just to keep it out of reach from little grabby hands! You become impervious to it after awhile. 🙂

Why I run is an amazing question, and I think for me it is to focus in on life. There are so many days where my brain seems to be in another world. With one run, I’m able to come back to reality. What it gives me is a sense of accomplishment, and that I am able to motivate myself to do such a wonderful and personal event throughout my day, week, month, etc.

  • colleen November 7, 2012, 4:50 pm

I run because I can! Plus it gives me a chance to clear my head from daily events.

  • Stephanie @ Food and Fitness 4 Real November 7, 2012, 5:06 pm

I run because it gives me time to think through my problems or to help me clear my mind of the daily clutter. Running has always been a great stress reliever and it the perfect “me time” for mommies who need to exercise AND get a break from taking care of the kids. Henry is too cute in this video, he is not giving up on trying to eat your hair.

  • Kate November 7, 2012, 5:06 pm

Like everyone else here – running is a moment to take myself out of the moment. I think, I feel good during (most of the time..) and afterwards, and it de-stresses the heck out of me. Not to mention the slight runners’ high can be a bonus!

  • Hillary November 7, 2012, 5:24 pm

I think about this a lot, actually. I run for my health and to maintain my weight loss, but I also run to clear my mind, relieve stress, have “me” time, challenge myself…the list goes on and on!

  • Sarah November 7, 2012, 5:47 pm

Totally agree – running is good for your soul!

  • Katie @ Peace Love & Oats November 7, 2012, 5:47 pm

A lot of people thought I was crazy for running the Chicago marathon, but for me, running is something that makes me feel confident, it’s “me” time, it’s my mental release and my time to either zone out or think and reflect. The endorphins don’t hurt either!

  • Abby November 7, 2012, 6:36 pm

Running gives me a break from the million things moms have to do every day!
And I love the feeling of accomplishment after I’m done!
My daughter is a hair shredder too! I thought cutting my hair in to a bob would stop her but now she just grabs from the top of my head haha

  • Lee November 7, 2012, 6:41 pm

I run to prove that I can. When I was a teenager and in my early 20’s, I was chubby and I never thought I could run more than a mile. At some point, I decided to prove that I could and I kept proving it.

I also run to get rid of anxiety. I just feel better after (not always during!) a run.

  • Stacia November 7, 2012, 6:55 pm

I kinda hate running but I do it because I can. I didn’t used to be able to but now I can and I ran my first full mile a couple months ago. I never had before in my whole life!

  • brooke @ sweats & sweets November 7, 2012, 7:19 pm

I run to go numb. Thats an odd answer, but let me explain. I enjoy tuning everything out and just focusing on me and only me. During my runs I am not dealing with other people’s problem’s or the stress from my day. I just go numb with emotion and I feel like I just…float. Its an uplifting feeling that clears my head and centers my soul.

  • Katie November 7, 2012, 7:25 pm

I run to feel proud of myself. Everytime I finish a run I am truly amazed at my body. I used to think I could never run… and once I got started it was like my body knew what to do!!

  • Marie-Santé November 7, 2012, 7:26 pm

Remember Team Hoyt? I started running seriously 3 years ago and whenever someone ask me «why», that was my go-to answer: «Because I can!»
I ran my first marathon last September and I think for the first time, the «I can» took all it’s meaning. Since that race, my anxiety is back to an acceptable level, witch means no more insomnia, no more binge eating out of stress and no more anxiety phase where I’m the worst person to be around. I think finally -finally!- my mind has accepted that I actually can do a lot of things when I put my mind into it. Just one day at the time! So running is for me a way to enjoy the journey that life is.
Thanks for sharing a bit of Henry, he is such a cute baby and it’s fun to see you in action!

  • deb November 7, 2012, 7:28 pm

I run because it’s time I get to think about me things, not mommy things or wife things. Also so I can be healthy and a good positive role model for my daughter!

  • Angela @ Happy Fit Mama November 7, 2012, 7:59 pm

I frequently get asked this and my response is always for ME. It’s my ME time but it’s also a time for me to feel like I can do anything with hard work and determination. Like you said, I may not be the fastest and I’m not going to be winning any trophies, but I’m constantly pushing myself out of my comfort zone to see what I can do. Our bodies were meant for movement so why not?

  • Katie @ Talk Less, Say More November 7, 2012, 9:13 pm

Man, Henry sure WAS tugging at your pony tail!

But to answer your question, I run for the same reason – strength. Running is really my time to release stress and focus on ME which builds up my mental and emotional strength. It’s really powerful to me.

  • Marissa C November 8, 2012, 12:16 am

    Your baby is super cute.

Also, I’ve heard your voice in videos before, but every time it catches me off guard. I just expect you to sound different for some reason. I have no idea why!

  • Carrie November 8, 2012, 12:24 am

There are things I run for and things I run from. I run to clear my head, feel better about myself, my sanity, get my heart rate up, overall well being. I run from stress, worries, fears, insecurities, work deadlines, heart ache. I always joke that some girls give in to retail therapy when stressed while I lace up my Nikes and take it out on the pavement. Running is so much more to me than a physical activity : )

  • Carrie @ The Cook's Palette November 8, 2012, 2:37 am

Oh my gosh, I was cracking up the entire time! Henry was adorably distracting. I run because it’s when I can just let go. It’s my time to think and process everything that is going on in my life. I don’t know how far I will go or how long it will take me. I simply relish in the freedom and enjoy.

  • Michele Albert November 8, 2012, 8:07 am

Henry is adorable, I love that he shredded your braid in less than five minutes!

  • Whitney November 8, 2012, 8:40 am

I run because I like being competitive with myself. I played basketball through college and loved the competitive nature of it. After college, just going to the gym and doing random workouts was not keeping me motivated. I stumbled upon a local 5k and I was hooked. I love following training plans and seeing how they affect my times in races.

I also love the running community. It makes me so happy to see so many like-minded individuals up at the crack of dawn getting ready to race! 🙂

  • Karen B November 8, 2012, 9:49 am

You and henry both are adorable. Just grab a toy/teether before you sit down. Love your new cat, he’s very photogenic!

    • Caitlin November 8, 2012, 9:57 am

      he normally has one!

  • Tammy Root November 8, 2012, 10:41 am

No offense Caitlin, but Henry was the star of that video. ;)))))

  • Lauren @ The Homeostatic Mindset November 8, 2012, 11:51 am

I run because it’s FUN!!! Just thinking about going for a run gets me all giddy…I’m like a dog going for a walk haha. But seriously, me, my music, outside in the fresh air- life is good 🙂

  • Lisa in IL November 8, 2012, 3:45 pm

Someone asked my at dinner over the weekend how I “got into running?”. It took me a moment but I answered, I didn’t get into running, running got into me. That’s the only way I can explain it. I started out walking half a mile in flip-flops with my dog & my friend. Five years later it’s just me out there by myself.

  • Lesley November 9, 2012, 6:51 am

Running is a great time for me to sort out my thoughts from the day, break a sweat and have some girl time when I’m with a running partner!
