Brunch Munch at 5 Church

Kitty says thanks for the warm welcome!

Her adoption story is coming soon, but for now – she’s living in the master bathroom and bedroom, trying to adjust to her new space.  She’s a pretty fearless kitty – with two BB pellets in her hip to prove it – so I’m confident she’ll be roaming the house shortly.

We said our goodbyes to the zoo house and drove to 5 Church.  They invited me out to give a little review of their new brunch menu.  I really love the décor of this restaurant but have never seen it in the daylight!  It’s usually more of a hip evening place.  Too swanky for words (if you’re ever in Charlotte, it’s a really great dinner spot).  So I was curious to try their breakfast.

Ghost chairs for the win.

Every time that I’m at 5 Church, I wonder how the heck they got The Art of War (at least, I think it’s The Art of War) up on the ceiling.  My arms ache just looking at it.

I ordered from the a la carte menu so I could try as many things as possible.

Thoughts?  Everything was great.  Fresh with unique spins.  The home fries, for example, were really well done.  The menu was full of interesting brunch dishes – lamb burger, homemade vanilla yogurt, breakfast flat bread – and there was a whole list of yummy adult brunch drinks (hey, this restaurant is in Uptown, after all).

Henry took his morning nap while we ate, giving us some much-needed adult alone time.  Thanks, kiddo.

Aaaaand then we spent the rest of the day working at the clinic.  The relaxation was nice while it lasted.

Off to go pet the kitty-cat.  Have a wonderful Sunday!

I’m interested to hear about how this adoption took place! That restaurant sounds amazing, and if I lived in Charlotte I would head over there quickly to check it out. YUM!

  • Cindy November 4, 2012, 5:15 pm

She is gorgeous! I can’t wait to read the adoption story. 🙂

Congrats on the kitty adoption! We have three of them here along wit our Aussie which can get pretty crazy but so much love in the house 🙂 beautiful cat. Can’t wait to hear about her story and how she gets along with canine siblings 🙂 and Henry if course!

    Bless that poor kitty!!!

I hope this isn’t morbid, but since you said she was a girl, and she has BB pellets in her, might I suggest the name BeBe?

Again, I hope that isn’t offensive to anyone.

A long time ago my husband came across a beautiful and sweet black lab that had been shot 3 times. All of the wounds were non-fatal. We doctored her up and the husband named her “Target”.

    • Caitlin November 4, 2012, 6:03 pm

i think its a tough girl name!

      • Rebecca November 4, 2012, 7:18 pm

My aunt and uncle have a dog named Mocha. I’m pretty sure she was found outside a coffee shop or something. Love when names are inspired by stories. 🙂

My cats named Bebe! Great name!

        • Laura November 4, 2012, 11:36 pm

I was thinking the same thing re: BeBe! Great name 🙂

i can’t wait to hear the adoption story of your beautiful kitty! i am a cat lady through and through so any kitty face makes me awww(:

Sweet kitty! She is beautiful! Do her a favour and feed her wet food…it’s what her little body is meant to eat. The cheapest wet food is better for her than the most expensive dry food. Dry food is definitely more convenient for us pet owners to throw down, but kitties are meant to eat meat, not grains (sorry, I know you’re a vegetarian!)

    • Margaret November 4, 2012, 7:20 pm

I second this. I actually am vegetarian too, but feed my cat raw meat (Rad Cat brand – it actually looks a lot less gross than canned food in my opinion), but if for some reason that weren’t an option, I’d at least use wet canned food as the main part of her diet. Cats are used to getting most of their water from their food (eating small animals), so they don’t naturally have a drive to drink enough water. A dry diet leads to a higher likelihood of kidney disease. My parents have had two cats die of kidney disease, my sister’s cat was recently diagnosed… and these cats are/were fed almost entirely dry food.

Unlike dogs, who are omnivores and can do fine on almost anything, cats are definite carnivores, and need a meat-based diet, not filled with grains or by-products as the primary ingredients.

      • Sonia the mexigarian November 4, 2012, 8:06 pm

Good to know. I feed my cats wet food off and on, but never knew about the kidney disease 🙁

I second this! This is a very resourceful website about the importance of wet food with lots of analysis of different brand can foods, as well. http://www.catinfo.org

  • Natalie @ Free Range Human November 4, 2012, 6:42 pm

The food looks good! I second that feeling-I can’t imagine anyone doing that on the ceiling! Michelanglo much!?

  • lisa fine November 4, 2012, 6:52 pm

Aw, she’s such a pretty cat! I’m curious to hear how she and the dogs and Henry all get along.

And that brunch place sounds really good. I love going out for brunch.

  • Shelly November 4, 2012, 6:59 pm

Fun fact: I actually ate at 5 Church last night for dinner and my boyfriend asked the owner (the guy sitting at the bar on the laptop in your first picture of the restaurant) how long it took to write all that. He said it took the artist 3 and a half months on a ladder to finish it! Crazy! My neck hurts just thinking about having to look up that long! And yes, it is The Art of War 🙂

  • Rebecca November 4, 2012, 7:19 pm

Awwww, pretty kitty! I’ve been wanting a cat for a long time now. Maybe in a few years…
Can’t wait to read the adoption story! Hope she and the dogs are adjusting to each other okay!

    Hi Caitlin-
I’ve been reading since you were See Bride Run, but have never felt compelled to comment until I saw my kitty’s doppelganger staring at me from my computer monitor. I’m really interested to hear the adoption story and can only hope that your little grey and white bundle of love is as good to you and your family as mine is to us.

    • Caitlin November 4, 2012, 8:07 pm

Aw thanks for reading for so long!

  • Reenie November 4, 2012, 8:39 pm

The animal lover in me is coming out—I just can’t believe someone would shoot that poor cat with a BB gun! 🙁

So glad you are giving her a loving home!

  • Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin November 5, 2012, 7:59 am

    Aw she’s cute!

And that brunch place looks great. I’m really intrigued by the homemade vanilla yogurt – I don’t think I’ve ever seen a restaurant make their own yogurt before!

    Hi Caitlin,

I just stumbled on this post when I was searching for 5 Church. Definitely glad I found your post and review on their brunch menu because I had no idea they even served brunch! Dinner there is awesome, so I can only imagine how great their brunch would be!
