Picture Perfect

in Design and Decorating, House

If you recall, immediately after we moved into our new house, the air conditioning system blew.  Suffice it to say that replacing an AC is extremely expensive.  Three cheers for homeownership, right?  Fixing the AC ate away our fun ‘decorate the house’ money we had diligently been saving for months.  Some rooms of our house are still pretty empty.  But we’re slowly working on it.

Today, I hung family pictures that I had finally gotten framed.

These were from our maternity shoot with New Shoe Photography (here are the rest of the pictures!).

Choosing the frame was really hard – I went to a local place called Frame Warehouse, and I was glad that I did because I went in thinking I wanted one type of frame (big and white) and that was so wrong.  The clerk taught me that…

  • For one, the two frames didn’t have to match because the frame is really about the picture itself – and that’s more important than matching all the frames in one hallway.
  • White frames usually look horrible with the black and white photographs because the whites clash.
  • Texture and sheen in the frame can be used to pick up colors and shading in the photograph.
  • Your eye will be automatically drawn to whatever element in the picture matches the color of the frame itself.

After getting the 411 on picture framing, I stood with Henry in my arms, talking to the clerk about my final selection.  And then… Henry proceeded to (loudly) go potty, which resulted in a major, messy diaper leak.  All over Henry.  All over me.  Clerk couldn’t keep a straight face.  This is a true story, my friends.

One costume change later, I ended up layering a textured brownish black frame with a silver inner frame (in lieu of a mat).  Pretty!

Our house looks more like a home now.

Up next:  printing a few of Henry’s newborn photographs.  I’m torn between these three:

Baby Boyle [LR] 34

Baby Boyle [LR] 54

Baby Boyle [LR] 32

Thoughts on which one I should get printed?

Oh and for dinner, I made more of the Zucchini Quiche Cornbread.  I added sweet white onion to the egg mix and it was even better than the original recipe.  Yum.

Good night!

His expression in #1 is amazing.

  • hippierunner September 4, 2012, 10:12 pm

All the pics look stunning. The captured action (that adorable yawn!) of the 3rd one is really great!

  • Kelly September 4, 2012, 10:15 pm

    I love the yawn!!

  • Caitlin September 4, 2012, 10:16 pm

I absolutely love your photographer. Every picture you post or link is beyond amazing and stunning. Doesn’t hurt that the photographer’s subjects are adorable and beautiful! When I reach that point in my life where I need/want professional photographs, I will definitely be making the trip from Richmond to Charlotte or paying for New Shoe to come to me. (love the framing tips from to framing store, never thought or heard of any of those before!)

And I’m no help with choosing a Henry photo, they’re all great and capture such different expressions and atmospheres!

    • Caitlin September 4, 2012, 10:18 pm

What a nice compliment for Jen. I will be sure she sees this!

      • Caitlin September 4, 2012, 10:41 pm

Please do! She needs to know how awesome she is!

        • Jen at New Shoe September 4, 2012, 10:52 pm

You are so kind! Are you sure you’re not my mom in disguise? 😉 Thanks for the compliment. Having such a sweet family to photograph makes it easy. I’d love to photograph you whenever you’re ready. And I love Richmond. Spent many nights in Shockoe Bottom when I traveled there for work years ago!

          • Caitlin September 5, 2012, 12:04 pm

100% promise, cross my heart and pinky swear, I’m not your mom. :p I truely find your work stunning, beautiful, and just down right captivating. After Caitlin posted the maternity photos, they were the first of your photos I’d ever seen, I had to investigate who had created such gorgeous art. After exploring your website, I immeadiately had to bookmark it so that I can get in touch with you in the future to set up a session or two. I’m glad you ditched the office life to follow your true passions because you definitely found your calling!

Richmond would be glad to have you back for a visit! I’ve spent my fair share of nights in the bottom as well like most Rixhmonders, always entertaining to say the least. Haha. Hope you guys have a great day and Jen, please don’t ever stop creating your impressive photographs!

            Caitlin

  • Lindsay @ Fuel My Family September 4, 2012, 10:17 pm

Print Number 1, I love it! Such a sweet little look on his face!

  • Katrina September 4, 2012, 10:18 pm

Adding my vote for the first one!

Frame shopping is hard without kids. I can only imagine the added difficulty with kids. 🙂 But looks like it was worth it, the framed pictures look awesome!

  • northofthe49th September 4, 2012, 10:20 pm

    Henry #3!

  • Chelsea September 4, 2012, 10:26 pm

    I vote for #1 or #3 – they’re both adorable! 🙂

  • Trish September 4, 2012, 10:26 pm

I vote Henry #1. Very cute!

  • Katy September 4, 2012, 10:27 pm

    The first one!

  • Jameil September 4, 2012, 10:33 pm

    #1!

  • Brittnie (A Joy Renewed) September 4, 2012, 10:35 pm

    I love the first picture!

Ok I feel ya. . . yesterday at church I had to take my 4 month old out because she was fussing. I took her to the bathroom for a diaper change. As soon as I changed her diaper she pooed again. Then she proceeded to sling her paci out of her mouth and into the toilet. Yes. The toilet. (changing station was in an actual stall). Then as we are leaving the restroom I have her up on my shoulder and she spits up ALL down my cami and into my bra. Awesome. 🙂

  • Lisa September 4, 2012, 10:35 pm

Thanks for the recipe! Can I suggest putting the milk and eggs in a blender and add a squirt of mustard and a garlic clove? The blending gives the quiche a yummy fluffy texture and garlic and mustard gives the egg base a great taste!

  • Jen September 4, 2012, 10:40 pm

Get one of those frames that allows you to frame three photos… or have them matted as 3 separate photos in one frame. They are all too cute, how do you choose?

  • emily September 4, 2012, 10:43 pm

    I vote for the yawn!

  • Nina September 4, 2012, 10:43 pm

    I’m a definite for number 1!

  • Jen at New Shoe September 4, 2012, 10:45 pm

The prints look great Caitlin! I love the frames you chose. My favorite is the yawn. Such a sweet little moment. He is so stinkin’ cute. Enjoy this time. I just dropped my 3 year old off at preschool today. The past 3 years just flew by!

  • Amanda September 4, 2012, 10:45 pm

I love the first and third ones. The commenter above me said you could look into getting them framed side by side. That would be super cute, even though all of them are! =)

  • Janelle September 4, 2012, 10:46 pm

    # 1!!!

  • Lee September 4, 2012, 10:53 pm

    I like #1 and #3.

  • Diane T. Your Auntie. September 4, 2012, 10:55 pm

I am definitely outvoted but I think he’s aregular Master Personality in 2. How about all three, with your favorite larger in the middle. The frame could be square or oblong. Whichever you can’t lose with Henry as your subject !

    • Jen September 5, 2012, 12:11 am

Ohhh…I love this idea!!! I couldn’t pick just one…they are all just SO precious (and capture different sides of his personality)! 🙂

  • Kristy September 4, 2012, 10:59 pm

The third pic of Henry is my fav! So friggin’ cute! Also- I must say that I adore the pic of your pups!

  • Stacy September 4, 2012, 11:06 pm

The first picture! Definitely! It is so cute!

  • Jenna September 4, 2012, 11:07 pm

I’m a sucker for baby yawns, so I say #3.

#1!! (Love the ones you’ve framed and hung by the way!)

  • Reenie September 4, 2012, 11:21 pm

    Love them all…. but I say Henry #1. =)

  • Corrie Anne September 4, 2012, 11:23 pm

Thanks for reminding me! I have to make that quiche!! Such sweet pictures.. I’m a sucker for dog pics especially!

  • Elisabeth September 4, 2012, 11:25 pm

    Love the last one!

  • Marissa C September 4, 2012, 11:30 pm

#3 for sure. What an adorable yawn!

Curious…did you guys get a home warranty and did you try and have them cover the A/C?

I’m convinced they are total crap.

  • Ashley Y September 4, 2012, 11:42 pm

I have no idea which picture I would choose. My husband and I both see your dilemma! I like 2 and 3 the most if I have to narrow it down. I cannot narrow down to just one though. Good luck!

  • Samantha September 4, 2012, 11:48 pm

    The yawn! It’s so sweet.

  • Verlin September 4, 2012, 11:51 pm

If I had to choose, I’d say #3 – that yawn is so cute. #1 is my second choice, but #2 is great too, so you really can’t lose!

  • Stef September 4, 2012, 11:53 pm

    The yawn is so cute!

  • Bree September 4, 2012, 11:55 pm

I think I’m partial to the yawn, but you can’t go wrong with any of them.

    I vote for #1, it’s so sweet!

  • Jen September 5, 2012, 12:18 am

LOVE all of these pictures – the framed ones and the “candidates!” Also love your Auntie’s idea! Glad you had a good time frame shopping, but sorry to hear about the diaper explosion. Ahhh…the joys of motherhood! 🙂

  • Lauren @ SassyMolassy September 5, 2012, 12:47 am

I love the framed pics. #1 and #3 are my favs. Just the look of Henry and all the colors in Kristien’s shirt!

  • Katya September 5, 2012, 12:53 am

    I vote pic #1!

  • Allison@commitcomplete September 5, 2012, 12:54 am

    I vote number one!

  • Katie @ Talk Less, Say More September 5, 2012, 1:23 am

Henry #1. He looks like he’s deep in thought about something.

  • Melissa September 5, 2012, 1:40 am

  • Jacqueline September 5, 2012, 3:18 am

i vote for print all 3!

  • Cait @ Beyond Bananas September 5, 2012, 5:54 am

LOVE those pictures. Our wedding pictures just came back and I am having THE hardest time deciding which pictures I want to have printed and framed. There are just too many to choose from!

  • GDadHTP September 5, 2012, 6:12 am

    #2!

  • Erin September 5, 2012, 6:13 am

    I love your pictures.

I vote for #2 of Henry. He has a great little look on his face. Makes me wonder what he is pondering – something deep no doubt!

  • Coco September 5, 2012, 6:52 am

    I say print number 1#

  • Jillian September 5, 2012, 7:00 am

I’m going against the grain here… I love #2 and can just picture it on the wall.

  • Brynn September 5, 2012, 7:31 am

I like #2 because he looks so happy. #1 is great too!

    # 1 !!!!

  • Amber @ Busy, Bold, Blessed September 5, 2012, 7:55 am

  • Verna September 5, 2012, 8:03 am

I vote for the fist picture.

I vote for picture one or three!

  • Molly @ RDexposed September 5, 2012, 8:36 am

Most definitely the first one if any!

  • Erin September 5, 2012, 8:39 am

    Totally pic #1!

  • Julie September 5, 2012, 8:44 am

Love the frame! & I’m very partial to #1 of Hen 🙂

  • Sara September 5, 2012, 8:50 am

    2nd or 3rd!

  • Nadine September 5, 2012, 8:51 am

I really like #2, but in black and white. I think the plaid in 1 and 3 is distracting–but if they were in black and white, the plaid might melt to the background.

  • Stellina @ My Yogurt Addiction September 5, 2012, 9:09 am

Love Love Love the photos! I feel like family photos are what makes a house a home!

  • Shannon September 5, 2012, 9:11 am

I think you should print #1 and #3 and do them side by side in matching frames. Adorable!

  • ash September 5, 2012, 9:14 am

    #1 so cute!

  • Maren September 5, 2012, 9:36 am

oh man I have to say the first one! I love them all though. We had to replace our AC this summer less than a month after we moved in! ugh… oh and three days after we booked our honeymoon…Really?! We almost cancelled our honeymoon, but then decided you only get one and we can make it work…hopefully!

  • Wendy September 5, 2012, 9:38 am

Love all three pics but would pick #1

  • Nicole September 5, 2012, 9:38 am

They’re all so cute but I would go with the first, I love the color of his eyes and the innocent stare.

  • Jonna September 5, 2012, 9:42 am

No doubt the top picture! His eyes are stunning and his expression is priceless!
    Congratulations!

  • Brittney September 5, 2012, 9:43 am

    #3! the yawn is adorable.

  • Jolene (Homespun Heritage) September 5, 2012, 9:44 am

#’s 2 AND 3! Who says it has to be just one! I love the background color of #2 and #3 is just precious!

  • stephanie September 5, 2012, 9:58 am

Print all of them – they are all amazing! But if you can only pick one, I would pick #3

  • Erin September 5, 2012, 9:58 am

I love all your pictures. They are beautiful, but I think the first one is the best!

  • Charise September 5, 2012, 9:59 am

I’d say big print/framing of #1, but #3 is also adorable and you should get that in a smaller print and frame it somewhere too. 🙂

  • Lindsay September 5, 2012, 10:08 am

I definitely say #1!! I really think the eyes are one of the most important aspect of portraits and I love that his eyes are so crisp and beautiful in that first image. I also love the emotion and feeling you get with #3.

    The frames look beautiful!

  • brooke @ sweats & sweets September 5, 2012, 10:20 am

    First one!

  • Jackie September 5, 2012, 10:32 am

I’m a fan of the top one… his eyes are so stunning!

  • Kim September 5, 2012, 10:33 am

I’d print #1. The plaid gives some fun color and he looks so secure and content resting on Daddy’s arm.

  • Katie @ Peace Love and Oats September 5, 2012, 10:35 am

As much as I love 3, go with 1 because you can see his eyes! Haha and I would t have kept a straight face if I were the frame lady either! Haha how could you??

  • Reenie September 5, 2012, 10:43 am

How about a collage of all three of the pics? If you have the disc, or the pics on your computer it’s very easy to do. I make mine at Walgreens (online). They are very reasonably priced too. 😉

  • Keri September 5, 2012, 11:06 am

Definitely the first one of Henry!

  • Katie September 5, 2012, 11:20 am

    # 1 All the way!! #3 would be my second choice 🙂

First picture of Henry for sure!

  • Joann September 5, 2012, 8:56 pm

I would frame them all! But….. if I had to pick one it would be #2. He just looks so happy there!
