Hit the Road

It’s raining out there… hope the sun is shining in Florida!

Ah yes.  Today we leave for our road trip to Florida.  I am less than thrilled by the prospect of driving eight (nine? ten?) hours with a baby and two dogs, but it’s cheaper than flying.  You should see the back of our car – it is loaded to the gills with all sorts of odds and ends.  Is driving worth my sanity?  Hmm.  I am not sure.  Maybe?

Brekkie:

Gluten-free pancake (a mix)

Sunflower butter

Coconut

Blackberries

All out of maple syrup – boo!  Still tasty, though.

I leave you with this…

Pray for us.  Pray that there are many Starbucks along the way…

We’ve got a rainy day here too, but in my windowless office I tend to forget about the weather. I’m sure Florida will be totally worth it once you get there. Have a great time Caitlin!

Good luck. Plenty of Starbucks in Atlanta if your drive takes you through here!!

That’s a cute baby photo. And, don’t worry about the drive. My SIL and BIL drove over 20 hours each way to visit family across the country with their 8 week old in July (+2 large dogs). They survived. :)

I love road trips, hopefully you’ll find something to love about this one! Is this Henry’s first 8-10 hour road trip? 3 cheers for new milestones!

Henry hasn’t been on a plane yet, has he? Quite often, the cabin pressure is too much for the eustachian tube in young babies to handle. The pressure causes pain, and lots of crying. I think you made the right choice by driving. Safe travels! :)

Kelly August 9, 2012 at 8:36 am

Let us know how it goes. I also have two Westies and an 11 week old baby. I am very nervous about road tripping with baby and dogs. Do the dogs sit on either side of the car seat? Mine are used to having the whole back seat and running back and forth from window to window which is not possible with car seat! I am afraid they will try to cross over the baby in the seat!!

Good luck! You are braver than me, we are flying to FL in a week (with our 4 yr old and 6 month old). It would be 14 hours for us though, and I get car sick easily.

Did Maggie even notice Henry was there in that pic? LOL!

Back in march I had to do a car ride with my mother, brother, sister-in-law, and my 3 month old nephew from Florida to Ohio. The baby was so good for most of the trip (both ways). He only got fussy in the last hour or so of each trip (but I think we all felt that way after 17 hours. You’ll be fine with Henry. I think it would be worse if he was more mobile. Even now at 8 months, I don’t know if we could make that trip with him. Good luck and hope you don’t get rain the whole way.

Hope you have a safe, fun trip! What part of Florida will you be going to – Miami? I’m actually in the Panhandle right now! My mom had to go for a work trip & doesn’t like flying, so since I had time off of work, I drove us down…from Ohio (16 hours)! It’s been a little rainy every day, but clearing up nicely in the afternoon for some nice, hot sun :)

Have a safe trip. Henry will do fine I’m sure. Download the free Starbucks app for your phone. It has a store locator that shows you the nearest Starbucks in the area. I love it for traveling. Enjoy this time with your family.

You don’t need luck, just boobies. Our first road trip was when my toddler was 8 weeks. He was pretty great but the drive just took longer because I stopped to breastfeed every 2 hours, I was also the driver.
Keep up the car trips so he gets used to traveling and being still. It will be so beneficial in the future.

Those pancakes look delicious! And good luck with the drive!! (You can do what my parents do and scope out the Starbucks so they know when NOT to stop and push an extra 30 minutes to get to one…) ;)

Good Luck. I actually have found that road trips, especially with babies Henry’s age are a breeze! They like the motion of the car and sleep a lot. I always bring my pump with me. We’ll stop to nurse and diaper change but in between stops, or when we’re really close to our destination and don’t want to stop, I pump and climb in the backseat with the bottle of milk.
