Heat Wave

in All Posts

Oh my.  Summer is upon us.

The only ones who don’t seem to mind the intense heat wave are the dogs.  Would you want to sit out on the deck in 95 degree weather in direct sunlight while wearing heavy black fur coat?  Crazy dogs.

Fun fact:  Humans have sweat glands over most of their body; however, dogs’ sweat glands are actually focused around their foot pats.  So when a pup overheats, they get sweaty palms!  Mostly, of course, dogs release heat by panting with an open mouth, which allows moisture to evaporate off their tongues and the lining of their lungs.  They can also dilate the blood vessels in their face or ears to release warmth.

Can you imagine if humans released heat by walking around and panting with an open mouth?  That would be so … awkward.  Terribly awkward.

Pant, pant, pant.

Told ya I’d whip up some banana soft serve at some point today!  I first heard about the gloriousness that is BSS from Choosing Raw.  Basically, it’s nearly like ice cream.  But there’s only one ingredient – frozen bananas.

This version was raspberry BSS so there were two ingredients:  frozen bananas and frozen raspberries.  Perfection.

In the food processor:

2 well frozen bananas

1/4 cup frozen raspberries

Two servings for two very happy adults.  Yum.

And since I love the pups so much, I let the lick the dish when I was all done.

Now everyone feels a bit cooler.

Honestly, I see this soft serve all over the foodie blogosphere, but I’m always skeptical to try it–how could fruit taste as good as ice cream?! But it sure looks good….and it is going to be 105 this weekend….

Also, do you need a food processor or can you use a blender? I don’t have a food processor…

    • Janae @ Bring-Joy June 29, 2012, 9:25 am

Coco: You can make it in a blender, especially if you have a good one like a Blendtec, but you’ll have to add a little milk to it AND cut your bananas into chunks before you start blending.

Yes, not exactly the same as icecream. I make mine in a champion juicer, & it comes out the consistency of frozen yogurt. Since I’m vegan, I really appreciate this, since it’s nearly impossible to get vegan soft serve anywhere!

Ohh the banana soft serve looks SO yummy. Must definitely give that a try.

I’m quite happy to be tucked away up in the NC mountains where it’s at least 10 degrees cooler… (Which is good since I don’t have air conditioning ;).)

Holy moly – that looks like the bomb dot com! I’d throw a little coconut milk in their too for some healthy fats to balance out that sugar, and boom, delicious dessert!

  • Gabby (Quest for Delicious) June 28, 2012, 8:50 pm

Yum! I haven’t had banana soft serve in a really long time, but I could definitely use it in the Vegas heat I have here!

  • Elisabeth June 28, 2012, 8:57 pm

Well, you could have been here in Ohio with me where it was 104!! 😉

  • Katie @ Peace Love and Oats June 28, 2012, 8:58 pm

I wa going to try and make banana soft serve tonight! I hope it turns out alright, I wish I had a vitamix!

Love the idea of raspberry BSS! I went on a huge BSS kick several months ago, even having it for breakfast. Now that it’s scorching hot outside, I’ll definitely be making it again!

I love banana soft serve!! It’s perfect for this sweltering weather!

  • Jordan @ Bake Write Sleep June 28, 2012, 10:00 pm

I have yet to try the banana soft serve, but I have 4 bananas in the freezer waiting for me to try it out! I can’t wait… Mmmm.

    • Jodie June 28, 2012, 10:12 pm

Me too, we must have been waiting for the perfect combo? 🙂

  • Kris June 28, 2012, 10:01 pm

Just a tip to slice the bananas into smaller pieces before freezing. I’ve seen too many comments of people who tried to process the whole frozen banana. Not so great for the food processor …

  • Jodie June 28, 2012, 10:11 pm

Wow, that looks delicious! I have frozen bananas ready to go, but I haven’t tried making banana soft serve yet. I think I’ll have to add raspberries to my shopping list this weekend!

  • Julia H. @ Going Gulia June 28, 2012, 10:37 pm

Oh, wow, your soft serve looks incredible. Somehow the idea of adding berries to banana soft serve never occurred to me…but that sounds like the absolute perfect summer treat. MUST TRY.

It got up to 108 here in KS today. So hot a co-worker and I baked cookies in her car. This is no joke- on the dashboard of her car. I loooove banana soft serve. I sometimes add a bit of nut butter and cocoa powder. MMMmmm. Btw, I really missed seeing pictures of Henry on the blog today!

    • Caitlin June 29, 2012, 12:24 pm

      Hahah omg that is nuts!

  • Sana June 28, 2012, 11:21 pm

BSS is the BEST thing I have ever made. Thank goodness for HLBlogs!

  • Laura @ She Eats Well June 28, 2012, 11:40 pm

Oh my goodness. That banana soft serve looks so Summery and refreshing. I like to do mine with chocolate usually (and pb if I’m feeling crazy!) but your variation looks like a nice version too :).

  • Reenie June 28, 2012, 11:54 pm

I just made this with frozen strawberries & bananas ~ I topped it with a crumbled granola bar and nuts. Soooooo good!!

  • Caralyn @ glutenfreehappytummy June 29, 2012, 12:29 am

yay banana soft serve! looks so delicious!

  • Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin June 29, 2012, 6:10 am

I think banana soft serve is my #1 favourite thing I’ve learned from reading blogs. I always stock up on the discounted overripe bananas at the grocery store now so that I can make it all the time!

  • Amanda June 29, 2012, 7:30 am

My shiba, that has essentially two coats of fur right now, loves to sun bathe. And her paws perpetually smell like stale fritos from the sweat I’m guessing.

Love banana ice cream so I may have to try this 🙂

  • Molly @ RDexposed June 29, 2012, 7:46 am

What are the state of ripeness of the bananas that you freeze? Too ripe of bananas seem to give off banana vapor taste when I’ve tried this.

    • Caitlin June 29, 2012, 12:22 pm

      Not black but def ripe.

  • Lexi @ You, Me, & A World to See June 29, 2012, 7:49 am

Yum I love banana soft serve! For me, the only problem is not making enough 😉 Because I’m only 1 person, I feel like processing 1 banana gets more stuck in the food processor than in my bowl!

  • Kelly June 29, 2012, 8:30 am

It is ridiculously hot…I hate it. I am so not a summer person yet I live in the South. Figures.

  • Laura June 29, 2012, 9:11 am

Holy Moley does it ever look like real ice cream! I am definitely giving this one a try!!

  • Christena June 29, 2012, 10:17 am

Your banana soft serve looks very firm & ice cream-y. Mine is always soupy. Did you re-freeze after you made it? How did you get that amazing consistency?! 🙂

    • Caitlin June 29, 2012, 12:20 pm

How long do you freeze the bananas for? They have to freeze at least 24 hours.

  • Amber K June 29, 2012, 1:47 pm

I absolutely love banana soft serve. I love it even more if I add cocoa powder too. Gotta love a banana-y frosty-like treat!
