Home for the Holiday

in All Posts

I’m only experiencing two types of dreams lately:  running dreams and baby dreams.  I’m either pushing out a baby or running really fast.  Sometimes, I’m running really fast to the hospital to push out a baby!

I read once that women who have nightmares about delivery actually have shorter and easier labors because their subconscious is preparing them for reality (source).  If this is true, my subconscious is also preparing me to be an Olympic track star, a millionaire, and a flying superhero.

How to Make the Perfect Scrambled Eggs < — there is a technique!

So – it appears that 2/3 of America is currently on a beach vacation for Memorial Day, judging from my Facebook news feed and blog reading.  I am very jealous!  I did not grow up in a family that went on regular summer holiday vacations.  Neither did the Husband.  So, we never think to schedule a vacation around Memorial Day or other holidays… I think this needs to change for next year – but honestly, we’ll probably forget to organize something!  Anyone else just hanging out ‘round their house on this holiday weekend?

We’re hangin’ at home, too! Great weekend to relax. Also my birthday tomorrow!!

    • CaitlinHTP May 27, 2012, 10:22 am

      Happy birthday!!!

  • Laine May 27, 2012, 10:22 am

Hanging around the house, but since I live next to the ocean I will probably bike past it, kayak in it and perhaps sit next to it with a cold beverage in my hand at some point today.

    • CaitlinHTP May 27, 2012, 10:22 am

Not to be mean… but I hate you.

  • Shari May 27, 2012, 10:29 am

I’m at home this holiday weekend, too — really jealous of everyone who’s at the beach, but on the bright side, at least there aren’t any long lines at the water ice place around the corner? 😛

  • Brigid May 27, 2012, 10:31 am

We live in LA and are still not going to the beach this weekend. It’ll be way too crowded! My family never planned holiday vacations either. I’m just enjoying thr long weekend with my husband and as few chores as possible. Today’s plan involves basketball-watching and homemade Bloody Marys.

  • Leslie May 27, 2012, 10:39 am

Hanging out at home. We are having a cook out tomorrow for a few family and friends. I prefer to skip taking a trip during holidays. Crowds are bigger, hotels and airlines charge a holiday premium, more traffiic on the highways or airports, beaches, etc.

Caitlin I’m reposting this comment in case you missed it because I would really love to hear your thoughts. If you would prefer to email me or it is too much to answer no worries at all I understand!

A couple posts ago you wrote, “when I start to feel negative, I make myself take off all my clothes, stand nekkid in front of the mirror, and think as many positive thoughts about myself and my body as I can”, and it totally blew me away. What an amazing and wonderful thing to do. How did you ever get this idea? Did you start doing it during pregnancy or have you done it for years? If you could indulge me with details and your process I would be so so grateful- I want to gather the courage to try too. Thank you for your continued dedication and inspiration. Much love.

Oh sorry! I saw this comment on an earlier post and meant to respond but then I didn’t feel well and forget 🙁

I started to do it when I was writing the first Operation Beautiful book. One of the women who I interviewed for the book told me she did that and I thought it was a really cool idea. I think it has worked for me because it ‘desensitizes’ me to any negative body image thoughts. Anyway, when I am finding myself engaging in Fat Talk about my bod, I strip off all my clothes and check myself out in the mirror. I think of all the things that my body lets me do (run, dance, do the horizontal polka, etc) and I think about how all the messages we see in the media of perfect bodies without cellulite or lumps or wrinkles are so unrealistic. I think about how I’m a REAL women and my body is REAL and awesome by the very fact that it’s my body. It can feel weird to do it but it really does work for me!

thank you SO much for answering :). love it.

  • Kelly May 27, 2012, 11:23 am

I’m just hanging around the house!! Writing my dissertation 🙂

  • Dione May 27, 2012, 11:28 am

We’re hanging out at home. My family never went on holiday vacations – we always had planned out summer vacations.

  • Susan May 27, 2012, 12:08 pm

I’m at home for the weekend. I would usually drive to my Mom’s and hang by her pool but I signed up for the Run to Remember half today – not my best race performance, =( – without realizing it was the holiday weekend. I do have tomorrow off and although I have vague cleaning aspirations I will also spend a lot of today resting. I am still sweaty from my run and need to get off the computer and shower. Ewww.

I also love your comment about your dreams – I can see you as a millionaire track star superhero, so don’t give up. =)

  • Kristin May 27, 2012, 12:26 pm

I am and I live near a beach! But not going:( I work tomorrow at the YMCA and we are only closed 2 days a year!

  • Emily May 27, 2012, 12:56 pm

Who the heck can afford annual vacations?! My husband and I have been together for 10 years and have never gone on vacation together. We do smart things with our money, like pay our mortgage and put it into IRAs. Boring, but smart.

  • Kailey May 27, 2012, 12:57 pm

My family is the same way – we never go out of town for Memorial Day weekend. I always looked at it as another day off from school 🙂

    Enjoy the extra day off!

  • Lauren J @ The Barn May 27, 2012, 12:57 pm

I’ve spent every Memorial Day since I was born at the lake with my family, but this year my husband’s job took us all the way from sunny North Carolina to the plains of South Dakota. I too have been very jealous of all the beach and lake goers, but we’re trying to make the best of the weekend by making our first attempt at brewing our own beer, and today we’re taking the dogs out to Custer State Park for a day full of hiking, fishing, and picnicking. Thankfully the weather moved out of the 40’s and into the 70’s today!

  • Lexi @ You, Me, & A World to See May 27, 2012, 1:47 pm

Hahaha scrambled eggs totally requires a technique! …Or so I’d like to think 😉

  • Sam @ Fit for My Fork May 27, 2012, 1:55 pm

It’s not a holiday weekend here but we spent it at home enjoying the sunshine! It was glorious!

I have nightmares about being pregnant or being in labour and I’m not even expecting a baby… I hope yours don’t keep you from sleeping! You need all the sleep you can get before baby comes 🙂

    Have a lovely long weekend!

  • Amanda May 27, 2012, 1:56 pm

Hanging at home too! Just catching some rays in the yard, catching up with friends, and doing to to-dos like washing my car and painting my nails. Much more relaxing than fighting shore traffic, but being at the beach would be lovely 🙂

  • Krista May 27, 2012, 2:03 pm

We are hanging around the house for the weekend, but we do have a room reserved tonight at the hotel we got married at because we are celebrating our 1st anniversary this weekend!

  • Kim May 27, 2012, 2:11 pm

We don’t go anywhere for memorial day either. We don’t want to deal with the crowds. We’ve been hanging out over here in Huntersville under the fan. Watching the Indy 500 and watching the NASCAR race tonite. 🙂 I love 3 day weekends. 🙂

  • Sarah May 27, 2012, 2:24 pm

Haha! Sometimes I call my Pug “Roomba” for the same reason.

  • Vikki May 27, 2012, 2:46 pm

Well, SC and NC have some great beaches for vacationers. (They’re not tropical but they are convenient if you live near them.) I grew up less than an hour from Myrtle Beach so going to the beach was no big deal for me.

We’ve been getting a house for a week for a couple years now. My parents insist on it as family bonding time. The week long mandatory family vacation is planned for July. Despite its mandatory nature, I’m looking forward to it.

  • Sana May 27, 2012, 2:46 pm

I have dreams where I FEEL pregnant, buttt I am not making a baby anyyy time soon. So it’s weird!

    • Vikki May 27, 2012, 4:11 pm

The worst nightmare I have ever had was when I dreamed that I’d had a baby. I could feel the baby in my arms. I knew it was mine. For some reason, I dreamed I was at my parents house and they were telling me that I had to take it home. I was absolutely panicked. I told my mother that I didn’t have the stuff to take care of a baby. I have never been so grateful to wake up in my life. That was how I knew that maybe parenthood wasn’t for me. (Note. I’m about to turn 34 and I had this dream last November. In my experience, that whole biological clock thing is a myth.)

  • Amber K May 27, 2012, 2:48 pm

My family usually took trips to the beach in the summer or went camping, but never on busy holiday weekends like Labor Day or Memorial Day. Just sitting around the house for me!

  • Christine @ BookishlyB May 27, 2012, 3:00 pm

I’m doing jack-crap this weekend and I LOVE it.

  • Adrienne May 27, 2012, 3:37 pm

Glad to know you’d forget to organize a trip too! We sure did. We were going to wing it but now we’re just sitting on the couch and tackling DIY projects. Still fun though. 🙂

  • Errign May 27, 2012, 4:07 pm

Yep, I’m just hanging out around house remembering what this long weekend is really for.

  • Laurie May 27, 2012, 4:22 pm

Yes just hanging out at the house this weekend, too! We opened our pool and the husband has been working outside the past couple days. I can’t even enjoy food b/c I’m 8 weeks pregnant and everything looks yucky to me 🙁

  • Gillian G. @ When Bread Is Broken May 27, 2012, 4:40 pm

YES, I am at home with nada to do for the holiday. But, I did just move here Friday so it’s kinda nice to not have anywhere else to be. And your eggs look deeelish 🙂

  • Katie @ Peace Love & Oats May 27, 2012, 4:42 pm

I actually came home from vacation yesterday!

  • Rebecca May 27, 2012, 4:53 pm

My sister’s Grad party was last night, so I’ve been home. We had a few parties before my sister’s, and ran a few errands, and then cleaned up after the party. This morning was church (nearly empty compared to other Sundays) and now I’m trying (and failing) to clean my room after coming home for the summer. It might wait a few more days…
If we do anything over this weekend, it’s time with family. But since most of the family was here yesterday for the party, there wasn’t much reason to do anything today.

  • Erin @ The Grass Skirt May 27, 2012, 4:55 pm

Don’t feel left out, my friend. I’m home too! We have some parties to hit up, but otherwise…it’s home sweet home!

  • Carly May 27, 2012, 5:09 pm

There has to be some sort of merit to the nightmare/labour idea! My dad was just telling me about a motivational speaker/sports psychologist he met who says the body will only do what the mind can visualize. So visualize away! (I just hope you have good kinds of dreams instead!)

  • Amanda @ Diary of a Semi-Health Nut May 27, 2012, 6:08 pm

Well I totally forgot it was Memorial Day weekend until two days before…so I’m currently at home. The family used to visit some friends on Memorial Day but nothing fancy. We never took big family vacations so I’m not too bothered that I’m not on a beach somewhere. Although it would be nice!

  • Melissa @TryingtoHeal May 27, 2012, 7:59 pm

I always stay at home around holidays because really, I just hate hate hate the crowds and traffic. It’s much easier to just have a bbq with my family at friends at home!

  • Sonia the mexigarian May 27, 2012, 9:35 pm

My family took vacations over the summer. Camping, roadtrips tc. We traveled to see family friends who lived just I’ve the hill at the beach on weekends so it didn’t seem like vacation. I had a horrible dream this am about my 10k today. It involved a lack of running gear, obstacles cussing lateness, and a bear. Apparently there are wild grizzly bears in the middle on San Jose. Lol. But I guess the nightmare made my run easier cuz I Prd! We have Hoover cats and Aussie over here 😉

  • Gogo May 28, 2012, 9:10 am

Home holiday ok and happy holiday my friend..you know Caitlin i get hungry to see your beautiful photos.

  • Scargosun May 28, 2012, 11:22 am

We never go away for Memorial Day either. The weather is usually so iffy and there is so much to do around the house by that point that I like to relax and do a bbq with other friends/family that are home. I was drooling over your watermelon. 🙂

  • Megan May 28, 2012, 9:37 pm

The boyfriend and I stayed at home this weekend too! I’m about to embark upon finals week along with studying for the GRE and he’s studying for his CFA (something financial) exam. We drove past the beach this afternoon while running errands and the crowds were beyond overwhelming. Although studying is no fun, I would rather be inside with the A/C then fighting the crazies at the beach!

  • Amber @ Busy, Bold, Blessed May 29, 2012, 8:47 am

My family never planned holiday vacations, but since my boyfriend’s family has a beach house… we automatically plan on heading down! I feel spoiled every single time we go 🙂

  • Finding a skinnier me May 29, 2012, 4:41 pm

I have midterms this week, so I stayed at home as well to study. I do the out of town camping trip for July 4th though!
