Clone Your Dog Giveaway

in All Posts

Okay, this is definitely the MOST AWESOME giveaway that I have ever had the pleasure of hosting.  One lucky reader will win a voucher from K-9 2.0 Cloning Labs, a company based out of California that specializes in… you guessed it!  Cloning family pets.

april fools

When the company first contacted me six months ago, my immediate reaction was, “Come on!  This must be a joke! You must think I’m a fool!”  But I did some research into the science behind pet cloning and realized that K-9 2.0 was totally legit – and completely amazing.  For a fee (a big fee, to be frank), they clone dogs and cats, letting pet owners enjoy being a Fur Mom or Fur Dad to their ‘baby’ for twice as long as they could naturally.

Pet cloning is super expensive – the retail price of K-9 2.0’s introductory package is $20,000.  Yes, TWENTY THOUSAND DOLLARS.  And yes, I know there are some ethical quandaries to deal with.  Is it really fair to bring a cloned dog into this world when so many need rescuing?  $20,000 could save the lives of hundreds or maybe even thousands of shelter pups!  But… I decided that, for me, having another Maggie or James was necessary

So when K-9 2.0 contacted me, I had a choice to make:  WHO TO CLONE?  Maggie or James?

IMG_6054

You would think this was an easy choice – Clone James!  He’s the smart and well-behaved one, after all.  But K-9 2.0 assured me that a cloned dog doesn’t necessarily have the same personality as the original pup.  I believe a lot of Maggie’s horrible behavior is due to her early upbringing with her original owners.  Also, James is two years younger than Maggie, and I think the original James will live longer than the original Maggie because he’s a mutt.  So, after a great deal of discussion, we opted to clone Maggie.

Two Maggies!  Exactly what my world needs!

A

So, how does the cloning process work?  Well, I had to take Maggie to the vet so they could remove a small sample of tissue (they took it from her tummy).  Then, I packaged it up in a vial that K-9 2.0 provided me with and mailed it off to the lab.

Roughly twelve weeks later, I got a phone call that Maggie 2.0 had been ‘born’ out of her test tube!  I was so excited.  She spent the first eight weeks of her life living with an adopted mommy dog that provided her with milk and love until she was ready to be mailed to her forever homes.  After two long months, I got a second call that Maggie 2.0 was ready to be shipped to our house in Charlotte.

Maggie 2.0 arrived yesterday!  We were all so excited to meet her.  A new house and a new puppy, all in one day.  I spent most of the day taking care of her.  Isn’t she the most adorable thing you have ever seen?

PC220040

I never got to see the original Maggie as a puppy, so it’s amazing to see a mini version of her now.  Even though she’s a lab-created pup, she seems perfectly normal.  She just wants to play and roll around.  And original Maggie is totally enamored by her – I think she believes Maggie 2.0 is her puppy!  James seems to like her, too.

Now – we just need a name!  I don’t plan to call her Maggie 2.0 forever.  She’s her own pup.

The best part about this story is that not only do I get to cuddle and squeeze Maggie 2.0 for the next 15 years, but YOU can win a chance to have your doggie or kitty cloned, too!   To win a voucher from K-9 2.0, simply leave a comment with your name suggestions for Maggie 2.0.  I’ll pick a winner on Tuesday morning.  Good luck and lots of puppy kisses!

LOL.. I knew something was wrong when you didn’t link the page of the company. Good one!

oh, and the photo of Maggie 2.0 links to a really weird place hahahaa.

    • julie April 1, 2012, 10:08 am

Why is it weird? Because she has a mental illness and she’s trying to educate/help others who may have similar disorders? It makes me angry that people can be so insensitive.

      • Caitlin April 1, 2012, 10:43 am

Just an FYI, it’s the image source. Because obviously I don’t own a Maggie 2.0. 🙁 However, doesn’t it look like her?

      • Sue April 2, 2012, 12:07 am

I agree Julie. Although I’m sure nothing was meant it was a bit of a thoughtless comment and I feel hurt for that brave blog owner. That said, amazing April fool Caitlin – got me big time! I was incensed!! 🙂

  • Alyse April 1, 2012, 9:17 am

My jaw kinda dropped reading this post. And then, shit, Caitlin did it again. Last year it was lottery, now Maggie 2.0.

The puppy is freakin’ adorable though.

  • Kelly April 1, 2012, 9:18 am

Gosh, you were just about to get one long rant and I was so close to saying “you’ve changed” and walking away. Good thing the other readers caught on!! This was a good one. Probably one of the best. 🙂

  • Tava April 1, 2012, 9:19 am

Lol how funny!. How about Lainey for her.

  • Alett April 1, 2012, 9:19 am

    ha ha!

you had me until the vet had to take a piece of tissue out -> that would have to have been done under anesthesia and I KNOW you would not put your baby Maggie under anesthesia for that !

    good one!

p.s. I have two friends with birthdays today

  • Link Bartholomew April 1, 2012, 9:19 am

Ok, I was outraged. Thinking, “Are you kidding me?” Then I looked at the date on the bottom corner of my computer and I was completely relieved.

  • Kim April 1, 2012, 10:06 am

      Speaking of cloning… hehe.

  • Carolyn April 1, 2012, 10:19 am

Caitlin, this is by far the strangest thing ever! I can’t actually believe you have a lab grown puppy. This is sci-fi stuff. I am curious to see how Maggie 2.0 will grow up and behave. Any weird traits or downsize of growing in a test tube? This is quite the science experiment, socially, of you ask me.

    Name? Galactic

  • Carolyn April 1, 2012, 10:20 am

    Ive been fooled. Ha.

  • Anne Marie April 1, 2012, 10:24 am

I was totally on the lookout–I remember you love April Fools!

  • Krista @ Healthy Berg April 1, 2012, 10:25 am

After last year’s Wealthy Tipping Point I was excited to see what you had planned this year. Very nice 🙂

  • JenAdair April 1, 2012, 10:25 am

You should name her Maddie! Unless of course that’s the name you picked out for your baby if she’s a girl!

I would LOVE more than anything to clone my little chihuahua mix Bubba. He’s the best dog in the whole world and we always talk about we wish we could clone him because he’s PERFECT!

    • JenAdair April 1, 2012, 10:51 am

I admit, u was baffled considering all your other life choices why you would clone you dog. I’ve been fooled!!!

  • Natasha April 1, 2012, 10:27 am

I got down to where the test tube Maggie was born when I occured to me it’s April 1st. Good one! You ALMOST had me 😉

  • Amanda April 1, 2012, 10:30 am

Oh you had me going for a bit there…….until I saw the date. I love how much thought you put into these. Thinkgeek.com has a bunch of special merchandise available today, it’s pretty epic.

  • Emily April 1, 2012, 10:34 am

Name her Aggie! It rhymes with Maggie and I got it from Agatha Cromwell in Halloweentown (best childhood memory).

Or, Lily is also a beautiful name.

    • Emily April 1, 2012, 10:55 am

Oh, April’s Fools! I should have known. Another blog I read did their post at midnight. Can’t blame a girl for being hopeful.

  • Gloria April 1, 2012, 10:37 am

    Hahaha I just realized it’s April 1st! Good one 😉 🙂

  • Heather April 1, 2012, 10:47 am

  • Mary April 1, 2012, 11:05 am

I legit got halfway through this post before I remembered that its April 1st! You got me Caitlin!! I was even reading last year on April 1st so I have no excuse not to remember you love April Fool’s other than being oblivious to the day. I did think it was strange you were able to make Sophie’s Choice and choose between maggie and james…lol

  • Tami April 1, 2012, 11:09 am

I don’t trust you on April fools! This was a great! I love how you said it was based in Cali….you never know what us Californians will come up with!

    • Tami April 1, 2012, 11:11 am

Since you love April fools so much here’s the joke I did on my 7 year old son this morning…..tape birthday streamers in front of their door so that when they open it they can’t get out! My son got a kick out of it and had fun breaking through the streamers.

  • Sharan {College Girl Eats} April 1, 2012, 11:11 am

Hahaha, unfortunately as somebody who is studying medical genetics this didn’t quiiiittee fool me, but it was a creative effort!

Hope you have a fun day!

You totally had me fooled… NAME HER APRIL!

  • Ciera @ Rose and Thistle April 1, 2012, 11:55 am

    Haha brilliant. Happy April Fools!

  • Jenny April 1, 2012, 11:56 am

I’m kind of ashamed to admit that I didn’t pick up on this being a joke for over an hour! I even thought about it all during my morning run and how it just didn’t make sense. It wasn’t until I read another blog w/ an April Fools joke that I finally realized your trick! Yes, yes, I am apparently an April Fool 😉

  • Andi April 1, 2012, 11:57 am

Hahahaha, you got me! This really weirded me out. Good one!

You are really good with April fools!! I started reading this and thought it was so exciting!!!! Hahaha 🙂 I’m silly! Last year I really spent the day thinking you won the lottery. But a cool name… You should call her Maggie 2.0!

  • Anne @strawberryjampackedlife April 1, 2012, 12:39 pm

Definitely not falling for that . . .

Although like you we never got to see our little April as a puppy. I wish that we could have though.

Your reputation precedes you. I actually woke up this morning thinking, “I cannot wait to see what Healthy Tipping Point did for April Fool’s Day!”

    • Stephanie C April 1, 2012, 5:53 pm

      Me too!

  • peach April 1, 2012, 1:22 pm

Yours was the first blog I read this morning and immediatley I thought, “Girl, this is not right”…took me about ten seconds to realize what day it was 😉 Phew..

  • Kristin @ Wounded Fawn April 1, 2012, 1:26 pm

Your April Fools tricks are working less and less. Haha I thought, now if she’s eating her own placenta ( which I think is awesome) I doubt she’d clone the pups! Haha Not that they’re directly related that is just how I worked it out in my head.

  • chelsey @ clean eating chelsey April 1, 2012, 1:28 pm

I must say, this was good, but last year’s still tops in my book! 🙂

  • Rebecca April 1, 2012, 1:45 pm

I read through this completely skeptical, and then remembered it was April 1st. Nice one. 🙂

  • Jessica April 1, 2012, 1:47 pm

I have the most amazing pomeranian mix that I would clone!! He is so sweet, unique, and perfect I know there isn’t another dog out there like him. He is eight now so it would be just amazing to have his mini-me. I can’t even imagine what that would be like!!

  • Erika April 1, 2012, 2:54 pm

Wow! Lots of new things for you! Congratulations! How about zoey? My pups’ name is zeke 🙂

  • Elise miller April 1, 2012, 3:03 pm

How about Twix? I have a German Shepherd Border Collie mix that would love a buddy! He is so smart, my husband and I always say how spoiled we are to have such a great dog and how it would be hard to have a different one. 2 of Koda would be a dream come true!

  • Emily C April 1, 2012, 3:09 pm

Ha! April Fool’s. I got kind of excited at first though because…my dog died last Thursday. 🙁

  • Stacy W. April 1, 2012, 3:19 pm

I always thought that if I had a little girl puppy, I’d want to name her Lulu 🙂 I’ve heard of the pet cloning and had the same reaction (lots of dogs need to be rescued), but I would clone my little guy in a heartbeat!

    • Stacy W. April 1, 2012, 4:02 pm

Okay. It just dawned on me that it’s April 1. Very funny 😛 But I’d STILL totally clone my dog.

  • Moni Meals April 1, 2012, 3:20 pm

awesome! Sneaky you! You had me for about 1 min. I remember last year too, you are hilairous. I do the same thing, been pranking people all day. 🙂

  • Kasia April 1, 2012, 3:51 pm

Lol….I was SO unimpressed reading this post. I even turned around to the hubby and said “ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!?!” and proceeded to rant. Phew! Glad it was an April Fool’s joke. I’m so gullible :s

  • Stacy April 1, 2012, 3:52 pm

    Very funny, missy! 😉

  • Kendall @On An Inhale April 1, 2012, 3:53 pm

Names: Matilda, Maddy, Maddison, Clemintine (I love that name!) This is amazing and it makes me so happy. My Willie b is turning 13 this year and it would make me feel so much better about his old age knowing I can experience him again. Enjoy your new puppy and house!!

  • Molly @ RDexposed April 1, 2012, 4:05 pm

The post title gave it all away! Ha

  • Jasmine April 1, 2012, 4:05 pm

    lol.

I literally came here just to see what you’d do this year. I love how you bolded “joke” and “fool.” hehe.

    • Jen April 1, 2012, 4:41 pm

Ahahahaha…I hadn’t even noticed the bolded “joke” and “fool” – hilarious! And, you actually had me going for the first three paragraphs, at which point I stopped reading, trying to absorb this. I just kept thinking “NO WAY would she do this,” then finally remembered what day this is! LOL. 🙂

  • Jamie@everydaydolce.com April 1, 2012, 4:08 pm

    Epic 😉

  • Kelly April 1, 2012, 4:08 pm

  • Angela April 1, 2012, 4:14 pm

I think you should name it Wealthy Tipping Point…bahaha

  • Laura April 1, 2012, 4:25 pm

    Heh.

Although the problem with reading American blogs is that it’s already April 2 in New Zealand, so I’m always kind of “Huh? What’s with the late April Fools?” for a second.

  • joy meece April 1, 2012, 4:25 pm

Okay! Since I know you LOVE Maggie soooo much – you had me for a minute with today’s April Fool’s joke. Being retired, I just hadn’t kept up with what the date was. You got me AGAIN! Mom

  • Jolene (Homespun Heritage) April 1, 2012, 4:30 pm

Can I get a clone of Maggie, too? Our dog passed away last November and we’ve been doggy-free since then….It would have been so neat to have another one of her..she was a Greyhound/German Shepherd mix…so adorable! Maybe Maggie would share her genes with our family?

  • Annie April 1, 2012, 4:35 pm

    Daisy.

Awww, I’m sad their isn’t a giveaway, you got me!! 🙂 had me going for a moment there! I would never pay 20K, but I would love to have another Quincy (our rescued loveable golden retriever) 🙂

Congrats on the new home btw, I following your blog every single day and I’m so thrilled and happy for you and your growing family… it looks like a beautiful home! 🙂

  • Amanda April 1, 2012, 5:02 pm

    Nice one 😉

  • Emma Kate April 1, 2012, 5:12 pm

OMG you got me good!!!! I had to read through the comments to realise it was an April Fools joke. I was thinking ‘I can’t believe someone would do that, clone their pet?! It just seems wrong to me’. Nice one Caitlin

  • Jen W. April 1, 2012, 5:26 pm

AMAZING! You’re not “April Fooling” us are you? I vote for “MJ” (short for Maggie Jr) as your new pups name.

  • tasha the clean eating mama April 1, 2012, 5:36 pm

    Hahaha!!! Brilliant post!!!

  • Katie April 1, 2012, 5:38 pm

    That’s so cool!
I like the name Marlee for a pup!

  • courtney April 1, 2012, 5:56 pm

You had me for a minute there! Good one!

  • Julia April 1, 2012, 6:12 pm

    Elizabeth! For Queen Elizabeth!

  • Brittnie (A Joy Renewed) April 1, 2012, 6:19 pm

You had me going on this one! Geez – ha ha. I didn’t believe last years lottery joke but this one was totally into this year and it was making me mad. 🙂

  • Katie April 1, 2012, 6:20 pm

While driving this morning I started guessing what you would do this year. I loved last year’s “Wealthy Tipping Point” but Maggie 2.0 was really good! Way to go!

  • Tiffany April 1, 2012, 6:56 pm

OMG I am an idiot…I totally believed this and was wavering between entering the contest (because hello, I love my pooch) and going off on you for condoning something as crazy as this!! Haha…wow, it’s been a long day I guess 🙂

  • marie [would] April 1, 2012, 6:58 pm

ahh, you’re so cute. i just got home from a race and said to myself, “i gotta look at htp’s april fool’s joke!”

  • Katie April 1, 2012, 7:58 pm

I am still trying to wrap my head around that Maggie was cloned! I would have loved to have my childhood dog Ellie cloned, but now I have another dog named Birdie, who I also never got to see little (we adopted her at 6), so that would be cool/weird to ‘meet her’ as a pup! My name is Gigi!

  • Sarah T April 1, 2012, 7:59 pm

I’m not interested in being in the contest as I have a cat who doesn’t need to be cloned. (I love her but not my husband) However, I just wanted to add my name suggestion; Lily. Your new pup looks like a Lily to me.

    • Sarah T April 1, 2012, 8:00 pm

As I read the above comments now, I get it. Ha Ha. You’re funny.

  • Joanne April 1, 2012, 8:17 pm

OMG! I SO Want to clone my German Shepherd. He is the love of our lives! You’re so luck and Maggie 2.0 IS adorable.
    My name suggestion: Chloe

    PLEEEEAASSSEEE…pick me! 🙂

    • Joanne April 1, 2012, 8:36 pm

      Aaapprilll Fools! LOL 🙂

  • Sara April 1, 2012, 8:20 pm

I thought “really?” and then remembered it is April 1 and you do some epic April Fool’s Jokes!

  • Nicole April 1, 2012, 8:28 pm

Ahh, you’re so good, I fall for your tricks every year!!

  • hannah April 1, 2012, 8:37 pm

I would love my golden doodle hershey cloned!

  • cecilanne April 1, 2012, 8:38 pm

The best story of the day. And by “day” of course, I mean April 1! The cloned puppy should, of course, be named “Gullible.”

  • Jenn (Be YOU at Be Me) April 1, 2012, 8:38 pm

I’d love to have a Plato 2.0. He is a rescue dog and has had the first 4 years of his life…rough.

Maggie 2.0 can be named Mindy!

  • Marla April 1, 2012, 8:54 pm

    APRIL FOOL’S PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Boy, Caitlin, no offense but your readers are
shall we put it nicely “gullible”?
I was going to use another word but that would be rude 😉
    Sheesh!

  • Marla April 1, 2012, 8:55 pm

    PS
Oh,now that I read more than a couple of random comments,
I am relieved to find out noone fell for this!
    No fools here 😉

  • Karen April 1, 2012, 8:58 pm

    April fools!!

  • Nancy Bennett April 1, 2012, 9:02 pm

I have two ideas: one is Mollie, which is alliterative and goes well with Maggie. The other is “Meryl,” since Maggie Thatcher was played to perfection (and Oscar worthiness!) by Meryl Streep, who is a goddess.
Both are great suggestions for your sweet little girl!

  • Elise April 1, 2012, 9:44 pm

I read this whole post before it sunk in how totally off it was! At the very least, you could never keep a secret like this for days or weeks after you had a new pup at home! Nice one!

  • Stacie April 1, 2012, 9:57 pm

Umm…is this your April Fools joke for this year? Remember last year when you won the lottery?!

….but I would LOVE to clone my dog 🙂

  • Irina April 1, 2012, 10:02 pm

OMG, the new puppy is adorable!!!!!

    • Irina April 1, 2012, 10:03 pm

if , of course, it is a new puppy!!!

  • Alek Prus April 1, 2012, 10:06 pm

I like the name cleopatra, or Cleo!

  • susan April 1, 2012, 11:41 pm

That was a good one, took nearly the whole post before I was like “oh yeah it’s april 1”

  • Jules April 2, 2012, 12:15 am

I was going to say: that’s really effin twisted! Really hope it’s 04/01/2012!

  • Emily April 2, 2012, 12:54 am

    Magpie! Or Tosh (get it…2.0)

  • Bekah April 2, 2012, 1:14 am

Ok, I totally fell for that. I was thinking: Oh, weird… and gross! They clone dogs!? 🙂 Ha ha… I’m relieved! Happy April Fools Day!!! 🙂

  • Eliza April 2, 2012, 2:35 am

I assumed you would have been more concerned about the ethical side so I knew it was a joke. But that puppy is so cute

  • Rachael @ Mrs-Adventure April 2, 2012, 5:14 am

Okay I’ll admit it, I totally thought this post was a JOKE for the first two paragraphs. Not only do I ALWAYS talk about cloning our pug Gus usually referred to as “doodle” I didn’t realize it was already available for the average person. Although 20K is A LOT your wee one sure makes me cross my fingers and hold my breath in hopes I WIN :o)

I think she looks like a Miss. May.

    XO,

    Rach

  • ashley April 2, 2012, 5:34 am

Well I’m very happy to hear about Maggie 1.0 I was beginning. To worry its been jamesland lately.
    How about Missy or Macie

  • Charity April 2, 2012, 6:06 am

You really got my hubby with this one. LOL he was quite upset that you would do that to your dog, then advertise it for the company. Love the Maggie puppy photo!

  • Jessica @ MyKindnessCounts April 2, 2012, 6:44 am

April Fools! This is hysterical, Caitlin! I wish I could clone my girl, Lola 😀 She’s half chihuahua half shih tzu. She’s an absolute piece-of-work (little dog syndrome), but she’s also a charmer.

  • Angie All The Way April 2, 2012, 7:51 am

No one ever gets me on April Fools because it’s my birthday! lol Good one! Hahaha

  • Ashley @ The North Carolina Cowgirl April 2, 2012, 8:21 am

Haha you almost got me! I got all my friends today too. I put a post on facebook that I got a new job and would be moving! 5 minutes after I posted it the phone calls and texts started! It was great!

  • Maria April 2, 2012, 9:06 am

This was the best April Fool’s day – I actually was duped until I saw your next post today. I cannot believe myself. I have enjoyed all your funny Maggie posts and now I guess I have to face the fact that I’m even dumber than your dog. I’m just truly laughing at myself now. 🙂

  • Nenette Seaux April 2, 2012, 9:38 am

    Awesome, I surely was fooled.

  • hilary April 2, 2012, 11:17 am

“wtf? they do that now? really?! really…”

  • Victoria April 2, 2012, 11:53 am

Sounds great! I have a kitty that I would love to have 2 of one of my kitties 🙂

  • Cristina April 2, 2012, 12:32 pm

Great April Fool’s joke! LOVE the baby doxie picture, too.

  • Anna April 2, 2012, 3:57 pm

Ha, this post is great, but the BEST part is going through the comments to see who would actually clone their pets. So funny!

  • Breanne April 2, 2012, 5:14 pm

    Molly! 🙂

  • Life's a Bowl April 3, 2012, 7:40 am

Bahaha, I totally was like WTF at first but then realized you posted this on 4/1… This may be the one giveaway I won’t enter ;P

  • Meg April 3, 2012, 8:23 am

I need my rescued pup cloned!

  • Sara May 21, 2012, 10:24 pm

    Hi,
Just read your story and I’ve never even heard of this kind of thing. Your story truely touched me. My best friend died 10 days ago today. We had her for ten years. She was with me most of everything. I think you are very lucky and I hope the new adventure with your Maggie 2.0 has been amazing! Best Wishes,
    Sara
    Rip Peach <3

  • Kerry July 12, 2012, 10:33 am

If this was meant as a joke I think it was a nasty one. Some of us who were not able to have children of our own do to medical reasons love our pets as children. I would love to clone one of my darling sweet dogs if the price was doable, but at 100,000 its not. If people have the money, I say go for it. I love my animal more than most people..and this “joke” just proves how nasty human beings can be.

  • Jenn's Adventures April 2, 2013, 7:56 pm

BAHAHAHA!!! I remember your 2011 April Fools “Wealthy Tipping Point” — that was the day I started following you, it was so good! 🙂

I was SO busy yesterday, I totally missed the awesomeness of April Fools. I would have been an easy target because it was “just a crazy busy Monday” for me!!!
