Goodbye, Pool

in All Posts

Today was my last swim at the Charlotte Aquatic Center. So sad!

A few months ago v. today… different swimsuits, obviously.

Why was it my last swim?  Well, the pool isn’t exactly next door to our new house, so I decided to cancel my membership and join a gym with a pool that is closer.  I get oddly attached to certain buildings (which is weird because it’s not like the Aquatic Center knows me…) and am sad to say goodbye. I guess it’s more about all the memories at the pool – this is where I really figured out how to swim and trained for all my summer triathlons

Lucky for me, it was was long course day (the pool can be set up as 50 meters in length or 25 yards in length).  Long course is so much more enjoyable than short course.

I did 700 meters, hopped out, and bid the pool adieu.

I am trying to make a real effort this week to maintain the ‘habit’ of exercising without going overboard.  I can feel all the stress and tension associated with moving and working and figure this is certainly not the week to go all out.  Exercise should add to your energy levels – not sap them away.  Know what I mean?

Pre-swim smoothie.  This combo is GREAT.

4

1 cup almond milk

1 banana

1/2 cup frozen raspberries

2 scoops protein powder

2 tablespoons sunflower butter

And a post-swim lunch of toast, eggs, chips and hummus, and an apple.

As well as another banana and almonds, which I wolfed down on the way to coaching Girls on the Run

I love what you said about how exercise should give you more energy not drain it- so true!

  • Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife March 27, 2012, 4:47 pm

I LOVE that last quote–thank YOU so much 🙂

I get attached to people and buildings alike….it’s always hard to say goodbye!

Those chips from TJ’S are AMAZING. New favorite for sure!

  • Tiff March 27, 2012, 4:48 pm

Awww, bye pool! 🙂 I have those chips at my house right now, by the way. Aren’t they awesome?!?!

    • Caitlin March 27, 2012, 8:05 pm

omg so addicted. we go through bags of it!

  • bex March 27, 2012, 4:59 pm

Your “thought of the day” is so perfect for me today. Thank you 🙂

  • Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries March 27, 2012, 5:04 pm

love that last quote you put up for your thought of the day… i needed that reminder. thank you! 🙂

  • Katie @ Peace Love & Oats March 27, 2012, 5:09 pm

I always get nostalgic when I move! I moved several times in college (same city) and then here to chicago. Even changing houses in Charleston (I moved within the same 1 mile radius…) made me miss certain things!

  • Claire Zulkey March 27, 2012, 5:20 pm

Sorry if you answered this elsewhere, but have you had good experiences buying maternity swimwear so far, and if so, from where? thanks!

  • Marissa C March 27, 2012, 5:20 pm

Spill on the pregnancy swimsuit…where did you get it?

I did manage to find one when I was pregnant but it was very unsexy. Yours looks much nicer.

    • Caitlin March 27, 2012, 8:06 pm

      see above!

  • Sarena (The Non Dairy Queen) March 27, 2012, 5:28 pm

I get oddly attached to strange places too. I think it’s more about the memories I made there more than anything else. Almost a changing of a time in my life.

  • Lisa March 27, 2012, 5:34 pm

I get that! When I wanted to lose 100 pounds I joined the nearby community pool by my apartment. I loved it there–even though it was crowded and full of screaming kids. After I moved in with my boyfriend I canceled that membership because it was too far away from the new place. I missed my little pool for a long time! I got comfortable there and that was the pool where I lost 100 pounds. 🙂

  • Stellina @ My Yogurt Addiction March 27, 2012, 5:45 pm

That quote just put a smile on my face! 🙂

  • Hillary March 27, 2012, 5:59 pm

I’m the same way; I get oddly (embarrassingly?) attached to things that I really shouldn’t have any attachment to!

  • Life's a Bowl March 27, 2012, 6:01 pm

I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who has those silly attachments to things 😛 I felt the same way after my last workout at my college gym- the place was absolutely beautiful! It had multiple levels filled with basketball courts, a track, workout machines, a pool, weights, TV’s anything you could think of!

  • Stacy March 27, 2012, 6:04 pm

I love your thought of the day! Thank you!

    • SaraRM March 27, 2012, 7:24 pm

      ditto!

  • jamie@everydaydolce March 27, 2012, 6:23 pm

Love that thought of the day! And you look so happy and healthy in your swimsuit 🙂 You’re a rockstar for getting in that pool despite all of the moving stress, etc. 🙂

  • Regina March 27, 2012, 7:35 pm

I have a tangent question. I’m 18.5 weeks pregnant and already my pre-pregnancy swimsuits are becoming uncomfortable and need to be replaced for the duration of my pregnancy. Where on earth did you find a regular (read NOT tankini and not bikini) swimsuit to fit during pregnancy? All I find are really frilly one-pieces or tankinis neither of which I’d feel comfortable wearing to swim in a pool.

    Thanks 🙂

  • Connie March 27, 2012, 7:52 pm

I really loved your thought of the day, I needed that 🙂

  • Erin March 27, 2012, 8:29 pm

are you overwhelmed with change right now? don’t worry, it will all come together- hit the couch and watch The Notebook in the meantime..you’ll be all good in no time…

  • dana March 27, 2012, 8:30 pm

That thought of the day was what I needed tonight. Thank you 🙂

  • Shari March 27, 2012, 9:48 pm

    Love that quote!!

  • Jessica @ The Process of Healing March 27, 2012, 9:57 pm

I LOVE that quote! Let me guess.. pinterest?!
And I feel the same away… I get attached to things and people way too easily.

    • Mildly Entertained March 27, 2012, 10:08 pm

You literally took the words out of my mouth – about the quote and the attachments!

Caitlin, do you have any tips for an adult who wants to learn how to swim – without lessons? I’ve never been able to swim and have missed out on so many fun opportunities because of it. I have serious problem with holding my breath (meaning fear and discomfort!). I can’t afford lessons right now though. Do you think it’s possible to ever be able to swim in the ocean one day for someone who can’t even pool-swim?

      • Amber @ Busy, Bold, Blessed March 28, 2012, 8:22 am

I would start with the internet! I’m sure there are tons of websites with swimming instrutions. Just google something like “how to breathe while swimming for beginners.” I google everything 🙂 I’m sure there’s also a bunch of videos youtube! Good luck.

        • CaitlinHTP March 28, 2012, 3:20 pm

I think you can! I would def rec YouTube videos. You would be surprised at how helpful they are! Be safe.

  • Liz @ Tip Top Shape March 27, 2012, 10:21 pm

I love that last quote 😀

  • Gina @ Running to the Kitchen March 27, 2012, 10:56 pm

Love that thought of the day. I need that one printed out and plastered in front of my face recently.

  • Katherine March 27, 2012, 11:12 pm

I am about to graduate from college in May(!) and that quote was exactly what I needed. The job hunting process is less than ideal but I just have to trust that it will all work out even if its not right now. I repeat “Im too blessed to be stressed” at least 10 times a day 🙂

  • Liz March 27, 2012, 11:59 pm

    LOVE the quote! 😀

  • Laura @ She Eats Well March 28, 2012, 1:09 am

Thank you for posting that thought. I needed that. Especially today!

I get oddly attached to buildings/places too…it’s always weird to say goodbye to a place you’re used to spending time in. Also, congrats on maintaining an active pregnancy!

  • Haleigh March 28, 2012, 4:47 am

I also get attached to buildings and places. It’s always difficult for me to say goodbye. I just have to remind myself that there will be something new and exciting in the future.

  • Brittney March 28, 2012, 8:45 am

Thanks for posting that last picture/thought of the day. I needed to hear that today 🙂 Let me know if you need help with your move or just want to get away for a meal/froyo or something.

  • Sara March 28, 2012, 8:51 am

The thought of the day is exactly what I needed–thanks Caitlin!

  • Taylor @ Nuts for Apples March 28, 2012, 9:46 am

I just wanted to let you know that you inspire me to swim more & try out triathlons! I always thought I couldn’t swim until I actually made an effort last spring & realize I could swim laps, even if my endurance did suck. I need to get back into it & it’s always inspirational to see how far you have come with swimming! So thank you!

  • Melissa March 28, 2012, 9:51 am

Just read your thought of the day and it is EXACTLY what I needed. Thanks.

  • Ashley O. @ The Vegetable Life March 28, 2012, 10:35 am

Wow your thought of the day was just what I needed to hear right now. It has been a really hard part 6-8 months but that really helped. Thank you 🙂

  • Johanna B March 28, 2012, 10:38 am

Love this thought of the day.

  • Quisha March 28, 2012, 11:00 am

Love that thought, I’m going to put it up in my cube 🙂

BTW you look amazing. So funny I met you for the first time at the airport in Philly last year as we waited for all the girls (I was there with Nikki). Now you’re pregnant. Craziness and all so beautiful at the same time haha.

  • Amber K March 28, 2012, 1:50 pm

I get attached to places too. I was super bummed to move from my old gym to my new one, but I just couldn’t justify paying three times the price! Still bummed sometimes when I drive by it, but I like saving money!

  • Andrea @ Run, Eat, Date, Sleep March 28, 2012, 3:59 pm

I totally know what you mean about becoming attached to buildings. I miss my old Y terribly. There was nothing special or exciting about it, and it actually held a really bad memory for me (I was a lifeguard, so take it from there). But I miss it so much! It was so simple and basic, while my gym in Orlando is 3 stories with state of the art equipment.
