My, my.  What a difference 10 weeks makes.

14 weeks IMG_7128 - Copy

Happy 24 weeks, BabyHTP!   This week, we’re working on brain and lung development.  Baby is also gaining more body fat and is now 11.81 inches long and weighs 1.32 pounds.  And – best of all – BabyHTP is now considered “legally viable” by my sources and would stand a fair chance of surviving if he or she was born premature.  Not that I want her or him to come out any time soon!

IMG_7135

What’s going on with me this week?  Well, I – for one – am freaking exhausted. Not due specifically to pregnancy; it’s more because of all the traveling that I’ve been doing.  I’m definitely unrested, dehydrated (my lips are so red and chapped!), and cranky.  You know the “I’m so tired that I want to vomit” feeling?  Yeah.  I have that.

In addition:

  • I have been yearning for a definite baby bump since the day I discovered I was pregnant.  After my Operation Beautiful event on Monday, I asked if the audience had questions, and the first question was, “When are you due?”  Also, a stranger at the airport offered me his seat.  And then our home inspector asked me when I was due right after meeting me.  It’s fun to know that other people are SURE I’m pregnant now and aren’t afraid to bring it up for fear of being mistaken and offending me.

  • The baby is so strong now that her/his kicks sometimes hurt me!  The Husband hadn’t been around for any kicking sessions for about two weeks, but last night, he got to feel about ten good thumps and rolls and was amazed at how much stronger the baby felt under his hand.  Feeling the progression in the strength of the kicks has been really neat.

  • My stomach itches all the time.  I think it’s because the skin is stretching.

  • MomHTP is coming to visit me this weekend.  We haven’t seen each other in a while, so it’s very exciting.

IMG_7129

My goal for this week is to get back into regular exercise.  I really fell off the wagon this week, my friends.  My sole workout was a 2.0-mile walk (my pregnancy goal is to exercise at least three times a week, which I had maintained for about 12 weeks in a row!).  However, I operate under a “life sometimes gets in the way” mindset – not to allow myself to make excuses but to ensure I don’t make myself feel unnecessarily crappy for my choices (feeling crappy results in even more unhealthy choices, in my experience).  Life definitely got in the way this week, and I’m a pretty firm believer that exercising while really exhausted (pregnant or not) is not worth it.

The free pass was quite nice, but now it’s time to get some sleep and re-motivated.  Hold me to it, okay?

Other than those random updates, not much is going on pregnancy-wise.   So just for fun…

In 1950 (when MomHTP was 5 years old), Monopoly cost $4, a bottle of aspirin cost 54 cents, a Chevy Corvette costs approximately $3,000, a one-way flight from New York to California was only $88, and a pound of coffee cost 79 cents. (Source)

In 1978 (six years before I was born), an Apple II computer cost $1,300, a six-pack of beer was $1.49, a microwave was $168 (dang!), a movie ticket cost about $1, and a pound of coffee was $1.40. (Source)

In 2012 (BabyHTP’s birth year), Monopoly retails for $18.99, a big bottle of aspirin is about $9, a Corvette costs around $50,000, a transcontinental flight can easily run $500,  a pound of nice coffee runs you about $13, a six-pack of domestic beer is about $6, microwaves are no longer the technology of the future and can be $50 or less, and a movie ticket in Charlotte costs about $9.

In 1983 I worked a bunch of over time in order to get my parents a microwave oven for Christmas. It was huge, weighed a ton and cost me $350.00. But that thing still works to this day. It amazes me that they are so small now and cost just $50.00. But they don’t last as long. Funny how things change over time.

    • Caitlin February 22, 2012, 3:11 pm

      Awesome story! I love it.

  • Colleen February 22, 2012, 2:42 pm

Lovin’ the bump! It is so nice to get to that point in your pregancy where people know you are preggers and not just getting big.

  • Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife February 22, 2012, 2:45 pm

Your bump is sooooo cute! I bet you love it when people notice now 🙂

Cheers to getting some sleep tonight!

  • Catalina @ Cake with Love February 22, 2012, 2:45 pm

I am always looking forward to the baby updates post, they are my favorite! I think you are doing a great job, and you are very beautiful pregnant, when a women is pregnant she doesn’t need makeup or expensive close, because I can see happiness on your face, you look amazing! Thanks for sharing your journey!

    • Caitlin February 22, 2012, 3:12 pm

      Thank you so much sweetie.

  • Annie @ Naturally Sweet Recipes February 22, 2012, 2:51 pm

You look great!! It’s so fun to hear about your updates and glad to hear your baby is so healthy and strong. Even if you get kicked once in while. 🙂 It’s too funny seeing that computer, as I work on my iphone. Times are changing, and fast! Best wishes for a continued healthy pregnancy!

  • Chelsea February 22, 2012, 2:51 pm

BabyHTP is strong like herm mama that’s why it’s got such a strong kick hahah ;D!

  • Jen February 22, 2012, 2:55 pm

Love the bump! I’m 16 weeks today, and while I can definitely tell I’m pregnant in the mirror- I’m still in the stage where a stranger would be unsure. And I can’t wait to feel the kicks, only little movements so far.

    • Caitlin February 22, 2012, 3:12 pm

      Congrats on being 16 weeks!

  • Haley February 22, 2012, 2:55 pm

You look awesome!! You have the cutest bump.

What jumped out at me the most about this post though is…when did Monopoly become round??

  • Kristen February 22, 2012, 2:59 pm

I look forward to your baby updates each week as I am just about 2 days behind you..I turn 24 weeks on Friday.

    • Caitlin February 22, 2012, 3:12 pm

      Happy 24 weeks!

  • Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat February 22, 2012, 3:04 pm

Aww you’re such a cute pregnant lady! Life is allowed to get in the way sometimes – don’t worry! I’m sure you’ll have a much more on-track week ahead now that you’ve told the blog world you’re going to. Sounds like Charlotte is a little cheaper than here in Ontario for movies.. although I know there’s a currency conversion, ours are about $11 + tax!

  • MaryBe February 22, 2012, 3:11 pm

My parents bought one of the original microwave ovens too. Theirs is called a radarange, and people were afraid to use it ha. They still have it, it works great. It’s huge!
Also, are you sure your Mom was 5 years old in 1950? That would make her around 67…I’ve seen her on your blog and she looks great!

    • Caitlin February 22, 2012, 3:13 pm

Yup! She was born in 1945. 🙂 She’s a pretty rockin’ lady; I agree.

      • Shauna February 23, 2012, 3:50 am

Heh, I was just coming on here to ask the same question. I can’t believe it! I’ve always thought your mom was beautiful, and that was before I knew she defied the laws of time and aging. She definitely does not look anywhere near her age. You and BabyHTP have got some good genes 😉

  • Jill February 22, 2012, 3:12 pm

If you really want to compare prices you should account for inflation. For example, that $4 game of Monopoly from 1950 is equivalent to $37.15 in 2011 dollars so actually Monopoly today at $18.99 seems like a pretty good deal. Same with the plane ticket which is much cheaper today since the flight at $88 dollars in 1950 is equivalent to $817.88 in 2011 dollars. Microwaves are definitely cheaper today and same with computers and some of the products are about equivalent across time like the six-pack and aspirin. It’s definitely fun to see how prices have fluctuated over time!

    • Caitlin February 22, 2012, 3:13 pm

      oh fun factoids!!!

  • Claire February 22, 2012, 3:17 pm

Is it weird that I look forward to Wednesdays because I love reading what BabyHTP has been up to?

    • Caitlin February 23, 2012, 8:53 am

Aw thanks Claire 🙂 I appreciate it.

  • Nicole February 22, 2012, 3:18 pm

You really popped this week! I love looking at the cost of various items over time, when I was young I remember being amazed when my mom and grandma would talk about how much certain things would cost them growing up.

  • Johanna B February 22, 2012, 3:19 pm

I’ll take a pound of that 79 cent coffee. You can’t get one cup for that these days and I’m addicted to the stuff.

  • Rebecca February 22, 2012, 3:19 pm

Wow! These weeks seem to be flying by! You look great! Your bump has certainly “popped’! Hope you have a nice time with MomHTP!

  • Brittney February 22, 2012, 3:19 pm

You look great Caitlin! What’s up with the circular Monopoly board?! I have not seen one like this!

  • Coco February 22, 2012, 3:31 pm

Are the 2012 ones stats or your personal experience?

Just wondering because $13 for a pound of coffee seems like a lot.

    • Rebecca February 22, 2012, 4:12 pm

Google’s got 12-oz bags of Weaver’s French Roast coffee for $22, and 1-pound bags of Starbucks for $15. Starbucks’ website has 1-pound bags of coffee ranging from $12 to like $15 depending on the blend.
      Not that I care (I don’t drink coffee), but…

    • Emily G. February 22, 2012, 4:13 pm

I would say personal experience. I bought a pound of coffee today for $2.19. With that being said – it was also store brand and on sale. Even when it isn’t on sale, it’s only about $7.

    • Caitlin February 23, 2012, 8:53 am

I was thinking of Starbucks coffee, for what it is worth!

  • Amanda February 22, 2012, 3:34 pm

You look wonderful! I really love reading all of these posts (along with Gina at Fitnessista and Emily at DailyGarnish). I’m engaged and nowhere near having a baby, but I find it interesting and so appreciate the honesty!

  • Katie @ Peace Love & Oats February 22, 2012, 3:39 pm

Haha that’s great that you’re clearly pregnant now, I often see women on the bus and I’m afraid that by offering them my seat (thinking that they are pregnant) I’ll end up insulting them if they aren’t…

  • Alex @ Raw Recovery February 22, 2012, 3:42 pm

Wow 24 weeks that is so exciting! Definitely rest up! Traveling while not pregnant is still exhausting. I was on a plane yesterday and caught a really bad cold so I’m not going to push myself to workout while I have a fever. Not a great idea.

  • Sonia the Mexigarian February 22, 2012, 3:47 pm

I love hearing about BabyHTP weekly updates. You’re positively glowing!

Hubby and I just had the “talk” last night. Eeep.

    • Caitlin February 23, 2012, 8:54 am

      Do itttttttttttttt

  • Lisa (bakebikeblog) February 22, 2012, 3:55 pm

Here’s hoping you get some rest soon!

  • Stephanie @ Legally Blinde February 22, 2012, 3:55 pm

You look great! Hope you can get some rest and start to feel a little more energized 🙂 Maybe some more acupuncture is in order? I swear by Celestial Seasonings Sleepytime tea, too!

  • Joyce February 22, 2012, 4:05 pm

You look very good. Concerning the itchy skin – keep it moisturized. I used cocoa butter when I was pregnant and I have no stretch marks. That was 32 years ago.

  • Rebecca February 22, 2012, 4:16 pm

Yay for progress! And viability. I was born at 28 weeks and am totally fine, but it was definitely a scare for my parents.

My dad was born in 57, and he remembers when gas was less than $1 a gallon. But then, minimum wage was way different as well.
It costs me about $6 to go to a movie in my hometown, but where I’m going to school it’s $10 at the closest theater. Ugh.

    • Nadine February 22, 2012, 7:24 pm

I was a 28 weeker, too, back in 1971, that was a big deal. Babies survive much smaller and micro-preemie than that now, though.

  • kate February 22, 2012, 4:20 pm

I used cocoa butter, shea butter, vitamin E, EVERYTHING I could get my hands on while I was pregnant, including drinking water like a camel. I still have such bad stretch marks 🙁

Do yourself a favor though, its recommended that you DON’T ITCH your belly. I tried not to but I did and I wonder if it made a difference….

    • Jen February 23, 2012, 9:41 pm

…do you mean “scratch” your belly? How does one “itch” their belly? 🙂

  • Sara February 22, 2012, 4:20 pm

You are so beautiful, Caitlin! Inside and out. Love these updates!

  • Kristen@Change of Pace February 22, 2012, 4:35 pm

My daughter was born at 28 weeks. My water broke at 24 weeks so I laid on bed rest with her until she was born. She is perfectly fine. I can still remember what those kicks feel like! My son used to push instead of kick but it still hurt!

  • poptartyogini February 22, 2012, 4:36 pm

quite the adorable baby bump you have yourself there! i wish i could go back and snag one of those $3000 corvettes. i agree that exercising while exhausted probably isn’t effective. take care of yourself!!

  • Amber @ Busy, Bold, Blessed February 22, 2012, 4:39 pm

Yay for everyone knowing you’re about to be a mama (and not just think you’re fat hehe)! You look great, love these updates 😀

  • Ann @ Turbo Teacher February 22, 2012, 4:52 pm

I love this post and all of this baby talk!! I am excited for you and all of the soon-to-be-Mommys in my life right now! You look great!!

  • Jolene (www.everydayfoodie.ca) February 22, 2012, 5:37 pm

Wow, a 6 pack of beer is cheap in the US!!! It is at least double that in Canada! Even for the crappy stuff.

  • Brittnie (A Joy Renewed) February 22, 2012, 6:08 pm

I hate to tell you but the itching does not get any better (or at least for me!). I am 29 weeks 5 days and oh my goodness my stomach, back, and sides itch ALL the time. 🙂

  • Katie @ Soulshine and Sassafras February 22, 2012, 6:10 pm

    You look so damn cute!

  • Linz @ Itz Linz February 22, 2012, 6:34 pm

I love your updates! It’s amazing how much has changed… Oliver the years and throughout your pregnancy!

  • jen February 22, 2012, 7:11 pm

you look so pretty with no makeup!!! 🙂 i always think it is a FACT i look so much prettier with makeup on… do we all tell ourselves this?

    • Caitlin February 23, 2012, 8:56 am

Thank you 🙂 I know I am not going to tell myself that anymore after the naked face!

  • MelanieF February 22, 2012, 7:12 pm

I rarely comment, but I wanted to say that I think you look amazing!

  • Kelly February 22, 2012, 8:01 pm

    Food for thought
I work in old car insurance and thought this would be interesting.

That 1950 vette in pic is worth is actually 53 and worth upwards of $200,000, and your 78 Era vette…can top out in $50,000 value depending on options. Its ironic how much they cost then versus what they are now.

    Congratulations on 24 Weeks!!! 🙂

    • Caitlin February 23, 2012, 8:56 am

Damn. Wish I had bought one.

  • Katie @ Talk Less, Say More February 22, 2012, 9:06 pm

Congrats on 24 weeks! Keeping getting strong BabyHTP!
I work for Apple and I think it’s pretty awesome that the price of an Apple computer hasn’t really changed. (Depending on the model, of course!)

  • Jen February 22, 2012, 10:29 pm

Hey Caitlin, You are looking great at week 24!

I was meaning to ask you about the Naked Face Project and doing your public presentations – how do you feel about speaking in front of a large group without make-up, etc.?? Has there been a different reaction?? AND – would you consider doing this if say…you were going on the Today show tomorrow to promote your new books?? 🙂 Would love to hear your thoughts/experience on this – here or a new post even!

    • Caitlin February 23, 2012, 8:59 am

I might write about this today!

If I was on the Today show during the project, obviously I wouldn’t wear makeup. I’ve been on two local news segments since starting the project and didn’t wear makeup! I’m not sure of my policy post-project. I’ve got 4 more weeks to figure it out!

      • Jen February 23, 2012, 9:44 pm

That’s awesome! It’s really “brave” of you to do this. I’m so insecure; I hardly wear any makeup anyways (only at work I’ll put on a little eyeshadow and mascara but that’s it – just to brighten my eyes – I have really light eyebrows and it washes me out). I feel like if I don’t wear it, people at work don’t look at me the same or think I look young, less professional and so plain.

I wonder how you would feel about doing this project if you weren’t married as well? That’s another killer – I’m single and there’s enough competition out there as is!

  • Kath February 22, 2012, 10:35 pm

Love it when I see BabyHTP in the subject line 🙂 So fun you’re feeling so much movement!

  • Irina Soares February 23, 2012, 1:50 am

Congrats on the bump… something you said alerted me – you should not be dehydrated when pregnant especially in your 2nd/3d trimester – make sure you DRINK plenty of water – dehydration may cause premature labor. Please please please drink water, it is not an old wive’s tale 🙂 take care and good luck with finalizing the house.

    • Caitlin February 23, 2012, 8:59 am

      I’m chugging!!!!! Thanks!!!

  • Jen February 23, 2012, 2:20 am

    Wow, girl! You look bumptastic!!!

    • Jen February 23, 2012, 2:23 am

Also, when someone asks when you’re due, I think that it would be funny to put on a totally innocent expression & say “Due for what?”

Okay, NO. Not funny, just plain mean…what is wrong with me today? 🙂

      • Caitlin February 23, 2012, 8:59 am

        hahahaha

  • Charity February 23, 2012, 7:21 am

    I love your pregnancy posts!

  • CJ @ http://healthy-happy-whole.com February 23, 2012, 7:57 am

oh my goodness that is crazy to see the differences in price! i wonder what college costs in the 60’s because it is absolutely ridiculous now!

  • Emily February 23, 2012, 8:23 am

Holy smokes! 10 weeks makes a HUGE difference. But youare definitely looking beautiful, and hopefully you start feeling like yourself again soon!

  • Diana @ frontyardfoodie February 23, 2012, 8:42 am

yay! So glad the hubby could feel the little chicky move.

I love feeling the movements, even if they do sometimes hurt quite a bit. I’m about three weeks farther along so I am definitely starting to get uncomfortable. I hope you’re sleeping well!

  • Carolina John February 23, 2012, 9:01 am

Stretch marks are just the tiger earning her stripes. Embrace it. and put cocoa butter on, it will help the itching.

I learned never to assume a girl is pregnant unless I can actually see the baby starting to crown. Even then I would try to approach with some discretion.

  • Britt @ The Busy Bee Writes February 23, 2012, 9:29 am

You are absolutely glowing! So happy for you and your adorable little bump!

  • Amber K February 23, 2012, 2:07 pm

Aw, gotta love that cute baby bump! Interesting factoids! 🙂

  • Carolyn @ cool beans February 23, 2012, 2:24 pm

When my parents got married in 1985, everyone chipped in to buy them a $600 microwave!

When I got married in August, we springed for our own – $80! I thought that was a ridiculous price for a microwave.

Guess whose microwave still works?! >:S

  • Danielle February 23, 2012, 10:28 pm

I can’t believe movie tickets are only $9 in Charlotte. They’re $13 where I live!

  • Victoria March 3, 2012, 8:40 pm

hi! I found your blog through Take10withTricia – she is a close friend. I’m in charlotte too and will check your blog out more now that I know you are local. Saw that you are preg. and hope for a low interventional birth – I hope you are searching for a doula – makes all the difference in the world!!! I’m happy to give a reference too if you need one – not that you know me – but I have gone through 3 midwife births, two with doulas and the first without – cannot reccomend having one there enough! Good luck to you!!!
