Airport Fare

in All Posts

Back to Charlotte – but just for the night.  And then I’m off to the University of Delaware!  And then, I’ll return home for another night and leave for Miami.  Whew.  My grand plan is to simply dump the contents of my suitcase directly into my washing machine every time I come home and re-wear the same three outfits for all of my speaking events.  Hah!

Airport eats:

Dear Starbucks Oatmeal:  You are amazing.  You may not be my version of ‘perfect,’ but you’re pretty darn close and I can find you anywhere.

Oh, here’s a snack that I did actually find amazing – Two Moms in the Raw Blueberry Granola bar.  Super crunchy (my jaw hurt at the end!) but really, really tasty.  I bet it would taste great crumbled over vanilla yogurt.

30,000 feet in the air:  an apple.

Let’s debate:  red or green apples?  I vote red.  I really don’t like sour green apples that much.  My favorite red variety is Gala!

And a big salad with apples, pecans, veggies, chickpeas, and blue cheese.  I stunk up the entire office with the cheese (I went directly from the airport to the clinic – whirlwind, to say the least!).

Lunch was my favorite today: a Trader Joe’s masala veggie burger with a sliced yellow bell pepper and cilantro jalepeno hummus and to drink, a glass of orange, peach mango juice

  • Jessie B. February 29, 2012, 5:15 pm

That IS a lot of traveling! Enjoy DE while you are here (I don’t live too far from UD). You should try Home Grown Cafe… http://www.homegrowncafe.com/

    • katy February 29, 2012, 8:04 pm

i was going to suggest the same thing! homegrown is the best, and ohhh i miss UD 🙂

      • Caitlin February 29, 2012, 8:46 pm

        Someone else said that, too!!!

  • Caroline @ After Dinner Dance February 29, 2012, 5:17 pm

    Homemade hummus yum 🙂

  • Becca @ Blueberry Smiles February 29, 2012, 5:17 pm

I ate a perfectly ripe pear after lunch and it was so delicious!

I often stink up my office…..usually with leftover broccoli or something like that. haha, oh well.

  • Jen February 29, 2012, 5:20 pm

I vote yellow apples! I love golden delicious apples, they’re my favorite. Red apples are a close second, and Galas are my favorite variety of that hue.

The best thing I ate today was probably tomato soup with veggies and lentils. Although the homemade mocha I just drank was really really delicious and I want another one haha.

  • Kristen@Change of Pace February 29, 2012, 5:20 pm

Look at your belly in the apple picture!!! SO CUTE! Red all the way. I’m loving organic galas. At the moment I’m eating pizza and it’s delicious!

  • Allie February 29, 2012, 5:24 pm

I love green, but my favorite at the moment is called Jazz. They’re sweet, crunchy, and taste like candy. Noms.

I haven’t really eaten that well today, but an Udi bagel with Earth Balance was pretty delicious :D.

  • Moira February 29, 2012, 5:26 pm

so jealous you are going to UD! I’m an alum and you will love your short time there!

  • Rebecca February 29, 2012, 5:28 pm

A freshly baked bagel with butter! Always a treat! I prefer green apples. My favorite are Granny Smith ones.

  • Catalina @ Cake with Love February 29, 2012, 5:30 pm

My favorite red apple is red delicious, number two is fuji, and gala after that 🙂 I grew up eating red delicious right from my grand parents garden, they are super crunchy and sweet! Childhood memories, so good to have them while away from my family! p.s. Love how your bump now appear in the photos 🙂

  • chelsey @ clean eating chelsey February 29, 2012, 5:30 pm

    Sweet potato fries!!!

  • Emily February 29, 2012, 5:38 pm

I vote for green apples! Granny Smith FTW!

  • Katie @ Katie Without Restrictions February 29, 2012, 5:40 pm

Wow, those airport eats are pretty impressive! I have to vote red apples… I love galas, braeburns, and pink ladies. Growing up, I would only eat green apples, and now I find them too sour ~ my taste buds have matured I guess! 😉

  • Laura February 29, 2012, 5:50 pm

Homemade bread and jam for breakfast this morning, then a homemade chicken burger and fries on a Venerdi gluten-free bun for lunch – so good! 🙂

  • Kristin February 29, 2012, 5:52 pm

I’m a student at UD! I will definitely try to make it to the presentation 🙂 and I agree with the homegrown recommendation- excellent food for vegetarians/anyone gluten free!

  • Tanya February 29, 2012, 6:03 pm

    That salad looks delicious.

Best thing I ate today: oatmeal 🙂

    best apples: honeycrisp

  • Emily February 29, 2012, 6:04 pm

The best thing I ate today…by far…steamed vegetable dumplings. LOVE!

I am a gala apple fan too.

  • Erin February 29, 2012, 6:10 pm

I like granny smiths on things like grilled cheese sandwiches but prefer honey crisp or Fuji if I’m just going to eat one. But I’m not a fan of red delicious or golden delicious. Too mealy!

  • Erin February 29, 2012, 6:10 pm

Oh, also, you must not have very many things can’t go in the dryer! I swear half my clothes need to hang to dry.

    • Caitlin February 29, 2012, 8:47 pm

Haha I never buy clothes that need to be ironed or hung up to dry.

  • Stephanie @ Legally Blinde February 29, 2012, 6:10 pm

Nice salad combo! I like Gala apples, too, but my favorite are Honeycrisp. Yum. The most delicious thing I ate today was a huge salad of spinach, broccoli, grape tomatoes, kalamata olives, artichoke hearts, a hard-boiled egg, edamame, sunflower seeds, fresh basil, hummus, balsamic vinegar, and couscous.

  • Lauren February 29, 2012, 6:27 pm

I’m partial to Pink Lady apples myself. But granny smith are good for baking, right? I wouldn’t know, I don’t bake. 🙂

  • Kelly February 29, 2012, 6:29 pm

I am super picky about my apples…I really only like pink ladies.

  • Kelley February 29, 2012, 6:40 pm

Do you get nervous about ‘unpasteurized’ cheeses like Blue Cheese? I’m also about 26 weeks pregnant and I am not that nervous about it, but wondering what your thoughts were. I started out paranoid, but now take a more laid back approach because I love CHEESE!

    • Caitlin February 29, 2012, 8:48 pm

No… I don’t really get nervous about anything like that. Have you read Panic Free Pregnancy?

      • Kelley February 29, 2012, 9:29 pm

No I haven’t, but I heard good things. I should go check it out and specifically read the chapter on what you can/can’t eat. I’m glad you’ve had a relaxed attitude about the pregnancy. It’s so refreshing since you hear horror stories all the time about things like BLUE CHEESE! lol

  • Jill Will Run February 29, 2012, 6:41 pm

I like gala and pink lady apples, I do like granny smith but not all the time. But in no way will I ever eat a red delicious apple because I think they’re just mealy and gross!

The most delicious thing I ate today? Probably some scrambled egg whites… it’s what my pregnancy palate was craving!

  • Madeline - Greens and Jeans February 29, 2012, 6:57 pm

I travel a ton for work and that’s pretty much what I do! No one knows I’m wearing the same thing all the time and it saves me from having to think too hard when I’m packing!

  • Karlee February 29, 2012, 6:57 pm

i wish i had somewhere nearby like that where i could get a good looking salad to go!

  • jo February 29, 2012, 6:59 pm

Yummiest thing I ate today (and in a while!) was a huge sandwich from exki (fancy european all-organic eatery that I don’t normally splurge on) containing ciabatta bread, brie cheese, tomatoes, roquette (arugula) and yummy condiments I couldn’t all name. The difference between regular food and bio/organic, and the store’s awesomely green policy made it that more delicious!

  • Tricia February 29, 2012, 7:17 pm

I’m prone to green, granny smith to be exact. It’s the kind my mom always brought home, and made her homemade apple crisp. Plus the red ones are a tad too sweet for me. I have a sour pallet as opposed to sweet.

  • Lindsey February 29, 2012, 7:25 pm

Fro-yo finally! We are on holidays and had not had any in months! Finally able to enjoy it a few times this next week 🙂

  • Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife February 29, 2012, 7:29 pm

That salad look AHHHHmazing. YUM. Kind of want one now…. might have to go scrounge for something like it 😉 I also had a delicious berry spinach smoothie with choc milk in it–soooo good!

  • Sara February 29, 2012, 8:05 pm

It will be Girl Scout cookies w/ Modern Family later!

  • Stephanie February 29, 2012, 8:12 pm

Where do you get these yummy looking salads you always post??

    • Caitlin February 29, 2012, 9:10 pm

      Bad Daddy’s burger bar!

  • Katie @ Peace Love & Oats February 29, 2012, 8:24 pm

Gala apples are my favorite too!!!!

  • Lyn @ Life Lyn Style February 29, 2012, 8:34 pm

I think your travel food topped Kath’s today. I love red apples. I just bought 4 pounds of gala for $1 a pound this evening.

  • Kristin February 29, 2012, 8:46 pm

Pink Lady apples all the way. I’m absolutely spoiled for all other apples.

  • Caitlin February 29, 2012, 9:50 pm

university of de is such a cute university!

  • Katie @ Talk Less, Say More February 29, 2012, 10:25 pm

    Whew that salad looks yummy!

  • Khushboo Thadani March 1, 2012, 12:24 am

I’m definitely all about the green apples lately- love the tartness paired with lots of cinnamon on top!

  • Laura @ She Eats Well March 1, 2012, 12:41 am

Mmm. I’m eating a sweet potato with some earth balance and almond butter (crunchy, raw)…it works, trust! So delicious. Also, I agree about the oatmeal at Starbucks but when are they going to get on the gluten free train…!? Dying for some gf options there, in terms of baked stuff.

  • hilary March 1, 2012, 7:45 am

Looks yummy!!!!! i’m going to have to try this! my favorite salad is spinach, with gala apple slices AND granny smith apple slices, sunflower seeds, feta, and a little olive oil. soooo good!

  • Coco March 1, 2012, 8:14 am

I really love granny smith, they are my all time favorite! But I do love Pink Lady apples too.. well I pretty much like all apples EXCEPT for red delicious- those are just gross..

  • Ashley @ Cooking for John March 1, 2012, 9:41 am

Pink lady apples all the way! But I do enjoy a sour green apple once in awhile as well.

I tried those Two Moms in the Raw bars and couldn’t even finish them. There was some flavor that was totally disgusting to me. I can’t remember what it was though. Glad you liked it though!

  • Reenie March 1, 2012, 10:22 am

Let’s debate: red or green apples? Neither….it’s gotta be PINK!! Pink Lady a/k/a Honey Crisp. =)

  • Amber K March 1, 2012, 3:03 pm

Red apples will always be > green apples. Honeycrisp and Pink Ladys especially.

  • Claire Zulkey March 1, 2012, 5:18 pm

I make my own version of Starbucks oatmeal at home. I make oats and add 1 tbl each of brown sugar, craisins, yellow raisins and walnuts and if I have some, a date or a fig, cut up. Sprinkle with pumpkin pie spice.

  • Kath March 1, 2012, 9:37 pm

    Red apples all the way!!

And love how your bump looks from above 🙂

  • Adina March 2, 2012, 12:54 am

Our taste in food is one in the same. Red all the way, gala is the best. Starbucks oatmeal is a dream, those mom’s in the raw bars are the bast and that salad looks perfect.

Fruit is always the most delicious thing I eat! That and almond butter…
