Wanderer

in All Posts

I woke up with one thought in my head: “Not all who wander are lost.”  Maybe the thought was from a dream – or maybe it just randomly popped into my head – but it startled me to wake up and remember such a quote with a sense of certainly and calm.  Obviously, there’s lots of life changes going on in the HTP household, but I haven’t felt overwhelmed once.  It’s just a journey.  I expect not to know what the heck I’m doing or feeling half the time.  I’m not lost.  I’m just finding my way.

Deep Thought Tuesday Wednesday! <— Pregnancy brain kicking in.

Brain fuel for such a philosophical morning:

Eggy and toast:

Like I said – really into smoothies lately.  Seems like a weird craving for December, but the habit is helping me pack in the nutrients.  I just wear a hoodie while I drink it!

1/3 pineapple juice

1/3 orange juice

1/3 soy milk

Frozen strawberries

Gonna take the pupper for a long walk (kind of sad because it wasn’t a long swim, but yesterday’s workout killed me – everything from my fingertips to toes are sore), and then it’s time to get to bed work (wishful thinking?).

Are you wandering, too?

    get to bed?

  • Marie December 14, 2011, 8:21 am

    Psst! It’s Wednesday!

    • Heather December 14, 2011, 8:23 am

@Marie: all day long yesterday, I thought it was Wednesday. It is much more fun to realize you are one day CLOSER to the weekend, than one day farther away!!

      • Amy December 14, 2011, 8:32 am

@Heather: I did too! What is it about this week??

  • Lisa D December 14, 2011, 8:22 am

teehee..Deep Thought Wednesday? guess you really were deep in thought!

  • Mark December 14, 2011, 8:23 am

Haha, the chronology is off in this post. Waking up, breakfast, followed by bed? Deep Thought Tuesday…on a Wednesday? The swim was mentioned as yesterday, so I assume this wasn’t written last night. I’m all confused!

  • Amy December 14, 2011, 8:23 am

Bed? Tuesday? Sounds like you have pregnancy brain 🙂 — but don’t worry, it’s a VERY REAL PHENOMENON! Ha!

I think you will also find, as I have, that what was a totally routine/easy workout pre-pregnancy will wipe you out now. Just go with it. Your body is very busy these days.

  • Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat December 14, 2011, 8:27 am

LOL on the smoothie thing – I’ve been drinking them every day and am wrapped up in a blanket sipping one right now!

  • Prairie Simple December 14, 2011, 8:28 am

I don’t care if this is from yesterday or today. Breakfast looks slammin’!

  • mi-an d. December 14, 2011, 8:29 am

my life sums out that quote! 🙂 i’m always a wanderer and that doesn’t mean i am lost. 🙂

  • kathleen @ the daily crumb December 14, 2011, 8:35 am

definitely agree! i have no idea where i am or where i’m going half the time… but i’m figuring it out. it’s all part of the journey.

  • Katherine December 14, 2011, 8:36 am

This post is so timely for me. I just put in my 2 weeks notice at my very comfortable, reliable job. I am starting a new, scary one in January and I am feeling overwhelmed by the changes that I know are coming. I really want to focus and find the strength within to be successful, happy, and sane. This is, after all, what I wished for!

Thank you so much for the encouraging words Caitlin!

    • Annie December 14, 2011, 7:30 pm

      How interesting and inspiring!

What job are you leaving behind and what one are you pursuing?

  • Amanda December 14, 2011, 8:45 am

I am also a wanderer, but I’m now wandering in the general direction of where I think I want to go. 🙂

Your smoothie sounds great! I love the pineapple/orange combo.

  • Athena @ Fitness & Feta December 14, 2011, 8:53 am

I am definitely wandering! Trying to figure out how to make my passions my career long term. It’s not an easy path!

  • Faith @ For the Health of It December 14, 2011, 9:01 am

Im definitely in a wandering phase. Between navigating a long-term relationship and not really loving living alone in Orlando, I’m working on finding a better situation for both of those parts of my life…but still trying to find the good in where I am right here in the here and now.

  • Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife December 14, 2011, 9:05 am

Great thoughts! EVerything is a journey–and a wonderful one at that! 🙂

i LOVE a good smoothie. ANd eggs are the best!

  • HilaryJo December 14, 2011, 9:10 am

Its a line from a poem in the Lord of the Rings!! “All that is gold does not glitter, not all who wander are lost, the old that is strong does not whither, deep roots are not reached by the frost…” (nerd alert).

What a great way to wake up!

  • HRCK @ http://hrcktheherald.wordpress.com December 14, 2011, 9:10 am

I LOVE that quotation and I think of it often. I also remember it as being one of the few yearbook quotes that it isn’t very cheesy/cliche to look back on!

Another favorite is “a ship in the harbor is safe, but that is not why ships were built.”

  • Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga December 14, 2011, 9:18 am

I’ve spent my entire life wandering. Both literally (have lived and/or moved in about 6 states and about 15 different homes in the past decade) to figuratively…soul searching for what will fulfill me…and it’s always a journey.

    Awesome post.

And the smoothie shot. Slurp. I want that 🙂

  • Khushboo December 14, 2011, 9:27 am

I think you should pull out the pregnancy card and take an afternoon nap!

  • Gina @ Running to the Kitchen December 14, 2011, 9:34 am

I’d like to get back to bed right about now too 🙂 I feel like I spent the last 3 years of my life wandering but I think I’ve finally come to some sort of clarity/place of “peace” as cheesy as that sounds. Finally.

  • Carolina John December 14, 2011, 9:35 am

ha! Glad the swim worked out so well. I like the philosophical you. Pregnancy brain is a very real and fun concept.

  • Rebecca @ Naturally Healthy and Gorgeous December 14, 2011, 9:40 am

I wish I could be more of a wanderer. I tend to be a control freak but I think it’s healthier to be able to go with the flow.

  • Anna December 14, 2011, 9:42 am

Hmm I feel I am cemented in a “direction” in life in going back to school and pursuing an RD but yes I definitely feel I wander daily! Right now I wish I could wander back into bed too!

  • Johanna B December 14, 2011, 9:45 am

Love the color of your smoothie. Will have to recreate. Thanks for including the ingredients.

  • Army Amy* December 14, 2011, 9:47 am

Your smoothie is calling my name! I usually eat an apple a day, but I ran out and haven’t been to the store yet. My fruit levels are low!*

  • Sarah December 14, 2011, 10:07 am

Yes!!! Lots of things are happening on our household too. It’s kind of fun to think that we don’t know where we will be in a year (but very scary too). Happpy Hump Day!

  • Tiff @ Love Sweat & Beers December 14, 2011, 10:13 am

Oh my, I must have preg brain too, but I’m not preg. haha

I’m wandering a bit as well, but I don’t wander far from home. I’m fairly grounded right now, which is actually kind of nice.

  • Meredith December 14, 2011, 10:47 am

What a cute stinking puppy you have!!! I have a thing for black dogs with brown eyebrows.

I also wanted to shout out a huge THANK YOU for highlighting the rescuing of shelter dogs lately. This is a cause near and dear to my heart. I volunteer with a group in Ohio known as Paws & Prayers.

Maybe mention that for anyone in any part of the county to search for a dog or cat to adopt, they can use Petfinder.com. It is a fabulous website that will link you to thousands of shelters. Everyone can find the animal they want on there. There is never any reason to buy a dog when millions are killed each year due to overpopulation.

    • Caitlin December 14, 2011, 12:30 pm

      Thank you so much Meredith!

  • Anna December 14, 2011, 10:53 am

Not to be a total nerd (okay, actually, I don’t care) but I love that entire poem from Lord of the Rings!
“All that is gold does not glitter,
    Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost….”

    • Caitlin December 14, 2011, 12:30 pm

      🙂 LOTR forever!

  • Allison December 14, 2011, 10:56 am

I’m most definitely wandering at times. I didn’t like my desk job so I decided on a career change one year ago! After one whole year pursuing a second degree I’m feel I’m finding my way more and more every day. Life is a journey!

  • Stellina December 14, 2011, 11:04 am

That quote is very enlightening I feel like I am “wandering” right now because I am on the search for a new job. I sometimes feel lost because I am not even quite sure what it is that I am looking for, but if I just say I am wandering it makes me feel like I am not as lost!

  • Elisabeth December 14, 2011, 11:42 am

Love that thought about wandering! I feel sort of like I’ve been wandering through life the last couple years because I’ve been trying to figure out what I realy want to do with life (the current career just isn’t doing it for me), but I’ve been bit afraid to take a leap out my semi-comfortable current position. I think a lot of the feeling of wandering is due to not knowing exactly what I want & feeling like I’ve spent too long trying to figure out what this is. 😉

    • Caitlin December 14, 2011, 12:30 pm

There’s something to be said for stable employment 🙂 I think thats why I like volunteering so much. It helps fulfill me even when I can’t get it from work.

  • Sonia (the Mexigarian) December 14, 2011, 11:53 am

I’ve been wandering for a long time. I’m lucky to have my Hubby as a beacon though so I can find my way back, before I go off and wander again.

  • keepingsteady December 14, 2011, 12:13 pm

Gotta say… that’s a good quote and everything, but I don’t quite understand how you see it applying to you. You aren’t “wandering” … you’re married, pregnant, with a stable job and a business. If anything, you’re settled. I’m on my 3rd degree in a different subject, after working at 2 different jobs, and traveling for 6 months, with no husband/boyfriend/city that I call home. And I’m the same age as you. I just feel like calling yourself a “wanderer” is almost hilarious… what does that make me? A complete disaster?

    • CaitlinHTP December 14, 2011, 12:14 pm

@keepingsteady: I don’t think you should assume you know everything going on in my life 🙂 Can’t spill all the deets!

Traveling for 6 months sounds fun!! Where are you going?

      • R. Chandra December 14, 2011, 1:48 pm

i agree. it’s interesting when you hear from someone how they see your life due to what they know/what you present… i’m usually like “whaaat! no way/haha” or some other surprised reaction. if it’s a good thing, i try to look at it as a compliment, even if there is a lot more going on beneath the “surface”. 🙂

    • jamie@cueyourlife December 14, 2011, 1:37 pm

I have jumbled 2 of my favorite quotes together for a response to this, “Never compare your insides with someone else’s outsides. Each of us are fighting our own battles. Be kind to others, and to yourself. You never know the battle the person next to you is fighting.”

Also, for me…it is when others view me as most “Settled” that I feel the most out of control…waiting for the other shoe to drop. ; ) Just a thought.

    • Annie December 14, 2011, 7:36 pm

I’ve considered going for a different degree also. What degrees do you have and which are you pursuing? I enjoy engaging with others in this situation!

    • Annie December 14, 2011, 7:37 pm

I keep trying to reply to KeepingSteady but it won’t reply there. I’m not sure why.

  • Jenn December 14, 2011, 12:19 pm

I have that quote in a frame on my wall right when you walk in the front door. Love it!

    Testing 123…

    • Caitlin December 14, 2011, 12:28 pm

4 5 6! Did you get the email?

      • Sarah December 14, 2011, 12:44 pm

        No 🙁

Think it’s possible my gmail account is blocking it? I checked and it’s not in spam.

  • Candice @ Sailing on Paper December 14, 2011, 12:24 pm

I feel like I’m ALWAYS wandering. Maybe life in general is just a wandering path. Kind of cheesy, but possibly true. Whenever I feel like I’m “settled,” something happens to uproot me. It’s kind of scary to accept that you are never fully in control of everything going on.

  • Katie @ Peace Love and Oats December 14, 2011, 12:31 pm

I am most definitely a wanderer, I have no idea where I’m headed in life and just trying to take it week by week!

  • Laura December 14, 2011, 12:33 pm

Husband and I are wandering… alot.

  • Jessica @ The Process of Healing December 14, 2011, 12:48 pm

I LOVE that quote!! As an almost 24 year old still in school and STILL not quite sure what I want to do with my life… I feel this way a lot.

  • Laura @ She Eats Well December 14, 2011, 1:00 pm

Life is a journey! That is what I always tell myself when I am feeling especially lost.

And I am enjoying a smoothie for breakfast…despite the chilly air outside in SF. I like to melt peanut butter and drip it into the top of the smoothie… #addictedtopeanutbutter

  • Kayla December 14, 2011, 1:14 pm

I caught that quote somewhere in the world yesterday and have been mulling it over ever since! I love to wander.. and I think I will for the rest of my life. Good to remember that’s not a bad thing. Things will always keep changing.. including me!

  • Jenn December 14, 2011, 1:17 pm

What kind of lens did you use for the pic of your pup? I love it!

    • CaitlinHTP December 14, 2011, 1:52 pm

      Thanks! It’s a tamron 17-50.

  • Sarah@The Flying ONION December 14, 2011, 1:19 pm

Right now I feel that I’m in this “limbo” stage of working part time, not really doing what I love and waiting for the right job to come along. It does a job on the brain after a while, but I really like your thoughts on “wandering.” 😀

I’ve been obsessed with frozen blueberries on cereal lately, which is ridiculous considering how chilly it is! But sometimes you’ve just gotta roll with the cravings. 😀

  • Maria December 14, 2011, 1:20 pm

I am wandering, but I am also extremely lost 😀

  • Katie of Cabbage Ranch December 14, 2011, 1:35 pm

I like to wander. It keeps life interesting, keeps me moving forward, and it also relates closely to wonder (as in childlike wonder, wonderful, etc). Which is almost spelled the same, and that makes a satisfying amount of sense. My work here is done.

  • Amber K December 14, 2011, 1:38 pm

Definitely in a state of wandering right now. Wish I could figure out where it’s leading to.

I crave smoothies year-round and I don’t even get a cool excuse like pregnancy, lol. Just gotta put on extra clothes and blankets on while I sip.

  • Leslie December 14, 2011, 1:44 pm

Bless your little pregnant brain. I think you meant to type certainty but instead typed certainly. I have a hiking t-shirt with that all that wander are not lost quote. I love to hike and that quote always makes me think about wandering down a trail. Have a wonderful day.

  • Kathy December 14, 2011, 2:09 pm

I am usually wandering aimlessly most of the time.. But I am wondering, the 1/3 of the juices for the smoothies, are those cups, or just 1/3 of whatever quantities you use?

On a baby note, if you aren’t around children much before having your own, like I was not, it can be really scarey, but it is true, when they place the baby in your arms, your loving instincts kick in and you won’t have any problems. Yes, you will have days you will cry and feel you are doing everything wrong, but the great days will far outweigh those days and you will be wonderful parents!! We all learn as we go, but don’t let it overwhelm you. Anything new takes getting used to, but it will be old hat before you know it.

  • kyla December 14, 2011, 2:54 pm

That is totally a quote from Lord of the Rings( Nerd alert!) Gandalf says it to Frodo.

But it really is a wonderful quote and has so much to do with life.

  • MLT December 14, 2011, 3:33 pm

Haha, this is a quote from LOTR! It’s part of the song/poem that Bilbo writes for Aragorn. All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost.

  • Katie @ Katie Without Restrictions December 15, 2011, 11:11 am

I love that quote! I think I’m wandering most of the time… But in a very purposeful way! 😉

  • Dee December 15, 2011, 2:19 pm

Nope, I’m not wandering. I’m DEFINITELY lost! But that has its advantages too.
