Easy Vegetable Korma

in All Posts

The Husband comes from a condiment-loving family.  His mother’s fridge is packed so tightly with jars of sauce, jams, and dips that you can barely fit a carton of eggs in.  Every time we go to the store together, he gravitates to the sauce aisle and says, “Think we need some sauces?”

On the other hand, I am not a huge fan of condiments and specialty sauces because they are expensive (and maybe my taste buds are just satisfied by less).  However, I love-love-LOVE this Korma simmer sauce.

Vegetable Korma is my favorite thing to order at Indian restaurants, and while this sauce doesn’t exactly recreate the flavors of an authentic Indian dinner out (its very mild), I love the instant oomph it gives to a dish.

To make this very easy Vegetable Korma, I boiled chunks of yellow potatoes, celery, and carrots until tender, drained the veggies, and mixed in drained white kidney beans and Korma sauce.  I let everything simmer for another 10 minutes.  And tada!  A very tasty lunch.

Sauces aren’t so bad, after all.

Side note:  We watched a REALLY great movie last night.

midnight in paris_m

We select movies based purely on Rotten Tomato reviews.  Unless it’s a raunchy comedy (which hardly never get favorable ratings anyway), we refuse to watch anything rated less than 70% fresh.  When we noticed that Midnight in Paris got a 93%, we HAD to rent it.  And it was great and very, very creative.   It’s about the nostalgia we have for the past and the concept that the ‘grass is always greener.’

Goals:  Finish up work, locate the cleaning fairies (they have been hiding from their dust bunny duties), and get some exercise on.

I wasn’t a big fan of Midnight in Paris. It seemed to drag on a bit for my taste.*

  • Hillary December 29, 2011, 3:16 pm

I watched Midnight in Paris this week too! It was different, but definitely left me thinking. I liked it, even if the ending was a little sudden for my taste.

  • Bridget @ Type A-frame Personality December 29, 2011, 3:18 pm

I loved that movie too. The husband and I always look at rotten tomato before the movie we are seeing. Another good one is “Win Win” if you haven’t seen it!

  • Laura @ She Eats Well December 29, 2011, 3:22 pm

I LOVED Midnight in Paris. I loved all the funny characters that popped up. And…of course, I loved the scenery of Paris. I want to go now!!!

  • Hillary December 29, 2011, 3:25 pm

Midnight in Paris was one of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time. The English major dork inside of me was totally gleeful!

  • Kelli December 29, 2011, 3:27 pm

I grew up in a sauce family, too! A lot of ours were homemade and then jarred, but we always have a full jar just for condiments in our fridge.

I really loved Midnight in Paris (and I’m not traditionally a big Woody Allen or Owen Wilson fan), too! It’s probably the English major in me that was so fond of seeing the Lost Generation actually living in Paris in the 20s.

We do the same thing with Rotten Tomatoes!!! I usually will only go see a movie in the theater if it is above 70% and will rent if above 50%. Our friends sometimes hate us when we say no to movies, but we just can’t bring ourselves to spend a lot on a movie unless it got great ratings!

  • Cheryl December 29, 2011, 3:45 pm

I just watched that movie over the weekend and really liked it too!

  • Sarah December 29, 2011, 3:51 pm

Hmm, I’ve read some great reviews this week on Midnight in Paris, and was on the fence about watching it – now I’m leaning more toward seeing it!

  • Amanda December 29, 2011, 3:56 pm

I just rented that movie! Now I really can’t wait to watch it tonight. 🙂

  • Krissy @ Shiawase Life December 29, 2011, 3:59 pm

Saw that film on a recent flight, really liked it too 🙂

  • Diana @ Sneakers2Sandals December 29, 2011, 4:08 pm

I love Indian inspired food. Last night I made a chickpea soup and used tumeric and it immediately had that flavor.

I want to see that movie but my husband watched it on a plane once or something so now I have to watch it on a night when he’s gone 🙂

  • Penny December 29, 2011, 4:08 pm

That korma looks sooo good! Must try something similar. Thanks for the idea.

Been wanting to see that movie….. 🙂

  • Amber @ Busy, Bold, Blessed December 29, 2011, 4:09 pm

I don’t know why I never thought of this! What a great way to avoid spending $ and time on movies that suck haha. Good call!

  • Jamie @ Don't Forget the Cinnamon December 29, 2011, 4:55 pm

I’m the same way with the rotten tomatoes ratings! It drives my friends crazy because I won’t go to most of the movies they want to see for that reason. $11 is too much money and 2 hours is too much time to waste on a bad movie!!

  • Lisa (bakebikeblog) December 29, 2011, 4:59 pm

    mmm I love korma!

  • HTPDad December 29, 2011, 5:03 pm

I avoid movies directed by people that marry their adopted children. Yuck.

  • Jasmine Myers December 29, 2011, 5:06 pm

Wait. Aren’t you the woman that drinks Mmmm Sauce for breakfast, lunch, and dinner? Sounds like a sauce woman to me! :p

  • Susan December 29, 2011, 5:12 pm

One of the best movies I saw this year! So whimsical and lovely.

  • Gina @ Running to the Kitchen December 29, 2011, 5:20 pm

nostalgia for the past and “the grass is always greener” is pretty much the story of my life. I think I need to see this movie!

  • Allison December 29, 2011, 5:36 pm

    What is in Korma sauce?!

    • Caitlin December 30, 2011, 12:02 pm

It’s a very light curry sauce. It’s tasty!

  • Sarah December 29, 2011, 5:56 pm

I’ve been thinking about seeing Midnight in Paris now, I will rent it with confidence!

  • Christine @ BookishlyB December 29, 2011, 6:14 pm

Love that movie. I wrote a blog post about it recently 🙂

  • Chelsea December 29, 2011, 6:49 pm

Ohh that dish looks muy deliciouso!

  • Katie @ Peace Love & Oats December 29, 2011, 6:52 pm

I remember hearing that got bad reviews, but I saw it and LOVED it!!!!

  • Heather December 29, 2011, 7:02 pm

i am the queen of condiments, myself! Nicholas calls my fridge a “condiment buffet” from time to time!

and i LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVED Midnight in Paris. [though, i love most Woody Allen, so that really wasn’t a shocker!] I was so happy when it was the plane movie on my last flight!

  • Angela December 29, 2011, 7:12 pm

Hmm maybe a love of condiments is a British thing as you really have to look hard to realise there is no actual food in my fridge just jars of random things from the sauce aisle!

  • Debbie December 29, 2011, 7:14 pm

I’ve been reading a lot of Hemingway lately and loved Midnight in Paris! Oh, if only I could hop on a plane and be there!

  • Leoh @ Cupcakes in Paris December 29, 2011, 7:16 pm

I really should watch this movie! I guess, living in Paris, I’m not usually drawn to movies taking place in Paris. But I love Adrien Brodie and Owen Wilson. Marion Cotillard is enchanting and I find our first lady Carla Bruni so classy and mysterious. With such a great cast, this movie has to be awesome.

On a side note, walking along the Seine on a warm summer evening (like Owen Wilson on the poster) is one of my favorite things to do here. I say, forget about the museums when you can walk on the old pavement and admire this beautiful city from the river banks.

Good luck with your goals today!

  • Rebecca @ Naturally Healthy and Gorgeous December 29, 2011, 7:33 pm

I love Indian food although it’s often hard to make. Premade sauces make it easy and delicious!

  • Amy December 29, 2011, 8:01 pm

I haven’t seen Midnight in Paris yet, but I’ve heard great things! I’m not usually a Woody Allen fan, but I might give this one a shot.

I’m really wary of movie reviews. I find that Rotten Tomatoes is often spot-on, except when it comes to “girly” movies (like romantic comedies). Seems like there’s quite a male bias there; they often get terrible scores even if they’re pretty good!

  • Moni'sMeals December 29, 2011, 8:06 pm

    YUM on this dish!

I also just saw this movie…I LOVED and ADORED IT, was fantastic. 🙂

  • Andrea @ MainelyVeggies December 29, 2011, 8:43 pm

Love the seeds of change sauces! Have you tried the Jalfrezi? Its my favorite!

  • Amanda's Notebook December 29, 2011, 9:34 pm

My husband was born and raised in London and he also LOVES sauces. Meals for him are based on the sauce we can buy or he can make.

    Must be a British thing!

  • sherry December 30, 2011, 5:31 am

I just bought some of this sauce for the first time, not sure what I was going to create with it thank for the idea!

  • Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin December 30, 2011, 8:17 am

I’ve been really wanting to see that movie! It sounds like it has a really great plot and I love the actors in it!

  • Amber K December 30, 2011, 1:33 pm

I love condiments and sauces, but can rarely find ones I actually like. I can never figure out exactly what turns me off to a sauce, but I hate dry foods. So sauces it is!
