Running Inspiration

in All Posts

I mentioned this the other day, but lately, I am really struggling to get out there and RUN.  Blame it on the chillier temps.  While cajoling, begging, and pleading with myself works about 50% of the time (as does just putting on my stupid sneakers and doing it), I’ve found loads of inspiration in an unlikely source:  Pinterest.

What the heck is Pinterest?  It’s a website where you pin fashion ideas, design concepts, or other stuff you like… or something like that.  Sure, I’ve had an account for months, but I really can’t figure out what Pinterest is, how you pin stuff, or why you should use it.  But I do know that there are many, many fun running things to look at.  And even if I can’t really figure out the whole pinning thing, just browsing Pinterest makes me feel inspired.

So – this morning, I pinned my little heart out, got up, and went running.  Three miles, done and done.

What have you done for yourself today?  And are you into Pinterest?

    I love Pininterest!

    This quote was really good:

    yesterday you said tomorrow

    I am grabbing my sneakers!

  • Gina @ Running to the Kitchen November 1, 2011, 2:11 pm

With 11 miles on my training plan today and very limited motivation right now, thank you! This was just what I needed. I love the Nike one.

  • Stefanie @ Living HI November 1, 2011, 2:11 pm

Great post, so inspirational! I can’t even pick a favorite form this selection, they all resonate with me. I’ve never used pinterest, but I definitely will check it out now.

  • Brittany @ GOtheXtraMile November 1, 2011, 2:12 pm

Pinterest is highly addicting. I love all these running pictures! I need to get out and run now 😀

  • Shannon @ Mon Amour November 1, 2011, 2:12 pm

LOVE it! I have been turning to pictures for inspiration too!

  • leslie November 1, 2011, 2:14 pm

    Yep, I LOVE pinterest! It’s a bulletin/mood/inspiration board for the digital age…

  • Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga November 1, 2011, 2:14 pm

Pinterest has become my go-to place for so much lately…who knew…running, too!

  • Nancy (Beyoutiful Fitstyle) November 1, 2011, 2:14 pm

OBSESSED with pinterest. AND its great motivation and inspiration. I’ve been trying to get back into running too. just haven’t gotten there yet. and its going to start getting really cold up here in PA area. Do you still run outside in really cold temperatures? Like 40 degrees…30 degrees??

  • Kristen (inspiredbydooce) November 1, 2011, 2:15 pm

I can’t decide if I want to Pin or not. I like what I see, but worry that I’ll now have yet another obsession and will get caught pining instead of doing other things…

Well done with your 3 miles…I’m finding the chilly temperatures to be challenging as well. I don’t want to go out in the cold. But I keep reminding myself that this ain’t all that cold compared to what it will be all too soon.

  • Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat November 1, 2011, 2:19 pm

I love, love, LOVE Pinterest for running inspiration – and inspiration for anything!! These are such great quotes and I think I’ll print some of them off and stick them next to my mirror in my room. Thanks Caitlin!

  • kathleen @ the daily crumb November 1, 2011, 2:23 pm

pinterest is my go to for ANYTHING these days. recipes, decorating, motivation… you name it!

congrats on a great run 🙂

  • Mary @ food and fun on the run November 1, 2011, 2:23 pm

Yes!! I love Pinterest! I spend way too much time on that site. I can definitely agree with you – there are so many great posters up for grabs on the site. Sometimes it really is just what I need! My favorite: “No matter how fast you run, you are still lapping those on the couch”

  • Khushboo November 1, 2011, 2:25 pm

I just spent the last hour on Pinterest! Love their running pins, especially the Nike ones!

  • Sarah November 1, 2011, 2:30 pm

Today I ran 3 miles as the official start of my training for my 2nd half marathon 🙂
I love Pinterest. I use the Pinterest Iphone App every day. The app makes it easy to pin, like, comment, and create pinboards. I’m still not sure exactly how to follow people or follow specific boards though.

  • Christelle November 1, 2011, 2:31 pm

I’ve been trying as hard as I can to stay away from Pinterest. I haven’t even gone on the website yet. I don’t need anything else taking up time in my already busy days, especially now trying to pack up to move across the country. Maybe once I’m all settled in to a new place on a new schedule etc. I’m sure in 2012 I will be a pinterest user, I just hope I can stay away just a little while longer!!

  • Michelle November 1, 2011, 2:31 pm

I mailed cards to 4 friends today, just because. And that it makes ME feel good, is just a bonus!

  • Katie @ Peace Love and Oats November 1, 2011, 2:32 pm

you’ve found some good ones! I’ve just started using pinterest, it’s great for quotes!

  • Kelly@foodiefresh November 1, 2011, 2:33 pm

I love pinterest! I find it’s easiest to create a pinterest button on your browser so you can pin anything at any time while you’re surfing the internet. It’s definitely a time-suck.

I’m going running after work and if you ever need a running buddy (after 5 pm) or on a weekend, I’m always up for being running with you!

  • Sunny November 1, 2011, 2:38 pm

Like you said. I don’t quite ‘get’ pinterest and i’m being resistant on joining because of that. I don’t need another distraction.

I loved all your quotes. This one has been floating around tumblr lately and I really like it too: http://2ways2live.tumblr.com/post/11781102659/headed-to-pick-up-my-race-bib-for-the-st-louis

    • Caitlin November 1, 2011, 4:35 pm

Nice. I like that one a lot!

  • Hillary November 1, 2011, 2:39 pm

I’m addicted to Pinterest, and I’ve recently started going there for workout motivation, too (instead of just recipes and future dream wedding planning!) I hate the “skinny-isms” on there, but I do think there are some great motivational workouts/sayings/etc!

    • Caitlin November 1, 2011, 4:35 pm

There are some annoying skinnyish – I try to avoid those boards!

  • Sonia (the Mexigarian) November 1, 2011, 2:39 pm

I had intended to start up on my couch to 10k training yesterday, but opted for sitting on the couch.

Today I will start my training 😀 Inspired.

  • Alyse November 1, 2011, 2:40 pm

I am not into Pinterest at all. Unfortunately a bunch of bloggers are. HOWEVER, it is wonderful that it provided you inspiration. 🙂

  • Donna @ Life of a Happy Blonde November 1, 2011, 2:43 pm

I’m beyond obsessed with pinterest, its such a great inspiration (if u actually do it and don’t just stare at pictures for hours on end!) I got two halloween recipe ideas from the site and they were hits! Love these pins, when i’m having a iwanttoeathalloweenchocolateallday moment i go to my health board and read quotes like this and it makes me do something 🙂 My favourite is, it doesn’t matter how slow you go, you are still lapping all the people sittig on the couch!

    • Caitlin November 1, 2011, 4:34 pm

      heck yeah!

  • Jillian D. November 1, 2011, 2:44 pm

Thanks for sharing. I love it — just made a background on my computer with these 🙂

  • Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife November 1, 2011, 2:44 pm

Great inspiration! Love these 🙂 I bet you feel awesome now that you got out and run. Done and DONE. Way to go!!

  • Liz November 1, 2011, 2:50 pm

I love these! I saved a bunch of them for future motivation for myself 🙂

Today, I put away a bunch of boxes of stuff that have hung around for 2.5 weeks since I’ve moved – for my sanity! I’m tired of the clutter 😉

  • Jill in Chicago November 1, 2011, 2:51 pm

Whoa, that first one just gave me chills! Thanks for sharing!

  • Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries November 1, 2011, 2:53 pm

These are great bits and pieces of encouragement! We all need that extra little mantra or word of encouragement to get us going sometimes. I love Pinterest – I use it for everything. Great job on your run!

  • Ashley @ The North Carolina Cowgirl November 1, 2011, 2:56 pm

OMG I love pinterest! It gives me so much inspiration for home decorating ideas and craft ideas, to motivation to work out. Check out my boards 🙂 http://pinterest.com/thenccowgirl/

  • Christine @ BookishlyB November 1, 2011, 3:01 pm

    I’m on pinterest! So addicted.

  • Shruti November 1, 2011, 3:01 pm

Oh this was good stuff. It definitely makes me wanna go running. I have a question regarding running in cold weather. Is it safe to run in cold weather? In terms of health should I be careful how the temperatures affect me?

    • Caitlin November 1, 2011, 4:33 pm

I think you just want to be careful about not freezing/overheating. Dressing smart (and in layers) is very important. You also need to pay more attention to hydration.

I like this post from Carrots N Cake. She’s a Boston runner so she knows cold weather running! http://carrotsncake.com/2011/02/how-i-survive-winter-running.html

      • Shruti November 1, 2011, 11:18 pm

Thanks Caitlin. I will slowly venture out to see how it goes. Nothing compares to running outdoors!

  • Mindy November 1, 2011, 3:05 pm

I just pinned pretty much all of those. 🙂

  • Tim November 1, 2011, 3:07 pm

    This is outstanding!

I love the ones that you posted (“pinned?”) and requested my pinterest invite.

    FUN! Thanks for the share!

  • Brittany (A Healthy Slice of Life) November 1, 2011, 3:18 pm

    I love pinterest for inspiration!
Thanks for sharing the quotes… now it’s time to get off my butt!

  • Paula November 1, 2011, 3:20 pm

I love me some Pintrest! It’s the best.

  • katie @ KatieDid November 1, 2011, 3:24 pm

I have a similar pin board but for ‘making muscles’. I find it so inspiring also!

  • Amanda November 1, 2011, 3:27 pm

I haven’t started using pinterest yet. I’m a little scared about how much time I’ll lose to it! 🙂

I’m going to go to a spin class tonight. After the extremely trying day I’ve had at work, I desperately need that “me” time.

  • Amanda @ AmandaRunsNY November 1, 2011, 3:29 pm

Caitlin I love this post! Such good inspiration and just in time for the NY Marathon. By the way, if you need more inspiration watch NY this weekend! It always gets to me. 🙂

    • Caitlin November 1, 2011, 4:32 pm

      Good luck at NYC!

  • Raya November 1, 2011, 3:35 pm

I am not big on jumping on whatever the newest “social media bandwagon” may be…ahem: Google+, Mashable, Klout, etc etc and blaaaaaaah…..but I LOVE Pinterest!!!! When I look at the fitness category, I am SO inspired! I’ve already printed out a bunch of different quotes/pics to put up around my apartment as motivation. It also makes me think way more about my future wedding than I probably should considering I’m very single. But that’s beside the point!

  • Candice November 1, 2011, 3:40 pm

I love using Pinterest for inspiration! Do you have your own boards? You should share your username 🙂

Sometimes all it takes is a little push from a pin!

    • Caitlin November 1, 2011, 4:31 pm

It’s CaitlinHTP 🙂 I have very very little pinned. I’m boring on Pinterest.

      • Candice November 1, 2011, 4:38 pm

That’s okay, I’ll still follow you! Sometimes it’s more fun just to browse what everyone else is pinning.

  • Julia November 1, 2011, 3:51 pm

pinterest is awesome. it’s so nice to have a place where you can keep track of the things you like and find online. it can definitely be used in a few different ways:

-practical: recipes, workouts, lists of places/books
    -inspirational: quotes, prints, design, people
-interactive: looking at other’s boards, especially with friends, is way fun, seeing what they like and are focused on (i ended up purchasing my best friend’s birthday present from pinterest, due to one of her pins, and she just LOVED it! imagine the possibilities for xmas lists…)

but most of all, i use it like an electronic vision board. if i’m feeling a little dowdy, one look at my style board reminds me to mix it up. if i’m feeling unmotivated to work out, looking at fitness boards is a kick in the figurative butt.

at first, just look at other people’s boards and repin what appeals to you or what you want to keep track of. then, when you are doing your normal internet browsing, you’ll think to “save” (aka “pin”) whatever you see. it’s a whole new way to being attentive to one’s “surroundings” via internet! 🙂

    hope that helps!

    • Caitlin November 1, 2011, 4:31 pm

      You make me wanna pin!

  • margaret November 1, 2011, 4:01 pm

wish i could use pinterest (no twitter or fb) running nyc this weekend and have been beating myself up for being ‘slow’, these quotes were just what i need to realize, i need to do my best, and enjoy it, that’s why i’m there after all.

    • Caitlin November 1, 2011, 4:30 pm

YOU ARE RUNNING A FREAKING MARATHON. Hulllloooo you are fabulous 🙂 No matter how slow or how fast, NYC will change you forever! Plus, slower runners get more experience per dollar spent on race entry fees.

  • AmandaonMaui November 1, 2011, 4:14 pm

I had to pull the “What did I do today for:” image. I’m going to print it out and put it up somewhere in the house.

    Very inspiring!

I’m not really interested in Pinterest, but I think it’s a cool idea for people who are into it. Anything to get people to be creative and inspired. 🙂

  • kate November 1, 2011, 4:20 pm

If I used Pinterest for inspiration, I would spend more time online than actually working out!

I think Nike said it best. Just do it. 🙂

  • car November 1, 2011, 4:31 pm

such a coincidence- i literally just looked on pinterest or running inspiration too. love it!

  • Lisa (bakebikeblog) November 1, 2011, 4:38 pm

oooh love some of those quotes!

  • Nicole Yoder November 1, 2011, 4:49 pm

Pinning is so simple! You just create boards titled whatever you’d like… I have, “I Do”, “Style File”, “LOVE”, “Future Home”, “Cookin for My Man”, “Whips”, “Desert or Disaster?”, and so on.. and then when you see something you like you hover over the image, hit “repin” and pin it to your appropriate board! 🙂

  • Nicole Yoder November 1, 2011, 4:51 pm

OH!! And we can’t forget my fitspiration board titled, “Get It Tight, Get It Right”!!!

  • Amelia November 1, 2011, 5:02 pm

Love these! There’s a facebook group called I love running that posts similar pics and statuses. It’s awesome motivation to get out the door.

  • Carin November 1, 2011, 5:07 pm

Thankyou Caitlin- a great burst of positivity today! Hope the “Marathons by the numbers” stats re average time, age etc. convince people that they can do it and that it doesn’t matter how long it takes – it’s an achievement…. Hells bells, if I can, anyone can!

  • Emily November 1, 2011, 5:09 pm

Loved these links!! I need to start looking at more of these on Pinterest instead of food and pugs 🙂 I got my three miles done today too after a week and a half off….felt great! Go you!!

  • Meaghan (My Spoonful Of Inspiration) November 1, 2011, 5:19 pm

I bought myself a nice cup of Christmas Tea at Starbucks this morning after my morning workout 🙂 Don’t you love inspiring artwork?

  • Jackie @ Healthy Teen Foodie November 1, 2011, 5:22 pm

I’m addicted to Pinterest, and I love all the inspirational running quotes 🙂 Thanks for sharing, I needed a reminder of why I run!

  • Jenny November 1, 2011, 5:31 pm

I have been trying to get access to Pinterest forev-ah! I can’t seem to get an invite.

  • Julia H. @ The Petite Spiel November 1, 2011, 5:43 pm

I really like those “Three Simple Rules in Life”. Wise words!

I don’t actually have my own Pinterest account, but I like to randomly go on sometimes and browse. I sometimes end up saving images on my computer or bookmarking them, but I can’t bring myself to make an actual account on the site–I feel like I already have too many random accounts out there!

  • Katherina November 1, 2011, 5:53 pm

Pinterest is one of the most simple sites to figure out – just spend a few minutes with it!

  • Charlie (Therunnerbeans) November 1, 2011, 5:57 pm

Amazing, so inspiring. Thank you for sharing. Might have to print some of those to stick next to my training schedule!

  • Erin @ Big Girl Feats November 1, 2011, 6:09 pm

I am totally obsessed with Pinterest (which I called pin-interest for at least 2 months before someone corrected me. Nerds). The only down side – SUCH a time suck! I’m following you on there for the running inspiration! 🙂

  • Angela @ MyPinkyToes November 1, 2011, 6:24 pm

Oh my gosh, I just wrote about this not too long ago! Pinterest is A.M.A.Z.I.N.G! It has definitely rejuvenated my creativity! I have ideas out the wazoo! I agree that it has some wonderful running inspiration, but on the other side of that I’ve also seen a lot of negativity regarding fitness and food…even, dare I say, “thinspiration.” I’m NOT a fan of that!
However, I did see a beautiful photo that was pinned from Operation Beautiful…made me think of you and all the positivity you help spread!

  • Stephanie @ Mr and Meatless November 1, 2011, 6:44 pm

I love that. All of them, actually. It’s so hard for me to find inspiration sometimes, not just to go to the gym but to go after the things in life I want. Thanks for the little pick me up….and the little push.

  • Amber @ Busy, Bold, Blessed November 1, 2011, 6:51 pm

I’m addicted to pinterest! Love it and love these quotes! Thanks for the inspiration!

  • Heidi November 1, 2011, 6:52 pm

    Love that last quote!

  • Brooke @ sweats & sweets November 1, 2011, 6:58 pm

I love Pinterest for inspiration! I pin beautiful built ladies to be my “goal” and the running pins are to remind me that I can do it, I just need to drag myself outside and physically do it.

  • Traci November 1, 2011, 7:00 pm

    ahhh…LOVE this.

  • Jen November 1, 2011, 7:02 pm

One of my friends tried to get me to sign up for Pinterest and I hadn’t even heard of it; my first question was whether it had anything to do with Harold Pinter haha.

Oddly enough, the chilly fall weather is my inspiration for running lately. I’m such a New Englander 🙂

  • Jolene (Homespun Heritage) November 1, 2011, 7:10 pm

NICE! That is awesome! Now, I’m off to both run and workout afterward (or vice versa) for the Pile on the Miles challenge!

    Thanks for the inspiration!

  • Mary @ Bites and Bliss November 1, 2011, 7:16 pm

I love these!! And these couldn’t have come at a better time. Thanks!

  • Danielle November 1, 2011, 7:33 pm

Haha I’m just like you! I love browsing pinterest but I have no idea how to pin!

  • Diana November 1, 2011, 7:52 pm

I LOVE pinterest – it’s kind of like falling down the rabbit hole, though, I never know if/when I’ll make it out!

These are all so motivational not only for running and fitness but for LIFE! They’re such simple statements that we don’t make and uphold frequently enough!

  • Amanda November 1, 2011, 7:58 pm

I just wanted to thank you for all of the cool stuff you share on the blog. As of late, the coolest thing you’ve mentioned on the blog was the Diva Cup. I’m very concerned with the environment and sustainability but I’d never heard of this beautiful invention. Needless to say, I now own one. Just came in the mail last week and I’m stoked to use it.

Keep up with the progressive/liberal/hippie stuff.

    • Caitlin November 2, 2011, 12:55 pm

Yeah hippie stuff! I love the Diva Cup too 🙂

  • Cate @ CKinCA November 1, 2011, 8:10 pm

pinterest is the death of my productivity…and i’m okay with it. I love the simple things i find on it… like how to clean a microwave or using an old ketchup bottle for squirting pancake batter out (good for designs!).

  • Danielle November 1, 2011, 8:15 pm

I LOVE this! Thank you for posting 🙂

  • Ann @ Turbo Teacher November 1, 2011, 8:25 pm

  • Ashley @ Cooking for John November 1, 2011, 9:05 pm

thank you so much for those- i definitely needed it!!! i love pinterest, but haven’t used it as running mojo. great idea 🙂

  • Ari @ Ari's Menu November 1, 2011, 10:23 pm

I haven’t figured out how to use pinterest either, but I love everything you posted here!!!

  • Abby @ Abz 'n' Oats November 1, 2011, 10:28 pm

Love it! I actually just got Pinterest as a reward for finishing all of my tests in nursing school! I didn’t want to get it beforehand because I knew I would be distracted!

  • Luv What You Do November 1, 2011, 11:05 pm

This morning, I got myself to the gym! I have been triathlon and marathon focused and away from the gym for months. All I have been wanting to do lately was run in this crisp fall weather. It was good to get back…winter strength program here I come!

  • Dee November 2, 2011, 12:21 am

    I love Pinterest! 🙂

  • Victoria November 2, 2011, 2:46 am

Wow that provided so much inspiration, just sitting at my desk. I may just go for that run after all.

  • Beth (Well I'll Be) November 2, 2011, 11:49 am

These made my day! I love that they can just be applied to life in general too! They do make me want to go running though.

  • Sophie @ threetimesf November 3, 2011, 9:07 am

I have never visited the site, but I am going to co and check pinterest out now! I could do with a little pick me up today 🙂

  • Natalie November 4, 2011, 10:21 pm

Love this post- put some of your great clips/graphics/quotes on my BLOG and of course gave you credit. I’m not having a problem with “getting out there”, but not doing good with the eating right, or pushing myself when running, plus mileage is down since training for Chicago ended. Maybe we all need different “Playlists” :).

I do like reading the Pinterest boards for runners and have made one myself, there are some good quotes on there.
