Run This Way

in All Posts

Good evening, friends.  It’s chilly out there… Perfect evening curling up on the couch, lighting a pumpkin-y candle, and sipping a cup of hot tea.

Also a perfect evening for a run!

Thank goodness for my running buddy Nicole.  Do you have a running buddy, too?  Nicole really motivates me to get out there – mainly because I love to talk to her so much.  It’s nice to have a running buddy girlfriend who loves to gab.  It makes the miles flyyyy by.

We did 3.0 miles, walk/run style.  Seems like 3.0 miles is my magical number lately!  I have the same route that I like to run over and over again.  I know others love to constantly mix it up but I find it familiar and comforting.

I promptly refueled by eating nearly an entire plate of baked apples.  That’s practically four apples.  My entire daily need of fruit in one dish.  My stomach hurts.

But not so much so I can’t cook and eat these delicious dinner!

A little mustard sauce makes everything tastier.  Even just plain old brown rice.

All up in the mix:

Roasted broccoli

Roasted potatoes

White kidney beans

Brown rice

In other news…

Nicole, our husbands, and a few other friends have started a giant lottery syndicate pool.  We’ve got 60 tickets invested into tonight’s draw.  That’s totally insane, but 60/195,249,054 seems like better odds like 1/195,249,054… Right?  We’re totally going to win.

Me too, Nicole.  Me too.

Love it!! It’s like that episode of Friends when they all pool in for the lottery tickets 🙂 Watch out for pigeons.

  • kathleen @ the daily crumb November 2, 2011, 9:04 pm

i tend to stick to my tried and true routes as well. and i’m in the market for a running buddy if you know any friendly runners in chicago 🙂

  • Amanda November 2, 2011, 9:04 pm

I hope you guys win! 🙂

  • Gina @ Running to the Kitchen November 2, 2011, 9:11 pm

I run the same route most of the time too. Most of the time I love knowing the mile markers of the route, when it gets boring, I switch it up!

  • Kristen (inspiredbydooce) November 2, 2011, 9:13 pm

I do have a running buddy. My running friend Suz makes the miles so much more fun and makes it so much easier to run when I’m struggling to get out the door.

  • Krystina (Organically Me) November 2, 2011, 9:14 pm

    Haha, good luck. 😛

  • Nancy @ Beyoutiful Fitstyle November 2, 2011, 9:20 pm

I wish I had a running buddy! Well I run with my bf sometimes but I know I’m holding him back. And my pup. But I’d love to have one of my girl friends to run with, especially now that it’s getting colder it’d keep me more consistent and accountable.

    • Caitlin November 3, 2011, 10:54 am

Yeah – it’s so hard to get out there in winter. Buddies help 🙂

  • Sarena (The Non Dairy Queen) November 2, 2011, 9:25 pm

Tony always wants to play the lottery, but I hate wasting money. I want to believe I have a chance, but I’m so negative when it comes to this. Dinner looks delicious! I’m glad you enjoyed the cool evening with a friend!

  • Emily November 2, 2011, 9:43 pm

If you win the lottery, you’ll share the wealth with your readers, right?
I don’t have a running buddy. I’d love one though!

      Free Mmm Sauce for EVERYONE!

I just bought the same pair of sneakers yesterday but they are bright orange!! Made my run much happier today 😉
    Baked apples are the best!

    • Caitlin November 3, 2011, 11:00 am

      They are super comfy!

  • Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife November 2, 2011, 10:08 pm

I think running buddies are fun!! Wahoo 🙂

  • Katie @ Peace Love and Oats November 2, 2011, 10:12 pm

I like to run the same route too, it’s a there and back route. Although every week I add a mile, so I’m going a half mile further and exploring more! And oh my goodness that would be crazy if you won!!!

  • Sweet and Savvy November 2, 2011, 10:23 pm

Good luck on the lottery! 😉

I’m training for a 5k so right now I am running 2- and 3-mile routes in the earlyish morning. I have a reflective vest and feel hardcore when I wear it.

    • Caitlin November 3, 2011, 11:02 am

      Nice 🙂 Safe AND hardcore.

  • Jen at luck&funny November 2, 2011, 11:41 pm

I’m a routine runner. I have routes for 3, 5, and 6 miles. It’s too easy to set it and forget it!

  • Mel @ MelRuns November 2, 2011, 11:45 pm

I’m totally with you on running a familiar route. I usually go 3ish months on the same loop until I MUST change it up. It’s just so easy to repeat it when you already know the distance! Excitement fail?

  • Nicole November 2, 2011, 11:59 pm

Since you haven’t called me, I’m assuming we aren’t bajillionaires. Damn.

  • Khushboo November 3, 2011, 12:08 am

How’s life after being a billion dollar richer??

    • Caitlin November 3, 2011, 11:02 am

      Aw it’s pretty sweet. 🙂

  • Julia H. @ The Petite Spiel November 3, 2011, 12:37 am

I’m with you–running the same route is my preference! I do switch it up a little sometimes, maybe tacking on a few extra side streets or taking a bit of a different way home, but in general it’s about the same. It’s easier to just zone out & run when you’re not focusing on getting lost!

  • Kate (What Kate is Cooking) November 3, 2011, 1:14 am

I like rerunning the same routes. It’s nice to know what to expect! Now if only I had a running buddy…

  • Kiran @ KiranTarun.com November 3, 2011, 2:28 am

The lottery pool reminded me of similar FRIENDS episode – just don’t lose the tickets to a cuckoo bird like Phoebe did 😀

  • Jessica @ Jess Go Bananas November 3, 2011, 7:47 am

I hope you win! I have never ran with a running buddy before, but I imagine it would be better than running solo! 😀

  • allpointswhole November 3, 2011, 7:51 am

Beautiful trees! Yes, I have many running buddies and could not do it without them. I also train several girls. I have a marathon this weekend. Think or pray for me! Glad you are doing well! And love the pic of you on the bike!

  • Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin November 3, 2011, 8:14 am

I tend to run the same route too – mostly because it’s one of the only routes in my area that doesn’t involve big hills! 😛

  • Emily November 3, 2011, 8:32 am

Pooling lotto tickets is fun! we had a couple powerball on my team at work too!

  • Ashley @ Good Taste Healthy Me November 3, 2011, 9:05 am

haha love your optimism on the lottery! 😉

    Hello Caitlin,

I wonder if you or your husband might have some thoughts on beating bloat?
My body hoards gas and right now I am literally filled to the brim with it. It throws my bowels off and mainstream medictions do not help. Gas-x is just a psychological relief that I can’t afford.
If I jump, I can hear the gas + unbelievable water sloshing around in there really severely, even walking and I can hear and feel it. I cannot afford any massage or holistic measures.
I have no idea how to eat. I feel thirsty and drink, but then I hear so much sloshing too. I feel like I could burp for 2 hours, but can’t. My body won’t expel any of this stuff. I just honestly don’t know how to eat in order to combat this.
Its extremely uncomfortable and I’m very frustrated and feel lousy.
Any eating tips for meals and snacks? I’m at a loss and sadly making it worse!

    • Caitlin November 3, 2011, 11:05 am

Honey – Ouch! That sounds painful and super uncomfortable. Just based on being secretary at the clinic, I would guess you have some sort of food allergy – have you considered seeing an allergist or a gastrointestinal doc? Stuff like gas-x is just treating the symptoms.

You might also want to keep a food diary and note what foods make you feel worse – you may begin to notice a pattern. While I wouldn’t cut out anything based on your diary alone, the information will be super useful for the doctor.

      • honey November 3, 2011, 4:24 pm

I know I should try food elimination diet but I’m REALLY stubborn and won’t. I’m actually trying to gain some weight and I’m afraid to tinker with foods because I don’t want to risk losing more.

I tried eggs with avocado, and a bowl of oatmeals, and a bowl of cheery tomatoes for lunch.

My doctors are pretty unhelpful. I swear, they all seem to be so unaware of this stuff. They just guess at things. I can’t stand the stitches. Stitches just sitting or walking, I’m guessing from the buildup of gas in my guts.

        • Caitlin November 3, 2011, 5:53 pm

Definitely NOT suggesting you eliminate anything – just keep track of what seems to trigger your response.

If you can’t find a good doc in your area, my father-in-law specializes in allergies and might be able to offer some advice. Let me know.

I have 3 gym buddies at work – I definitely wouldn’t go anywhere near as often as I know I plan too if it wasn’t for them! Workout buddies rock 🙂

  • Alaina November 3, 2011, 6:30 pm

My best running buddy is my husband. 🙂 I can’t wait until he’s home so I can go running with him!!
