Today, BabyHTP and I officially enter double digits.  I am thrilled, to say the least!  Time seems to move impossibly slow in the first trimester and, truthfully, I felt like 10 weeks would never come.

But here I am!  Ten weeks and feeling pretty good.  Minus that whole running to the bathroom in the middle of the night to dry heave into the toilet thing.  One of my pregnancy realizations so far:  Morning sickness is a misnomer. Morning sickness should be renamed Whenever I Feel Like It Sickness.

Some facts on BabyHTP this week (source): The baby is the size of a small strawberry.  Nearly a quarter of a million new neurons are produced in the baby’s brain every minute. Ears and nose can now be clearly seen.  Hair follicles are beginning to form.  All of the organs, muscles, and nerves are in place and beginning to function.  The touch pads on the fingers already have fingerprints.  (Awww!)

Over five weeks ago, when we were in Puerto Rico, the Husband took a few ‘before’ shots.  Here’s my 4 Weeks, 5 Days pictures compared to today’s.

Also known as – pretty much no significant difference.  It floors me to know that so much is going on inside of me and yet it’s virtually invisible to the outside world.  Honestly, the biggest difference in my body is my bust size.  When I lost weight and began to run, I went down a cup size.  I had the foresight to keep all my old bras just for pregnancy, but they’re already too tight.  Some people might consider this a good thing, but trust me – to me, it’s not.  It’s painful for exercise, is generally uncomfortable, and makes me feel self-conscious (I know – I know.  Off to read some Operation Beautiful).

Another thing no one ever told me about pregnancy?  Pregnancy bloat.  It is real, it sucks, and the worst part about it is that it tricks you into thinking you’re finally bumping.  Even though I’d have no real weight gain yet, there are days that I cannot button even my looser pants and resort to using a hair fubby (hair tie) to secure the button and loop.

But you know what?  All in all – despite the dry-heaving, lady lumps, and bloat (just trying to keep it real), this has been the most wonderful experience of my life.  I’m not a hugely spiritual person, but pregnancy is making me re-think all my old theories about life and love and the grander purpose.  Sounds corny, but it’s true.  So much of this is just biology but I can’t help but think there’s more to it.  It’s so strange to know that someone’s heart is beating inside of me.  I can’t believe the Husband and I did the horizontal polka and THIS happened.  Amazing!

Here’s what I’ve read through Week 10 of Pregnancy:

What to Expect When You’re Expecting:  The classic.  For good reason.  It covers pretty much everything you’d want to know, from conception to post-birth.  However, I (like many others) found this book to be incredibly stressful.  Because it cover so much, there’s a lot of “this could go wrong!”  I don’t what to know what could go wrong unless it’s actually happening.

images

The Green Pregnancy Diet:  This book promotes a vegetarian diet for pregnancy.  I would only recommend this to people who are very new to ‘clean eating’ or vegetarian concepts.  As an author, I hate to give books bad reviews, but I didn’t learn much from this book and was a bit disappointed by the simple content.  It would, however, be good for very new vegetarians.

the_green_pregnancy_diet_pm-thumb-270x458

How to Exercise When You’re Expecting:  I really enjoyed this book, although I would not recommend the Kindle version, as the workouts are hard to follow.  Tons of great advice on exercise (organized by trimester), including sample moves.  Although I’m not specifically following the workouts, this book did motivate me to do more strength training.

The Panic-Free Pregnancy:  Readers recommended this book, and although I’ve only given it a quick read-through, I love it.  The author backs up his assertions with statistical evidence and compares American attitudes to those in other countries.  Generally, this book did made me feel less panicky, especially about air travel.  I was worried that I was radiating my baby to death, but once I saw the statistical risk broken down numerically, I felt loads better.  Although I don’t agree with all the information in the book, I do think it provides a healthy, balance viewpoint on pregnancy. Side note:  In Norway, women get 44 weeks of paid maternity leave!  In most European countries, they get 12 – 20 weeks with at least 60 – 100% pay.  In America, we are legally entitled to 12 weeks, unpaid.  That’s screwed up!

In conclusion, here’s Week 10, in neat summary form.

  • Weight gained:  0.5 pounds.
  • Number of pumpkin pies consumed:  One.  All my myself.  In two days.
  • Workouts:  Two.  A 4.0 mile run and a 1,000 meter swim.  Really want to improve this for 11 Weeks.
  • Food Aversions:  Zero.
  • Suspicions on Gender:  I’ve been leaning towards boy this whole time and calling BabyHTP “little guy” or “he,” but in the last few days, I’ve realized HE could be a SHE!  Trying to be more gender neutral in my thoughts.
  • Potential Names:  One for a girl (definite and not up for debate) and three potential names for a boy.  Any suggestions on boy names?
  • Baby Items Purchased:  Zero.  Despite having maternity insurance, I’m sitting on over $550 in medical bills from two ultrasounds.  Cute baby items will have to wait.
  • Meltdowns:  One.  No one ever told me that spotting can be totally normal during early pregnancy (my doctor said that 1 in 3 experience it with no further problems).  I’ve had two spotting episodes (at 5 weeks and 9 weeks, 4 days) that sent me into an emotional tizzy.  Hence, the ultrasound bills.
  • Deep Thought:  When you love something so much, you open yourself up to the potential for an equal amount of pain.  But you can’t have one without the other.  No sweet without the sour.  It’s worth it.

Large, swollen breasts suck. And it has nothing to do with appearance, they just feel puffy and painful.

  • Chloe (In Fine Feather) November 16, 2011, 11:01 am

Soon you’ll be seeing that little bump grow! So happy for you and the Hus, a baby is such a wonderful thing and I love reading about your (and other bloggers) journey along the way.

  • Army Amy* November 16, 2011, 11:02 am

10 weeks down! A quarter of the way done, right? All this baby talk is going to make me start jonesing for a little one myself!*

Oh I like the way you think!

  • Annie @ Naturally Sweet Recipes November 16, 2011, 11:05 am

Congratulations! You’re so tiny and adorable! Hope you continue to have good health and enjoy the process! Thanks for your book reads, I haven’t heard of some of them!

  • liz November 16, 2011, 11:05 am

haha — my BFF had “nauseous any time of the day” sickness, too!! Good luck!

  • kelly November 16, 2011, 11:06 am

Oh yes, I experienced the bloat too very early on. In fact it was one of the signs why I thought I was pregnant.. I couldn’t button my pants when I was only 3 weeks along! Oh and I had the exact same spotting experience.. 5 weeks and 9 weeks (and once again around 16 weeks).

    • CaitlinHTP November 16, 2011, 11:07 am

Oh, thank you so much for sharing this with me. The spotting was (obviously) scary and it’s good for me to know that some women continue to have it even later without problems.

      • Dani November 16, 2011, 2:05 pm

I had it (the spotting) too – just once, around 9 weeks as well. The nurse told me it was most likely no big deal, as long as it was not bright red blood. I am 36 weeks along now, and everything has been going great – so try not to worry! 🙂

        • Melissa November 20, 2011, 11:23 am

Caitlin – if it’s any consolation, at 10 weeks I started bleeding PROFUSELY (not spotting but actually through underwear, jeans, etc and was passing bright red clots). Obviously we swore we lost our 2 babies and sped to the emergency room….we had an emergency ultrasound and the babies were 100% fine! How I could bleed more then during “my time of the month” and they be okay? No clue! BUT, moral of the story is, our bodies are amazing and it’s hard not to freak out with stuff like that, but, most of the time things are fine!!! 🙂 🙂

          • CaitlinHTP November 20, 2011, 11:24 am

I am so glad your twinnies were ok!

  • Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat November 16, 2011, 11:06 am

LOVE the bit about the pumpkin pie!! I had no idea that at 10 weeks after conception, babies are so developed. Can’t wait to follow along as your baby bump grows! 🙂

  • Megan November 16, 2011, 11:07 am

Not pregnany or even close to that point in my life. But I love babies and I love the name Ryker for a boy. I think it’s original without being to weird.

    • CaitlinHTP November 16, 2011, 11:07 am

Oh I like Ryker too! Cute name 🙂

  • Jacqueline November 16, 2011, 11:08 am

Do lots of pre natal yoga! It REALLY helps with the bloat and the painful fingers and toes. Also, drink a ton of water and don’t eat too many foods that will hold water in your body, eat a lot of hydrating stuff like cucumbers and watermelon, etc. it will help cycle out the water your body is holding in.

  • steph November 16, 2011, 11:08 am

“When you love something so much, you open yourself up to the potential for an equal amount of pain.”
…so, so true. what a great way to articulate it

  • Amy November 16, 2011, 11:13 am

When I was in my first trimester I had to start sleeping in a sports bra for the first time ever. OMG. Start doubling up when you work out!

And FWIW, I didn’t get off the couch until my first trimester was over. I felt too awful, but I also have a day job and couldn’t time my workouts for when I was feeling my best – so maybe you’ll have better luck? At any rate, don’t pressure yourself right now. You really do need to rest and sleep as much as you think you do.

And keep rocking the hair elastic! It’s a great trick.

I like Charles too but I don’t want to name them something the will give way to a nickname (being a Caitlin who was nicknamed Katie for so many years). Do you think a Charles would just become a Charlie?

That must be the most awe-inspiring feeling ever, to know someone’s little heart is beating inside you 🙂

  • Sarah November 16, 2011, 11:29 am

I didn’t know there was such a thing as “maternity insurance”. Does this cover babyHTP for a time too or just your pregnancy and birthing related expenses.

I get so confused as to why/how the insurance industry distinguishes between baby and mommy care. My regular insurance covers me up to the point of squirting out a (future, hypothetical) baby and then that baby suddenly has to have its own coverage. What happens if there’s complications half way out?!

    • CaitlinHTP November 16, 2011, 11:32 am

Typical Expenses Maternity Health Insurance Covers:

      Doctor’s visits
      Sonograms/ultrasound exams
      Hospital stays
      Tests, lab work
      Prenatal care, vitamins, medicine
      Delivery
Expenses incurred if there are any complications
      Anesthesia
      Newborn check-ups

So, basically, anything you go see the doctor for that is related to pregnancy, not women’s wellness, is not covered (this is my understanding). I ONLY have maternity, however, in case of an emergency (like a c-section). It costs $150 a month on top of my normal health insurance, and I had it for five months before getting pregnant. I am also very confused by the whole system. I hate insurance (but at least I have it).

      • CaitlinHTP November 16, 2011, 11:33 am

Oh, and I have a $10,000 deductible, which is why it’s pretty much for emergencies only.

        • Sarah November 16, 2011, 12:30 pm

Healthy baby and mom are worth any cost of course… it’s just hard to see the actual costs all tallied up. I totally get it, been doing that myself.

Feels weird to think that I’m “saving up” to have a baby but what other choice do average, self-employed families have?! Just living the American dream…

      • Stephanie C November 16, 2011, 10:08 pm

I have maternity even though we have no plans to have children soon. My husband wants to be extra careful in case an accident happens.. because once you’re pregnant.. i think it’s either more expensive or they won’t cover you. I pay almost $300/month for mine (but it includes general health insurance).

Maybe someone can clarify about trying to get insurance after you’re already pregnant?

        • CaitlinHTP November 17, 2011, 10:38 am

My insurance company actually lied to me and told me that i had to have maternity before getting pregnant and I recently learned that the law in North Carolina changed that it cannot be treated as a ‘preexisting condition’ as of January 1 2011. Worth investigating!

          • Mel November 17, 2011, 4:29 pm

this falls under the Genetic Information Non-Discrimination Act (GINA). I just wrote a 20 page paper about it for law school. Insurance companies cannot discriminate based on pre-existing conditions- you don’t need maturnity insurance unless you are pregnant!

  • Kristin November 16, 2011, 11:42 am

Thanks for the update in your pregnancy! I am now 15 weeks and I feel like I am FINALLY starting to show but just a bit but I havent gained any weight really, maybe a couple pounds.
I also had spotting in my first pregnancy and it was so stressful and emotionally difficult, and it resulted in an u/s (which showed everything okay), so I understand how you were feeling! Glad the baby and you are doing well.

    • CaitlinHTP November 17, 2011, 10:38 am

      Congrats on 15 weeks!

It’s amazing how much pregnancy and having kids changes you and your whole world, isn’t it? Have you seen those shirts that say “I make people. What’s your superpower?” Heehee…

Anyways, my boobs were also (um, still are) a huge source of self-consciousness for me. Before pregnancy I was a 34D so for them to get even bigger… ouch. However, breastfeeding was and is still one of my favorite accomplishments so yay for boobies! xx

  • Jenny November 16, 2011, 12:02 pm

Oh my gosh I laughed out loud at the Horizontal Polka line. Hilarious.
aaand I could eat a whole pumpkin pie myself in two days – no question. Oh and I’m not pregnant.. 😉

Welcome to Week 10! Your looking good. Boobs, and for some hips, are the first to grow. A plus for the hubby, but an added thing to adjust to for us. Definitely start sleeping with a sports bra and find a good full coverage bra – those girls need the support.

  • Kerry November 16, 2011, 12:05 pm

Glad to see your doing so well!

Interesting stuff about how maternity pay is so shockingly bad in the US, and of course there would be zero medical bills in European countries either.

No sweet without the sour – love it!

My brother has lived in Norway for 16 years (his wife is Norwegian and they have two flipping adorable kids). They actually have it even better than that books says – they call it Parental Leave – and they can have 46 weeks at 100% pay OR 56 weeks at 80% pay. Also, to encourage male involvement, a minimum of 10 weeks must be given to the father. Their positions (of both father and mother) must be reserved for them and they must be eligible for the same raises on the same timeline as they would be without the leave. ALSO – if a woman works from home, she receives a grant in lieu of leave of around $7,000. All of this is PER CHILD.

I used to joke that I would never marry for money, but I just may marry for Norwegian citizenship…

    • Mari November 17, 2011, 12:09 pm

I was going to comment on the paternety leave, I think it is a major perk of the Norwegian system.

Must admit I am rather prouf of my country that we have managed to get such a good support system in place for parents, there is actually even more to it. For instance you are entitled to help with your student loans and kindergarden if you are a student whilst pregnant etc.

I was actually a bit shocked at how bad the deal was elsewhere.

  • Anna Burrell November 16, 2011, 12:12 pm

re: morning sickness – my Mom had it really bad 24hr/3mos and she would keep saltines and almonds by the bed and eat throughout the night and especially in the morning before getting out of bed in order to keep food down later in the day. It’s really important to never get hungry – just eat every couple hours, especially protein. Mom would even sneak a few saltines to eat mid-service on Sundays. lol

Yay so happy to see this! My husband and I are getting ready to try for a baby, but we’re working out our insurance options currently. I have a private plan that my boss gives me a stipend for each month. It does not include maternity insurance. Actually, in Texas, there’s no option for private maternity coverage. At all. Anywhere. You have to be on a group plan though your work.

Last time we looked into getting me on my husband’s plan, it was around $600 a month. Yikes. But if it is our only option, we may have to do that.

Anyway, just thought I would share and see if you or your readers have any insights about it.

    Happy 10 weeks!!

    • CaitlinHTP November 17, 2011, 10:40 am

I would weigh your options carefully. Obviously, if there is an emergency, it’s worth it, but you could easily not exceed $600 a month for 9 months if you have a complicated-free birth.

      • K November 18, 2011, 6:46 am

My BFF had a natural, complication-free childbirth in a hospital and the costs of the birth for her and the baby were $12,000.

        • CaitlinHTP November 18, 2011, 3:17 pm

I am so scared of that.

          • Rebecca January 19, 2012, 9:18 pm

I had a natural childbirth with a midwife in March 2010 and received nothing in the hospital except IV fluids and two ibuprofen after I delivered. No epidural, no anesthesia consult, and I stayed in the hospital for about 30 hours total. The bill was a whopping $15,000. This did not include any of the costs of my baby son’s care. I am a physician and was so appalled that I almost contacted my insurance company (they covered the entire cost) to see if the hospital billed for services I hadn’t received. I never did because I was too busy with the baby. But still, the costs are enormous.

  • Amy November 16, 2011, 12:26 pm

I had the spotting at 5 weeks as well — followed by the ultrasound (and the bill). I’m now 22 weeks and baby girl is doing great!

  • kelly bean November 16, 2011, 12:29 pm

In general, US maternity leaves are absolutely 100,000% UPSETTING.

Even CANADA, literally right across the RIVER from me (I live in the burbs of Detroit) have better laws in place. I don’t understand why such a “progressive” country has such terrible (seriously) laws in place.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parental_leave

    Family Leave in Canada (http://www.catalyst.org/publication/240/family-leave-us-canada-and-global)

Female employees are entitled to a standard 17 weeks unpaid, job-protected maternity leave. In addition, both male and female employees are granted up to 37 weeks unpaid, job-protected parental leave (35 weeks for women if being combined with maternity leave for a total of 52 weeks) in order to care for a newborn or newly adopted child. 20 If unable to work as a result of sickness, injury or quarantine, an employee may be entitled to a “sickness benefit” from the Canadian Government of up to 55% of previous average insured earnings. This “sickness benefit” may become payable two weeks after earnings are interrupted due to an inability to work and provides benefit of up to 15 weeks of loss of earnings due to sickness. A combination of pregnancy, parental and sickness benefits can be received up to a combined maximum of 50 weeks. 21

Thanks for this comment. Very interesting indeed.

    • MelanieF November 18, 2011, 10:10 am

Yep! That’s what we get in Canada. It’s unfortunate that it’s not better in the US.

  • K November 16, 2011, 12:30 pm

Caitlin, you look gorgeous! I remember my boobs being so sore early on and the worst was the decompression after I took my bra off at the end of the day! Ouch!I am at 17.5 weeks and I honestly look almost the same as I did pre-pregnancy! We joke that only my butt and legs are pregnant since they are the only parts of my body that have really grown any! I actually think that even despite being in the awkward phase still (which I think feels like pregnancy purgatory for us ladies), my body has never looked more incredible to me. And definitely toss that copy of “What to Expect” unless you want to talk about pathologizing pregnancy :/ I hope you continue to thrive and I so look forward to reading more updates!

In Canada we get a full year of gov’t paid maternity benefits, they are usually only 55% of your pre-leave income, but better than nothing!

  • Joanna November 16, 2011, 12:45 pm

How exciting!! I have baby fever myself so I love learning about other’s journies. Thanks for all the book about eating healthy and exercising! I didn’t even know you could still run when you’re preggos! Can’t wait for more post about your little baby!

  • Heather November 16, 2011, 12:52 pm

Thank you so much for sharing your journey! I have been keeping an eye out for many of the blogs I read to start having little ones. I am twenty weeks and the first trimester went so slowly, but now the pregnancy is flying! Enjoy your time!

  • Desi@ThePalatePeacemaker November 16, 2011, 12:54 pm

“The horizontal polka.” Oh my God, I kind of love you. 🙂
Thanks for sharing this, Caitlin! I really look forward to reading more as time goes on!

  • duffy November 16, 2011, 12:55 pm

Caitlin, I’m so happy for you and your husband! We have been trying for the last 8 months to conceive without results, and when I first read your blog I thought to myself “SERIOUSLY EVERYONE ELSE CAN GET PREGNANT EXCEPT US.” But then I was just overwhelmed with this excitement and genuine happiness for the two of you. This is such a special time for you guys – I hope that every second is more amazing than the first. And it’s so much fun to tag along on this journey with you!

Boy names…I like Trevor and Dylan. My husband and my brother.

    • Stephanie November 17, 2011, 10:07 am

Just an FYI, we tried for 8 months and then got pregnant. It happened the first month that I no longer cared. I mean, I cared but I got a puppy and stopped focusing on it. In any event, everyone around me was getting pregnant and it felt like it was taking forever. Now I realize that 8 months is really nothing in comparison to what some women go through. Hang in there!!!

    • CaitlinHTP November 17, 2011, 10:42 am

Hang in there, Duffy! I hope you get pregnant ASAP. Thank you so much for your happiness for us. We appreciate it.

  • Kate November 16, 2011, 12:55 pm

Yay for week 10! I think that was when I started to believe 🙂

Pregnancy bloat is the worst- my solution was to buy maternity jeans stupidly early. Best invention ever.

And the costs of your U/S makes me glad to live in NZ, where maternity care is FREE. We pay a $30 surcharge for scans and that’s it. Oh- and pre-natal vites.

    • Bron November 16, 2011, 2:03 pm

totally! I am really starting to appreciate all the free medical care we get in New Zealand – plus the fact that in teaching I get the standard 14 weeks paid maternity leave but that they can also reserve my position for me for two years if I want to take that time unpaid. must be majorly stressful to know that if something goes wrong with your health (or the health of your kid) that you have to have really good health insurance or pay up!

      • Jess November 18, 2011, 12:59 am

Even though I am childfree by choice I do know a little about maternity allowances in different countries, and we have it good here in NZ! Job security, paid leave for 14 weeks (or 28 weeks at half the rate, I believe). I can’t believe that some women are forced to either take sick time, quit their jobs or practically give birth at work because they have to work up until the minute they go into labour!

ANDPLUSALSO – I used to read your blog Kate, congrats on getting knocked up!!!

  • Laurie November 16, 2011, 12:56 pm

Aww, Caitlin, I’m so so happy for you! You are so beautiful with your little ‘bump’! Thanks so much for sharing your journey with us! btw, I love Jack for a boy too!

  • Jen November 16, 2011, 12:58 pm

I’m still jealous of the boobs. Can’t wait for you to have a huge belly! 🙂

  • Hilliary @ Happily Ever Healthy November 16, 2011, 1:01 pm

So happy for you! You look great!

  • Jeannette November 16, 2011, 1:03 pm

Great update! I am 10 weeks too and am jealous that you have zero food aversions! While my nausea isn’t too bad my food aversions are crazy strong! I am hungry all.the.time but have no appetite. I haven’t been able to look at a vegetable in weeks (which sucks b/c I’m a vegetarian). Another good book my friends gave me is the Girlfriends Guide to Pregnancy. I’m excited to follow along with your updates! P.S. I think we have the same due date! June 12!

  • MegaNerd November 16, 2011, 1:04 pm

    The horizontal polka? BAHAHAHAHA

Pal, you are ridiculous. I love you.

  • Josefine November 16, 2011, 1:09 pm

I love your blog and read it every single day. This is my first comment. I live in Sweden and we have the right to stay at home with the baby for 480 days. PAID! We even have the right to use these until the child is 8 years old. The parents can decide who is going to stay at home with the baby for most days however both the mother and the father has to stay at home for 60 days each.

    Keep up the good work!

    • Amanda November 16, 2011, 1:16 pm

Wow. Compared to the typical 6 weeks paid leave in the US, 480 days is amazing!

    • Eliza November 16, 2011, 11:55 pm

that is so interesting. They actually ‘have’ to stay home with the baby?

    • CaitlinHTP November 17, 2011, 10:43 am

      I am jealous!

  • Jordan November 16, 2011, 1:10 pm

Yes, there is definitely something more to this life. When I finally realized that God has planned and created everything, well, I see how it’s all such a miracle. 🙂 He planned your baby and loves it so, so much, because He already knows absolutely everything about it, what sex it is, the things it will do and be in this life, the personality and natural talents it will have…what a blessing. I’m so happy for you guys!

  • rachael November 16, 2011, 1:16 pm

Love the pregnancy update, hope you make it a regular feature!

I spotted to some extent in the first trimester of both my pregnancies; it sucked. The pregnancy that I didn’t have any spotting is actually the one I miscarried- go figure.

  • YummySushiPjs November 16, 2011, 1:17 pm

Oh God, What To Expect will have you totally freaked out before the end of it. The books they write for once you HAVE the baby are better, but still make you totally paranoid.

  • Nikky November 16, 2011, 1:19 pm

Yea, US Maternity policy is INSANE when you compare it to other “wealthy” countries. It makes me a little sick.

I can seriously relate on the boobage issue. I’ve been lucky enough that I haven’t been sick beyond some mild nausea, but my girls… they HURT. They’ve also put on about 700 lbs I think. Not to mention I’m constantly cold, and being cold mixed with already sore tatas? Yowza.

“Horizontal polka” made me snort, haha.

The boy and I have flipped a few times on boys names, we picked out a girl’s name about 5 years ago. For a boy, we decided on Cailan Eric, but considered Gabriel and Alistair. Yea, we’re gamers. Both Cailan and Alistair are from Dragon Age, my mom was big on uncommon names, so I think that rubbed off on me.

    • CaitlinHTP November 17, 2011, 10:43 am

      I love Alistair.

  • Verna November 16, 2011, 1:21 pm

Aw! You’re so cute! You’re going to be such a great Mama!!

  • Lauren @ Sweet and Twisted November 16, 2011, 1:25 pm

I loved reading updates on Daily Garnish’s baby so I’m excited for these updates from you now!

  • zoe (and the beatles) November 16, 2011, 1:25 pm

the boob thing is probably the main reason i really don’t want kids. being a d-cup is a pain enough. i can’t imagine what the girls would explode to if i got pregnant!

  • Sarena (The Non Dairy Queen) November 16, 2011, 1:37 pm

Love that deep thought! Pregnancy is amazing, but terrifying too! I swear there is no greater love than the one you feel for the little one inside of you and yeah, it hurts beyond explanation when you lose that love. I’m so glad things are going well! The boobs are crazy! They will get worse and lead to many sleepless nights and lots of pain…still worth it! Thanks for sharing this Caitlin!

  • Diana @ frontyardfoodie November 16, 2011, 1:44 pm

I had spotting once with my first pregnancy and had a complete panic attack! None this time around though so far, thank goodness.

Ultrasounds aren’t covered by our insurance either and so we kept it to one last time. I had one already this time due to not hearing the heartbeat at 11 weeks and my midwife getting a little worried. However, it wasn’t a regular ultrasound and was done with a portable unit so maybe they won’t charge me. hehe. Crossing fingers!

The bloat is certainly annoying! I’m 13 weeks now and am still not sure if I’m showing! Last time I felt like I showed earlier. haha

  • lauren November 16, 2011, 1:48 pm

I’ve heard about the increase in size of your lady lumps and I look forward to that…but I guess I didn’t really think about the fact that it’ll be painful!
I’m sure you’ll look back on 10 weeks and realize that a little bloating was nothing 🙂
When we decide to get pregnant, I’ll probably switch to my workplace’s insurance. It costs more, like $350/month more than my hubby’s, but it covers a lot more too. Darn insurance.

  • Amber K November 16, 2011, 1:48 pm

I can’t believe how many benefits everyone gets in other countries. Seriously, why do we not care for our mothers here?

    • CaitlinHTP November 17, 2011, 10:44 am

Because men mainly run the government.

  • Emily November 16, 2011, 2:10 pm

Wow, the maternity leave thing really surprised me!

In the UK we get 6 weeks paid at 90% of earnings, then 33 weeks paid at either 90% or £130 a week (about $200), and then up to 14 more weeks unpaid. So you can take up to a whole year off work and your employer has to keep a job open for you. There are other state benefits which can top this up if your income falls below a certain level, and there are additional grants for poorer pregnant women too – for stuff like fresh fruit and vegetables.

When mothers (or primary carers) return to work they are also entitled to ask for flexible working, which an employer has to do if its reasonable/possible.

There are entitlements to paternity leave too, and there are changes in progress that I am massively supportive of to make maternity and paternity leave transferable between parents (so people can choose who they want to be primary carer/if they want it equal), and also make it so you can take it any time in the first 5 years.

Paternity leave you get 2 consecutive weeks paid at £125 a week, and then you can take up to 26 weeks at £130 a week. The 26 weeks can only be if the mother has returned to work, but can start up to 1 year after the baby is born.

Anything that encourages a greater role of fathers is a massive positive for me!

  • Sarah November 16, 2011, 2:19 pm

Babycenter has a neat little feature that allows you to input a name you like and it’ll suggest more. I LOVED it..we had a boy and I found boy names to be so challenging! (We named him Nolan, by the way.)

    • CaitlinHTP November 17, 2011, 10:45 am

That is how I found my top boy name!

  • Cheryl November 16, 2011, 2:22 pm

I was going to comment on the maternity thing as well…here in Canada we get a full year off for maternity or it can be shared between both parents for maternity and paternity leave depending on how you want to do it. I guess we don’t get full pay for it though but still they have to hold your job for you and I still got paid a pretty good amount with my first baby because of Employment Insurance. It is dependent on how much you worked before having the baby as well so my subsequent 3 babies I have gotten paid nothing for since I have been a stay at home mom since the first one…good thing they are worth it anyway!! Congrats on the baby!

  • Sheilah November 16, 2011, 2:24 pm

I love baby name discussions! (But I find girl names easier to think up than boy names.) With your surname in mind:

    Isaac
    Callum
    Cameron
    Adrian
    Benjamin
    Thomas
    Patrick
    Seth

    • Eliza November 16, 2011, 9:38 pm

OH Seth I like. Would always think of THE OC though

    • CaitlinHTP November 17, 2011, 10:46 am

I like Cameron but the husband wrinkled his nose 🙁

  • Amy November 16, 2011, 2:35 pm

Thanks for the update! I look forward to hearing your stories :). We got to hear our little heartbeat on Monday. Even though it’s #3, it’s still amazing! I have never had any spotting with any of my pregnancies (knock on wood) so I’m sorry you’ve had that added stress. My doctor was surprised that I didn’t spot this time because she saw this “turbulent” spot on my uterus away from the baby that she thought might have been a twin that didn’t take…crazy huh?! But, so far all is good, except for the all day nausea.
As for boy names, they are tough. #2 was a boy for us…we picked Bradley 🙂 it fits him well. We are definitely finding out what #3 is just to have a few months to find another boy name if needed…girl names are so much easier.

    • CaitlinHTP November 17, 2011, 10:46 am

Do you call him Bradley or Brad?

  • Eve November 16, 2011, 2:36 pm

You look incredible! Clearly glowing from inside and out 🙂 Sounds cliche but so true. It’s totally nuts to think you have this semi-developed being inside of you without knowing from the outside! The 20 week ultrasound is so cool because you can see everything. I still cannot believe that my husband and I created our daughter, it’s truly a miracle. Feel good!

  • Crystal November 16, 2011, 2:42 pm

I don’t know if this would be too much, but because you are so open I though I would ask. Would you mind sharing the general cost of pregnancy/birth? I don’t mean the little details such as an outfit here or there, but the bigger things. I realize everybody has different insurance coverage and what not but I have always been super curious about an average cost. Also, totally nit picky but a huge pet peeve of mine, a baby is not biologically born a gender but a sex. Gender is fluid and much more abstract while sex is biology.

    • Caitlin November 16, 2011, 2:45 pm

I actually totally agree with your gender v sex statement (and one of the primary reasons we are not finding out sex – I don’t want to influence the baby to ‘behave’ a certain way)! Thanks for the reminder.

And yes – I’m going to keep track of all my expenses and do a post after labor. So far it’s $$$.

      • Crystal November 16, 2011, 3:06 pm

Thanks in advance! As a rule our society is very sensitive when discussing money and I really appreciate you being so open!

        • Crystal November 16, 2011, 3:08 pm

p.s. You’re growing a baby inside of you!!!!

      • Cgirl1 April 17, 2013, 10:25 am

Hi Caitlin! I was just reading through your week by week updates [THANK YOU FOR THESE – *Such* an awesome resource for the newly expecting (me!)] and I was wondering if you ever did do the pregnancy expense summary post? If so, would you mind linking to it?? Thank you and good luck with your new job! 🙂

        • Caitlin April 17, 2013, 7:44 pm

I never did! So sorry 🙁

  • Bailey November 16, 2011, 2:43 pm

I’m a long time reader, but rarely comment.. Yesterday I found out I’m pregnant as well! About (4 or 5 weeks) I’m due in July (I think), so I’ll definitely be going through this journey with you! Congrats to us!

    • Caitlin November 16, 2011, 2:45 pm

      Congrats!!

  • Emily November 16, 2011, 2:53 pm

I love reading your updates! 1/4 of the way there:)
My favorite boy names are Elliot and Nolan!

    • CaitlinHTP November 17, 2011, 10:47 am

My neighbor’s son is named Nolan 🙂 I like it a lot.

  • JenRD November 16, 2011, 2:53 pm

I totally see a little bump there! Who cares if it is bloat or baby? Maybe coconut water would help a bit? I also had spotting a few times, which freaked me out, but was totally normal–especially after sex. I also got nosebleeds for the first time in my life–I think membranes are just much more sensitive in pregnancy.
If we had had a boy, my fave name is Jacob, or Jake for short.
    Enjoy this time!

  • Molly @RDexposed November 16, 2011, 2:54 pm

I was thinking how amazing the nosy is after a kidney presentation last night but you’re GROWING two kidneys! Wow

  • Jamie @ FoodinRealLife November 16, 2011, 2:55 pm

Congrats on week 10! Just curious, are you planning to post your weight gain throughout the whole pregnancy? I did at first but stopped because I didn’t want others comparing themselves to me and I also started to feel pressure about the number. Just wondering what your take is since you don’t seem to be a scale focused person.

    • CaitlinHTP November 17, 2011, 10:56 am

Hmmmm. Interesting comment. I do want to post my weight gain because I think part of this journey will be about producing a baby and getting my body back. I might gain 25 pounds, I might gain 50. But I want to be honest about it either way.

  • Gina @ Running to the Kitchen November 16, 2011, 2:56 pm

Your insurance sounds about as good as mine. A horribly high deductible which just sucks. Congrats on being 25% there!

  • Heidi November 16, 2011, 3:01 pm

I was unaware how poor mat leave is in the US. In Canada we can get a year off paid leave. You can get paid (depending on salary) a max of around 42k I believe. Plus a lot of companies do a mat leave top up where they’ll pay you more.

  • Tiff @ Love Sweat and Beers November 16, 2011, 3:15 pm

Right now I can say that I don’t want to read any books. I just wanna’ know what the doc and fellow mamas tell me. However, I know that when my day comes, and I find out I’m expecting, I’ll be a sponge for information. Oh well – better to be over-educated than under-educated, right?

  • Brittany (A Healthy Slice of Life) November 16, 2011, 3:19 pm

My pregnancy blogs have been dwindling (what’s up with people actually HAVING their babies?! ;)) and so I’m so pumped about reading your journey!!

  • Shallin November 16, 2011, 3:24 pm

Hi Caitlin! If you’re interested in ‘alternative’ books about pregnancy, please check out ANYTHING by Ina May Gaskin (godmother of midwifery) or Penny Simkin (one of the founders of DONA International). These two women are revoluntionaries in women’s health, especially in advocating for informed choices of non-traditional pregnancy & birth. I can personally attest to how much I have learned from them throughout my doula training!

    • CaitlinHTP November 17, 2011, 10:56 am

      Thank you so much!

  • Lauren November 16, 2011, 3:38 pm

Hi Caitlin! Wonderful post…just had to comment on something you mentioned! The creation of that little heartbeat inside of you IS more than biology! It is soul that only God has the ability to form! It is amazing that He uses our bodies in such an incredible way! I am so happy for you and your husband! Praying that this journey will make the One who is in control more real to you! Enjoy your pregnancy, it is a true gift to be a part of! 🙂

  • Heather November 16, 2011, 3:48 pm

I am very lucky to be in Canada, where I get 12 weeks maternity leave paid for by the government plus 40 weeks parental leave (which can be shared with your partner) paid for by the government. It’s not my full salary, but it ends up capping out around $435 per week. I actually didn’t know the US didn’t offer parents a year leave until recently. Being on week 4 of my leave, I couldn’t imagine having to go back to work in 8 weeks!! I am also thankful that ultrasounds are covered by health care after hearing how much yours were! Maybe you should move to Canada! 😉

Our boy name was Beckett, which I love and will probably save for any subsequent children we may have. We had a girl and named her Zoey.

Childbirth is worth the pain because you get a baby in the end! I thought back to my horrible bike ride in my half ironman race, and I PAID money to do that for a stupid cotton t-shirt… if I could do that, I could deliver a baby! And I did!

  • amy November 16, 2011, 3:49 pm

Congrats on 10 weeks! I saw this article the other day and I totally thought of you, and your readers, when I read it. 🙂 http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mobileweb/brandy-ferner/setting-up-realistic-expe_b_1007740.html

Im 16 weeks with #3. It’s so fun reading your updates. My first pregnancy was such a unique experience and it brings back so many memories reading your blog. My 2nd and 3rd pregnancy are still fun, but very different. Enjoy every moment!

    • CaitlinHTP November 17, 2011, 10:57 am

Awesome article. Thanks for passing that along!

  • Kristine November 16, 2011, 4:12 pm

I agree with you on the spiritual thing….My views have completed changed since the miracle of my childen.
I also spotted during pregnancy….it was very scary but all turned out fine. And just so you know I spotted with my son but not my daughter:)

  • Kimberly November 16, 2011, 4:21 pm

It is definitely a miracle. My husband and I even went through fertility treatments and still were not blessed with a child. It is truly a blessing to be able to have a child. My best to you and your husband.

  • nancy November 16, 2011, 4:30 pm

This post definitely brought a smile to my face today. You sound so much like I did 17 years ago when I was pregnant with our oldest. I can particularly relate to the whole bust thing. I remember my bras being so uncomfortable that my husband and I went to the maternity store to get bigger ones and I wore one out of the store. So much better! The bump will get noticeably bigger in the next few weeks 🙂 And the whole morning sickness thing? I totally agree with you. Each of my pregnancies was different but my nausea could come any time of the day or night. But that nausea is a blessing. It means your body is doing what it is supposed to do and that baby is humming along. Pretty soon you are going to feel much better in every way. 2nd trimester rocks 🙂

  • Debbie~ November 16, 2011, 4:38 pm

You are planning to nurse right? Your boobs will most likely get a lot bigger but maybe by then you will be used to the change:)

    • CaitlinHTP November 17, 2011, 10:58 am

Ughhhh they are going to be ginormous.

  • Tina November 16, 2011, 4:46 pm

    Loving your growing bump 🙂

  • Fallon November 16, 2011, 4:58 pm

I think I see a bit of a bump! Don’t be self conscious about your chest, it looks to be about the same size as mine is naturally. Sleeping with a sports bra should help! For boys names I LOVE Calumn James. 99% sure this will be my son’s name. In like ten years (I’m 18). And like a previous commenter mentioned, take everything in WTEWYE with about a cup of salt. More stress is the last thing you need :). Can’t wait to follow your jouney!

P.S. I’m one of those longtime (3-4 years) readers first time commenters, so just wanted to say congratulations!! I know you and The Hubs will be great parents! Don’t intimidate yourself – if I can babysit a five year old and twins (from birth to a year on Thanksgiving), you’ll ace one baby. Promise 🙂

    • CaitlinHTP November 17, 2011, 10:58 am

Thank you so much for reading for so long!

  • Rachel November 16, 2011, 5:04 pm

brace yourself, girl. when pregnant w/ my daughter i went from a B cup to a DD! it seemed like i was at Nordstrom every month getting fitted. also, do yourself a favor & invest in a really good sports bra, if you haven’t already. the Lululemon Ta Ta Tamer is amazing. you definitely don’t want those bits wiggling around!

  • Julia H. @ The Petite Spiel November 16, 2011, 5:12 pm

Smart thinking on saving the bras!
I’ve always been relatively flat, and recently realized how convenient it is in terms of–as you said–exercise! My bigger-chested friends complain that it hurts to have the ladies bouncing around while they run, but I don’t have that problem.
Don’t feel self-conscious, though! Remember that it’s all part of the fact that you have A BABY growing inside you!!! So great!

  • Holly November 16, 2011, 5:39 pm

Congrats Caitlin! I’m a long time reader, but am a lurker, rather than a commenter. I wanted to recommend the book “Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy”. It was the most informational book I read and the least scary! I only read a few chapters of What to Expect When You’re Expecting and then it landed in my book donation pile.

I have a 10 wk old baby boy, Fintan, and ended up having to have a c-section (Def not what I ever expected to happen). Kudos to you for getting maternity insurance because HOLY COW, I had NO idea c-sections were that costly!! Thankfully I have a good insurance plan, but I have said since 10 wks ago, that I don’t know how people who are un-insured can afford to give birth!

Hope you have a healthy pregnancy!! Congrats again.

    • CaitlinHTP November 17, 2011, 10:59 am

I will have to check this out of the library! Thank you!

  • Kristin November 16, 2011, 5:58 pm

i totally wanted to say that you are not corny/crazy on the spiritual thing! How can there not be something greater out there! i truly agree….i cant wait to be preg. to experience the awesomeness of growing a little human heart and everything that goes with it! I can def see a change and the baby bump coming 🙂 you look amazing!

  • Jessica Washburn November 16, 2011, 6:13 pm

I read What To Expect…thirteen years ago with my first pregnancy. It definitely helped answer questions and calm my fears. Good luck, I wish I’d taken pictures along the way. I only have one photo of each pregnancy and they are kind of accidental shots. I hated getting my picture taken, I SO wish now I would have just embraced that time.

I vote Harper, Avery or Sawyer for a boy.

For girl, you MUST be doing PIPPA, if I was going to have a girl, I seriously love the name piper and pippa. both tomboy names!

    So happy for you!

CONGRATULATIONS!!! VERY exciting news!! You look great!!! I’m a L&D nurse in BC and have heard great recommendations about the pregnancy book “Girlfriend’s Guide to Pregnancy.” See what you think!!! 🙂

  • Allyson November 16, 2011, 6:33 pm

Just saw your tweet about maternity leave. You can’t believe your previous job ONLY gave 12 weeks. I wish, I work for the federal govt, guess how much we get??? A big fat ZERO. Bush tried to change that, but obviously there are more important things going in, like the wars and dying men at war.

    • CaitlinHTP November 16, 2011, 8:20 pm

In the U.S., the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 (FMLA) mandates up to 12 weeks of (potentially unpaid) job-protected leave, including parental leave, for many American workers.

That is the law I was referring to. I was under the impression that 12 weeks is the MINIMUM in America, hence the ‘that’s it’ reference in my tweet.

Why do federal workers get 0 week of unpaid maternity? Do you know the reason?

      • CaitlinHTP November 16, 2011, 8:37 pm

Oh I just read an email from another reader about this issue. She said, “federal employees have no maternity, paternity, or ANY short term disability program at all. The only option available to Federal employees is to use accumulated leave (and mind you, you can only use 6 weeks of accumulated six leave for giving birth, and then you can use 6 weeks of annual leave, which is the MAXIMUM amount of annual leave you can accrue at one time)”

That is the MOST HORRIBLE THING I’ve ever heard!!! Why would the FMLA not apply to federal employees?! I am shocked and disgusted with the system. Do you know what the reasoning it??

        • Caitlin November 16, 2011, 8:44 pm

Wait – I’m so confused. This article says the FMLA does apply to federal employees – http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-02-22/america-last-among-peers-with-no-paid-federal-maternity-leave.html Is it only some?

          • Allyson November 16, 2011, 9:01 pm

Fmla leave for fed employees is the same as our earned/accrued leave. So if I was to get prego my first year of working with Feds, I would have been screwed. We earned (first 3 years) 4 hours/pay period, essentially 1 day month+ 1day sick leave. I guess if you save every single hour it’s not bad. I know I didn’t do that my first year=no vaca.

Anyway, we don’t get “additional” maternity/paternity leave. I know before Bush left office he was trying to get us “actual maternity” leave…..but like I said before….war.

  • Tricia November 16, 2011, 6:51 pm

I work with preschool children. I’d stay away from any of the “aden” names like Aidan, Cayden, Jayden, etc. They are SO popular and it’s confusing when everyone’s name sounds the same at the end – for the kids and adults!

    • Krista November 17, 2011, 10:57 am

I so agree! They are EVERYWHERE!

    • CaitlinHTP November 17, 2011, 10:59 am

I don’t like aden names either.

  • sherry November 16, 2011, 6:53 pm

Very happy for you & your husband!! When I was younger & much more selfish, I always thought I wouldn’t have children. My oldest daughter is 12 my youngest is 6. Everyone will tell you everything, & anything as far as advice while your pg. people literally scared me to death! I chose to make it both times the best 9 months of my life by appreciateing every aspect of it. The best way I can discribe it to you is when I looked at my sweet new baby girl I felt like I was holding my own heart in my arms!! Enjoy your 10 wk celebration, & your new changeing body!!

  • Rosa - Fitness, Food, Fulfilled November 16, 2011, 7:18 pm

Isn’t the boobage gain crazy?! I’ve already had to buy a new bra because none of my old ones fit. A friend, who just had breast augmentation, said I must love it, but they hurt! Even hugging people hurts.
And I totally get your anxiety about baby. When I don’t have nausea or fatigue, I instantly think something’s wrong. It’s hard to just relax!

  • Jill November 16, 2011, 7:50 pm

I currently have a job with maternity insurance coverage but hope to become a stay at home mom in time for a second child. At that point we’ll lose insurance (my husband isn’t offered heath insurance) and have to find a personal plan. How did you find out about your maternity rider options? All the health insurance research I’ve done has been so so so confusing!

  • Lauren November 16, 2011, 7:58 pm

I can’t tell you how happy I am for you. Honestly, this touches my heart in so many ways. 🙂 I feel as though I’ve been following you from the beginning and you’ve honestly inspired me more than you ever know. This particular point in your life is giving me so much hope and I thank you for that. <3 you girl!

    • CaitlinHTP November 17, 2011, 11:00 am

      Aw thank you sweetie!

  • Lauren M November 16, 2011, 7:58 pm

Congratulations Cailin and hubby! Such fantastic news. I’m 27 weeks pg with baby #2, it’s the best thing you’ll ever do 🙂 You look amazing by the way, so happy!

In Australia we get 18 weeks paid leave from the government, as well as whatever your private employer wants to pay you (in my case it was 6 weeks), plus a full year off from your job (unpaid leave). We’re very lucky here, but those European countries have the best deal.

  • Tracy November 16, 2011, 8:09 pm

Hmmmm….boy names…how about Mitch, Luke or Patrick? (Those are my boys’ names. Hehe!)

    • CaitlinHTP November 17, 2011, 11:01 am

      I like Luke 🙂

  • Marcy S November 16, 2011, 8:19 pm

I grew out of my bras super quick as well.. and now at 20 weeks I”m growing out of the bigger bras already so Don’t buy too many even after you think u are done growing!

Just my opinion on the sex of the baby is…. Girl.. We aren’t finding out and everyone asks me if I had morning sickness bad and when I answer no (I know I”m lucky!!) they say its a boy.

  • Shayla @ The Good Life November 16, 2011, 8:30 pm

You look so great Caitlin! And I have to tell you I’m so very happy you’re doing weekly pregnancy updates like other pregnant bloggers have done. Those posts of theirs were my absolute favorite – it’s so fun to see your bump grow along with how you’re changing emotionally and physically weekly. I bet the bloat sucks but you look great and I’m so happy and excited for you 🙂

I saw above that you like the name Jack, I love that name too and my friend named her son Jackson Quentin – Love it!

  • chelsey @ clean eating chelsey November 16, 2011, 8:38 pm

I love that you used the term “horizontal polka” – loved it.

  • Jessie November 16, 2011, 8:46 pm

I’m a couple years away from having a little one of my own (why not wait for my 30’s?!), but I have always thought about baby names! I am stuck on Melissa for a girl because I was named after a song – Jessica – and if I have a girl, I want her to have a song too. Can you guess the band that did those two songs? 🙂

  • Penny November 16, 2011, 8:50 pm

    1. I wear a 32DDD. Yeah. Triple D.
If I ever become rich, or even mildly rich, I’m getting a breast reduction first thing. They are a pain in the Woo-ha.
    2. Pregnancy bloat was a HUGE problem for me. (Doc says it’s because digestion slows way down during pregnancy).
    3. I am so excited to keep reading your BabyHTP updates.

    • CaitlinHTP November 17, 2011, 11:02 am

I don’t blame you – I feel like so many people automatically say, “BIG BOOBS ARE AWESOME” but then when you live it, its really not so awesome at all. I have a few friends who got breast reduction surgery and were very happy with the results – notably, no more back pain.

  • Rebecca November 16, 2011, 8:53 pm

This is so sweet!! Thanks for sharing your journey 🙂 One of the main reasons I believe in God is because of the obvious detail and design that is involved in the making of every life! I can’t wait to see the grand plans He has for you and your little one 🙂

  • Allyson November 16, 2011, 9:15 pm

I don’t want to sound like a complaining bizzatch (about maternity leave), I am very happy for you guys. And wish the best of luck.

  • Brittnie (A Joy Renewed) November 16, 2011, 9:16 pm

I totally know that feeling of making it to ten weeks! I was so thankful when I hit that mark. I am now 15 weeks and I just praise God as each week passes. I was able to see our little embryo before the fertility Dr implanted him/her in my uterus (we had to do IVF to get pregnant) and seeing this and knowing that each baby starts as this and then grows into a living/breathing baby is remarkable…. a total God thing!

Oh and another fun pregnancy symptom – itching! Man my back, sides and boobs (sorry if TMI) itch ALL the time. Weird, right?

The Girlfriends Guide To Pregnancy is a funny read about the ins and outs (actual realities!!) of pregnancy. I started reading it today and I love it so far.

  • Jessica November 16, 2011, 9:17 pm

Kind of funny that this was posted the same day but I saw this and thought of you. Thought you would appreciate it 🙂

hahahah you KNOW i appreciate that.

  • Winnie November 16, 2011, 9:23 pm

    Boy name suggestion: Oliver!
It is insanely adorable – the name just reminds me of some crazy hot college freshman.

    • CaitlinHTP November 17, 2011, 11:04 am

We like Oliver 😉 It’s #2 in line.

  • Ashia November 16, 2011, 9:31 pm

Awwww! as soon as I read you have a girls name in mind I remembered how much you love twilight, you gotta tell us is the girls name you want Isabella/ Bella?

    • CaitlinHTP November 17, 2011, 11:04 am

Hahah the husband would NEVER let me do that.

  • Jennifer November 16, 2011, 9:36 pm

These are on my baby name list (for one day!)

    Carter
    Harper
    Seven
    Sierra
    Pandora
    Gray
    Avery
    Piper

    • CaitlinHTP November 17, 2011, 11:05 am

If you name her Piper will you call her Pippa?

  • Jolene (Homespun Heritage) November 16, 2011, 9:41 pm

Totally love talking about names! Here’s a few I love!

Dalton (we’re naming our son from China that one!)
    Dominic
    Donovan
    Graham
    Nigel
    Eamon
    Brody
    Fletcher
    Quade
    Owen

Have fun talking about them with your husband!

  • Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin November 16, 2011, 10:27 pm

Even though I’m not pregnant, I can relate about the bloating thing. I always get bloated around that time of month and it sucks!

Haha I love that you ate a whole pumpkin pie in 2 days. Gotta love that pregnancy appetite. 😉

  • tc November 16, 2011, 10:31 pm

I recommend the book Expecting 411 by Windsor Peak Press. They’re the anti-what to expect when you’re expecting, because it’s written to give you all the answers without freaking you out. They also have a book called Baby 411.

  • Heather November 16, 2011, 10:37 pm

I follow your blog and I was very excited to find out you were pregnant! You were due just a few days after me. I was excited to experience pregnancy along with you! I had a miscarriage on Monday. It came so fast and furious. This was my second pregnancy. For some reason, I felt the need to share. I pray for a healthy baby and pregnancy for you. Be thankful everyday to feel nausea and fatigue. I didn’t have those symptoms during this pregnancy and I always hoped it woud eventually come because it’s the true sign everything is going ok. Enjoy every moment. I love your blog!

    • CaitlinHTP November 17, 2011, 11:05 am

I am so sorry. This breaks my heart. 🙁 How are you holding up, physically and mentally?

      • Heather November 17, 2011, 2:35 pm

Thank you Caitlin! It’s very hard. I am still recovering physically. Mentally, I am struggling. I have never experienced such a strong/deep heartache. The feeling of loneliness is unexplainable. I have a new perspective on life and this experience will forever change me. I don’t know the reasons for this whole experience, god works in funny ways. I just have to believe there was a reason and it was for the best. I will heal, build strength and try again.

        • CaitlinHTP November 17, 2011, 4:21 pm

🙁 I am so sorry. Do you have anyone you can talk to about it? If it happened to me, I would definitely make 2 or 3 appointments with a therapist just to unload. Or – you can always email me if you want to chat (operationbeautiful@gmail.com).

          • Heather November 18, 2011, 9:40 pm

Thank you so much! You have such a heart. That is one of the many reasons I follow your blog! Thank you for your email address. It’s comforting to know it is there if I need it. Thank you for your replies and taking the time to reach out to me (who is a complete stranger for you). I would love to someday start a blog….just don’t know how to get started!

  • Laura November 16, 2011, 10:45 pm

I think it’d be neat if you would write about what activities you aren’t supposed to do during pregnancy. ie. can you still bike, etc.?

    • CaitlinHTP November 17, 2011, 11:08 am

You can technically bike but I would be nervous about falling. You’re not supposed to do any activity that would result in trauma to your stomach (like falling down while skiing).

  • Cheryl H November 17, 2011, 12:57 am

You look so beautiful and healthy…enjoy every moment; it’s fleeting!

  • Liz November 17, 2011, 12:59 am

Actually, my favorite boy name is your husband’s name, so I’m voting for naming him after daddy! 😀

    • CaitlinHTP November 17, 2011, 11:09 am

Spelled Kristien? It’s so hard to explain it to people!

  • Marijke November 17, 2011, 5:26 am

I’m soooo excited for the rest of your BabyHTP updates Caitlin! Such an exciting time for you and your husband!

    p.s. Horizontal polka? Hilarious!

  • Katy @ HaveYouHurd November 17, 2011, 9:46 am

Love your complete honesty with us through this – it will be very helpful to others going through similar situations. It’s real, and I appreciate it. My hubs and just started to try to get preggers (well we’ve been practicing for years, but you know what I mean 😉 and I’m hoping I’ll be able to relate to you EVEN more very soon 🙂

  • Lisa November 17, 2011, 10:02 am

I don’t know if you saw the post on Motherload yesterday, but I think it touches on some of the issues you are thinking about, especially the comments. http://parenting.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/11/16/when-did-childbirth-become-everyones-business/#more-28327

    • CaitlinHTP November 17, 2011, 11:10 am

      Oh interesting article!

  • Krista November 17, 2011, 10:21 am

When it came to Sarah, her name was a no brainer. Picking a name for Noah was MUCH harder! I remember us going out for dinner one night and going through each letter of the alphabet to help us along. We came up with Aiden, Ethan, Noah, Ryan and Owen. I really liked Ryan, but Jason didn’t. We ended up with Noah (obviously). 🙂 Have fun throwing names around!!

  • Krista November 17, 2011, 11:03 am

I am 29.5 weeks, and most of first and beginning of second trimester the first 5 minutes of cardio were so painful in the boobs!

This is my second. With my first I got my 6 weeks maternity fully paid, then I took another 4 weeks of vacation (so fully paid). Thankfully our vacation acrues yearly so it’s easy to save up.

I plan to do the same 10 weeks this time. It isn’t very long though – guys at work say “wow that’s a long time!” and I say “handing over a tiny 10 week old to someone else to take care of each weekday is NOT easy, and doesn’t seem long once you are living it!” But it was only rough on me a couple days, then I was thriving from getting back to a set schedule and a job I love with adult interaction. I know it’s not for everyone though, I understand and respect that!

  • OntarioGirl November 17, 2011, 11:38 am

you are so cute! I love these pregnancy updates 🙂

  • Kellie November 17, 2011, 12:54 pm

I dont believe its “just biology” at all! The miracle of a baby growing inside you doesn’t just happen. There is definately alot more to it, as you suggested. God created us so remarkably and so intricately. It’s all his beautiful handiwork 🙂

  • Ellie@fitforthesoul November 17, 2011, 1:31 pm

“The baby is the size of a small strawberry. Nearly a quarter of a million new neurons are produced in the baby’s brain every minute” Wowwwwieee that is soooooo amazing!! I just can’t help but say, God is good and awesome like that! 😀 And I find it amazing that this new love for this new being, is challenging you to think about life in different ways, perhaps more meaningful ways…I’m so happy for you and CONGRATULATIONS CAITLIN!!! YOU ARE LOOKING SO BEAUTIFUL TOO, AND CHEERFUL. 🙂

  • Theresa November 17, 2011, 6:05 pm

Hi! I’m a medical student, and I found this video clip today that visualizes fetal growth from conception thru delivery. I found it fascinating, and I thought you might like it since you are currently experiencing it…Hope you enjoy! http://www.ted.com/talks/alexander_tsiaras_conception_to_birth_visualized.html

  • Jessica November 17, 2011, 8:53 pm

I’m also expecting right now too. My due date is one day after yours. It will be fun to follow you along on your pregnancy, while I’m experiencing mine as well.

    • CaitlinHTP November 18, 2011, 4:58 am

      Congrats on your pregnancy!

  • Lisa @ The Splattered Apron November 18, 2011, 7:27 am

I am so excited to read your weekly updates! My daughter is over 3 months now, but I love thinking about when I was pregnant with her, before we knew she was a girl, before we knew her–it was an amazing time of wondering what she would be like. At 10 weeks, I remember feeling the way you do–completely amazed that there was a baby inside me, but you couldn’t tell from the outside except for the larger boobs and pregnancy bloat. I hope you enjoy your pregnancy as much as I did and I promise the reward at the end is worth every pound gained, sleepless night and bout of sickness.

  • Joey November 18, 2011, 3:15 pm

I loved reading this update. It’s like I get to experience pregnancy through your updates and I couldn’t be happier for you!!!

  • Emily November 22, 2011, 5:20 pm

I spotted a bit in the beginning and had a freak out or 2 but everything cleared up by 10 weeks so hopefully you won’t have any more crazy ultrasound bills!

  • Jolene (www.everydayfoodie.ca) November 24, 2011, 11:47 pm

I am catching up on blogs and just wanted to say that your little miniature bump is so cute!!!

    Congrats again!

If you could have anything, what would YOU ask for? Can finding an old oil lamp, complete with a genie, REALLY make your life better? The characters in the movie “The Lamp” learn that there’s a lot more to life than what you THINK you need!
Here’s what one viewer had to say about this movie- “The Lamp is an inspiring story about the power of the human spirit to create from within. Trost Moving Pictures does an amazing job of winding the story line through each character. An excellent and inspiring message for viewers of any age. Great message!!! Enjoy!!!”Lynne J Baecker

I cant wait to read more of your posts as I go along in my pregnancy! Its so much nicer to read and see other moms stories rather than reading how to books (although there is a time and place for those). This is a good list for any mommies to be out there that want some quick advice coming from a healthcare expert.
