In The Air Again

in All Posts

I have a confession.  Let me preface my confession by saying that I am not normally a judgy-wudgy kind of person.

However, for years, I have judged women who wear high heels to the airport.  “What are they THINKING?!” I would internally rant.  “High heels are so uncomfortable.  Why inflict that kind of ankle pain on yourself?”

Now I know.  They may be wearing high heels because their heels don’t fit in their bag!  Duh.  Shame on me.  Judge not, lest thee be packing your suitcase to the very brim and have no room for your wedges.

I’m in the air again – going back to Philadelphia again for my BFF Lauren’s bachelorette.  I am very excited because I haven’t seen Lauren for nearly a year – she moved to Singapore for work last September.  You may remember Lauren from my Disney Marathon recap; she ran the race with me.

Getting to the airport was quite the adventure.  We were running late – per the usual for a 8 AM flight – and then this happened:

2011-08-26_0843

I felt terrible for leaving Dog Vomit Apocalypse 2011 in the backseat, but I was really questioning whether I’d make it.   The Husband waved me on.

I made through security with only minutes to spare and grabbed this smoothie on the way to my gate:

I like most Bare Naked drinks, but this one was a little chalky, thanks to the 32 grams of whey and soy protein.  It was super filling though (I drank the two-serving bottle).

And a mini Larabar for something solid:

Seeya in Philly!

A hubby that lets you off from ‘vomit-cleaning duty’ is defo a keeper! Safe travels 😀

  • Cynthia (It All Changes) August 26, 2011, 9:12 am

Aww poor hubby and James but I love that he waved knowing you were excited to see Lauren.

I’ve definitely left a few yakked clean ups to Hunni in my time on the way to a meeting or meet-up. Guys like that are keepers.

  • Samantha @ Bikini Birthday August 26, 2011, 9:13 am

I just pack flats because they fit better in my suitcase.
(and that’s yet another excuse for me not to wear heels)

  • Heather Montgomery August 26, 2011, 9:14 am

That’s the same rreason I wear sneakers to the airport, too bulky in my bag! I love the Naked drinks totoo, and since I love pina colodas I was stokrd about the oone you had this morning, but I agree, its very gritty/protein tasting. What a bummer!

  • Bethany @ More Fruit Please August 26, 2011, 9:14 am

I think your wedges are super cute and even though they are technically heels, I think they’re still casual enough that no one would judge you for dressing up to fly! Have fun in Philly!

  • Donna @ Life of a Happy Blonde August 26, 2011, 9:14 am

Dog puke is code for have a good time mum 🙂
Safe flying and i was totally on the same page about heels in airports too, but now i probably shouldn’t judge too fast!

  • Jen August 26, 2011, 9:15 am

Recently I had a friend come to visit, and he missed his flight. He made it on a flight the next day… But unfortunately had to leave his wife at the curb with 2 crying children and one who was throwing up. Hopefully it’s motivation to get moving earlier! 😉

  • Kath August 26, 2011, 9:17 am

I totally agree with you about the heels. I feel the same way.

And unfortunately I will continue to wear my tennis shoes to the airport because

    Running shoes > heels

    Always.

  • brandi August 26, 2011, 9:17 am

yeah, I used to think the same thing, but it does make a difference in packing!

and you have to know someone is going to ask – Where did you get those wedges? They’re super cute.

  • Amy August 26, 2011, 9:18 am

Caitlin, those wedges are SUPER cute. Where are they from? I’m looking for a pair just like that!

(And I’ve never done it, but I actually admire women who wear heels to the airport. Flying is so unglamorous, but dressing a little more glamorously might make me enjoy it a bit more …)

    • Caitlin August 29, 2011, 10:58 am

They are from Banana Republic. 🙂 But I got them last season. SO COMFY though.

  • Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat August 26, 2011, 9:20 am

Sorry to hear about James! Two of my family’s dogs used to do the same thing and it totally grossed me out – I can’t stand puke or anything about it, especially the sound! Safe travels, and I love your wedges!

  • Gina @ Running to the Kitchen August 26, 2011, 9:21 am

I travel a lot for work and I refuse to wear heels in the airport! I will throw on my sneakers (more space consuming than the heels before subjecting myself to airport walking with the heels on! (wedges aren’t as bad ;))
    Have fun in Philly!

  • Meaghan (My Spoonful Of Inspiration) August 26, 2011, 9:30 am

I’ve always had trouble with Naked smoothies- they just taste too grainey for me. Love the heels in the airport picture, I won’t judge ever again!

  • Claire @ Live and Love to Eat August 26, 2011, 9:36 am

Dog vomit apocolypse… seriously laughing at my desk. Have a blast this weekend!

  • Chelsea August 26, 2011, 9:39 am

I thought you, too, were allergic to mango? Does that Naked smoothie not have mango in it? Or are you one of the lucky ones that gets over your food allergy? 😉 The Naked smoothies always look good, but there’s mango in all of them, and I’m allergic also, so I can never have them!

    • Caitlin August 29, 2011, 10:57 am

That one is mango free! I triple checked the label. So cute of you to remember!

      • Chelsea August 29, 2011, 12:33 pm

I’ll have to look out for that one, then. Like I said, I only remembered because I too am allergic! So that’s good to know that that one’s “safe”.

  • Gretchen @ Honey, I Shrunk the Gretchen! August 26, 2011, 9:40 am

I totally own up to the fact that I am a SUPER judgy person. 😉

  • Ash @ Good Taste Healthy Me August 26, 2011, 9:47 am

You are quite the traveler! 🙂

  • Holly @ The Runny Egg August 26, 2011, 9:47 am

I’m not a fan of that Naked drink — you are right about the chalky texture! Yuck.

I usually wear my running shoes at the airport because they seem to take up the most space in my bag — so same reasoning for you wearing your heels!

  • Vikki August 26, 2011, 9:53 am

I read your story on facebook about Andrew. It sounds very much like my Hugo story. I was 11 years old in 1989 when Hurricane Hugo hit the SC coast as a category 4 storm. I lived 30 miles inland of where it made land fall and the winds shook our house and we could hear the tornadoes whipping up all around us. 22 years later, I still panic when I hear a hurricane is heading our way.

    • Caitlin August 29, 2011, 10:56 am

      <3

  • JULIA August 26, 2011, 9:56 am

Have fun in Philly…..hope you brought a rain jacket!

  • Hillary August 26, 2011, 9:56 am

I totally judge women who wear heels to the airport. Or, rather, I stare at them in total disbelief!

  • Mary August 26, 2011, 10:00 am

The dog vomit story made me lol. I shared with my husband and he felt bad for your husband (because he knew I’d do the same thing!). Your dog really does love you best to wait to do that until you can’t be stuck with clean up duty! Have a great trip.

    • Caitlin August 29, 2011, 10:55 am

      Thanks Mary 🙂

  • Angela (Oh She Glows) August 26, 2011, 10:01 am

    toss napkins and run…love that!

  • Jen August 26, 2011, 10:02 am

I always feel shameful when I realize something like that after having judged people for it for so long! Haha! In an old post, I brought up the concept of wearing makeup to the gym, and how I only do it if I workout in the afternoon and already have it on from earlier. A reader commented saying she always judged people who wore makeup to the gym, but didn’t even realize that they might just be coming from work! Same kind of thing! We all do it.

By the way, I totally know what you mean about that protein drink. Chalky was my exact thought when I tried one. I liked the flavor of it though.

  • katie @ KatieDid August 26, 2011, 10:03 am

Hopefully you don’t discover that one has mango in it like the last time you drank one! I don’t really care for those protein-y drinks myself either. And I’m so with you on the heels… I usually wear yoga pants and flip flops… very very casual.

    • Caitlin August 29, 2011, 10:53 am

Oh god, that was terrible. I triple checked this label!

  • Michelle August 26, 2011, 10:04 am

Oh, I am usually judgy on the that too. Guess that makes sense though. Although wedges are MUCH more comfy than say 4-inch stillettos. 🙂

  • Katie @ Peace Love and Oats August 26, 2011, 10:08 am

I’ve tried that same protein smoothie, and I agree! It may have tons of protein in it, but it tastes like it! Not the best. Odwalla has some good ones!

  • Britne @ Shabbott's Habits August 26, 2011, 10:18 am

I wear my heels on the plane too, or my running shoes. Philly!?!? Be careful – the hurricane is coming. I’m in NYC and everyone is getting ready!

  • RunEatRepeat August 26, 2011, 10:25 am

I totally thought the same thing about girls in heels! Never even thought about it like that. But, I have been know to wear my running shoes for the same reason 🙂 Wonder if people judge that…

  • April August 26, 2011, 10:30 am

    Love the shoes!

  • Leanne (Bride to Mrs,) August 26, 2011, 10:38 am

I hope James is feeling better!

Oh and I read your last post about how the clinic is getting busy enough that you guys’ might have to get a secretary — and that’s awesome 🙂 so happy for you two!

    Have fun at the stagette!

    • Caitlin August 29, 2011, 10:48 am

      Thanks sweetie 🙂

  • Moni'sMeals August 26, 2011, 10:42 am

cute wedges, I totally understand I use to think the same way. I have been known to wear my vibrams on travel days!

Hope James feels better, poor lil guy. 🙂

  • Sweet and Savvy August 26, 2011, 10:42 am

Love those shoes! Especially since they’re comfortable. And your story cracked me up! I Would Have done the same thing. At least you aided with napkins! 😉

  • Julie @ Wearing Mascara August 26, 2011, 10:50 am

Have fun! Laughing at the Dog Vomit Apocalypse 2011. Haha

  • Beth (Well I'll Be) August 26, 2011, 10:50 am

I’ve never understood women who wear heels in airports either. Although most of the heels I’ve seen go along with a short skirt etc. I don’t think room in their suitcase was the issue.

  • Chelsea August 26, 2011, 10:52 am

High heels aren’t always painful, so maybe those women you’ve been silently judging are not, in fact, suffering to look good! Lol. I can walk all over the city for hours (including major hills) in my Kenneth Cole Reaction 4-inch heels, and I do it all the time. Seriously. It’s all about getting a shoe with the right amount of platform and a sturdy enough heel–I like the ones that are sort of cone-shaped (e.g., thick at the top and less so at the point), rather than traditional “stilettos”.

    • Caitlin August 29, 2011, 10:47 am

I think I’m just really really bad at walking around in high heels. LOL

  • Laura B @ My Reason to Tri August 26, 2011, 10:55 am

Oh you have the husband of the year….no decade!!!

I’ve never thought about that, but it makes sense….wear the shoes that take up most space, brilliant!!!! Duh!!! Have fun in Philly!!!!

  • Sarah August 26, 2011, 11:04 am

Love your wedges, they kind of remind me of the ones I’m wearing at work today! I have tried that Naked juice before..I think I made it three sips before chucking it (which is hard when you pay $3-$4 for a juice!!)….I just couldn’t get it down!

  • Sarah for Real August 26, 2011, 11:08 am

I like traveling with this one pair of tall boots. People look at me like I’m crazy because they’re a big shoe (though they are basically flat). They laugh until I zip-off, zip-on super fast in the security line while they’re still trying their shoes. Ha! Who’s laughing now suckers!

  • Sarah @ Simply Dove August 26, 2011, 11:09 am

Ahaha! That mini Larabar is too cute! I’ve never seen those before! Have a safe flight!! 🙂

  • Kelly August 26, 2011, 11:13 am

You do have a good point. And super cute shoes!

See, this is why I don’t think I could ever travel without my gigantic checked bag. I over pack pretty much no matter what, and I just can’t handle wearing anything besides flip flops for while in an airplane!

  • Erica @ Eating On The Run August 26, 2011, 11:15 am

    Loving those wedges!

  • Jenny August 26, 2011, 11:19 am

Hi!! I used to think the same thing about women who dress up and/or wear heels to fly in. Weird. But, really, not anymore.

Who makes those wedges? I love them! Hopefully they can still be bought!

    • Caitlin August 29, 2011, 10:47 am

🙂 They are from Banana but from last season, unfortunately!

  • Laura (On the Threshold of Greatness) August 26, 2011, 11:22 am

Hope that bitch Irene doesn’t ruin your weekend fun! 🙂 I loooove bachelorette parties! Enjoy yourself!!

While I can’t really understand this at all, some people find heels MORE comfy than flats! My aunt is so used to super high heels that she actually prefers them over anything else… I guess her feet are just ridiculously messed up, lol.

  • Steph @ A Life Without Ice Cream August 26, 2011, 11:29 am

LOL! You said a mouthful! I’m ashamed to admit I’ve been the girl wearing my high heel boots under my lululemons.. shame!

  • CJ @ http://healthy-happy-whole.com/ August 26, 2011, 11:41 am

Fly safely and have a super awesome time in Philly!!!! I didnt know they made that flavor mini larabar! I need to get my hands on some of those asap!

  • janetha August 26, 2011, 12:07 pm

I make the same judgement! Never thought they might not fit. However, I hate heels SO much that I would probably carry them in my HAND rather than wear them at the airport. Ugh, all that standing in line…

    Have fun in Philly!

  • Heather August 26, 2011, 12:08 pm

I actually have been wearing heels to the airport more often recently, but that’s because I have spent a lot of time finding *comfortable* heels. I really end up wearing the same two pairs (one black and one brown) all the time now, because they are cute and comfy. 🙂

  • Erin @ A Girl & Her Mutt August 26, 2011, 12:21 pm

If you are going to wear heels to the airport, those are the pair to wear. I love wedges (so much more comfortable!) and those look great with jeans. Nice work!

    Have a great flight!

  • Amy @girlvsweather August 26, 2011, 12:23 pm

I’m not judging, but I am coveting your shoes! 🙂

  • The Healthy Engineer August 26, 2011, 12:26 pm

Hahaha you’re always up in the air…but this sounds like tons of fun.

I’m so used to travelling this summer, it’s really strange being in one place and having to study.

Summer went by too fast 🙁

  • Shaya (Eye Girl Eats) August 26, 2011, 12:43 pm

Haha I have been known to wear my highest, tallest stiletto boots to the airport for that very reason. I’m sure I look ridiculous- especially having to peel them on and off for the security line- but there was just no other way I could get them to my destination to go with that perfect outfit 🙂

I have also been known to leave kitty-vom for the Hubs when I’m in a hurry somewhere– he understands because he’s done it right back to me 🙂

  • Allison @ Happy Tales August 26, 2011, 1:16 pm

whew, back to Philly? You are a traveling machiiiiine! Good luck with the storm! Did you get hold of the husband to see how James is doing?

  • Kate August 26, 2011, 1:34 pm

Also dying to know where you got those wedges! So cute.

    • Caitlin August 29, 2011, 10:46 am

      Banana Rep but last season.

  • Tricia August 26, 2011, 1:43 pm

    Have fun!

  • Amber K August 26, 2011, 1:49 pm

Poor puppy and poor hubby! Glad you made your plane though!

I actually wore sneakers one of the last times I flew because I couldn’t fit them in my bag. It was a pain and I felt like people were irritated that they had to wait an extra two seconds, but it worked for me!

  • Jennie @ What's Jen Eating? August 26, 2011, 1:50 pm

I love your heels!! …but yeah, I totally judge girls wearing high heels in odd places. Glad you were able to clear up the airport phenomena (unless it’s obvious they’re traveling on business)…now, why at the zoo??

  • Tracy @ Tracy's treats August 26, 2011, 2:05 pm

I never actually thought about why girls wear heels to the airport, but you’re so right! I’m sure it saves a lot of room in your suitcase!

  • Katie of Cabbage Ranch August 26, 2011, 2:21 pm

I don’t think I’d have felt that bad for Dog Vomit Apocalypse! Ha! I’d just figure next time it’d be my turn. There’s a happy thought… Awesome shoes, btw. Wedges are the perfect hybrid shoe- more comfy than a heel, cuter than a flat.

  • sara @ the foodie diaries August 26, 2011, 2:48 pm

I would think the same things about women who were wearing heels, but I suppose that makes sense 🙂 One time I wore boots on my flight because I was flying from Miami to Rhode Island and I got the weirdest looks because it was 85 degrees in Florida, but 650 and rainy up North! Plus it saved space in my suitcase 🙂

    • Jazz August 26, 2011, 4:13 pm

I hear you, I often wear my huge boots flying from Canada to Texas.. although last time I managed to run in a foot of snow into the airport in my flip flops…

  • Sami August 26, 2011, 2:49 pm

    holy cutie pie shoes! (:

  • Mary August 26, 2011, 2:50 pm

be safe in philly! I hope you get back to clt with no problems 🙂 we’re supposed to get 5 inches of rain here while you’re gone!

  • Jessica @ Jess Go Bananas August 26, 2011, 3:16 pm

O-M-G! Coconut Cream Pie is my favorite Larabar!

  • Dani August 26, 2011, 4:22 pm

Agreed on the airport thing-I know when flying started to become popular people would dress up for it, since only the richest could fly-but now people are flying here and there every 2 seconds so people need to stick to the PJs ; )

  • Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries August 26, 2011, 4:27 pm

Haha I can totally relate to wondering why women wear heals at the airport, but your thought totally makes sense! (Cute wedges by the way!)

I’ve had the protein drink from Naked before. Totally agree with you on the “chalkiness” of it. I think it’d taste much better if blended in a smoothie…what do you think?

  • Running Jennie August 26, 2011, 5:17 pm

I try to always wear shoes that won’t come off in a plane crash and would be sensible footwear on a desert island.

That being said, sometimes the knee high boots just won’t fit in the suitcase! 🙂

    • Caitlin August 29, 2011, 10:46 am

bawhahah i love this comment, jennie!

  • Nicole August 26, 2011, 5:53 pm

Oh no traveling to the northeast with a hurricane approaching, keep safe!

  • Kris August 26, 2011, 6:01 pm

I want those wedges!! Please tell where they are from.

I’ve never thought about someone judging me because I’m traveling in heels which I ALWAYS

    • Caitlin August 29, 2011, 10:42 am

They are from Banana but last season!

  • Army Amy* August 26, 2011, 6:05 pm

  • Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife August 26, 2011, 6:07 pm

    yikes! Poor hus is right!

Have fun back in Philly 🙂

  • Kris August 26, 2011, 6:09 pm

    Please excuse my typing 🙂

I was saying I always travel in heels since they take up too much room in my suitcase, and I’m height challenged (almost 5’4) with short, stumpy legs that need heels. I would never think I’m being judged since I’m dressed nicely (dark jeans, heels, t, sweater or jacket). I guess I judge more the person whose butt crack and thong I see in the Security line ahead of me, or all the lovely warm up pants saying “Pink” or “Juicey”. Yeah maybe, but you don’t have to advertise. I’ll continue to wear my heels, fully dressed, and try not to judge others those less well or more scantily dressed 🙂

    • Caitlin August 29, 2011, 10:40 am

Bawhahah this comment made me laugh. I am also not a fan of words written across my butt.

  • Kyria August 26, 2011, 6:28 pm

I always wondered about the girls wearing heels. I admit, if it is winter, I will wear my boots, even though they are a HUGE PAIN to take off when going through security. But they take up so much room!

  • Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin August 26, 2011, 7:42 pm

Haha poor hubby! And poor James too! I hope he’s feeling better.

  • Donna August 26, 2011, 9:38 pm

Yuk. Last post I’m going to read. You’ve lost me for good. Such insensitivity for your husband and pet.

    • Kris August 26, 2011, 9:49 pm

      Seriously? Stuff happens.

      • Ellie August 27, 2011, 3:48 am

        Agreed! What a laughable reaction.

    • Eliza August 27, 2011, 6:22 pm

    • CaitlinHTP August 29, 2011, 10:39 am

No I haven’t! I will have to look into that drink. It’s nice to have a protein drink every now and then.

  • Kristine @ Running on Hungry August 27, 2011, 1:14 am
