Healthy on the Highway

in All Posts

Hurricane Irene did manage to rain on our bachelorette parade, but we still had fun.

IMG_9493

The rain and winds really began to pick up around 10 PM in Philadelphia last night, so we opted to just stay put.  Trooping around Center City and bar hopping just didn’t seem like a very smart idea.

So, we ordered in pizza and played games.  So tame!

IMG_9426

Here’s a really fun bachelorette game that I highly recommend – it’s so silly.  Everyone attending should bring a pair of panties that ‘represents’ them or would somehow remind the bride of them.   For example, my friend who loves cats brought a Hello, Kitty! thong, and I brought plain white panties that I drew the phrase “No chafing!” on the waistband (an inside joke).

IMG_9437

Then, you lay out all the panties and the bride must guess which panties belong to each guest.  If she’s wrong, she has to take a drink.  If she’s right, the guest drinks.  The bride gets to keep all the underwear as a souvenir.

We hung out, talking and laughing, until 1:00 AM.  We finally turned in to the sound of 45 MPH winds against the window.  A memorable evening, for sure.

Every single flight coming out of the Philadelphia airport was grounded for the day, so I decided to carpool back with the bride’s little sister and her friend.  Alison and Jamie live in South Carolina and were driving by Charlotte; it worked out perfectly!

IMG_9526

We checked the news before leaving, and it sounded like the highways were all clear.

It was very gloomy out, though.  Once we got past Virginia, the weather drastically improved.

IMG_9503

Alison is a driving machine.  She only makes efficient, multi-purpose stops (so gas, food, and pee breaks at the same time).  I could learn a lot about road trips from Alison!  It seems like the journey absolutely flew by.

I made an effort to eat healthy on the highway.  It’s been a fun weekend, but it’s time to get back on track (and eat a vegetable or two).  Breakfast was a banana and a mini-Larabar from the depths of my purse.

IMG_9497  IMG_9498

Other eats included a packet of dry roasted almonds (from Starbucks) and the leftover salad from last night’s pizza party.

IMG_9508

We stopped at Wendy’s, and I grabbed another side salad and a baked potato.  Smothered it with sour cream – so good.

IMG_9523

I passed the time in the backseat by editing the Healthy Tipping Point book…

IMG_9513

And texting the Husband.

IMG_9519

Since Alison and her friend still had to drive so far, I told them to just drop me off at an exit near Charlotte, and the Husband came and picked me up.

As what is rapidly becoming a tradition when I go away for the weekend, he took me out for Thai.  This time, we went to a place called Thai Taste.

IMG_9530

I feel like there’s a direct correlation between excessive knick-knacks and how tasty the food is at a Thai restaurant.   The more wooden structures, the better the food.

IMG_9533 IMG_9534

Thai Taste delivers!

We started off with the veggie spring rolls.

IMG_9528

And for my entrée, I ordered the cashew nut tofu.

IMG_9539

IMG_9543

Mmm mmm.

Well, that was quite the weekend.  It was fun to see my college girlfriends, and it wasn’t so bad to say goodbye since we’ll see each other again in two weeks for the wedding.  That’s why I love weddings – a perfect excuse to see old friends.

Happy Sunday!

What a wonderful way to spend a weekend….and now I’m off to get some Thai food as well! 🙂

  • Christine @ BookishlyB August 28, 2011, 7:27 pm

I recently was invited to a shower and they said to bring a pair of panties for the bride (and so she can guess who it was fun). But they didn’t say anything about it representing us! Damn. Now I have to come up with some BS story about how a lacy pink and purple thong is “me.” Hahahaha! I’m sucking at the shower games before I even arrive now.

  • AmandaonMaui August 28, 2011, 7:31 pm

What a fun party idea! Shockingly, I’ve never been to a bachelorette party. EVER! I was too young when my sister got married, and I don’t have many female friends getting married in my nearby area.

Mmm Thai food. I went out with friends for Thai last week. I agree, the more knick knacks, the better!

  • Shaya (Eye Girl Eats) August 28, 2011, 7:36 pm

Glad you got home safely! I love having a night in playing games– in fact, one of the nights of my bachelorette we stayed in and drank and played a really naughty game (like 20 questions but with dirty q’s and an actual board with pieces). It certainly had us all getting to know each other better!

Sounds like your friend Alison has been on a lot of road trips before– that efficiency comes with practice haha 🙂

  • maria @ Chasing the Now August 28, 2011, 7:42 pm

Sounds like a fun bachelorette weekend, even if you had to change it up for the weather.

  • Chloe (In Fine Feather) August 28, 2011, 7:42 pm

That sounds like such a fun game, I’ll have to remember it! Glad you got home safe and sound and got to enjoy some Thai food 🙂

  • Fit Chick Britt August 28, 2011, 7:48 pm

Never heard of that game; it sounds like a cute idea! Glad you had a safe trip back with all the hurricane mess.

  • Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga August 28, 2011, 7:49 pm

Oh bathclorette party games and bridal shower party games are SO much fun! I would have loved to be there…sounds like a blast..:)

  • Dynamics August 28, 2011, 7:50 pm

My friend will NOT stop for anything. You better pee before you leave and not drink on the way. Her only exception is when SHE wants McDonald’s fries, then it is okay to stop. Glad you make it home safe and sound.

    • Caitlin August 29, 2011, 11:08 am

      bawhahha love this comment.

  • Lauren August 28, 2011, 7:57 pm

Glad you had a great time this weekend and glad you all stayed safe.

  • courtney (pancakes and postcards) August 28, 2011, 7:57 pm

Sounds fun! I still haven’t been to a real bachelorette party–pretty much all my married friends got hitched when I was living overseas, so I couldn’t quite make it back! That’s a great game though. 🙂

  • Katie @ Peace Love and Oats August 28, 2011, 7:57 pm

the panties game is a good idea! I’ve never heard of that!

  • katie @ KatieDid August 28, 2011, 7:59 pm

That looks like such a great weekend! It’s strange to me that one day my college friends and I will only see each other for these kind of occasions… when I see them every waking minute right now. It’s great that your not toooo far away and can see eachother a good amount!

  • Kathryn @ Flopoodle August 28, 2011, 8:11 pm

Looks like you made the most out of a less-than-ideal situation for the bachelorette party! Glad you’re home safe and sound. That Thai food looks bomb.

  • Sarena (The Non Dairy Queen) August 28, 2011, 8:25 pm

Sounds like a fun party! I like staying in with friends, so that party would have been right up my alley! I’m glad you had a great weekend even thought the storm was so crazy. I hope you have a great night with your main squeeze!

  • Gina @ Running to the Kitchen August 28, 2011, 8:27 pm

Sounds like you all made the best out of a crappy weekend! Glad you got home to Charlotte safely.

  • Beth @ 990 Square August 28, 2011, 8:40 pm

Sounds fun! The last bach party I went to we played porno…you know, like bingo, while watching a porn. Surprisingly funny!

  • Pamela @girlgonewestblog.com August 28, 2011, 8:41 pm

I’m a multitasking road-trip stopper myself. On my trip from Nashville to Denver, we only stopped when we needed gas – not bad for a 1200 mile+ journey!

  • Lee August 28, 2011, 8:45 pm

I really like how your text says, “Fun, you heart the thyroid.” That’s cracking me up.

    • JenATX August 29, 2011, 1:59 pm

haha yeah why were yall talking about the thyroid?

  • Hillary August 28, 2011, 9:02 pm

That actually sounds like the perfect Bachelorette party to me! Tame and still a ton of fun with good friends. Nice!

  • Army Amy* August 28, 2011, 9:14 pm

I know it wasn’t what y’all had planned to do, but it looks like staying in turned out to be lots of fun!*

  • Emily August 28, 2011, 9:14 pm

Sounds like a great weekend and a good trip home. I really haate road trips but I try to be efficient with my stops. I always pack snacks so I can avoid the whole sit-down meal stop. I try to pee infrequently but when I’m the driver I always seem to stop more! And I love that you and the husband do Thai food dates, my fav!

  • emily August 28, 2011, 9:19 pm

That underwear game looks so fun! My wedding was a total sausage-fest and I think I missed out on a lot of the girly touches.

I’m jealous of your Thai food homecoming tradition too. 😀

  • Marian August 28, 2011, 9:26 pm

It doesn’t seem like Irene ruined your fun at all, I’m so glad!

  • Baking N Books August 28, 2011, 9:53 pm

Staying in sounds like more fun in a way if your all together and not yelling over loud music and dirty men 😉

Do you try to squeeze in workouts when your away?

    • Caitlin August 29, 2011, 11:04 am

      Nope. No time. All fun!!!

  • jassy @ Healthy Egg August 28, 2011, 10:17 pm

you’ve been frequenting philadelphia this month…as for the underwear game, what we did before, we displayed all our gifts to the bride and she has to guess who it’s from, if she got it right, the giver would have to drink but if she was wrong, she got to drink 🙂

  • Megan August 28, 2011, 10:22 pm

We are definitely efficient travelers in my family. We stop only for gas, food and bathroom breaks at the same time.

  • Megan August 28, 2011, 10:22 pm

We are definitely efficient travelers in my family. We stop only for gas, food and bathroom breaks at the same time.

  • Cynthia (It All Changes) August 28, 2011, 10:40 pm

I drive a ton for work (and fun) so I’m super efficient when driving.

We also pre schedule dinner breaks so it’s the healthiest option and maximizes gas, peeing, and a break for me (I’m the driver).

  • Ash @ Good Taste Healthy Me August 28, 2011, 10:41 pm

Glad to hear you had a good time despite the weather! 🙂

  • Jessica @ The Process of Healing August 28, 2011, 11:10 pm

Despite the hurricane, that sounds fun! And definitely memorable!

  • Sweet and Savvy August 28, 2011, 11:19 pm

Looks like such a fun weekend! You guys Definitely beat the hurricane. 🙂

And driving looked like it was a much better idea! Flying would’ve been a nightmare today!

  • Ashley @ My Food 'N' FitnessDiaries August 29, 2011, 12:02 am

That’s awesome you ladies were still able to make it a fun, memorable evening! I love that little game you mentioned…great idea!

My husband and I are obsessed with Thai food these days… any and all of it! Your dish looked amazing.

  • Melissa @ TryingToHeal August 29, 2011, 12:18 am

we did that for my cousins party a few years ago and it was interesting when my great aunt showed up with a pair…yeesh. haha.

  • Sana August 29, 2011, 12:31 am

I love speedy road trip drivers! Glad you are home safe!

  • Khushboo August 29, 2011, 12:36 am

Sounds like a great weekend- glad you managed to enjoy yourselves despite the b1tch in the room (Irene 😉 )

  • amy August 29, 2011, 1:52 am

it’s so cool you didn’t let the hurricane ruin your plans. J/w; when you carpool with other people on long(er) trips do you pay a part of their petrol cost? Some people I know don’t but shout the other person a meal or something

    • Caitlin August 29, 2011, 11:04 am

I bought a tank of gas 🙂 I think that’s only appropriate, especially when I’m riding with two college students!

  • Sophie @ threetimesf August 29, 2011, 6:06 am

I’m so glad you managed to enjoy your weekend despite Irene – the show must go on!
That does sound like a very efficient road trip – I could learn a thing or two… :/

  • Sophie @ LoveLiveAndLearn August 29, 2011, 6:16 am

Sounds like it was a wonderful weekend and I’m glad the hurricane didn’t ruin it! That game made me laugh, so going to try it out next time the girls are all together 😛
Also those spring rolls look absolutely amazing!

  • Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin August 29, 2011, 8:01 am

Pizza and games sounds just as fun as bar hopping! I’m glad you guys still had a fun time! 😀

  • Amanda August 29, 2011, 8:08 am

Thai Taste is my favorite Thai place in Charlotte, by far (though the one near Fresh Market on Providence Rd is also excellent). Thai Taste has an awesome lunch menu, too.

  • Molly @ RDexposed August 29, 2011, 8:14 am

You should try to get a research grant to test you Thai restaurant theory. Maybe that can be your next book?

  • Kaci August 29, 2011, 8:16 am

Glad you made it back safe and sound. I followed your journey back home on Twitter, sounds like it was a fun and fast trip. =) XO

  • Stephanie August 29, 2011, 8:43 am

I’m being a total creeper here but the text you’re about to send to your husband says that he hearts the thyroid! Bahahaha!

    • Caitlin August 29, 2011, 11:03 am

      <3

  • Tiff @ Love, Sweat, and Beers August 29, 2011, 8:47 am

It has been waaaaay too long since I’ve enjoyed Thai food!

  • Carolina John August 29, 2011, 8:51 am

Man I love road trips. You do have to be efficient when you make stops, especially with kids in the car. My next road trip is sept 10th to the outer banks for a half ironman.

  • Mary @ Bites and Bliss August 29, 2011, 9:04 am

Way to make a boring ole plane flight into a fun road trip!

  • Lindsey August 29, 2011, 9:15 am

What kind of iphone case is that?? I love it!

    • Caitlin August 29, 2011, 11:02 am

      the Otterbox. It’s indestructible!

  • Heather @ Better With Veggies August 29, 2011, 9:28 am

Even with the Irene interruption, it sounds like a fun party. I love the game idea – I’ll have to remember that one! How did the bride do with her guesses?

On another note – thanks for posting your fast food choices, that’s an area I have been having a hard time finding good veggie options, which makes road trips a little harder.

    • Caitlin August 29, 2011, 11:02 am

She did pretty good 🙂 Not good enough though!

  • Julie (A Case of the Runs) August 29, 2011, 11:40 am

The first and only bachelorette party I went to was kind of impromptu (she wasn’t going to have one). We ended up seeing a show featuring naked men making shapes out of their nether regions. I am not kidding. Since she was a bride-to-be, we volunteerd her for a portion, and she ended up having to hold up one of the guy’s legs while he did a handstand. Yes, still unclothed. They came out with capes, though. Ha ha!

  • Crystal August 29, 2011, 11:41 am

Omg that Thai food looks so good. We have a restaurant called Thai Taste here in Carbondale, IL so this post made me smile.

  • Amber K August 29, 2011, 12:55 pm

So glad you had such a fun time! I have never been to a bachelorette party (other than my own), but it definitely wasn’t as fun as that!

  • Jessi @ Quirky Cookery August 29, 2011, 7:46 pm

What a fun bachelorette party game!

  • Kate August 29, 2011, 11:30 pm

Maybe you’ll have to come here or I’ll send you some: 80% of the world’s canned pumpkin is canned 20 minutes from me in Morton, IL at Libby’s! They have the Morton Pumpkin Festival in a few weeks..can’t wait for the run and then to indulge in pumpkin pancakes (& chili & ice cream…..)http://www.mortonchamber.org/pumpkin-festival

  • Kate August 29, 2011, 11:32 pm

ooops..didn’t mean this one for ya..take 54 off?

  • Jolene (www.everydayfoodie.ca) August 30, 2011, 10:59 pm

We played that game at my sisters bachelorette this summer 🙂 It was fun!

  • Cindy August 31, 2011, 11:15 am

Hey Caitlin! Where do you buy mini-Larabars?

    • CaitlinHTP August 31, 2011, 11:18 am

They are always hand outs at races, etc. I’ve never seen them sold in stores.

  • Jessica September 1, 2011, 3:16 pm

Oooo, love Thai Taste! I’ve been wondering if your Thai food usually comes from there but I guess not… So good!

  • shiwangi September 20, 2014, 2:07 pm

Hey Caitlin, love the game 🙂 Its silly but yeah very interesting. Sharing it on my blog and linking it back to you 🙂
