Red, White, and Bowling

in All Posts

Don’t get me wrong – I love fireworks as much as the next American.  But really – once you’ve seen a few firework displays, you’ve pretty much seen them all.  Which is why we opted out of the firework-watching insanity and retreated to a bowling alley last night.

The Husband and I were I OBSESSED with bowling in Orlando (we moved to Charlotte a year ago this week!) but haven’t found a good alley in Charlotte.  Now, our requirements for a ‘good’ alley are as follows:

  • Extremely cheap
  • Dive bar with a walk-up window to the bowling alley
  • Pitchers of beer
  • Tacky murals
  • Fun people-watching

Park Lanes delivered!  Bonus points for a Jukebox that takes credit cards.

We went with Nicole and Isaac.  Nicole kicked out butts.  I always get progressively worse as my arm gets tired and I drink more alcohol.

No, really, in all seriousness, I think bowling is a perfect date night activity for couples.  That’s why we used to bowl so much!  You get to do something active, it’s cheap and funny, and there’s a little friendly competition.

Eats included shared French fries and wine in a plastic cup.  So classy.

… And then I slept until 11 AM.  Seriously.  I wanted to strangle myself when I rolled over and checked the clock.  I have so much to do today!

Thus, a very quick and easy breakfast:

A mix of gluten-free cereals, sunflower seeds, almond milk, and a banana.

We took my dad bowling for fathers day a couple weekends ago and it was so much fun!

Have a great fourth of July!

  • Shannon @ Mon Amour July 4, 2011, 12:13 pm

My boyfriend and I have gone on a few double dates bowling before and we always have a great time

  • Amber K July 4, 2011, 12:15 pm

I can never bowl more than one game because I quickly tire of it, as does my arm!

I totally agree, I feel very much over fireworks. I feel very been there, done that. I’m over it! I can be patriotic at home 🙂

  • Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife July 4, 2011, 12:18 pm

I LOVE bowling, it is a super fun date! And those are good points to consider when checking out an alley 🙂

    I ate b-fast at 11 a.m too<–no biggie!

  • Samantha @ Health, Happiness & Skinny Jeans July 4, 2011, 12:21 pm

I love bowling! I’m not even a little bit good at it but its always a good time. Happy 4th of July!

  • Stephanie July 4, 2011, 12:32 pm

I haven’t been bowling in ages! I’m terrible, but it’s so much fun. I find that it’s getting more and more expensive, though. It’s hard to find old-fashioned bowling alleys…everything around here seems to be about light shows and loud music, which makes things more expensive.

  • Holly @ The Runny Egg July 4, 2011, 12:35 pm

Did you ever announce who got married on Friday? I must have missed it.

I love bowling — I am TERRIBLE at it, but it is fun!

  • Lauren July 4, 2011, 12:37 pm

I always forget how much fun bowling is until I actually do it. Have a great 4th of July Caitlin!

  • Bee Goes Bananas July 4, 2011, 12:38 pm

Mmmm, now that’s my kind of breakfast!!

  • Hillary July 4, 2011, 12:38 pm

My boyfriend is outrageously good at bowling. It’s not even a fair game when we try to compete!

  • Chloe (South Beach Girl) July 4, 2011, 12:50 pm

Bowling is so fun! I was on a rec bowling team for a few months and I loved it 🙂 Do your puppers get scared of the fireworks on the fourth?

  • Yolie @ Practising Wellness July 4, 2011, 12:51 pm

You’re right, bowling is such a fun date night – hilarious and active and competitive and just a giggle 🙂 Good luck tackling your to-do list today – at least you’ll have heaps of energy after a full nights sleep! Take care! 🙂 xyx

  • Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat July 4, 2011, 1:11 pm

Looks like fun! I’m envious of your long snooze this morning – even after our Canadian long weekend, I still feel like I could use another one to recover! Happy 4th Caitlin!

  • Mama Pea July 4, 2011, 1:17 pm

    Tacky murals??? YES!

  • BeckyH July 4, 2011, 1:36 pm

My husband and I love bowling. He loves it more than I do. I like to go and socialize and take my time etc. Therefore, when we bowl we enter the bowlers names as follows:

    Me
    Him
    Him
    Him
Him 😛 Yes, he bowls *four* times for everyone of my turns hah! win win!

  • Aja July 4, 2011, 2:13 pm

Once you’ve seen Disneyland fireworks the rest are kind of…blah.

  • Cait @ Beyond Bananas July 4, 2011, 2:22 pm

Bowling is definitley a fun date night! We can get a little bit to competitive though .. but in the end, it is all fun and games (well.. as long as I win! 🙂 )

  • Stephanie @Lungesandlunch July 4, 2011, 2:29 pm

Are those puffins I see in your bowl? 🙂

  • Katherine July 4, 2011, 2:35 pm

I went bowling a few days ago. It was sooo much fun!

  • Molly @ RDexposed July 4, 2011, 2:48 pm

What bowling alley doesn’t have good people watching?

  • Leah @ Why Deprive? July 4, 2011, 2:54 pm

I like the bowling idea instead of fireworks. Granted, our fireworks displays are NEVER as good as the American ones, but I think bowling sounds like way more fun. Plus, you get to avoid all the crazy drunken rowdies.

  • Baking 'n' Books July 4, 2011, 2:55 pm

Much funner. Although fireworks are pretty.

Is that the Sunrise cereal – I love the Vanilla one they have out 🙂

  • Christine July 4, 2011, 3:11 pm

Love, love, love bowling. And I agree- kinda over the whole burning money- I mean fireworks displays.

  • ashley@cookingforjohn July 4, 2011, 3:14 pm

happy 4th to you too, love your unconventional celebration. bowling is seriously underrated, i always have so much fun when we go!

  • Lorin July 4, 2011, 3:37 pm

I just flew in from California to Charlotte and last night I went to Big Daddy’s and got the black bean burger. My dad and I loved it!

    • Lorin July 4, 2011, 3:38 pm

By the way, have you ever gone to Home Market? It’s awesome, it has a bunch of bulk things, moreso than whole foods I think.

  • Jaime July 4, 2011, 4:14 pm

love love love bowling….i had almost forgotten! thank you!!!!

  • Khushboo July 4, 2011, 4:35 pm

I haven’t bowled in ages but it’s always such a laugh, especially when you’re with a good group of friends. And of course you can’t beat the super stylish shoes 😉

  • elyse July 4, 2011, 5:15 pm

I absolutely love fireworks 🙂 but ours come on tonight. Its a good chance for me to unwind with the boyfriend & just relax whiledoing something fun!!

  • Nicole (Earth Based Beauty) July 4, 2011, 7:56 pm

We skipped out on fireworks too and hit up some sales today instead. I absolutely love bowling too, even though I’ve only been a few times. FYI- the reason I love your blog the most is because you can totally get down with some fries and wine in a plastic cup. I figured you’d be drinking some beer though 😉 Or does beer have gluten!?

  • Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin July 4, 2011, 8:25 pm

I haven’t been bowling in years! I always forget how much fun it is until I do it again. I also forget how terrible I am at it until I do it again! 😛

  • Jessica @ The Process of Healing July 4, 2011, 9:42 pm

If anyone can do it, it’s YOU!

  • Rachel W July 5, 2011, 4:37 pm

So fun! We have been living in Charlotte for just 8 days now, and I’m thinking we might need to check out this bowling alley. Nothing beats a fun night of bowling!

  • Lauren July 6, 2011, 12:32 am

You should join a bowling league! A just for fun one of course. I met my boyfriend in a bowling league and now we have been together for almost 3 years! Your post made me so jealous, our bowling season just ended so now my sunday nights are missing that special something (aka the nerd in my loves bowling!)

Hope you had an amazing 4th!
