Check-Up

in All Posts

After running two races this weekend (recaps here), I must admit that I did absolutely nothing on Sunday except lay on my couch and eat way too much cereal and chocolate.  It was awesome.

But – here’s to another Monday!  Time to get back into the groove.

James had a vet appointment this morning.

He actually enjoys going to the vet because lots of people coo over him and give him little bones.  Win.

IMG_7163

The only part that bothers him is when the dogs in the offices next door start to howl or cry.  That’s scary for both of us.  Fortunately, James just needed a check-up.  We thought he had Lyme’s disease (again) but he’s in the clear.  100% okay!

We were running late so I stopped by my favorite smoothie place and picked up breakfast to go:

  • Soy frozen yogurt
  • Banana
  • Peanut butter
  • Chocolate syrup drizzle

And bones galore for James.

I’m working on a Triathlon FAQ post because I got a bunch of emails asking for details about how, exactly, a triathlon works.  If you’ve got a burning question about tris, feel free to ask in the comments section.  If I can’t answer your question, I’ll find someone who can!

Aww he’s adorable! Glad he is okay : )

  • Nicole July 18, 2011, 9:36 am

    Glad James is disease free!

  • Gina @ Running to the Kitchen July 18, 2011, 9:38 am

So glad James is lyme free! My dog is so scared of the vet you almost can’t see her tail it’s tucked so far between her legs the second we arrive. I can’t blame her though after having ACL surgery there. She was a pathetic sight after that.

  • Samantha Angela @ Bikini Birthday July 18, 2011, 9:38 am

    Good thing he’s ok!
What happened when he had lyme disease before? Was it very serious? How did you know?

    • CaitlinHTP July 18, 2011, 9:42 am

naw, it was no big deal. they caught it during a routine blood exam and he got antibotics.

  • Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat July 18, 2011, 9:38 am

I’m glad James is ok!! And I’m just catching up on your weekend posts – awesome job on the tri! 🙂

  • Hannah Hawley July 18, 2011, 9:39 am

I am doing my first triathlon on August 6, which I signed up for only 1 1/2 weeks ago. I am doing this for fun, my main goal is to finish the tri (I am ok with changing up my swim strokes, walking on the bike portion and run portion), my stretch goal is to finish each section as follows: 1/2 mile swim in less than 30 minutes, the 10k mountain bike in less than an hour, and the 4k trail run in less than 50 minutes. What are your tips for transitions?

  • Ash @ Good Taste Healthy Me July 18, 2011, 9:41 am

My parents dog is not friendly at all so when she goes to the vet they have to muzzle her and everything. She pees because she’s scared too…basically my mom hates taking her to the vet haha!

  • Katie July 18, 2011, 9:42 am

What a cutie! I wish my cat was like that. Last time he went to the vet, it took 2 people 10 minutes to try to hold him down so they could examine him. I ended up paying $90 so they could sedate him, just so he would stop biting/scratching everyone in sight.

  • Sarena (The Non Dairy Queen) July 18, 2011, 9:42 am

Why can’t we get treats when we go for check ups? That would at least make them tolerable!

    • CaitlinHTP July 18, 2011, 9:43 am

      Seriously.

      • DadHTP July 18, 2011, 11:11 am

        Dentists used to give lollipops.

        • Kelley @ Just Call Me Jack July 18, 2011, 11:33 am

Haha, that seems kind of backwards… were they sugar free?

        • DadHTP July 18, 2011, 11:36 am

no – why would they be sugar free? OTOH, I also had my feet x-rayed in the she store to see if my shoes fit correctly – not uncommon then.

  • Holly @ The Runny Egg July 18, 2011, 9:43 am

    I’m glad James is well!

I am looking forward to your tri post — I know so little about them.

  • Meaghan (My Spoonful Of Inspiration) July 18, 2011, 9:46 am

My puppy hates the vet! She just finished all her puppy shots but she still whines when we walk in the door 🙁 glad to hear about a rest-ful sunday! 🙂

  • Shannon @ Mon Amour July 18, 2011, 9:54 am

Glad everything is okay with the little guy!

  • Lisa @ Sunny Seed Stories July 18, 2011, 9:55 am

Mmm that sounds like a fabulous smoothie!

  • Courtney July 18, 2011, 10:03 am

Hah, James and I are the same when it comes to dogs (or people) in neighboring hospital rooms screaming! It always freaks me out!!

  • Britt July 18, 2011, 10:04 am

After aweing over your daily food choices…I was actually wondering this morning if you ever splurge! I saw you ate lots of chocolate yesterday…but do you ever eat “bad” food? Glad James is healthy!

    • CaitlinHTP July 18, 2011, 10:11 am

Hah, what do you mean by bad food?

      • Britt July 18, 2011, 10:16 am

ya know, things like pizza, burgers, fries, wings, cake, cookies (gluten free of course), fast food….just to name a few..haha 🙂

        • CaitlinHTP July 18, 2011, 10:24 am

Sure 🙂 I’ll get fries or onion rings at restaurants sometimes, if I know they’re really good. My favorite thing EVER is ice cream! Especially Ben and Jerry’s; we get it like 3 – 5 times a month.

I’d rather drink a couple glasses of wine instead of eating fried foods, which certainly isn’t that much better for you…

Sometimes we get pizza but the husband doesn’t like cheese so not very often. I don’t do burgers or wings because I’m vegetarian.

I do not like fast food, though. That’s one thing I hardly ever eat; I did get a Wendy’s breakfast bun a few months back. There’s not much for a vegetarian at fast food places, but even before I went veg, I hardly ate it. You should watch Food Inc. and it will forever turn you off of mass-produced meat.

        • Macrae July 18, 2011, 6:33 pm

I hope I’m not butting in, but using the word “bad” with food gives me the shivers! I don’t think it’s healthy to label a food ‘bad’. Especially if you’re associating them with what you listed. Those foods are not ‘bad’. Maybe they are not your ideal foods, but enjoying pizza, burgers, fries, wings, cake, cookies, and fast food is not ‘bad’. Just my little input 🙂

        • Caitlin July 18, 2011, 7:30 pm

I agree Macrae 🙂 That’s why I didn’t say anything about bad foods!

        • Britt July 19, 2011, 5:53 am

I guess it was a lack of better terms…but good points! I preach that at work all the time. Enjoy all foods…just in moderation 🙂

  • Hilliary @ Happily Ever Healthy July 18, 2011, 10:05 am

Smoothie sounds excellent! James is adorable!

  • Kate (What Kate is Cooking) July 18, 2011, 10:07 am

Glad James is okay! The idea of taking an animal to the vet freaks me out. My brother had to take our parakeet once and he was so scared 🙁 It was heartbreaking!

  • Kristen @ The Concrete Runner July 18, 2011, 10:07 am

I have to tell you, after reading your race recap, you have me wanting to do a tri really bad! My husband + I have been talking about it since we watched the Half Ironman World Championships a few months ago. We are now looking for a gym with a pool (and a good price) and I really need to start doing some cross traing since my preggo belly can’t really handle as much running anymore. I would definitely LOVE a FAQ post on triathlons since I’m a newbie!

  • Kate July 18, 2011, 10:11 am

Yay! So glad James is healthy!

  • Donna @ Life of a Happy Blonde July 18, 2011, 10:21 am

    Glad James is doing well
My dog likes to sit on my lap at the vets and she is about 70 pounds so it always gives the veterinarian a good laugh 🙂

  • April July 18, 2011, 10:32 am

My dog loves the vet! It helps that she went to puppy preschool there. They held the classes after hours in the waiting area. The treats help too. She doesn’t care what you do to her as long as a treat is involved. The only time I have seen her anxious at the vet is when we went for something not routine (she was missing for 48 hours in the middle of a Wisconsin winter). We took her to the vet to get her checked out when she was found.

  • Kiran @ KiranTarun.com July 18, 2011, 10:41 am

They should give out treats for us too, no? Glad James is going good 🙂

  • Grace July 18, 2011, 10:50 am

I was wondering what your strategy is, stroke-wise. I feel like most people do front crawl, but I’m much more comfortable with breast stroke (it’s probably easier to stay on course with breast stroke as well). Is there are variety of strokes people use? Do they change it up mid-swim?

  • Angela (Oh She Glows) July 18, 2011, 10:51 am

My cat Sketchie freaks out at the vet…you can hear his screams outside! It sounds like he’s getting murdered (when in reality its his nails cut…) lol

  • Jackie @ That Deep Breath July 18, 2011, 11:12 am

my dog pepe hates the vet! he shakes like crazy whenever he’s there and i feel terrible bringing him.

  • Jen July 18, 2011, 11:13 am

Just wondering what training plan you used? Or where you would recommend looking. I’m thinking about signing up for a sprint tri but have no idea whee to start. The swim is in a pool so I don’t need to figure out how to swim open water. Think Scotland is probably too cold for an outdoors swim!

  • Christine @ BookishlyB July 18, 2011, 11:20 am

My puppy is the same way at the vet- he loves it! My six year old golden retriever is horrible. I literally have to drag her in, and then she hides under chairs and we have to muzzle her 🙁

  • Yolie @ Practising Wellness July 18, 2011, 11:21 am

Aaah, you two look so sweet having cuddles at the vets! My westie Lily had Lymes Disease when she was a baby, so she had to be on steroids for a time. But she is good now 🙂 She hates the vet though…last time she wet herself…poor little thing…she was only getting her nails trimmed. bless. but we just give her cuddles and treats and as soon as we leave the vet area she is so bouncy and happy again, lol! <3 So glad James is all well and healthy! xyx

  • Kelley @ Just Call Me Jack July 18, 2011, 11:35 am

My dog likes the vet. She likes all the attention. And the treats! But she’s allergic to wheat, so they have to give her special ones when she comes.

    She’s such a princess 🙂

  • Julie (A Case of the Runs) July 18, 2011, 11:35 am

    Yay! Pictures of James!

Congrats on the PR… I am also in that “it doesn’t happen often these days” boat. I think my last one was September when I broke my 10K PR. I hope to PR this year!!

  • Tricia July 18, 2011, 12:04 pm

So question about triathlon for your Q&A. I am doing my first sprint in August and am really worried about the swim. Can you hold on to the markers along the side at all to catch your breath? I think it is a triangle and then will have ropes and that is what I want to grab onto. Is that possible? I am not going for time, only to finish because I am just learning how to swim and it will be tough.

  • Rebecca July 18, 2011, 12:07 pm

I’m curious: have you read at all about the dangers of soy? I’ve dropped all soy, including tofu. Check it out if you haven’t!

    • CaitlinHTP July 18, 2011, 1:07 pm

There is a lot of contradictory evidence on soy. If you don’t have breast cancer in your family, and you eat it in moderation, you’re fine. There are many benefits to eating soy (especially opposed to meat).

      • Lorin July 19, 2011, 1:31 am

Yeah, I wonder about soy, so I just make sure I don’t eat too much tofu and I drink regular milk. My mom and grandma had breast cancer, so I don’t want to take too much of a chance. However, I am vegetarian so it helps to eat some tofu, veggie burgers, and tempeh every so often instead of just beans all the time.

  • JennB@BeMe July 18, 2011, 12:10 pm

Looking forward to the tri post as I am getting excited browsing the possible races to register for. Yay! So glad the pup is Healthy!

  • Laura @ Cookies vs. Carrots July 18, 2011, 12:11 pm

My pup HATES the vet with a passion. I feel so bad because he is so excited to get in the car until he realizes where we are going!

  • Laura @ Unchartered 20s July 18, 2011, 12:14 pm

OMG James is so cute!! 😀

  • Annie@stronghealthyfit July 18, 2011, 12:19 pm

I’d love to hear more about how to start doing triathalons!

  • Mary July 18, 2011, 12:30 pm

    glad james is okay!!

  • Brittany (A Healthy Slice of Life) July 18, 2011, 12:31 pm

James is too cute! I wish Koda was OK at the vet, but as soon as we walk in, she starts shaking. She holds still and is a good, quiet pup, but she gets so scared… poor thing!

  • Sophie @ threetimesf July 18, 2011, 12:46 pm

Glad James is okay – you are so lucky to have stress free vet trips! Maisie is not a fan!!

  • Steph @ Running in the Kitchen July 18, 2011, 12:47 pm

I love that James is a good boy at the Vet! It’s nice when you don’t have to drag them in there. Even after having to hospitalize my dog Rooney a couple months ago, he still loves it going CRAZY trying to play with all of the sick dogs and vet staff. Gotta love the fur babies.

  • Mary @ Bites and Bliss July 18, 2011, 1:27 pm

Awwe poor James. My dog’s the exact same way at the vet. Glad he’s ok!

  • Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife July 18, 2011, 1:33 pm

    awww glad he’s okay!!

Can’t wait to see the FAQ about Tris, cause I LOVE Tris!!

  • Cat @Breakfast to Bed July 18, 2011, 1:39 pm

ever since I had to have my dog put to sleep, I hate the vet’s. I am forever terrified of bad news.

  • Lindsay Loves Veggies July 18, 2011, 1:42 pm

Awww! I’m glad James is ok! That whole Lyme disease deal was scary!!

  • Khushboo July 18, 2011, 1:45 pm

  • Molly @ RDexposed July 18, 2011, 7:33 pm

James looks so anxious in that first picture. Someone needs a doggie spa day!

  • Jen July 19, 2011, 1:27 am
