All Over the City

in All Posts

I have a new appreciation for New York City (in the past, I’ve been scared by the city, especially when traveling alone).  My mom and I were blessed with a beautiful, sunny day and saw so many great sites.

IMG_2085

We started off with breakfast at a little cafe called Friend of a Farmer (Tina, Ashley, and Theodora joined us, too).

Tina and I split a fruit plate, and I got the Farmer’s open-face cheese, tomato, and basil sandwich… it was salty and cheesy and amazing.

IMG_2004

Afterwards, the local gals helped my mom and I plot an agenda for the day (I killed the battery on my iPhone using the map function today – that goodness for technology or we’d be lost in the Bronx right now, I’m sure).

IMG_2006

First up: we stopped by the Race Expo so I could pick up my bib.  It seemed like a great expo, but we didn’t want to stay for long because we had more sights to see!  We did spot Gabriela at the expo – we’ll be walking the race tomorrow together since she’s injured, too.

IMG_2014

W is for walkers!  Holla.

Next stop:  taking MomHTP’s first New York cab ride to Southside Seaport to get deeply discounted theatre tickets for a Broadway show on Sunday (local tip:  the TKTS booth is also in Times Square but the line is 4 times longer – definitely worth the cab or subway ride)!  We got tickets for 50%!

IMG_2018

We held Lady Liberty in our hands…

IMG_2028

And then we saw some giant bull testicles (the line for the front was too long)…

IMG_2030

We braved the Subway to head back Uptown, and we didn’t get lost!

IMG_2040

In fact, I landed us right in the middle of Times Square!  And I was brave enough to hand my camera to a stranger (I never do this for fear of them dropping it and/or darting away).

IMG_2066

Side note: How fierce is MomHTP’s coat?!

Thanks to the always awesome Yelp! app on the iPhone, I found a fast vegetarian restaurant that served yummy falafels on whole wheat pitas for lunch:

IMG_2070

Once our tummies were full, we headed up the Empire State Building.  Thankfully, the line wasn’t horrendous and we were up and down in an hour and a half.  It was worth the wait, too!

Do you ever wonder how the island supports all those big buildings?  I do!

IMG_2077

Did you know Shanghai sinks 2 – 4 centimeters a year in some places because of all the skyscrapers?  I think NYC is solid rock underneath so this isn’t an issue.

IMG_2078

IMG_2082

IMG_2087

By this time, my feet were hurting (or “My dogs were barking,” as my Southern mommy would say).  So we decided to head back to the hotel, where we met back up with Tina and had dinner.

Lighting in the restaurant was horrible (the cooler a restaurant is, the crappier the lighting for photographs), but I ordered a beets and goat cheese salad, and we all shared roasted veggies and potatoes, too.  For dessert, I had a mini cone with salted caramel ice cream. It was the perfect dinner!

Well, my gear is all laid out, and I’m ready to walk my little heart out tomorrow.

Stay tuned for my first half marathon walking experience – it will definitely be interesting.  🙂

GOOD LUCK! I think it’ll be a lovely day – walking seems far less pressura-ble…I know that’s not a word.

I also want to now go to NYC. With my mom.

Once when my husband and I were in Disney World, a woman offered to take our picture and promptly dropped the camera breaking it. She then quickly ran off without even an apology. We haven’t given our camera to stranger since then!

    Good luck tomorrow!

    Good luck!

I know you and Gabriela will have tons to chat about for 13 miles and the time will fly by.

I saw part of the meal on Tina’s blog and yes, the swankier the restaurant, the more horrid the lighting for pics. Agreed!

  • Tabitha April 3, 2011, 11:55 am

No shame in walking. I walked my first 1/2 marathon last Sunday and loved loved loved it!!! We did 15 minute miles which I am proud of. I encouraged 3 others to do it and it was a wonderful experience. If we weren’t moving temporarily to Croatia in June for six months I would have signed up for another 1/2 in May. Just think of all the cool things you can check out when you walk. I love NYC!

  • Mike April 3, 2011, 12:14 pm

Hi Cailin, I came across your blog and am loving it so far!! Good luck with your walking 1/2! You are an inspiration as I am in a rut right now and need to get out and start running again. Any pointers? Thanks and I look forward to following your adventures.

  • Nicole April 3, 2011, 12:16 pm

  • Natalie M. April 3, 2011, 12:28 pm

Welcome to the Big Apple Caitlin! I wish you had more time to venture into Brooklyn… walking across the Brooklyn Bridge is awesome. Best wishes on your marathon…. I did the MORE back in 2008. I’ve been away for quite awhile but I’m hoping to catch up and see what life has been like for you since I last tuned in.

  • Amy April 3, 2011, 12:55 pm

Next time try going to Top of The Rock in Rockefeller Center – you get great views of the Empire State Building!

what a fun time in the city. My mom is scared to go to NYC without my Dad so I don’t know if we’d be able to travel there together.

  • kate April 4, 2011, 11:12 am

hey girl don’t hate on the bronx! lol i go to school here and it’s not THAT bad!! 🙂 🙂 If you’re ever in NYC again you should actually hit up the botanical gardens in the bronx…there are BEAUTIFUL plus, if you wear running clothes, you get in for free and can get a great run in! anyways, glad to see you enjoyed the city this time!!
