What A Girl Needs

in All Posts

You know what this girl needs to de-stress?

A manicure.

IMG_7967

A ride on the indoor trainer.  While watching TV, of course.

IMG_7943

And a long walk in my Vibrams with a happy puppy.

IMG_7953

Ahhhh. I feel so much better now!

Breakfast was eaten in a rush because we had to go to the clinic.

IMG_7940

Whoops, forgot banana!

IMG_7941

In the mix:

  • Greek yogurt
  • Raw oats
  • Pumpkin
  • Banana

And lunch was filling and flavorful!

IMG_7970

Just a simple mix of lettuce, 1.5 servings of whole wheat tortellini, sundried tomatoes, and tabbouleh.  I love tortellini without sauce for some odd reason.

IMG_7974

Now that exercise, clinic, and nail time are over, I have to spend the rest of the day writing!  I can’t believe my second book is DUE on February 15.  Ahh!

Thanks for all your feedback on this morning’s post about finding a work/life balance.  I think the best tips for our family business were:

  • Regularly schedule meetings at restaurants instead of having them in the living room whenever the mood strikes
  • Remember that a work/life balance is perhaps achieved over years, not on a day to day basis.

Ya’ll are so smart.  😉

I have a recumbent bike in front of my TV and I love watching my favorite TV shows while working out. It’s definitely a great way to de-stress. Have fun writing!

  • Kelly January 8, 2011, 2:53 pm

I love tortellini without sauce too!

Also, I agree with Gabriela, the nails are very princessy – your ring from that angle looks like a little crown! 🙂

  • Allie January 8, 2011, 2:54 pm

Manicure! Wahoo, I love the color 🙂 Looks like you are having an enjoyable day so far. All the food pictures look great as well. Nothing makes me more happy than walking my dog.. so relaxing, isn’t it?!

  • Liz January 8, 2011, 2:55 pm

I’ll be a little more realistic about the work/life balance. My husband & I have worked together for the past 3.5 years. I have to admit the first couple of years it was all business, all the time. All of our trips were business related, etc. It’s even worse with us because it’s just the two of us in the business and we don’t have kids so it’s very common for us to do weeknight and weekend appointments along with having our office open all week long. In fact we have an appointment tomorrow!

I will say that after awhile it did get better only because we made it get better. When i want a night away from business i’ll just say we are not “business name” tonight, we are just us. Like last night we had a banquet to attend for a volunteer organization we both belong to. DH wanted to wear a button down shirt with our logo on it. Uh.. no go. No advertising tonight.

It will only work if you and your DH make it work, but don’t expect it to happen over night especially when you are trying to grow your business. You pretty much need to be in business mode whenever you have an audience in front of you. Advertising is great, word of mouth is better.

  • Christina January 8, 2011, 2:59 pm

Your manicure is gorgeous! I also like tortellini without sauce, because they’re already little pockets of flavor.

  • Jessica @ The Process of Healing January 8, 2011, 3:00 pm

LOVE your color! It’s so happy in this dull winterness.

  • Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) January 8, 2011, 3:02 pm

Balance achieved over years, not day to day…such a good reminder. I feel the same about exercise/food choices…some days, weeks, months are better than others…but it’s over the course of life, the long haul, that matters most to me. Not in the day to day so much b/c some days…just…arent a good snapshot of the whole big picture.

Love the manicure and the pink earmuffs!

    Good luck writing!
    🙂

    • Nikki M January 8, 2011, 3:12 pm

I like the way you worded that! “over the course of life”

  • Allison @ Happy Tales January 8, 2011, 3:02 pm

The picture of your manicure is phenomenal! How did you get that black background?!

    • Caitlin January 8, 2011, 3:05 pm

I have no idea. It was taken in front of a window so maybe it was the light contrast?

  • Michele @ Healthy Cultivations January 8, 2011, 3:09 pm

A manicure or pedicure ALWAYS does wonders for me too! I just wrote about that on Thursday 🙂

  • Ali January 8, 2011, 3:11 pm

Painting my nails is such a nice way to relax. 🙂

  • Erin @ The Grass Skirt January 8, 2011, 3:11 pm

I love the nail polish color you chose! I am just about to unwind and give myself a home manicure (though getting one is always much more relaxing).

  • nicole January 8, 2011, 3:12 pm

Your nails look great! Love the earmuffs as well.

  • hippierunner January 8, 2011, 3:19 pm

I love that color nail polish! What kind is it?

    • Caitlin January 8, 2011, 3:22 pm

      OPI grapeful!

  • jen @ taste life January 8, 2011, 3:23 pm

Now I want tortellini like it’s goin’ outta style.

  • mary (what's cookin' with mary) January 8, 2011, 3:24 pm

I share your love for plain tortellini! 😉 …and it cannot be explained?!

  • Camille January 8, 2011, 3:25 pm

    Lunch looks so good!
I actually like tortellini better without sauce too. They are less “pasta-like” (I don’t like pasta) and more “delicious-like” 🙂

  • Sarah (Sarah Learns) January 8, 2011, 3:28 pm

sounds like a great morning to me! 🙂 i’ve never tried eating tortellini without sauce before, but in a salad, the no sauce tortellini makes sense!

  • Kailey @ Caffienated Nut January 8, 2011, 3:36 pm

i must say that your nailpolish looks gorgeous with your skintone 🙂 love it!

tortellini is one of my favorites – i never put sauce on it either!

  • Kelly January 8, 2011, 3:46 pm

    Love that nail color!

  • Baking 'n' Books January 8, 2011, 3:47 pm

The ear-muffs rock! I thought you were wearing them on your trainer at first 😉

Feb.15th? Wow – do you write at the clinic or is it too distracting? How many hours a day is it (consuming) you? 🙂

    • Caitlin January 8, 2011, 3:59 pm

I do some work at the clinic but its hard. 🙁 Are you writing anything right now?

      • Baking 'n' Books January 8, 2011, 4:41 pm

I hear you. That “work” thing keeps getting in the way. Thank you so much for asking! That makes me kind of happy ;)…well, I am…but I fear that my “real” work has consumed my life and I have no choice. I feel more and more that I’m just being disillousined (oh my god – I don’t know how to spell that word?) and it’s all but a dream.

If you decide you need a full-time receptionist at the clinic – let me know :)…but I don’t think you can afford my student loans – hah!

  • Alexa @ The Girl In Chucks January 8, 2011, 3:49 pm

    Your earmuffs are rad! 🙂

  • Lizz @ Leading the Good Life January 8, 2011, 3:53 pm

I just painted my nails the same color! Love it! 🙂

  • Kara January 8, 2011, 4:12 pm

I am also a huge fan of unsauced tortellini. My husband has always said that I’m strange, but now I know I’m not alone 🙂

  • Kate (What Kate is Cooking) January 8, 2011, 4:18 pm

I prefer tortellini cold and without sauce as well 🙂

  • Natalia@TheHealthScript January 8, 2011, 4:49 pm

What a girl needs…what a girl wants. And now it’s stuck in my head 🙁 But yes every girl does need a manicure!

  • Rachel @ Grateful Girl Goes Gluten Free January 8, 2011, 4:54 pm

    Good grief I need a mani/pedi! And a haircut……

  • Christy January 8, 2011, 5:08 pm

I have an indoor trainer too which is my saving grace on rainy days. But where did you get that black bag that holds your remote control? Love it!

    • Caitlin January 8, 2011, 5:09 pm

Just at the regular bike store! It’s really for bars and gels 🙂

  • Stephanie January 8, 2011, 5:19 pm

    Cute color!

  • Jenna @Eating Green, Staying Lean January 8, 2011, 5:37 pm

Glad you got in some “me” time! Are your earmuffs also headphones? Or are you wearing headphones underneath? I’ve been debating buying a pair of earmuff/headphones to walk to work/run in, but not sure if they’re worth it.

  • Katherine @ Left Coast Contessa January 8, 2011, 5:49 pm

Lunch looks yummy! I agree with you, nothing makes me feel better than a manicure.

  • Priyanka January 8, 2011, 5:52 pm

I love that nail color, actually I love anything that is purple! Your lunch looks yummy.

  • Lisa January 8, 2011, 5:58 pm

I’ve yet to be able to figure out where to put the remote control on the bike trainer. Looks like you figured out something good.

    • Caitlin January 8, 2011, 6:09 pm

cup in bottle holder –> remote in cup

      • Marie-Journey to Body Zen January 8, 2011, 8:12 pm

i just hang a small paper bag (with handles) from the handlebars and put my remote in it. 🙂 then i can actually put a water bottle in my bottle holder!

  • Rae January 8, 2011, 6:07 pm

I freaking love that you use your bento box as a holder for the remote. Awesome 🙂

  • Mary @ Bites and Bliss January 8, 2011, 6:29 pm

The manicure’s very cute and so are those ear muffs! 🙂

  • Amanda (Eating Up) January 8, 2011, 6:34 pm

I love tortellini without sauce too. Yum!

  • Emilie January 8, 2011, 6:38 pm

Cute color on the nails! Good luck meeting your deadline. I know it probably seems impossible, but you can do it!

  • Shannon January 8, 2011, 6:49 pm

Just had to comment that we have the same remote! Haha!

  • Shari January 8, 2011, 7:18 pm

Love the nail polish color – it’s so springy in the midst of this ongoing winter wonderland everyone seems to be experiencing lately 🙂

    Good luck with the writing!!

  • Maria January 8, 2011, 7:21 pm

    LOVE the nail color!

  • Ashley January 8, 2011, 7:40 pm

Cute manicure! What a fun color!

  • Nica January 8, 2011, 7:46 pm

Question about the raw oats in your breakfast: do they get mushy or stay the original texture?

    • Caitlin January 9, 2011, 10:42 am

It depends. You can pre-make it (overnight oats) and mix it up and it becomes mushy (and good). If you do it right before you eat it, it’s a little firmer.

  • Elizabeth @ The Sweet Life January 8, 2011, 7:53 pm

Sometimes a manicure can make everything seem so much better! I know it just makes me feel really put together, even if life really isn’t!

  • Daniel January 8, 2011, 8:34 pm

I saw a while back that you got some neat bike implement that allows you to ride inside and I was wondering if that works for all bikes, or if I could find something similar? I can’t stand watching TV because of the lack of moving around but if I could pedal while watching it (or reading a book, etc.) that’d be so awesome!

Also, sorry I don’t have much to input on manicures, but a hot shower is always something destressing for me. 😉

    • Caitlin January 9, 2011, 10:43 am

Yup I think the Bell Motivator works with all bikes!

  • Amber K January 8, 2011, 9:05 pm

That sounds like a perfect day. 🙂

  • Kiran January 8, 2011, 10:13 pm

I am longing for a manicure now 😀

  • Liz @ Tip Top Shape January 8, 2011, 10:23 pm

Love the manicure! Such a cute color!!

  • Amanda January 8, 2011, 11:35 pm

Your post convinced me to give myself a mani/pedi today … always such a great feeling and way to destress. Also, saw Black Swan this afternoon and had to come back here to read your review. So interesting!

  • E (from One Twenty Five) January 9, 2011, 1:34 am

Caitlin, I am going to go buy myself a pretty lilac polish, to match yours (I’m a copycat like that). Now if only I could find myself a Doctor to give me such a stunning ring….

(Ps OMG… I saw your response to my previous comment!! Do I read your blog? That’s like asking, do I like carbs? Yes and yes. I honestly nearly fell off my chair (fine! I mean, fell out of bed) when I read your response Thank you for reading, I’m so, so humbled, as you were such an inspiration to me this past fall when we were both training for our marathons. Oh, and also, I am 100% entering your Operation Beautiful contest, just trying to think of something creative 🙂

    • Caitlin January 9, 2011, 10:43 am

      Thanks E. 🙂

Fun fact: When he gave me that stunning ring he was a waiter! 🙂

I really am excited for your submission – I need it by January 26! I hope you apply.

  • Gill (snaxandthecity) January 9, 2011, 5:41 am

Hope you aren’t stressing out too much! Manicures work a treat though don’t they 🙂

  • Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) January 9, 2011, 7:35 am

    Love the nail color!! 😀

Sometimes a walk with a pup and a bike ride too can make a world of difference. I can’t wait to head out for a walk in the snow this afternoon. 😀

  • Marina January 9, 2011, 8:29 am

I could so use a mani/pedi! To get pampered a bit.
Love how you arranged your banana 😀

  • Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin January 9, 2011, 8:42 am

A girl definitely needs some pampering every once in a while! 😉 Love the colour you chose!

  • Caitlin January 9, 2011, 12:06 pm

I must say that your skin looks really great in the picture you posted! I just figured I would point that out!

    • Caitlin January 9, 2011, 12:23 pm

      🙂 Thank you!

  • Lauren January 9, 2011, 5:17 pm

OMG. Your ear muffs are amazing! 🙂
