Surprise, Surprise

Well, Carolina Pit BBQ was the last place I expected to find my breakfast!

Back in the airport – headed to an Operation Beautiful presentation in Ohio!  I’m speaking to young girls who belong to a church group.  I’m pretty pumped because this is the target audience for the book I’m currently writing finishing!  I’m sure the girls will provide me with some invaluable feedback.

Up at 5:25 meant I had no time for an at-home breakfast… luckily, Carolina Pit BBQ saved me!

I expected the buffet to be entirely meat and potatoes, but there was also steel-cut oatmeal.  I had grabbed a banana on my way to the airport, too.

A perfect traveling breakfast:

Dude sitting next to me in the terminal:  “Do you always take pictures of your breakfast?”

Me:  “Well, actually… yes I do.”

Dude: “Really? Why?”

Me: “Um… I write a blog about my life, through food.  I take pictures of everything I eat.”

Dude:  “Hmmmm.  Well, that’s cool!”

Ha! Did you give Dude your site address? P.S. Nice oatmeal find. I would have never looked in a bbq buffet!

  • chelsey @ clean eating chelsey January 28, 2011, 7:09 am

I don’t know why I’ve never thought of it before, but I belong to a HUGE church – and I’m going to submit your websites so they could think about booking YOU!

    • Caitlin January 28, 2011, 7:18 am

I’ll send you my speakers resume when I land!

  • Blog is the New Black January 28, 2011, 7:18 am

HAha, I bet the guy is reading your site!

  • Katie (Sweet Tater) January 28, 2011, 7:19 am

    hell yes that’s cool

  • Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine January 28, 2011, 7:23 am

I love conversations like that. My favorite was “Wow, that granola bar must be really really good.” I used to get weirded out, but now I just laugh it off!

  • Katherine: Unemployed January 28, 2011, 7:24 am

nothing better than a post that starts with bbq and ends with banana

  • Nicole of Raspberry Stethoscope January 28, 2011, 7:33 am

    That is hilarious!

  • Holly @ Couch Potato Athlete January 28, 2011, 7:33 am

At our work Christmas party we had these super adorable cupcakes — a coworker mentioned “we should take a picture” and a few people said “who takes pictures of their food? That is so strange” I just smiled and thought to myself “you have no idea how many people take pictures of their food!!!”

    Have a safe trip!

  • Ashley January 28, 2011, 7:37 am

Haha I haven’t had any commenters yet when I take pics. Hopefully they’re that nice about it or I might have to get creative with my answers “its a project for class.”

  • Beth January 28, 2011, 7:48 am

So I’m just curious–how old was the guy? Young people never seem to weirded out by my copious picture taking, but older folks just are always really confused!

    • Caitlin January 28, 2011, 9:09 am

      Probably 50 or 60!

  • Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg January 28, 2011, 7:50 am

Lol…funny exchange. I’ve had people stare, but never ask.

    Happy travels!

  • ashley@quasichick January 28, 2011, 7:56 am

I love it!! People always look at me too, especially the students in my classroom?!

  • Tracy January 28, 2011, 8:01 am

LOL I love that convo! I’ve always been too scared to take pics in public because of that!

  • Eliz@The Sweet Life January 28, 2011, 8:02 am

Safe travels and good luck speaking with the girls!

  • Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat January 28, 2011, 8:03 am

haha i bet dude is going to go home, figure out who you are, then realize he should have asked for your autograph because he practically met a celebrity!!!! good luck with the presentation Caitlin, i’m sure the girls will love you! 🙂

  • Maddie (Healthy Maddie) January 28, 2011, 8:17 am

Haha funny conversation! Glad you found a good airport breakfast.

  • Kara January 28, 2011, 8:17 am

I’ve never actually seen anyone take pictures of their food, and I don’t think I’d have the guts to ask! Maybe he was hitting on you 🙂

  • Kristina January 28, 2011, 8:25 am

HAHAHA-I’m still waiting for that question. I get weird looks but haven’t been questioned YET!

  • Stacie @ Imperfectly Healthy January 28, 2011, 8:31 am

Haha! I’ve never been asked and if I’m with people that I just kind of know I explain I have a blog. Still funny though!

  • Nicole January 28, 2011, 8:36 am

    Lol! Crazy camera lady.

  • Liz @ Tip Top Shape January 28, 2011, 8:38 am

haha, love that story! You totally should have given him your url!!

  • Parita@myinnershakti January 28, 2011, 8:44 am

That’s too funny! I’ve been thinking about that a lot lately too. Now that I started a blog, I will probably take my camera everywhere and take pictures of everything. I wonder how people will respond to that. Do you have any other funny stories?? Good luck today!

    • Caitlin January 28, 2011, 11:11 am

Once a lady in Costco yelled at me for taking pictures inside the store – it was lame!

  • Carly January 28, 2011, 8:52 am

I especially love the looks at a blogger get together when the whole group pulls out their cameras 🙂

Where in Ohio are you headed?

    • Caitlin January 28, 2011, 11:12 am

      Cincinatti!

      • whitney January 28, 2011, 11:32 am

Welcome to my city! sorry about the snow, but it is 5 inches less than last week at this time. Have fun in Cincinnati!

  • Katy (The Singing Runner) January 28, 2011, 8:54 am

Hahahahaha! I think I’ve had that same dude ask me that. 😉

  • Meg January 28, 2011, 8:56 am

Hahaha you should have told him your URL!

  • Camille January 28, 2011, 9:08 am

Haha, telling people about food blogging is like explaining high level physics to them. People are always baffled!

  • Stacey (The Home-Cooked Vegan) January 28, 2011, 9:12 am

    Haha!
And who would’ve thought that Carolina BBQ had steel cut oats?? Nice call!

  • Haleigh January 28, 2011, 9:16 am

I usually get Starbucks Oatmeal when I am out traveling, or I indulge in a delicious baked good. I would have never thought that Carolina BBQ has oatmeal though!

  • Haleigh January 28, 2011, 9:17 am

I usually opt for Starbucks Oatmeal when I am out traveling, or I will indulge in a delicious baked good! I would have never guessed that a BBQ place would have oatmeal though. Awesome! Maybe the rest of the country is finally catching up 😉

  • Tina @ Faith Fitness Fun January 28, 2011, 9:18 am

I love people’s reactions to picture taking of food when they have never heard of food or healthy living blogs. LOL

  • kaity January 28, 2011, 9:21 am

I get that kind of reaction too when people see me reading Food Blogs…”why are you looking at pictures of oatmeal”

    • Caitlin January 28, 2011, 11:13 am

      because oatmeal is awesommmme

  • Melanie @ Jon and Melie January 28, 2011, 9:24 am

That is so funny! I’d love to hear about other reactions you’ve gotten from people asking you why you are taking a picture of your food. 🙂

  • Ann @ Day by Day January 28, 2011, 9:27 am

That’s so funny. If I’m taking pictures of food, I can usually see that on people’s faces but I’ve never actually been asked. But when I see someone else in a restaurant taking pictures of their food, it makes me smile! My sister will go “Look, there’s another food blogger!” That must’ve been a nice surprise finding steel cut oats at a BBQ Place!

  • Amanda January 28, 2011, 9:27 am

    Where in Ohio are you?

    • Caitlin January 28, 2011, 11:14 am

      Cincinatti! whoop whoop!

  • Kelly January 28, 2011, 9:29 am

Haha, people can be so bold. Have a safe flight!

  • Allison @ Food For Healing January 28, 2011, 9:29 am

haha love it! i’ll be doing that while im in mexico. taking pictures of food is fun!

  • Cati @ crave and create January 28, 2011, 9:31 am

Welcome to Cincinnati! I hope you have some time to explore while you’re here. If you get the chance, you should definitely check out Melt in the Northside neighborhood for excellent vegan/vegetarian soups, sandwiches, and salads (or brunch on Sunday).

    • Caitlin January 28, 2011, 11:15 am

      Thanks for the recommendations!

    • whitney January 28, 2011, 11:42 am

I second this recommendation as Melt is my go to veggie cafe. Also, Loving Cafe in Pleasant Ridge is quite tasty. It is all vegan.

  • Tracey @ I'm Not Superhuman January 28, 2011, 9:33 am

That’s why I feel weird taking photos in restaurants. I haven’t jumped over that I’m-being-strange-in-public hurdle.

  • Lucy January 28, 2011, 9:39 am

Hey Caitlin, Have fun in Ohio! I would recommend Sky Line chili but I’m not sure how you could do that for a vegetarian:)

Also, I thought of you yesterday while watching Good Morning America at the gym. They highlighted a new makeup brand coming out at Walmart that is targeted specifically at “tweens.” The conversation was whether or not it was appropriate for 8-12 year old to be wearing makeup. I believe the line was called “Geogirl.” This could be a fun topic for you to write a post about, since I know you’ve discussed it before. Good luck in Cinci!

    • Caitlin January 28, 2011, 11:16 am

Thanks so much – I’ll check out the GMA website!

  • Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table January 28, 2011, 9:44 am

Bwhahahaha! I think people staring makes the meal that much better. 🙂

    P.S. Hi BBQ Breakfast Dude!

  • Caitlyn (A Spoonful of Life) January 28, 2011, 9:46 am

Awesome breakfast conversation! I love his last comment…”Hmmm…That’s cool!” Made me laugh!

  • sarah k. @ the pajama chef January 28, 2011, 9:48 am

yeah! enjoy ohio! love it there 🙂 (i went to college in ohio)

  • kate January 28, 2011, 9:48 am

I love the conversation! Ive never had anyone ask me outright about taking photos, but I wish they would! Its a great conversation starter!

  • Sara January 28, 2011, 9:52 am

Hahah ‘ dude: “Well, that’s cool”‘. Love it!!!
    Sara

  • Freya January 28, 2011, 10:03 am

LOL I hope you pointed out to the guy who asked questions, that taking pictures of your food has made your fortune, so you’re obvs doing something right 😛

  • Sara @ OurDogBuffy January 28, 2011, 10:07 am

    Love the breakfast guy.

  • Kate (What Kate is Cooking) January 28, 2011, 10:09 am

Haha! No one has asked me why I’m taking pictures of my food yet 🙂

  • Laura Ann January 28, 2011, 10:14 am

Ha! I always wonder how often you get asked about that!

    • Caitlin January 28, 2011, 11:17 am

Not as much as you would think really! People are too wrapped up in their own stuff to really notice what other people are doing.

      • Ellie@fitforthesoul January 28, 2011, 2:23 pm

That’s soo true huhh~It’s funny though b/c lately my family has been getting so used to my taking pics of what I make and eat that they just kind of ignore it! Before it was more like, “uhhh whatcha doin’?” 😛

  • Lizz (leadingthegoodlife) January 28, 2011, 10:22 am

Good find! I probably wouldn’t have even looked there for something to eat. Safe travels! (When you travel I always think of you kissing the plane, now! :))

  • Kathie @ Frugal Fit and Fabulous January 28, 2011, 10:29 am

    hahaha..niceeeeeeee…told through the life of a blogger..haha

  • Maryann January 28, 2011, 10:32 am

Haha that probably wasn’t the answer he was expecting to get!

  • Samantha @ Health, Happiness & Skinny Jeans January 28, 2011, 10:40 am

Haha! I always wonder what people must think when they see this. I guess as blogs become more and more popular it won’t seem so different when someone catches us doing it!

  • Gill (snaxandthecity) January 28, 2011, 11:23 am

haha love that. i’ve only just started blogging and i do notice the weird looks people give me. but then, there’s a lot MORE odd stuff going on in the world than taking photos of food, so i kinda don’t care!!

  • Amanda @ JustAmandaJ January 28, 2011, 11:23 am

Prior to knowing about food blogs I would have been so weirded out by someone taking food pics, and also not had the guts to ask the person what they were doing. Now that I know though I’ve never actually seen anyone do it, but I kinda want to so I can go up and ask them about their blog!

  • Kacy January 28, 2011, 11:33 am

It always shocks me how interested people are when they here I have a blog.

    Have a safe trip!

  • Mary (What's Cookin' with Mary) January 28, 2011, 11:35 am

Your airpirt conversation makes me smile!!

When B goes out of town for business, often times he will take a picture of his dinner to show me 😀 …people will ask why he’s doing that and he says that it’s bc his wife is a food blogger and she’d want to see. Love him!

  • Mary @ Bites and Bliss January 28, 2011, 11:59 am

lmho! I wonder what people think when I take pictures of food. Last time we were out to dinner, I took my SLR and my mom was like “they’re gonna think you’re some spy from another restaurant!” haha

  • Heather January 28, 2011, 12:03 pm

I love when people think that having a food blog is cool!

I told some of my class mates about it (I take night classes at the local university) and it was an 18-20 year old guy that was the most excited! I was soooo suprised!

  • Jen January 28, 2011, 12:04 pm

Have fun in Ohio, let me know if you are ever in Michigan 🙂 LOL @ dude at the airport, I don’t get questions, just weird looks. Oh well!

  • LIz January 28, 2011, 12:19 pm

Haha, that’s why I always feel self conscious taking photos! I guess I just have to get over it!

  • Meri January 28, 2011, 12:30 pm

How cool that you get the opportunity to reach so many young girls. It must be really fun to get to come up with presentations to give! Good for you!

Good luck today, interested to hear how it goes!!

  • Allison @ Happy Tales January 28, 2011, 1:14 pm

heck YES it’s cool!!!! Your kids (and theirs!) will be able to look back on this one day… I don’t think anything can be a greater gift than that. That’s part of the reason why I thought it’d be neat to start my own blog! (is that creepy/morbid??) I know that I’ve found myself wishing that my grandparents were still around to tell me stories (they passed away when I was really young) so that might be a part of it, too.

  • Kathleen @ Kat's Health Corner January 28, 2011, 1:38 pm

Hehe, that dude is pretty funny! 🙂

  • Ashley @ Thefitacademic January 28, 2011, 1:54 pm

what a funny story about the stranger at the airport! I’d probably respond to his initial question with something smart-alec like “Well yes, I do. Do you always interrogate strangers at the airport about their lives?” Well…..let’s be honest….i wouldn’t say that. But I’d think it ; )

  • Julie (A Case of the Runs) January 28, 2011, 2:04 pm

I love how when I’m getting something and they see I’m gonna take a photo of it, they’d sometimes be like, “Let me give you the better-looking piece.” LOL

  • Lisa January 28, 2011, 2:20 pm

Aren’t those conversations fun? Super fun….
    Awkward!

  • Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin January 28, 2011, 3:03 pm

Haha I rarely take pictures in public because I want to avoid conversations like those! At least he thought it was cool though. 😀

  • Sheryl January 28, 2011, 5:50 pm

I’m not a food blogger, but my Dad, Aunt and I routinely swap texted photos of our food when we’re having something particularly yummy – I choose to ignore the odd glances in my direction!
