Dog-Gone Awful

in All Posts

The big event of the afternoon was that Maggie had to go to the vet.  She hates the vet.  Tail-tucked-in, quaking-in-her-paws hates the entire experience.

IMG_9234

She had a strange bump on her belly that I had tested to make sure it wasn’t cancerous (it’s not).

The vet also informed me that Maggie needs to stop eating James’ leftovers. 🙁

So… anyone want to talk me into doing yoga again regularly?  I have completely fallen off the yoga wagon, and I KNOW it’s not good for me to slack on yoga as I train for my half marathon.  I swear, getting out the door is 99% of the battle.  Help!

Writing snackage included apple with chocolate peanut butter (from Earth Fare):

IMG_9229

And sugar cookie that I scored at grocery store.  Harry the Dragon always has fresh cookies sitting out. 😉

IMG_9235 IMG_9236

I wrote/worked at the clinic/ran errands until so late!  Snacked on toast and hummus to power through:

IMG_9247

And the Husband was responsible for dinner…

At Earth Fare, we discovered this vegan ravioli that was stuffed with mushrooms.  It was in the “scoop and freeze” section of pasta – which I LOVE!  And I would’ve never guessed it was vegan.  He served it with tomato sauce, kale, and vegan Italian sausage.

I have a fun post for tomorrow entitled, “So You Wanna Run a 5K…”  Stay tuned!

Oh I can’t wait for tomorrows post! I’m running my first 5k on March 6th!

  • Sarah for Real January 31, 2011, 9:28 pm

Never would have guessed your dinner is all vegan! It looks delicious!

… which is not to say that vegan food doesn’t normally look delicious. Two separate statements there. You get what I mean. I hope.

    • Caitlin January 31, 2011, 9:33 pm

I do and I feel the same way!

  • Allison @ Happy Tales January 31, 2011, 9:37 pm

Aw, I recognize that vet!!! We take Happy there!!! They are seriously THE BEST! And I’ll totally hop on the yoga bandwagon with you. I have never been on it, and need some major help getting there! I just took a new-to-me class at the Y tonight called Nia. It was interesting. I think I’ve ruled it out for my cross training… so I’m definitely in the market for trying yoga!

  • Jessica @ Jessica Balances January 31, 2011, 9:41 pm

Maggie is the cutest dog in the world, hands down! My family and I used to have a little girl basset, and she would get little lumps on her back randomly. The vet always said it was no big deal, but it freaked us out! Also… advice for getting yourself to yoga: think of it as charity/giving to yourself. I know that sounds weird, but my yoga instuctor talked about it tonight and it really makes sense if you think about it. 🙂

  • Gabby (Quest for Delicious) January 31, 2011, 9:53 pm

Ohh, I’ll be looking forward to the post! (: I’ve been wanting to do a 5k.

  • courtney @ the granola chronicles January 31, 2011, 9:57 pm

I’m excited for the 5k post! I enjoy running, just not super long distances. This will be perfect!

  • Molly January 31, 2011, 9:57 pm

mmm I wish my store had a cookie dragon!
my dog hates the vet too…he hides under my legs. He’s an 80 pound lab. yea, what a baby.

  • Lizz @ Leading the Good Life January 31, 2011, 9:59 pm

What do you mean by “scoop and freeze”? Bulk pasta?

    • Caitlin January 31, 2011, 10:01 pm

      Yup exactly!

  • Ilana January 31, 2011, 9:59 pm

Well, I DO wanna run a 5K and I’ve never run even half a mil in my life, soooo, can’t wait for your post. That was my only goal for 2011 – run a 10k.

My cat HATES the vet so much, somehow he knows to disappear and hide somewhere we can’t find him on the vet day. It’s crazy! Every single year, we have to go twice because we manage to get our other two into the car, but we can never find Hector!

  • Susan January 31, 2011, 10:01 pm

Well, I’ll be strange lump buddies w/Maggie – I have a strange lump in my armpit that I am waiting on MRI results to find out what it is. And that’s not nerve wracking…not at all.

And I always like the concept of yoga, but I’m so much about – “But wait – it can’t be exercise, it feels too easy! I don’t want to waste my exercise time on it!”. Even though I love it when I do it. It really relaxes me – takes all the tension out. There ya go – that’s why you need to go. To get all the tension out. And I guess I do too, now that I think about it!

    • Caitlin February 1, 2011, 9:14 am

I hope you are OK! Let me know how it goes. I’ll be thinking of you!

  • Marisa @ Loser for Life January 31, 2011, 10:02 pm

    Poor Maggie 🙁

I have to get my hands on some chocolate peanut butter!!!

  • Stacy @ Every Little Thing January 31, 2011, 10:03 pm

Have you tried the Dave Farmar podcasts? You wouldn’t have to leave the house!

    • Cyndi Eggers January 31, 2011, 10:17 pm

They (Farmar FREE podcasts) are awesome! I learned about them from another runner/blogger. Totally broke a sweat the last session I did – in my living room!

  • Kristina January 31, 2011, 10:04 pm

Poor Maggie-she looks so cute!!!! My dog shakes obsessively as soon as we get in the door! Crazy how they just know.

Make a calendar that you check off the days that you go-you’ll want to check it off so you’ll go!

  • Sarah (Sarah Learns) January 31, 2011, 10:05 pm

i’m glad maggie is ok! bummer about no more leftovers though… does she steal james’ food or does she only finish what he doesn’t want? my sassy puppy will steal his brother’s food if he gets done eating first.

    • Caitlin February 1, 2011, 9:15 am

He isn’t super food focused and will just walk away from half a bowl of food, she then swoops in.

  • Katy (The Singing Runner) January 31, 2011, 10:05 pm

My cats back at home HATE going to the vet. Seriously one of them becomes violent and starts biting and hissing. It’s a little scary. :O

    • Casey February 1, 2011, 7:53 am

My dog gets so scared, she poops. We have learned that you take her into the building first, then immediately take her back outside. Either that or she will poop right on the floor of the lobby!

  • Amanda (Eating Up) January 31, 2011, 10:06 pm

Don’t think about doing yoga. Just DO it. Make your body go, and your mind will follow.

  • Kaitlin January 31, 2011, 10:07 pm

your post title was ‘dog-gone awful’ 😉 jk, love the puns!

I have one for you: my nephew submitted ten puns to a joke competition hoping to win. unfortunately, no pun in ten did.

  • Kiran January 31, 2011, 10:10 pm

Thank god Maggie is fine 🙂 I need some major yoga inspiration too kick me out of the door as well 😀

  • annette January 31, 2011, 10:12 pm

Wow, your dinner looks fantastic! I always love your healthy, vegetarian recipes….you inspired me tonight and I made black bean burgers-and they were t-a-s-t-y 🙂

  • Carolyn January 31, 2011, 10:12 pm

Ahhhh those cookies from Harris Teeter always get me too! (My family lives in Charlotte, and I go to school up near Greensboro). And I definitely usually go for the regular ones, compared to the sugar free. I figure they’re so small there can’t be THAT big of a difference…. right, right?

  • Camille January 31, 2011, 10:14 pm

Yummy looking dinner. I wish we had free cookie samples at the grocery store!

  • Sara (Miles and Manhattan) January 31, 2011, 10:14 pm

Ach sorry about Maggie but very glad it was nothing. Jersey has had some benign bumps and the vet says something it just happens. Oy!

  • Samantha @ Health, Happiness & Skinny Jeans January 31, 2011, 10:17 pm

Glad Maggie is ok! She’s a cutie 🙂

  • maria @ Chasing the Now January 31, 2011, 10:23 pm

Maybe try a yoga video at home if you can’t get yourself out the door. I’ve been doing Bob Harper’s new video and LOVE IT!

  • Rachel @ Fit Fun and Fabulous January 31, 2011, 10:26 pm

Ha we are polar opposites. You can get me into a yoga class ANY day but it is a rare day that I think “boy howdy! I’d love to lace up my sneaks and go for a run”…even though I ran 8 races last year lol.

  • Victoria (District Chocoholic) January 31, 2011, 10:26 pm

If you can figure out a way to make yourself go out the door to yoga, I’m all ears. I also feel better afterwards, but I can’t make myself do it like I can make myself lift, etc.

  • Karen Bowers January 31, 2011, 10:27 pm

the easiest way to go to yoga is to go with a friend or to at least meet the friend there. that social connection really makes a big difference for me.

    • Caitlin February 1, 2011, 9:16 am

Good advice… I’m going to email some friends!

    • Amanda February 1, 2011, 10:04 am

I agree about the social connection. I have some yoga friends that I met through yoga and only see at yoga, so when I’m having one of those “do I go” days, I feel like I’ll disappoint them if I don’t show up!

  • Kristy@RunTheLongRoad January 31, 2011, 10:28 pm

I just bought a monthly unlimited pass for yoga. It was pretty expensive so that motivates me to get my money’s worth!

  • Lisa January 31, 2011, 10:47 pm

Poor puppies! My Fat Kitty is a big boy. He’s long and muscular but despite that he’s still overweight. Poor kitty….

  • Parita@myinnershakti January 31, 2011, 10:57 pm

    Chocolate PB?!?!? Pure heaven!

And I feel you on the yoga issue. I know it’s really good for you, especially if you run, but it’s hard to get into it! I think you just have to start and turn it into a habit…don’t they say it takes 21 days? Am I making that up?! LOL!

  • Kacy January 31, 2011, 10:58 pm

I’m glad things are okay with Maggie!

  • the veg meg January 31, 2011, 10:59 pm

Get back on the yoga wagon for me, because I can’t really make it more than once a week anymore because my school&work schedule is at serious odds with my studio’s (and I have 15 classes pre-paid at this studio, so I can’t just switch!) And I’m probably not going to get my one-a-week Saturday morning class in this week either… I’ll just live vicariously through you (and at-home podcasts, I guess)!

  • Lindsey January 31, 2011, 11:06 pm

Are those Harris Teeter cookies? I used to LOVE THEM when I lived down south!

    • Caitlin February 1, 2011, 9:16 am

      Yes they are!

  • Ashley January 31, 2011, 11:24 pm

I’m so ready for the 5k post. I realy need some motivation to actually train to complete that goal!

  • Sana January 31, 2011, 11:25 pm

Oh Maggie, why must you give your mommy sucha hardtime?!?!?!

  • Marissa C January 31, 2011, 11:29 pm

Having the yoga issue here too. I’m grouponing my way through the local studios in Dallas, though–it is hard to get bored when you are in a new studio every 30 days! Need to check out that podcast for when my groupons run out in June

  • Leah @ Why Deprive? January 31, 2011, 11:34 pm

My dog hates the vet too, but she lets him do whatever – I think she just wants to get it over with.
Glad the lump wasnt a big deal. I found one near my dogs “lower area” but it turned out to be nothing too. Scary stuff though.

  • Laura January 31, 2011, 11:48 pm

Found a book at the library this weekend and thought of your work on the Operation Beautiful for Tweens book–it’s called “Good Girls Don’t Get Fat”, and it both describes the pressures that teen girls face to fit society’s ideal body image as well as tips for parents to deal with their kids’ issues and not contribute to them. I’m only part of the way through, but it’s very good so far. You might find it helpful if you haven’t read it already.

    • Caitlin February 1, 2011, 9:18 am

Thanks for the recommendation!!! I’m looking into this now.

  • Beatrix @ Beaglebea January 31, 2011, 11:55 pm

Yeah, Buster doesn’t like the vet either… and I’ve been slacking on my yoga too and I’m training for a 9 km race.

  • Pdb February 1, 2011, 12:21 am

I’m more of a Pilates person because I always thought that yoga was too slow. However, I’ve recently taken up hot yoga and I will never complain about yoga not working me out enough again! Lol

  • Jenny February 1, 2011, 12:22 am

Hi Caitlin, what brand of toast do you buy? Thanks!

    • Caitlin February 1, 2011, 9:22 am

It’s called La Brea and it’s from Harris Teeters

  • Taysa February 1, 2011, 12:23 am

You should try yogatoday.com. I love their free weekly class, the scenery is always gorgeous, and I love that I can do it at home with candles. Even if I don’t feel like doing it, I tell myself that I should at least get in 15 minutes. It usually is enough to hook me and before I know it an hour has gone by.

  • Leila @ Spinach and Skittles February 1, 2011, 12:23 am

Poor Maggie 🙁 My pup loves the vet, (or rather smelling all the other animals at the vet), but then remembers she hates it there when we wind up in the closed sterile room.
Mushroom ravioli’s sound way better than my dinner!

  • veggietestkitchen February 1, 2011, 1:05 am

you can make your own ravs at home, really easily by using wonton wrappers from the chinese market. that way you can stuff them with whatever you want: tofutti, cashew cheese, you name it. i posted about this more in depth on my site, but i love that it’s possible to get these items fully (meaning the vegan ravs you found) off the shelf. our lives are becoming easier =)

  • Amanda (modernation) February 1, 2011, 1:07 am

Go back and read old post-yoga posts and remember how good it feels. Then next time you make it to the studio, write down how you feel after and stick it on the mirror. I am sure you have a post-it or two laying around the house. 😉

  • Gill (snaxandthecity) February 1, 2011, 3:45 am

maybe get a monthly pass or some kind of yoga commitment thing going, where you’ll want to go for many reasons $$ included!

  • Lauren February 1, 2011, 6:50 am

Haha our little one hates the vet too! Actually, she LOVES the doctor but hates the process of going to the vet. Once the cute doctor comes in, she seems to calm down. 🙂 Hahaha, just like her mama!

  • DadHTP February 1, 2011, 7:30 am

try a hatha yoga, 30 minute DVD with 10 minutes of meditation – asks for requests – I’ll piggyback on it!

  • Suzanne @ continuing my education February 1, 2011, 7:54 am

Haha, those cookies at teeter are the only things that get me to go to the grocery store some days! Sad, but true!

  • Stephanie February 1, 2011, 8:14 am

I’m trying to get back on the yoga bandwagon too! Yoga to the People (based out of NY) has free yoga podcasts for those days you can’t quite make it out the door! (www.yogatothepeople.com)

  • Paige @Running Around Normal February 1, 2011, 8:14 am

Aww I’m so glad Maggie is OK!! 🙂

  • Maddie (Healthy Maddie) February 1, 2011, 8:17 am

My dog hates the vet too. Now we buy her a toy afterwards so it’s not such a bad experience. I’m glad Maggie is ok!

  • Becky February 1, 2011, 8:21 am

I’ve been going to my studio 2-3 days a week but I’ll jump on the bandwagon of support. I always feel SO much better when I make time for yoga! I know you will too if you just get over the hurdle of getting to the studio and the first few classes back in the groove.

  • M February 1, 2011, 8:21 am

All I know is when I finish a great HOT Moksha yoga class (a hot yoga studio chain that is pretty eco-conscious and community minded!)I feel mentally soooo amazing.
I swear hot yoga is therapy for my mind-I really go for mental reasons over physical. It soothes my soul-and I am guessing with a year filled with book deadlines ,you may need more of this peace of mind than ever before.

So perhaps if you think of it as good for your SOUL rather than body, your mind will encourage you out that door.

I also find it hard to get out and going though-the cold makes me want to hibernate and I am pretty lazy as far as trying at home yoga options-I need a yoga class to make me focus and not be distracted !

    • Caitlin February 1, 2011, 9:22 am

this is good advice.. thank you!

  • Tami February 1, 2011, 8:26 am

don’t eat those cookies unless you dig to the bottom of the container…I have seen my fair share of nasty little hands in there!!! (and never bought anything in the front part of the grocery cart either-yucko diapers!)

  • Laurie February 1, 2011, 9:03 am

Oh poor Maggie! I’m glad she’s OK! Caitlin, I’ve been trying to get my doxie to slim down too. Maggie doesn’t look overweight to me compare to my dog. My dog acts hungry all the time, and everytime I try to get him on the right path, he will get into something (like getting inside a cabinet that had chocolate in it!, I did call the vet and he’s OK, but still he’s driving me crazy!)

  • Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin February 1, 2011, 9:03 am

Phew, so glad to hear that Maggie is okay!

I’m having trouble sticking to doing yoga regularly too. Maybe you should hold a yoga challenge to get yourself and us readers motivated! 😀

  • Anna @ Doing Good & Living Well February 1, 2011, 9:04 am

Oooo, I love Harry the Dragon’s cookies — but I always wonder how many slimy little kid hands have touched the cookie I’m about to pop in my mouth… I usually ignore those hesitations and enjoy a yummy cookie.

  • Sara @ OurDogBuffy February 1, 2011, 9:06 am

Harry the Dragon is too cute. Earth Fare sounds awesome. I really liked the “meat” sauce–making it with Morningstar. What a good idea. I thought it’d freak me out but decided to give it a try and really liked it. Thanks!

  • Balanced Healthy Life February 1, 2011, 9:09 am

I’m actually posting an interview I did with a yogi on my blog today (Tuesday). It is really informative, encouraging and extremely motivating. You can check it out at

    http://balancedhealthylife.com

I should be posting it late morning!

  • Alex @ Healing Beauty February 1, 2011, 9:15 am

I’ve been doing yoga every day and it just does wonders for me. It makes me feel happier, more connected to my body, more flexible…overall it is often the highlight of my day. There is a yoga video called Yogalosophy and it is by Jennifer Aniston’s yoga teacher. It pairs poses with toning exercises and I like putting the video on the silent mode and listening to music for a quick yoga workout when I don’t have time for my other yoga workouts. Hope that helps!

  • Brittney February 1, 2011, 9:19 am

Awww, poor Maggie! Glad she’s ok. You’re welcome to join Jen and I at OM sometime if you want to trek down to our area! I’ve been going about twice a week and it’s great!

  • Julia February 1, 2011, 9:38 am

Can you prepay for yoga by buying a 10-class card or something like that? For me that is a great motivator…if I have already paid for it, I can’t not go!

    • M February 1, 2011, 10:20 am

Good idea! I buy three month unlimited passes and have to say if I miss too many days in a row I also feel a bit of financial “guilt” which is sometime a kick in the pants for sure 🙂

  • Beth February 1, 2011, 10:23 am

For yoga, make yourself either go to the studio or do a 20 minute download every day for a week. You can ALWAYS find 20 minute for an easy stretchy yoga, and once you get back into the habit you’ll want to go more! At least, thats what I keep telling myself 🙂

  • Rachel February 1, 2011, 12:25 pm

I found that while I love yoga and love the benefits from it, I SUCK at actually going to a yoga studio. Instead, I do a little yoga everyday in front of my TV. I’ve found that if I roll my mat up, I don’t use it,so I leave my mat rolled out so it is always taunting me, and I usually find 5-20 minutes to stretch and practice.
