Redefining Beautiful
In case you’ve missed these ladies on the Early Show, the Today Show, and in numerous online magazines…
200 high school girls in Texas have pledged to forgo make-up in an effort to “redefine beautiful.” They say there were inspired by Operation Beautiful. You can read the article here (which includes my thoughts on the movement) here.
As I’ve written about before, I’m trying to break my habit of always makeup, which started when I was in high school. I’m not saying makeup is inherently bad, but I like how these girls are working on feeling comfortable with who they are naturally. Did you wear makeup in high school? Do you wear it every day?

Wow, what an amazing segment! Congrats on inspiring such an awesome movement.
I did wear some make up on most days. I was a basket ball player my freshman year, so I wore different colors for fun. By my senior year I was back to very minimal. Now I do not wear make up everyday and even go a week before putting some on. Too much hassle most days.
I saw it! I was so amazed and proud of these girls.
I do wear some type of makeup everyday, but I do try and not wear any on Sunday. It’s such a habit, hard to break!
this is absolutely beautiful and inspiring. makes me so, SO happy.
I wore some make up in high school, but not a lot. But, I probably wore more in high school than I do now. It just doesn’t interest me as much as it used to.
I really wish I could, but I get tired of people asking me if I’m sick when I’m not wearing any. I’ll at least tone down the eyes some days.
Uh, so the first half of my comment deleted itself…
I said that I began wearing makeup as a sophomore, and it was usually just coverup and mascara. I started having more fun with it in college, and that’s morphed in to what I do today. As far as giving it up, really wish I could, but I get tired of people asking me if I’m sick when I’m not wearing any. I’ll at least tone down the eyes some days.
don’t you just love when people say, “are you ok? you look tired!” um.. thanks?
haha i wear makeup to class everyday except during finals (lasts about 3 weeks, no time for makeup). sometimes i wish no one had ever invented makeup because its time-consuming & costly, but most days i don’t really mind applying it. i just wish i felt more comfortable without it :-/
lol – I know! It’s weird how just a little mascara can change someone’s perception of you…jerks
My Mom was strict when I was growing up – I can remember wanting to wear “clogs” and plastic Madonna bracelets… and make-up and never being allowed to. Funny thing – the boys I think felt less… I don’t know – intimidated. They called me “nature girl” which I kind of grew to like – and it made me less sad that Mom kept me from so many things my friends had. I still rarely wear make-up – my sons will ask – “where ya going” when they see it on me because they know it means either a business meeting or dinner out with dad. Also, to go along with your point – I knew my husband was the real deal (and that we were, too) because we met and only spent time together at work… where I had to wear totally unattractive work uniforms and a baseball hat (which look awful on me.) I always said if he could love me like that then we really have something!
I saw them on the show this morning! We cannot wear makeup at all in culinary school which took some getting used to but more often than not I go without it everywhere now, which was never the case!
I didn’t wear makeup in high school, I had some, but never really used it. I did off and on in college, but more off than on. Now that I’m out of school, I don’t really use makeup much, even though I love it- sometimes it can take a bit of time, and I don’t always have the time.
I saw this on the Today show this morning. It made me smile to hear them mention Operation Beautiful.
I can’t remember if I wore makeup everyday in high school, but probably mosts. The funny thing is that today as a 27 year old, there are several days a month that I go to work sans makeup. Mostly because I’m trying to save a few moments in the AM, but at least now I have a better reason!
It’s funny you posted this this morning! I’m on my way to Farmer’s Market, then straight to the gym. I’m all distressed because I don’t have make up on (obviously, I’m going to the gym!) and am worried about who I might run into at Farmer’s Market. Logically, it’ll be lots of un-showered un-made up people, and I’ll fit right in, but it’s definitely crossing my mind!
Off I go, make-up free!
Hey Caitlin- Welcome back to Knoxville! If you’re going to be here for a little while and you’re doing a blogger meet-up, I’d love to come if I can.
I missed the last one because of work… Enjoy Tennessee!
I didn’t wear make up until I started wearing contacts freshman year. I wore a little almost every day in high school. In college, I only wore it when I was going out. Now, I wear base almost every day but hardly anything else. I’m just too lazy!
This is a great movement!
I am fa-reezing this morning! Brrr! I was just blogging about breakfast at someone else’s house and how I always break out of my routine — for instance, I went for toast and eggs today instead of my usual oats.
I wore makeup every day in high school and still wear it now. Honestly, I have more confidence with a little something on (just a little foundation and blush for very casual) and especially can’t imagine going to work clean-faced.
I’ve made it to senior year of college without ever becoming a regular make-up wearer, so I don’t plan on starting any time soon. I pretty much only wear it if I go out somewhere nice on weekends, or for special events/parties.
I never wear makeup. I wasn’t allowed to wear it in until I was a Junior in high school and by then I was too interested in atheltics to care. Then college came and I never got into it and now at the age of 30 I wear mascara sometimes oh and lip gloss…but that’s it!
In middle school and high school, I felt like I couldn’t leave the house without concealer or foundation to cover my uneven skin. As I got older, I realized that was making my skin worse. I ditched the make up and my complexion cleared. Now, if I wear even that much make-up for a wedding or some other special occasion, my skin revolts for a couple of weeks! My skin is still shiny and my skin tone isn’t exactly even all around, but I don’t care. It’s better than relying on make-up every single day.
Your dogs look so adorable
!
I started wearing makeup in high school but stopped after a year because I didn’t see a need for it everyday when I wasn’t even 16! I started again when I entered college but didn’t wear it every day my senior year. Nowadays I don’t wear it every day because I don’t like spending too much time on it.
I didn’t really wear any makeup in high school but I started to in college. It does take up a lot of time! I usually use mascara, sometimes eyeliner, sometimes foundation. Maybe I should cut back.
I rarely ever wear makeup honestly. In the past year, I’ve worn it once and it was for a wedding I was in! Crazy but it’s totally me. I don’t have anything against makeup but just generally like rocking the ‘au natural’ look.
I’ve had an on-again, off-again relationship with make-up since grade 8. Usually on work days I wear tinted moisturizer, blush and eyeliner. On weekends, I tend to go without. To be honest, I don’t think that wearing make-up is actually good for my skin, so I would like to wean myself off, or at least onto more naturally-based products. I’ve been thinking about trying mineral make-up for weekdays.
I’ve never worn makeup regularly and I’m so glad that I didn’t. My face is my face every day and I rarely worry about what it looks like at this point. As long as my skin is clear and my eyebrows aren’t too scary I’m happy! I love what fresh air and the natural environment do to my looks – face, hair and all. That’s my beauty and I’m proud of it!
I don’t wear makeup — when I “dress up” for weddings or other special occasions I put on a bit of powder and some mascara. Thats it. To be honest, I don’t know how to put makeup on! My mom doesn’t wear any and therefore couldn’t “teach” me how to wear it. So I don’t. I prefer a natural look anyway — and Jason does too, so it works well for me
Yes, I used to wear WAY TOO MUCH makeup in highschool! Now I just wear eyeshadow, blush, lip glosh and mascara……..love it…..=)
Look what you started! How awesome! I would sneek putting on make up in middle school and take it off before my mom got home from work, because she said I was not old enough to wear it. Now, I hardly wear make up at all and I try not to wear any on the weekends. I am now a police officer and while in the academy we usually had 10 minutes to shower and be in uniform and formation ready for inspection. There was not time for makeup or fixing our hair. Keep up the great work.
I used to wear make up in high school. Now I usually only wear it if I am going somewhere special or have enough time in the morning before work. I don’t have a problem going places without it.
Makeup in high school? Where I come from, it was not allowed
I never knew what make up was till I joined college
These girls are so amazing. They are our bright future
I always think food tastes better at other people’s houses, but especially at my moms!
I love the “no makeup” idea. Amazing, I would not have had the courage to do that in high school. I am so inspired by these girls they give me hope for a future where anorexia and self hating fat talk don’t exist!
i hope for that future, too!
I only wore makeup a few times in high school. I think it had more to do with me not wanting to wake up earlier to put it on than a movement against makeup.
I think these girls took a great first step. I don’t necessarily think makeup is a bad thing – after all, I wear earrings and cute shoes to add to my outfit. I think the key is to know the difference between feeling beautiful with or without makeup, jewelry, etc. and feeling beautiful because of them.
You’re doing awesome things! Congratulations.
That is awesome!
I did wear makeup in high school. I wore as much as my group of friends did, which was a lot less than some girls did: mascara, eye shadow, face powder, and lip gloss were our things. Now, on an average day, I wear mascara, very light eyeliner, face powder, and lip balm. When I’m going out, I add eye shadow and maybe lip gloss or stain.
I really, really, really, REALLY wish that I went without makeup at least some of the time! Makeup is enjoyable, but I hate feeling dependent on it. It’s been easier since I moved away from my mom (for college and now post-college), because in high school (and middle school, before I ever wore it!) she always told me I “needed some makeup” and now she always tells me I need more. Rarely does a day go by at my parents house that my mom doesn’t try to put concealer, blush, and/or lipstick on me.
I want to try to break that pattern! Good job, everyone.
My mom does the same thing! I wish that she didn’t.
Oh and I wore makeup in high school, mainly becuase my skin was so bad. I wore it in college and still wear it everyday. But I usually only wear a full face of makeup when I have to go to work. I can skip it if it is the weekend. When I don’t wearr it, people tell me I look tired (at work). I hate that.
I like makeup, I feel like I look to plain without it. But it’s good to keep it very natural looking.
The only thing I wear is mascara, the rest just takes too long and I don’t really know how to use it anyway!
Hey, they are from my hometown! Very exciting. As far as makeup, I wore way more in high school than I do now. I always had a full face: foundation, concealer, powder, eyeliner, eyeshadow, mascara. Now I’m lucky to leave the house in mascara, concealer and powder.
I also feel like it’s worth mentioning that where those girls are from is a pretty rich part of the DFW metroplex. Growing up there, I can vouch that things are extremely “cliquey” and girls are often tan, bleach blond, have a ton of makeup on and wear designer clothes. Taking that into consideration, I think that makes what they’re doing even more noteworthy.
That’s even more awesome because its extremely hard to break status quo in high school!
I generally wear foundation, powder, and mascara every day. However, lately I’ve been skipping some of it.
I agree that food always tastes better when someone else makes it. I’ve never understood that one!
I have a sister who is 7 years older than me and I ALWAYS wanted to do what she did. Sadly my makeup wearing started way before high school just bc my sister did but my mom always would make sure it was “out of control”. I honestly dont think wearing makeup is a bad thing at all, its the reason behind why your wearing it that matter. I have no problem walking around with out makeup on during the day if im running errands, not working, etc. If “kids” start wearing it to impress others thats when it is an issue.
I’ve never worn make-up. I just never picked up the habit, and I am totally baffled by how to wear make-up when you have a face full of freckles (is it even possible?!).
I have recently fancied it up, though! I now sometimes wear tinted moisturizer, pink sparkling eyeshadow, and mascara. It’s fun!
I think that’s awesome. I wore make-up to high school everyday because I used to have terrible skin. Now I try not to wear it, unless I’m going somewhere where I want to look nice. But to the gym? Nah. To school? Maybe. To my internship? YES!
Great segment! I try to keep my makeup to a minimal, especially since I have a sister who is 11 and on the verge of puberty, the teenage years, and all the chaos that comes with it. I want to be the best role model I can be for her
I love that these girls are doing this. I take a lot of PRIDE in the fact that I rarely wear makeup, and when I do it’s minimal. I could probably count on one hand the amount of times I’ve worn foundation this year.
For me, I actually feel so much MORE insecure about wearing a lot of makeup because that’s just not me. Even when I’m wearing a pretty dress, I want to look like ME and when the makeup’s piled on, I just don’t feel like that.
PLUS, Kissing my hubby without worrying about smudges is SO worth it
xx
That’s a pretty incredible thing for such young girls to do. I think I went to school without makeup once. I’m much more comfortable now without makeup on, but back then, not a chance.
i didn’t really wear make up in HS. i think back in the old days kids wore less make up than today! once in a while in HS, i’d put on a dark red lipstick.
today i just do eyes make up – a black liner on eyelids almost everyday. on small occasions, i’d put on lip-gloss.
i actually rarely wear makeup. special occasions/going out only. sometimes i’ll use mascara or lip gloss, but i almost always have a bare face. i figure, i’m 22, my skin is clear, i love my freckles, so i might as well go without makeup until it’s absolutely necessary! haha
I’m not big on makeup, and I remember my Dad would always yell at my sister and I for wearing it. He hated it. And in the end I think his perspective helped me.
Those oats look fabulous. Love the strawberries and coconut
I wore a little make-up in junior high/high school but hardly ever wear it now.
I used to never wear make-up, but as I age I’ve been depending on under-eye concealer. It’s often the only make-up I wear because I’m lazy
As an artist, I truly wish more women went without or with minimal make up. I love appreciating each person’s unique beauty and bone structure (portraiture is my favorite!) and often make up is simply a camouflage. There are so many beautiful people in the world covering it up!
I love this! I make a point to not wear makeup at least once or twice a week. I feel like my skin wants to breathe and I need to work on feeling confident in my natural beauty. And another benefit: not having to scrub it off at night.
Props to these girls and you Caitlin for starting a revolution
I’m a sophomore in high school and I don’t wear makeup. I know a lot of girls who do, though. I used to wear a little last year, but I gave up because I’m not good at putting on makeup anyway…
I never wear make up these days. I never have time and it’s just easier. I used to wear it a lot though.
I actually just bought a little bit make-up but I honestly don’t think I’ll be using it alot. I’m more of a minimalist these days. LOL!
ps. whoa – your oats look amazing! Look at those coconut shavings!
I only wear makeup on special occasions/going out…Enjoy East TN; it’s where i grew up/went to high school :>
I used to wear makeup all the time in high school and I still wear makeup in college. However, as I am becoming more comfortable with myself, the amount of makeup I wear is diminishing. I am now not afraid to go run errands or go for a run without makeup (yes, I would wear makeup whenever I would play sports!)
What a great segment!
That coconut looks good!
I wore makeup in high school, but some days I didn’t. When I was a freshman in college, I didn’t wear makeup though. Now I’m back in a makeup phase
I used to believe that I was hideous without makeup. I was so self concious. Something happened recently where I’ve let go of that attitude… I now where minimal makeup to work and then on the weekends if I go out for something special, I do fancier makeup
I think it’s important to see yourself as beautiful in different looks.
That is so cool of them! I am going to read the article right now! I didn’t wear makeup in high school. My sorority changed that in college…but only for a year until I moved to another college…and stopped wearing make up for the most part. I only wear mascara unless it is a special occasion. I still specifically remember forgetting to put mascara on for my freshman year homecoming! I wanted to wear it sooo bad since I NEVER wore anything…and then I forgot! haha
These ladies are beautiful and never needed makeup to begin with. However, as a middle school teacher and a former teen (smile) I know the appeal of wearing makeup during the NOTICE ME years. It saddens me to see my students wearing a ton of makeup to fit in with the “it” girls. I make it a point to tell them how beautiful they are sans makeup in hopes that they won’t feel the need to pile it on. I’m in my 30s and the only item I wear daily is lipstick and that’s for the moisturizing effect. Makeup is wonderful but I reserve it for special occasions. Continued blessings on the impact your book is having on our youth.
I’ve always been a make-up girl, only because my skin seems to turn red at anything and everything, so the little bit of extra cover I get helps. I’m not really into the whole eyeshadow, lipstick, etc.; I pretty much use some concealer and a little powder and I’m good.
I actually knew nothing about makeup in high school, I didn’t really start wearing it regularly until community college.
Now I forgo it most days, except the days I work! I just like looking presentable at work. Especially since if I don’t wear it I get “you look tired” or “you look sad, are you ok?”
I hate it when people ask me if I’m tired when I’m not wearing makeup.
What a wonderful idea, and they all look amazing without their makeup! I never wore makeup in high school, but I don’t remember that being that outside of the norm back then. I may be idealizing things, but I see a lot of teenage girls now, and it seems like they are putting way more effort into themselves than when I was that age. (I was in high school 94-98. Dating myself here, jeez!) So, I feel like what they are saying about the standards getting more and more unattainable are true.
You must feel really touched to have been a key influence! That’s really amazing and a sign of how powerful your movement can be. It’s great to see these things not only as tools for building self-esteem, but as a way of building a community of girls supporting on another.
I am still pretty lazy about makeup as an adult. I don’t wear it to work, but I do wear it for special occasions. I think it should be fun to play with and not something to be a slave to!
Your dogs look so cute in the hats! And this is becoming the longest comment ever, so I’m shutting up now.
I was so young looking in high school that makeup would have looked really silly on me…I think I might have worn some mascara or bronzer occasionally but all my friends definitely did.
Now I am all about bare minerals and mascara for work. It is pretty rare for me to put on liner, eyeshadow, and lipstick but I will do it for parties or going out occasionally. Sometimes I do wear bronzer when looking pale since I don’t let myself get as tan anymore.
Happy Saturday! Just wanted to let you know that I saw your article in Breathe today
Fun to see you and Kath in the same magazine!
I didn’t really wear it in high school, but I do wear it every day now. Sometimes I don’t do it up as much, but I usually put at least a little bit on every morning.
I actually don’t wear makeup except special occasions (such as my wedding, prom, the Marine Corps Ball). I find it as a waste of time, money and I’d rather people love me for who I am rather then what I look like all dolled up.
I love this!
I never wore makeup until around senior year of college. I had a job interview and my friend insisted that I ought to wear makeup to look more professional, so we went out and she bought me makeup and taught me how to put it on. I still have the exact makeup she bought me…6 years later.
I don’t wear makeup daily, but I’ll sometimes throw on some eye makeup if I’m going out somewhere nice or have an important meeting that I want to look professional for.
I’ve never worn base or foundation…I have lots of freckles and think they look silly all covered up!
Honestly, I sometimes feel pretty without makeup, but I sometimes also feel really plain. This may or may not be the case in other places, but in Los Angeles, everyone seems so done up and put together all the time (aka covered in makeup and fashionable accessories).
Great job on inspiring our young women! Hopefully they will also take a stand on the tough battle of body image.
Love the blog!
I’m trying to wean myself off of makeup. I started wearing it young, mainly because I had skin issues starting in early middle school, but of course makeup makes those issues worse. I never enjoyed wearing it, I wasn’t one of those girls that was always buying new eye shadows and playing with makeup in front of the mirror, it was and has always been a burden. I never stopped because it got to the point where it felt like not wearing it was akin to going out of the house without a shirt on. I’m getting better, I stopped wearing all eye makeup except some brown mascara after a series of eye infections due to too much makeup. I’ve found that eating a healthy diet has really cleared up my skin, so it’s getting easier to wear less and less. Thanks for this inspiring story!
love this segment! you are awesome. quick question – making your santa fe casserole today for football watching – how many does your recipe serve? thinking i might need to double it….?
5 – 6 servings
probably less for boys
I only wear makeup to work. I don’t wear it on weekends at all. Once upon a time, the man I fell in love with told me that he preferred me without it. So, I listened
I loved that video it was so inspiring!
I am in highschool and yes I wear makeup everyday. I have not before and i got the “are you okay, are you sick comments?
I need to do it, maybe once a week to start and show girls they don;’t have to wear makeup! that would be so awesome!
I love the quote
“redefining beautiful once girl at a time”
I loved the segment on the 4th hour of the Today Show a few months ago where Kathie Lee and Hoda didn’t wear makeup (along with show guests and show staff). I thought that was outstanding, espec for middle-aged women (I’m one) who have been wearing makeup for years. I wore mostly mascara in high school. I try to wear less as I age, and I can go without everything except for filling in my brows which unfortunately get a little sparse w/ age. I noticed how much eye makeup my 13 yo niece wears. Way too much for a naturally beautiful young teenager.
I went to an all-girls’ high school, and one of the best things about it was the fact that NO ONE wore makeup. When I got to college, that experience made me so much more comfortable in my own skin!! Though I like wearing makeup, it’s definitely not a necessity for me, and when I do wear it it’s always to play up my favorite feature- my eyes!
I never wear make-up. My husband perfers me without it, it makes my skin break out, I don’t really care to wear it or take the time to put it on everyday. I hope to pass this on to my daughters.
Didn’t then and pretty much don’t now unless I’m going out or an interview!
I wen t to an all girls school so I did not wear makeup, but now I wear it evryday.
what an amazing group of girls!
I wore more make up in highschool than I do now! I was really just trying to fit in I suppose.
Now, I see, that I dont need that much to be pretty
I went to a high school that no one wore make-up. Now I rarely wear makeup, most of time i only cover my face with moisturizer cream, but if I have business meeting or party to attend, I will cover my eye circles.
I feel more beautiful without make up. My skin feels fresh and clean and I just love the natural look. I do, however, love to use make up to express myself, and am known to wear pretty funky eye make up regularly. I definitely think it is important though to send out the message that make up does not make you beautiful, what makes you beautiful is showing the face that God blessed you with and sharing your natural beauty with the world. I think make up should be treated as an “accessory” like a fun scarf or a piece of jewelry, and should not be relied on to change your appearance or make you feel more comfortable in your skin. It’s all about being thankful for what you have and loving the skin you are in. Everyone is beautiful in their own, unique ways and wearing too much make up hides those unique qualities and just makes you look similar to everyone else.
I only wore makeup in high school for special occasions. I went to an all girls high school, and pretty much everyone just rolled out of bed and went to school. Now, I wear makeup on weekends sometimes, and maybe a couple days of the week when I feel like it. But for me, makeup consists of mascara and light eyeshadow. I have always liked how I look without makeup! I think it’s because I always felt like makeup was really obvious on me. I’m glad to hear Operation Beautiful is inspiring girls !
I love this segment…thanks so much for sharing!
I’m definitely a fan of no makeup days at least once or twice a week, but I’ve got to say that usually those are days when I’m home. Thanks for the inspiration!
I LOVE this! I wore makeup in high school, but not much. A little powder, mascara, gloss. Not much has changed…although I gotta have my under eye concealer these days!
I’m actually still IN high school and I never wear makeup. Although in New Zealand it’s not really a big deal, the majority of females usually don’t wear makeup all the time anyway.
I tried it out a couple of years ago but I was simply too lazy to be bothered going through the whole ritual every morning, and the straw that broke the camels back was that I rub my eyes a lot and forget that I’m wearing makeup so it smudges and gets in my eyes.
So not worth it! I’m a bit of a tomboy anyway and just feel better without it… More natural I guess.
I only wear makeup when I’m going out at night…somewhere nice to dinner, or a club. But I’m really a minimalist when it comes to makeup.
In high school, I wouldn’t enter the doors without makeup. If I had to, I did it on the bus on the way (which happened a lot since I never wanted to wake up!) However once I went to college, sleep once again was the priority and I ended up skimping on the makeup most of the time. It’s no big deal now!
I did not wear makeup in school and I don’t wear it everyday. 99% of the time I am bare faced.
Great segment! I only wear mascara and maybe a little bit of eyeliner. I don’t like wearing too much makeup and have never worn concealer or foundation. I also don’t wear makeup on the weekends.
Never a bit of makeup! I thought I should for my wedding and my now-husband wasn’t a fan either – and I barely had anything on anyway!
awesome post.
I could care less what people think. Beauty comes from within first.
Never was in to make-up and I still am not. Only when book a modeling job or t is a must have. It is funny though, when I wear it, I get the “Wow, you look so pretty today” comment. Hmmm so your tellin me I look not-so pretty on the majority of the other days!
I wear make up every day and I have since high school. I am very uncomfortable without it because my skin is just uneven and blotchy. I don’t wear tons, but enough to feel human. I’m not entirely sure I could live without mascara.
What, what incredible young women! Very inspiring
Excellent movement!
I actually began and finished wearing makeup in middle school. It just wasn’t my thing, and so I have only worn since then when there’s an occasion – a wedding or other special event, or if I have a job interview. But I never wear it on a daily basis.
I wear makeup almost every day but make a point to not cake it on. I see it as adding to what I already like more so than covering something I don’t. High school I did wear it but it was more so for me – being artistic it was a means of expression rather than trying to impress others.
I’ve been wearing makeup since junior high! But it was a gradual process. I don’t think I was allowed to wear foundation until 8th grade. Now, I don’t always wear makeup, especially if I’m just running to the store. I try to make it very subtle though unless it’s night time.
i started wearing makeup in jr. high. i’ve been going w/o makeup more often too and i’m surprised how quickly i’m adjusting to it! my husband NEVER cares, like if i ask him “should i put on some makeup to go to the movies?” he always says “nope”. i come from a background where my mom calls it “fixing your face”. as in, “aren’t you going to FIX YOUR FACE today?” isn’t that awful? i’m giggling tho; b/c i’m over it! YAY! now i look forward to the days i don’t wear it and wonder if i will ever go to work w/o any? we shall see…thanks for sharing!
fixing your face is totally a 50+ years old generation thing. my mom says it too.
isn’t “fixing your face” something awful to say though, even for what it does subconsciously? i love that i’m so comfortable going w/o makeup now; and find that i used to sort of try to “hide” while out w/o makeup, but now….i notice if i just turn on my million dollar smile, folks react just as well to that whether i’m “made up” or not! it’s pretty liberating!
It’s so refreshing to hear that high school girls are trying to redefine beauty at that age. And it’s impressive that the boys are supporting it!
I didn’t wear much makeup in high school. I wore a little, but it may have been senior year that it became an everyday thing. I didn’t wear much though. Even now I still don’t wear much – foundation, blush, and mascara. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to spend more than a couple minutes on makeup, and I don’t know if I’ll ever be comfortable going to work without at least some foundation on.
I did wear makeup in high school. I wear it most days now to go to work, but don’t have a problem going makeup less either. The weekends are usually just moisturizer w/ spf days unless we’re heading out for a nice dinner or a party. Makeup is a fun thing for me and sometimes helps hide the tired eyes in the am.
I caught that during my lunch tv break the other day. That highschool is in my old stompin’ ground in Texas. I went to the other neighboring high school!
That’s so cool!
Nope, no makeup for me. When I was little and my sister and I would play dress-up, maybe, but not anymore. I’m a sophomore in college and have only worn makeup once that I can remember, and someone else did it for me! I wasn’t thrilled about it, but I let her do it anyway. =\

Honestly, I don’t know how to do makeup, and I’d much rather go natural. Too much time, too much money… I work in a drug store, so I know how much people pay for stuff, and I don’t want to spend that much money on myself unless it’s something I NEED, like clothing. Haha.
Basically, the most “made-up” I go is pulling my hair back.
I don’t get the eyeliner/mascara thing. I think eyelashes look better without all that extra gunk, and it’s weird to see so much color when people close their eyes or blink… =\
Oh, and by the way, I didn’t get a picture of it, but on a college visit with my sister today, I saw “Love your body week” written in chalk on the campus sidewalks. It was cool.
I wore make-up in high school. But looking back on it: I’m really proud to say that I liked going with out it. Make-up didn’t change how I felt about myself. Even today, my collection of loot would make my teenage self drool and pant, I don’t wear it everyday. Maybe 3 or 4 days a week I put something on. I really like tinted moisturizer : )
Great job being so inspiring!
I did not wear makeup in high school… but I went to an all girl school, so I’m not sure if it counts! I don’t wear makeup every day now… rarely on the weekends. I work at a youth center, so I don’t really feel the pressure to wear it, unless I have meetings with other adults
I DID wear it every day in my past life in the corporate world.
I’m a senior in HS now and I wear makeup every day, but never very much. Mascara, a bit of eyeliner (no raccoon eyes lol) and maybe some white shadow, that’s it. Some girls at my school wear too much bronzer, eyeliner, etc. and I feel bad cuz I wish they knew they looked fine without it!
What a beautiful movement!
No, I never wear makeup. I love effortless, natural beauty.
In high school, I was waking up 1 hour earlier to have time for my shower and makeup! And I was in a girls-only school.
.
I gradually stopped by putting on less everyday and now I don’t wear it if I don’t have time
So cool that you inspired those girls!
I’ve never been a huge make up person, mostly because I never learned how to apply it properly.
On most days I just wear mascara and some lip chap or gloss.
I actually didn’t start wearing makeup until I was in my mid-twenties. I mostly just wear eye shadow and mascara on a daily basis. Although, if I’m just having a bumming around day, I wont wear any.
Love the princess hats! James makes a very nice princess
i never wear makeup–i find it so annoying to take off! sometimes, when my roommates and i are all going out and i’m the only one without makeup, i feel self-conscious, but not often. and luckily, i have a boyfriend who tells me that i’m always pretty, but i’m prettiest when i don’t wear makeup
A few years ago, I refused to let anyone see me without mascara on – including my boyfriend. I would sleep with it on and in the morning I would take off the old and apply a fresh coat. I have since realized how silly this is and while I still wear mascara the majority of the time, I’m not afraid to run to the store or walk around my house without it. Incidentally, I loosened up when I started running and respecting my body for what it can do, not just what it looks like.
I’m glad to say I’m 17 ( a high school senior) and have never worn makeup. I feel no need to alter myself to please others. Plus I have saved sooooo much cash over the years!
I didn’t wear makeup in high school — all girls school! This made me far more comfortable being natural in college, but I did start to wear make up regularly there.
Now I wear it daily to work, but am trying to cut back. My most recent change was to stop wearing eyeliner during the day…it’s so much lighter and fresh-faced!
I never wore makeup in high school and just started wearing it my last two years of college (but only when I went to the bar and wanted to look done up).
Now that I have a job as a waitress, though, I wear it every day to work. As stupid and shallow as it seems, it really does make my tips better if I make sure that my makeup is done, my hair is nice, and my nails are painted. Sad, but the way it is.
Those girls are amazing, what an awesome story!
In high school, I used to wear make-up every single day. Even for swim practice/races (water-proof)!!! BUt when I started college, I just realized it wasn’t time worthy or worth the money, except when I go out on weekend nights, but no, not during the school week or at work! No one treated me differently. I even met my boyfriend of 4 years with no make-up on! I’m really proud of these ladies who put up a campaign at their high school. I’d join the campaign!
I rarely wear makeup. I usually view it as an extra ten minutes of sleep and sleep ALWAYS wins.
I don’t usually think much of it, until I do wear makeup and so many people comment on it. The constant compliments can actually make me feel insecure about what I look like most days. I love playing with makeup and dressing up – but if I’m not aware I can actually feel worse about myself on those days than on my normal natural days.
Those girls are BEAUTIFUL! No makeup needed.
I tend to wear makeup less in the summer, but I think I’m going to forego makeup tomorrow because of this!
I recently stopped wearing a lot of make up. A little mascara is all I need! I used to use make up as a shield, it was my wall against insecurities. Now I’m confident enough not to use it!
I wore makeup daily in high school, but quit in the middle of college. I got a lot of “are you tired?” at first, but people adjusted quickly, and now I only wear it for weddings and other special occasions.
I wore make-up occasionally in high school, and increasingly more after I graduated and started working in a professional environment. My Mom always told me that when you wear make-up everyday you start increasing the amount of make-up on your face, and this totally happened to me! One day I realized that I was putting on concealer, foundation, powder, eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara & lipstick just to be ‘presentable’ in my day-to-day life. I didn’t like it, I wanted to be me, I wanted make-up to enhance not mask me. So I gradually started wearing less and less make-up,and now a couple years later, you’re lucky if I put on tinted moisturizer….even without all the make-up I feel prettier than ever!
I wear makeup and dry and straighten my hair Monday through Friday for work, but come weekend, I avoid it all. My husband not only tolerates it, but prefers it.
After living in an Alaskan village for a summer and wearing rubber boots or waders and fleece, I am definitely comfortable in my own skin and letting the real me shine through.
I wore make-up from 7th grade on and still wear it every day. I honestly feel more put-together when wearing it.
“Nina says she enjoys the extra 30 minutes of sleep on Tuesdays”.
If it takes 30 minutes to put on your make-up then you’re probably wearing too much to begin with. I takes me 5 minutes tops.
I thought the same thing!!!
Right! Five minutes for a Saturday night on the town – 2 minutes during the work week
I wore a tiny amount of makeup in high school – just a tiny bit of shadow when I was in grade 10, then a bit of concealer + eyeliner in grade 12.
I don’t wear a lot of makeup day-to-day now – in fact, sometimes I’m lazy and don’t wear any to work at all (I probably shouldn’t do this). I think I look better with a little bit of makeup – but worse with a lot!
I can probably count on my hands the number of times I have worn makeup, with the most recent being my sister’s wedding in November 2008. My mother was very much against the use of makeup, and none of my friends used in in High School, so I never learned to apply it myself. If anything, I was under pressure NOT to use makeup growing up.
I sometimes feel self-conscious that I don’t know enough about makeup to wear even just on special occasions, and it can be a little hard being the only girl without makeup in such an appearance-based society as Tokyo, but I’ve gone so long without it that it seems strange to start now!
Amusingly, I am blessed to have been born with nice eyes, and have been accused of lying (once by my best friend’s mother!) when I claimed not to wear eye makeup before.
I wore makeup everyday in high school, and I still wear it everyday.
I don’t think wearing make up makes you unhappy with your natural self. It never even occurred to me that people would think that. There is nothing wrong with wanting to look your best and make up isn’t faking it.
I used to wear way too much make up in high school because I was super self conscience. Now I just wear it on special ocassions like weddings. I am lucky enough to have people in my life that judge me for me and not the way my face looks.
I used to wear a lot more makeup (but never a whole lot, a just didn’t like the way it feels!) in high school. I now wear hardly any–and what I do–is all organic. I just wear a little so I don’t look so pale (a tiny bit of blush-not very noticeable-and eyeshadow) and some powder stuff so I’m not shiny, and yellow stuff under my eyes for my allergy circles. That’s it! I do not like lipstick. I wear Neosporin Lip Balm. It’s a little shiny and makes my lips happy.
I have never been into make up. I would like to at times but for the most part I forget or am to lazy to hassle with it, so I guess in the end I am not motivated enough to wear it.

Awesome! I’m so proud of these girls. Other reasons to stop wearing makeup:
1. Most products are made with petroleum (oil)
2. Many products are tested on cats
