A Morning Drive

in All Posts

Sorry for the delay; I woke up and decided to drive to visit my Grandpa.  It was two hours away, and we only got to visit for 45 minutes or so, but it was well worth it.

Before I left:  Greek yogurt, cereal, fruit, and almonds:

IMG_3037

And on the way back, I stopped at a grocery store and got a bucket of fruit for a snack.  Grocery stores are really the best place to grab a healthy snack when you’re on the go.  Much better than a fast food place or a gas station!

Home back to my in-laws’ and made the second part of lunch:

Slices of toast with hummus and pumpkin seeds:

And some greens and veg:

Side note: I am so ridiculously sore from gardening – my arms hurt like I spent the afternoon lifting heavy weights!

And I miss yoga… a lot.  Perhaps it’s time for an at-home session?  Any recommendations on downloadable programs?

    Well, I sadly don’t have any yoga recommendations but I just wanted to say how awesome it must have been to see your Grandpa. I love spontaneous, yet SO necessary trips like that. 🙂

  • Beth @ Beth's Journey to Thin September 29, 2010, 1:06 pm

    So nice that you drove to see your grandpa if only for a little while! Do they have OnDemand on comcast? I find there are lots of good yoga programs under ExerciseTV and it depends what you’re looking for exactly. It won’t be quite as good as hot yoga but its a nice backup!

  • Michelle September 29, 2010, 1:06 pm

    yogatoday.com is great and they have a free class each week that you can download.

  • Holly @ couchpotatoathlete September 29, 2010, 1:08 pm

    No idea about yoga, although I use Exercise TV on demand stuff for regular workouts — and I’m sure they have yoga ones. (ok now I see that Beth has already suggested that)

    How wonderful to see your Grandpa and spend time with him. Even if it was only for 45 minutes I’m sure he enjoyed it!

  • Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine September 29, 2010, 1:08 pm

    I’m not a big yoga person, but I love yogadownload.com’s Yoga for Runners because it stretches out your legs so well! That drive sounds well worth it- I love seeing my grandparents 🙂

  • Lizz (leadingthegoodlife) September 29, 2010, 1:09 pm

    I love that you went to visit your Grandpa! And thanks, it prompted me to send a card to my Grandma. Don’t take the people you love for granted!

  • Ameena September 29, 2010, 1:09 pm

    I love yogadownload.com’s Yoga for Runners…I highly recommend it to stretch out muscles and feel totally relaxed in the process.

  • Amanda September 29, 2010, 1:09 pm

    Gardening is a true full body workout. Once spring hits and it is time for the gardens to go in, I know that my strength training will kick up a notch….or 10 🙂

  • grocery goddess jen September 29, 2010, 1:10 pm

    That is so sweet that you went to see your grandpa – I only have one grandparent left and I’m going to see her in a couple of weeks (she lives about 600 miles away). I’m glad you took the time to do it!

  • kalin September 29, 2010, 1:11 pm

    if there’s cable i really like exercise tv ondemand (it’s on comcast i think?)

  • Freya September 29, 2010, 1:11 pm

    You’ve probably heard all about yogadownload by now right…? I hear that’s good 🙂
    The hummus/toast/pumpkin seed thing looks so lovely 🙂

  • Lauren at KeepItSweet September 29, 2010, 1:11 pm

    i highly recommend the downloads on the yoga to the people website- they are great yoga sessions, and free!

  • Kristina @ spabettie September 29, 2010, 1:11 pm

    that is great that you got to see your grandpa… I miss mine terribly, and I was always able to spend lots of time with him… so when I see others taking time to spend with grandparents it always makes me SO happy!

    I’m sure you made his day, and he yours. 😀

  • Estela @ Weekly Bite September 29, 2010, 1:12 pm

    Thats so great that you took the time to visit your grandpa!

    I wish I had a yoga recommendation for you. I have a hard time doing dvd’s… so I always go to the studio.

  • Dori September 29, 2010, 1:13 pm

    Yogavibes.com! You get a free class in September only with the promo code FBFREE. I recommend Erin Jacques’ Music Yoga Flow, although there is a another Music Yoga Flow on a rooftop as well.

  • Kim September 29, 2010, 1:13 pm

    Sadie Nardini has some fantastic free yoga stuff online. She’s got an entire YouTube channel! I’m excited because she’s one of the featured instructors at a Yoga Festival I’m attending in November!

    • Kim September 29, 2010, 1:14 pm

      A URL would be helpful, huh?
      http://www.sadienardini.com/

      Also, I’m with Estela…I have a hard time doing stuff at home. Cats standing under me during downward facing dog, etc. I prefer a studio. 🙂

  • Sarena (The Non Dairy Queen) September 29, 2010, 1:14 pm

    I completely agree on the grocery store for quick healthy snacks when you are on the road! So glad you got to see your grandpa. That must have been nice. I like exercisetv.com for workouts especially yoga. I would say an Epsom salt bath would help too. That was a lot on your muscles yesterday!

  • tina September 29, 2010, 1:17 pm

    http://www.yogadownload.com// !!!

    they have free 20 minute ones- i’ll sometimes just do like 3 20 minute ones and call it a day! they also have an iphone app!

    i’ve never done yoga on comcast on demand but i’ve done other workout videos- also an option! 🙂

    namaste.

    • Jaime Runs September 29, 2010, 5:51 pm

      I second the YogaDownload.com podcasts!

  • Kelsey September 29, 2010, 1:18 pm

    You don’t seem yourself 🙁 I’m sending happy thoughts your way. Hope your stressful week gets better soon.

    • Caitlin September 29, 2010, 1:22 pm

      i don’t feel like myself. bah.

      thanks girlie.

  • Kathryn September 29, 2010, 1:18 pm

    I use yogadownload.com and dave farmer’s podcasts on itunes! both are wonderful!

  • Kathryn September 29, 2010, 1:19 pm

    I used to take Peggy’s class all the time till she moved. She’s got a class recording posted online… http://web.me.com/pegmulqueen/Site/Podcast/Entries/2010/6/25_visit_http___www.pegmulqueen.com.html

  • brandi September 29, 2010, 1:22 pm

    how fun to get that 45 minutes in with your grandpa 🙂 I wouldn’t give up family time for anything, so we take a lot of road trips every year.

    Polly (Yoga is Yummy) has some great videos on youtube/her blog. She’s such a sweetie!

  • Kara M. September 29, 2010, 1:23 pm

    I’ve never used yogadownload.com, but Polly’s got some decent videos on her blog over at yogaisyummy.net…

  • Angela September 29, 2010, 1:31 pm

    YogaVibes.com has some great options. I saw a free coupon floating about, if you google it you should be able to find it easy enough.

    Glad you got to visit it your Grandpa, its always nice to visit family even if it is just a short visit.

  • Faith @ lovelyascharged September 29, 2010, 1:32 pm

    I’m all about the grocery stores! I’ll usually just grab one or two pieces of fruit from the bins and call it a day. You’re right – it’s SO much better than a fast food pit stop!

  • lena @loveeatnowafter September 29, 2010, 1:32 pm

    I’m sure someones already mentioned it but yogadownload.com is really.amazing I love that u can try every lesson for free with a twenty minute sample I particularly like yoga for buns lol it gets my cardio going!!

    I really love the road pic at the beginning of the post!

  • Camels & Chocolate September 29, 2010, 1:33 pm

    Man, you should really be a nutritionist or consultant or something. I’m not overly healthy, but every time I read your blog, it makes me want to eat whatever you’re eating at that very moment!

  • Tracey @ I'm Not Superhuman September 29, 2010, 1:36 pm

    Sorry life’s still out of sorts for you. 🙁

    I like yogadownload.com. There are a ton of options on there.

  • Stacey September 29, 2010, 1:37 pm

    Yes! If you have instant Netflix there is a yoga DVD that I do by Baron Baptiste..and it’s called Power Yoga Long and Lean or something like that. It’s a really good one, it makes me sweat and he does all of the basic vinyasa moves..though he is a little corny lol

  • Charise September 29, 2010, 1:40 pm

    I’m a beginner (only been doing yoga for 6-8 weeks), but I like yogadownload.com as well.

    Hope things calm down soon – it’s no good being out of sorts from your usual self! Sending good thoughts your way, Caitlin.

  • yummiee cupcake September 29, 2010, 1:43 pm

  • Jasmine @ Eat Move Write September 29, 2010, 1:44 pm

    Wow. Good to know gardening is a great strength training workout! Good idea to visit your grandpa. I would have done the same. I miss my grandparents so terribly.

  • Sana September 29, 2010, 1:46 pm

    I am so happy that you are blogging despite being away from home and not feeling normal!
    Take care <3

  • Erin September 29, 2010, 1:52 pm

    You can download free podcasts from Dave Farmar on itunes. He is a great vinyasa instructor.

  • Baby Blue September 29, 2010, 1:55 pm

    Yoga Today! Their free class this week is absolutely fabulous! It is level Guru, but they have modifications if you are not at that level (i’m not 🙂 You’ll have to create a free account, but it is well-worth it- a free hour long class every week! Really good teachers. Cannot stress it enough!
    http://yogatoday.com/

    • Nicole September 29, 2010, 1:58 pm

      I recommend them too!

    • elaine! September 29, 2010, 2:47 pm

      You can find a bunch of free Yoga Today videos on iTunes in the podcast section, also!

  • Kjirsten @ Balanced Healthy Life September 29, 2010, 2:09 pm

    yogadownload.com

    Your lunch looks so good. I like the idea of pumpkin seeds on the toast! Yummy!

  • ashleigh September 29, 2010, 2:11 pm

    Looks like a dreary day over there! I’d like to get into yoga a little… let us know which one you choose!

  • Kath September 29, 2010, 2:12 pm

    Dave Farmar is one of the closest yoga “classes” I have ever taken to Tanner!

    • Marci September 29, 2010, 2:13 pm

      Dave Farmar is great! And he is in Denver and his podcasts talk about skiing and snow and mountains, so it’s fun to listen in the heat of Houston. Download from iTunes.

  • Marina September 29, 2010, 2:17 pm

    It’s so nice that you visited your grandpa.
    I highly recommend Sadie Nardini’s videos on youtube.She’s really awesome

  • Amber K September 29, 2010, 2:26 pm

    I see many people have given you some yoga suggestions. I hope you get some time to use them! Still praying and sending good thoughts your way. 🙂

  • Leanne @ Radiant, Balanced & Fit September 29, 2010, 2:37 pm

    go on YouTube & find yoga for runners! Theres tons of amazing videos!

  • Katherine @ Left Coast Contessa September 29, 2010, 2:42 pm

    David Farmer (Fisher?) at yoga downloaded is supposed to be great!

  • Brittany (A Healthy Slice of Life) September 29, 2010, 2:48 pm

    Possibly check out yogavibes.com ?

  • elyssa September 29, 2010, 2:51 pm

    i have a hard time doing yoga at home unless it’s with a dvd. i really like shiva rea’s stuff. she’s got a different approach (more more flexible and movementy) than i was used to – but it’s perfect for doing at home when no one is watching 🙂

  • Stacey (The Habit of Healthy) September 29, 2010, 3:02 pm

    I hope everything’s ok, you seem down. 🙁

    Anyway, I agree with grocery stores being the best option for healthy eating on the go!

  • Virginia September 29, 2010, 3:10 pm

    Yogavibes.com is amazing! They film real classes so you feel like you are right in the studio with everyone else.

    There is something for everyone and for only $10 per class (with unlimited viewing for 14 days) it’s a great deal!

  • Ellen@FirednFabulous September 29, 2010, 3:14 pm

    Ohh your lunch looks so good! I’m always looking for new ways to eat hummus…I slather it on everything!

  • Stacy @ Student of Healthy Living September 29, 2010, 3:14 pm

    Today it seems you don’t need a witty comment but rather positive vibes.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~positive vibes sent.
    Oh, and a virtual hug too!
    There you go 🙂
  • Ellen@FirednFabulous September 29, 2010, 3:15 pm
    Ohh and maybe you should look into making a HTP Weed Whacking Arm Sculpting DVD. I’d buy it! tehe 🙂
  • Emily September 29, 2010, 3:24 pm
    Glad you got to see your grandfather, grandparents are such a gift 🙂 As for the yoga, http://www.yogaisyummy.net/ has a few free videos, there’s yogadownload and if your family in FL has comcast cable there’s workouts on demand that are awesome. Good luck!
  • Kelly September 29, 2010, 3:26 pm
    Why don’t you do your old faithful Yoga Sculpt haha?
    You are so awesome for driving 2 hours to visit your grandpa for 45 minutes. I need to go visit my grandma who lives in the town I work in!
  • Sarah (A Runner's Heart) September 29, 2010, 3:48 pm
    I wanted to let you know that, of all sites, Hulu.com has yoga for free! 🙂 I just happened to come upon it one day. It has everything from 10 min. sessions to an hour! 🙂 So you might want to check that out also! 🙂 Looks like you have plenty of suggestions to choose from! lol 🙂
  • Nicole - yuppie yogini September 29, 2010, 3:49 pm
    Come to my house and we can do yogadownload…they’re ok, but I bought a bunch.
  • Cathy K September 29, 2010, 4:11 pm
    i bet the time in the car, alone, was helpful for you today, too…hoping you feel more like yourself really soon. all the best to you and to your family.
  • Bb September 29, 2010, 4:13 pm
    No idea about yoga, but u r so sweet that you went to see ur grandpa! Sounds gardening is really a whole body workout.
  • Jamie @ Food in Real Life September 29, 2010, 4:22 pm
    I almost bought pumpkin seeds today but I wasn’t sure if I buy the raw ones? Pepitas or something? I might just have to make my own. As for yoga at home, I usually do the “on demand” workouts. They are free (from Exercise TV) and usually I can find one that I like.
  • Ashley K September 29, 2010, 4:28 pm
    Yogadownload.com for me as well! I bought a year long membership awhile back and go a sweet deal on it. You can download as many classes as you want for a full year, and you get to keep the MP3s forever!
    Sending happy thoughts your way! 🙂
  • Megan (Braise The Roof) September 29, 2010, 4:36 pm
    Pumpkin seeds on toast? Genius! Why have I never thought to do that? 🙂
  • Charlie September 29, 2010, 4:41 pm
    There are yoga programs on Women’s Health Magazine website.
  • Karen September 29, 2010, 4:44 pm
    I know you’ve gotten lots of recommendations already, but I love Yoga Journal’s website. Not only is it a great source of info, but they also have tons of downloads. It’s just http://www.yogajournal.com
    It’s funny not to know a person in “real life”, face-to-face, and still be able to tell that you aren’t feeling like yourself. It shows how sincere you are in your writing.
    I hope things improve with your family very quickly and get back to normal for everyone!
    • Caitlin September 29, 2010, 7:03 pm
      Thanks Karen – that means a lot to me 🙂
      • eatmovelove September 29, 2010, 7:31 pm
        I agree with this. Your kind of like the sweet girl next door…;)
        Yoga? Nix all the others – check out Yogadownload.com. There are short 20 minute ones there. I haven’t done it in foreverrrrrr – but I remember the Core, Vinyasa, and “Detox” flows were good.
        Peace.
        • eatmovelove September 29, 2010, 7:32 pm
          Oh – and there are longer sessions as well – 45, 60, 90 minutes…i just never did those LOL 😉
  • Maren September 29, 2010, 4:46 pm
    Those pumpkin seeds look deeeelish! We have OnDemand on our cable tv and there is an exercise TV program that has tons of Yoga sessions! the best part? They’re FREE!
  • Heather September 29, 2010, 4:46 pm
    This is what I do for a quick yoga session (I have taken a yoga teacher training course) that you can tailor to your ability and doesn’t require a CD/internet class.
    1. Start with a short meditation
    2. Breathing exercise of your choice
    3. Side bends and a gentle twist
    4. Warm up with a sun salutation
    5. Choose 3-4 of your favourite standing balancing postures(that you know you can do safely and correctly, holding for 30-60 seconds) and after each posture do one sun salutation.
    6. Choose 3-4 seated postures and do them at your own pace (holding for 30-60 seconds)
    7. Final sun salutation
    8. Savasana/corpse pose
    • Caitlin September 29, 2010, 7:03 pm
      Nice. Going to go this now.
  • Samantha September 29, 2010, 5:20 pm
    You should email Polly, she can suggest a good flow sequence you can do to your own music. She helped me out with that before when I needed a pre bed flow. I do downloads on occasion but much prefer to put on a great playlist and just flow on my own.
    iTunes also has a few yoga apps that let you string together your own flows.
    Hope things take a turn for the better soon!
  • Jenny @ The Healthy Teenager, green tea and yoga, not alcohol and parties September 29, 2010, 5:28 pm
    The best at-home yoga i’ve ever done was from a $7(NZ$) DVD I bought from the local department store.
    It’s called LoveYoga and it’s fantastic!! I’ve never enjoyed a workout DVD until this one.
    Also those berries look mighty fine. Do they cost a lot in the US? In NZ it would cost a FORTUNE for that tub :/
  • Lindsey September 29, 2010, 6:26 pm
    I agree with the above posts on Dave Farmar! They are great as long as you know most of the terminology because it’s audio only. I had to ask one of my in class instructors what “flip the dog” meant haha : )
  • Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin September 29, 2010, 7:49 pm
    Long drives are always worth it when their purpose is to visit people we love!
  • Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) September 29, 2010, 7:51 pm
    Weeding is such a good arm exercise. Between that and washing cars, who needs the gym? 😉
    I agree. Supermarkets are great for cheap, delicious food on the go. You can’t go wrong with a big ol’ bucket of berries. 😀
  • Heather September 29, 2010, 8:11 pm
    I love buckets of grocery store fruit. we keep some in our fridge all the time.
  • Camille September 29, 2010, 8:51 pm
    What a great granddaughter you are!
    And that toast looks super 🙂
