Welcome to Chi-Town

in Healthy Living Summit 2010

After 7+ hours of traveling, Megan and I finally arrived in Chicago around 6 PM last night.  I was so excited to check out the city – I’ve never been here and it’s gorgeous.

Let’s go back in time a bit…

Our flights involved one delay after the other.  Luckily, we had Internet and magazines to keep us busy.  I snacked on an apple, crackers, and a fruit leather as well.

Chicago has great public transportation.  We took the train from the airport to a stop about 0.5 mile from our hotel and dragged our very heavy suitcases around.

Once we got settled in, we hooked up with fellow blends Julie and Chandra and decided to just lay low and see the city for a bit.    First, I asked them to help me finish stuffing the swag bags – the other members of the planning member did the bulk of the work earlier but I had one more thing to slip in.

IMG_0052

The swag is pretty great this year!  The bags don’t close!

Then, we walked to Gino’s for their famous deep-dish pizza.  The 1.0 mile walk to the restaurant was a great way to see the city, and the mile back was a nice way to get the heavy pizza to settle in my stomach.  :)

At Gino’s, I had a glass of red wine:

And about 2/3 slice of a Vegetarian pizza and 1/2 of a cheese and spinach.  They were HUGE pieces, but really great.  The crusty was similar to pie crust – super buttahy and flaky.  Two thumbs up.

After a great night’s sleep, I’m meeting friends (old and new) in the lobby for a run, and then it’s a full day of conference activities.

Have you been to Chicago?  What’s your favorite city architecturally?

I’ve never been to Chicago- but I hear it is really beautiful. I’m in New York City this weekend and am excited to explore some of the architecture here but I have a feeling that once I see Chicago, it will be my favourite.

I hope everything goes well at the summit!

Yes, I’ve been to Chicago. And Gino’s is delicious! yum!

I love NYC architecturally . There is just so much old and so much new combined together, perfectly. LOVE that city!

The pizza in Chicago is so filling though. Me and 3 friends split a small (which is only 4 pieces!)

I lived in Chicago for about 9 months. I absolutely love it. It is so clean and friendly. Plus, you can’t beat the deep dish. I keep trying to convince Matt to move there, but he’s not so sure on the weather.

I have never been to Chicago – I would love to go one day, though! A friend of a friend lives there and is always raving about how fantastic it is.

My favorite city, architecturally and for its culture and food, is New Orleans. Once you sober up, there’s plenty of fantastic food and entertainment to enjoy, and then you get plastered again, and then once you sober up from that there’s shopping and breathtaking buildings. I’m convinced it’s my soul city. :-)

I’ve been to Chicago once. I was there for a school conference and maybe had two hours to look around the city one morning. I loved what I saw though. I loved the relfective bean. :) I really want to go back one day since my Stepdad is from there. So, uh, make sure you eat at a lot of awesome places and report back so I can save your posts for my next trip.

Have fun at HLS!!

Chicago is amazing! You probably won’t have time, but I highly recommend the Museum of Science and Industry. It’s really cool!!

Last night I was reading the recent issue of Glamour magazine when all of a sudden there is a page about Operation Beautiful. I exclaimed “Oh my goodness!” and my husband looked at me like I was strange. I’ve been following your blog for a year now and I was so excited for you to be featured in the magazine. Congratulations!

Reply

Courtney August 13, 2010 at 1:33 pm

Science and Industry is really cool, I agree! They have an entire new section about the human body, which features some gross plastified bodies :/, but also neat interactive exhibits, like one that measures your pulse while standing and while exercising. I also recommend the Shedd Aquarium if you have time :)

Looking forward to hearing more about the Summit. I was in Chicago a year and a half ago, after a flight delay. Rather than waiting in the airport, we made the most of it by going into the cityf for the day.

Architecturally, Rome is the most beautiful city I’ve been too. I fell in love with the old structures, and couldn’t believe the Parthenon is right outside of a subway stop. Unbelievable.

I live in the suburbs and love this City! If you have a chance while you are here, you should do the Chicago Architecture Foundation’s boat tour– it is about 1.5 hours but totally worth the time. You learn so much and get to see the City from the river. With your planning background, you would be in heaven :)

I live here, so YES! I grew up downtown, and I’m a hardcore Chi-town lover!
We have some amazing architecture here. Chicago is home to some very famous architects: Louis Sullivan, Daniel Burnham, and even Frank Llyod Wright for a time. Anywhere you go downtown, you’ll see stunning works of art just looking at buildings.

Reply

Omigosh! That pizza looks INSANE! It’s hard for me to choose my favorite city architecturally. If we’re staying in the US, its Portland. Canada its Vancouver, BC. I’ve never been to Europe, but since I absolutely love Palladio, Vicenza would be amazing to visit.

That’s one intense pizza! I have never visited Chicago, or many BIG cities in the US. Drivien through them, yes, but not visited. The best architecture I have seen would be in Harrogate, England. In all the places I’ve lived, that was hands down the best in terms of the downtown atmosphere. The buildings were historic, and the churches and castles in the surrounding area were beautiful.

Reply

Amanda August 13, 2010 at 9:58 am

I’ve been to Chicago several times and tried all of the “top” deep dish pizza places and Gino’s is my absolute favorite! So jealous of your delicious pizza. Architecturally my favorite city is Paris, because it truly is one of the most beautiful cities.

Going back in a couple of weeks to visit a grad school friend, and I’m excited to have more time to just tour the city this time. I haven’t been to chi-town since I was a kid, though I grew up in Indiana, not far. They have fantastic pizza. I know there’s a NYC vs Chi-Town pizza war, but to me, there’s no competition.

wow, i was just in chicago and must have stayed pretty close to where you are b/c i also saw the giant reflective bean AND ate at gino’s!

the hard rock hotel (not the restaurant, the hotel) is near there… and if you get a second to have a drink, the bartender (i think from bolivia) in the restaurant attached is a total riot and makes amazing drinks!! ;)

My parents are from Chicago but I’ve spent a shockingly small amount of time actually in the city. The grandparents now live roughly an hour away, and usually the time spent in the city is in an airport, before I’m whisked away to visit with family.

I have to admit that I don’t really notice architecture, but I had a great time in New York City on Easter enjoying the beauty of the city.

Chicago is great! I love how much diversity there is there from museums and restaurants to the culture and lake!!!

I know you’re going to have an awesome time.

I have never been to Chicago … so far my fave city architecturally is NY (Manhattan to be exact).
