Beautiful Florida

in All Posts

Last night, I joked that moving counts as cardio – but I take that back!  Moving counts as cardio AND strength training.  When I woke up this morning, my arms, back, abs, and legs were absolutely screaming.  I felt like I had ran 22.0-miles and then lifted weights for two hours.  Ouch!

However, I had a sneaking suspicion that moving around a bit would make me feel a lot better, especially since I’m looking at being stuck in a car for 9 hours later.  I decided to take my mother-in-law’s bike for a ride around the neighborhood.

One of these things is not like the other!

Um, yes.  Hybrids/city bikes are MUCH MORE comfortable and fun to ride than road bikes.  I love my road bike for long distances and races, but perhaps I need a city bike, too?  One with a basket, preferably!

I set the bike on the highest resistance and rode around for about 35 minutes through my favorite place in Florida!

‘Twas a wonderful workout!  I’m a firm believer in “something is better than nothing,” and although I didn’t have the energy for a hard workout, I know I’ll appreciate my efforts around 7 PM tonight when I’m somewhere in South Carolina!

Breakfast:

A great Greek Yogurt + cereal mess!  The stars of the show were Great Grains and Cabot’s French Vanilla Greek yogurt.

Plus, sliced almonds and 1/2 a banana.

Why haven’t we left for Charlotte yet?  Well, the England v. Germany match is on, and it’s a priority!  Once it’s over, we’ll be getting in our cars and driving 450 miles to Charlotte.  We can’t go over 55 mph because of the trailer, so we have a ways to go!

Oh, side note:  I’m really digging Death Cab for Cutie lately!  This is my favorite song by them:

Have a wonderful Sunday, and I’ll see you in Charlotte!

Good luck on the last leg of your big move :)I adore your sens of priority!

  • Errign June 27, 2010, 10:33 am

“We Looked Like Giants” is my favorite Death Cab song off the Transatlanticism album 🙂

Safe travels to you & Dr. Husband 🙂

  • Coco @ Opera Girl Cooks June 27, 2010, 10:33 am

If you like Death Cab, try The Postal Service! It’s Ben Gibbard’s collaboration with Dntel, really fun stuff. Their cover of Phil Collins’ “Against All Odds” is one of my favorite things ever.

    • caitlin June 27, 2010, 10:34 am

PS is actually how I found Death Cab!! I listened to the PS CD my entire freshman year of college and love it. 🙂

  • Evan Thomas June 27, 2010, 10:33 am

Hehe, I hope the game isn’t a disappointment! Now that the USA is out, I’m ENG all the way

  • Lauren (Clean Eats in the Dirty South) June 27, 2010, 10:35 am

i love death cab 🙂 my favorite song is “brothers on a hotel bed” from their album plans.
have a safe drive to char-town (not CLT, hahaha)!

  • Karla June 27, 2010, 10:35 am

Ooh England’s not doing too hot so far! They can pull it together though. Right?
I’m more excited for Argentina vs. Mexico later!
    Good luck with the move!

  • Little Bookworm June 27, 2010, 10:36 am

Good luck for the journey later! 🙂

  • Jo June 27, 2010, 10:40 am

FL girl here too! i love hiking and taking in the FL nature!

  • Freya @ Brit Chick Runs June 27, 2010, 10:40 am

Last time I had to do loads of crazy heavy lifting and that I was a bit dead after! It sure does count 🙂
Bah England were 1-0 down last time I looked..too depressing to watch! 😛

  • Sarah June 27, 2010, 10:42 am

Safe travels! Wave to me when you’re driving through Atlanta. I’m a chaplain at Grady Memorial Hospital and I’m on call all day/night.

  • Bridget June 27, 2010, 10:45 am

Have a safe trip! I’m watching the match now…hope that England comes back to win it!

  • AngelaOSG June 27, 2010, 10:51 am

GOODLUCK with your move! That is amazing you got out there and worked out after everything yeseterday.

  • Amy @ Amy Starts To Run June 27, 2010, 11:02 am

Love Death Cab! You should also check out Postal Service if you haven’t already, same lead singer.

Good luck with the rest of the move (55 mph, yikes!, you’ll be there before you know it!

  • Whitney @ Whitinspired June 27, 2010, 11:02 am

The score should be 2-2. England was robbed on that goal. These refs are awful!

  • Rachel @ Suburban Yogini June 27, 2010, 11:03 am

My hybrid bike is awesome, so comfortable and gets me around perfectly. I highly recommend one if you are going to be using a bike to get around. Also I find panniers on the rear rather than a basket on the front is much more streamlined and less wobbly!! 🙂

  • Kelly June 27, 2010, 11:04 am

I definitely think that moving is more strength training than anything else- all that lifting. Still I think you are smart to squeeze in any kind of workout, I always try to before long plane or car rides!

  • jenny June 27, 2010, 11:08 am

i really like death of an interior decorate lately by death cab.

  • Amanda June 27, 2010, 11:10 am

Catlin, I completely agree that moving counts as cardio!! however I know this has nothing to do with your most recent post however I thought you might appreciate it non the less. Yesterday a good friend of mine coordinated the first NEDA walk in Omaha, Ne well NE period. It was an amazing experience having struggled with disordered eating all through high school and a great part of college and still somewhat today. It really reminds me of Operation Beautiful how ED and your book go hand in hand.

    • caitlin June 27, 2010, 11:36 am

How wonderful and important!! Your friend is awesome.

  • Wei-Wei June 27, 2010, 11:20 am

Ooh, I love Death Cab! Apparently the singer has a phobia of fast songs 😀 I’m watching the Germany vs UK game now, and you might hate me for who I’m rooting for… 😛

  • Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg June 27, 2010, 11:22 am

Beautiful trail! I love DCFC– it reminds me of college when I was introduced to them via Seth Cohen 🙂

  • Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine June 27, 2010, 11:28 am

Death Cab is amazing…that song reminds me of high school, when I was obsessed with the album! Hope you enjoy the game and have a safe trip up to Charlotte!

  • Marina June 27, 2010, 11:36 am

What a wonderful place to ride a bike!
    Have a safe trip!

  • M June 27, 2010, 11:43 am

Will you and KATH get to hang out at all together?
Will you bloggers get to overlap at all?
And why is is it you both moved out on the exact same day(of your homes)? That is soooooooo curious!;)

    • caitlin June 27, 2010, 11:53 am

hehe yes we will overlap a lot, actually. we have plans to do dinner on tuesday! yayyy!

  • hemp jogger June 27, 2010, 11:48 am

    love that bike!
girl, i’m so glad you discovered this album/band. i’ve been diggin’ them for years, and that particular album is my absolute favorite. so many memories tied w/ it…was some of the best times of my life. the lyrics are gorgeous and meaningful, but the melodies are light for whatever mood you’re feeling. enjoy 🙂 and be safe driving.

  • Alyssa June 27, 2010, 11:52 am

deathcabbb, always nice to see seattle reppin in a different state. 🙂

    With love from WA,
    Alyssa

  • Tiffany June 27, 2010, 12:09 pm

I’m not sure if my first comment went through, but in any case, GOOD LUCK with your move today!

And will you be rocking DCFC during your drive? I love them and they remind me of all the shows my friend would drag me to in college. It’s great to see how far they’ve come, even if some people think they’ve “sold out” (i don’t). I still love them and was pleasantly surprised to hear them on the New Moon soundtrack =)

    • Tiffany June 27, 2010, 12:10 pm

oh, and England had a good run =( I was rooting for them today!

  • Tonyne @ The Unlikely Success Story June 27, 2010, 12:15 pm

Love, love that song! Sorry about England by the way. :/ Safe travels! We will be lucky to have you in NC!! 🙂

  • Cassie @ A Very Busy Mind June 27, 2010, 12:18 pm

I love your “something is better than nothing” attitude; I need to practice it more. Intuitively, I know it’s true, but I really struggle with the all-or-nothing mindset.

  • Miranda @ MirandasJeans June 27, 2010, 12:28 pm

I am with you some is better than none. You never regret a workout, but almost always regret not working out.

Good luck on the drive to NC.

  • laurie June 27, 2010, 12:49 pm

that trail looks safe! i am new to biking and looking for pretty, relaxing places to ride. where is that trail? (I am in ormond beach).
    🙂
    Laurie

    • caitlin June 28, 2010, 2:32 pm

It’s in Grand Haven (Which is gated, unfortunately). 🙁 There’s a good trail off of Colbert Lane!

  • Julie @SavvyEats June 27, 2010, 12:55 pm

Yes, get a hybrid bike! I love my road bike for long rides, but the hybrid is so much better for things like running errands. We put a rack on the back of my hybrid that we can put bags on, so we take our hybrids when we need to get groceries, etc!

  • Courtney (Pancakes & Postcards) June 27, 2010, 1:01 pm

I have been digging out the old school Death Cab for the last few weeks too! My favorites are Transatlanticism, We Looked Like Giants (the first half), and Grapevine Fires… well, those for the time being.

Tell your hubby I’m sorry about England. Pretty lame, but they got robbed on that one goal too… darn refs!

  • Helen June 27, 2010, 1:13 pm

I hope you don’t regret watching the England match instead of driving now! We were rubbish!! Hope you get on ok driving up to Charlotte.

  • Caroline June 27, 2010, 1:20 pm

Love that song too! Good tunes for your long drive…Also I totally feel you on the sore body post moving, those stairs are what really did if for you because I had a similar experience moving my cousin out of a 4th floor apartment a few weeks ago. Basically couldn’t move! Good for you for getting out and moving though. Have a safe drive to Charlotte!

  • Erin Couture June 27, 2010, 2:11 pm

where is the trail in your photos? it’s beautiful!

    • caitlin June 28, 2010, 2:32 pm

In Grand Haven community in Palm Coast, FL

  • Sarah for Real June 27, 2010, 2:33 pm

Just wanted to mention, we had a uhaul just like that and we did 60mph with no problem.

I’m not sure if 5 mph makes much of a difference over 450 miles… that’s too much math for a Sunday morning, but I just wouldn’t worry about the “55 MPH” that’s printed on the trailer too much.

  • Ariffa June 27, 2010, 2:35 pm

I got a bike like that for super cheap on ebay! i love ittt, and i LOVE death cab =)) good luck on the big move

  • kirsten June 27, 2010, 2:46 pm

yay I love Death Cab! I hear you on the cardio and strength training, I moved from a first floor apartment to a 3rd floor walk up yesterday and I feel like I was hit by a bus today! Good luck on the rest of your move!!

  • lauren @ Eater not a runner June 27, 2010, 2:57 pm

Ugh the england match was SO depressing. Sorry!

  • Kelly June 27, 2010, 3:34 pm

Yay for moving to Charlotte! Let me know if and when you want to schedule a run!

We watched the US vs. Ghana game yesterday, which was totally disappointing. I love Death Cab too and that’s a great song. My favorite is “I’ll Follow You Into the Dark.” It’s so sweet.

  • Red Head, Yellow Dog June 27, 2010, 3:45 pm

I’m slightly obsessed with death cab so this makes me like you even more 🙂

  • Jessica June 27, 2010, 3:53 pm

You’re moving an hour and a half away from me! It’s SO pretty in Charlotte, I think you’l love it!

  • ida June 27, 2010, 4:14 pm

a cruiser bike would be lots of fun, and great for running errands with.

  • Jenn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) June 27, 2010, 4:48 pm

  • Heather June 27, 2010, 4:56 pm

looks like a beautiful place to ride!

  • Candice June 27, 2010, 5:19 pm

I’ve never listened to DCFC before, but I have always heard a lot of great things. I’ll definitely have to try it out!

Hope you have a safe drive and a fun arrival into Charlotte!

  • Kathleen June 27, 2010, 5:30 pm

I ADORE Deathcab for Cutie! I saw them live a couple times (favorite time was when they headlined at Lollapalooza in Chicago a few years ago) and I cannot believe you like them, too! Title and Registration and Transatlanticism are my favs off that album and I adore everything off Plans, I Will Possess Your Heart off Narrow Stairs and Meet Me on the Equinox from the New Moon soundtrack 🙂 I’m a little obssessed.

  • Lisa (bakebikeblog) June 27, 2010, 5:38 pm

Good luck with the Road Trip!!!
I too go by the “something is better than nothing” when it comes to exercise! Particularly if you know that you are going to be in a car all day 🙂 Save travels!

  • Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) June 27, 2010, 6:39 pm

    I agree…moving is DEFINITELY a workout. No joke. 😀

    Have a safe drive! 😀

  • Ellen June 27, 2010, 7:07 pm

How’s the hub feeling after that game?? It was SO terrible. Now that the US and England is out, I have no one to cheer for! Such a bummer.

you’re getting some great workouts in for moving time. hope you’re not stressed!

  • Brie @ Brie Fit June 27, 2010, 7:19 pm

Oh man, last time we moved, I was in the midst of a serious weight training program, and all my muscles were fine EXCEPT for my forearms. Seriously, dude, they killed me for weeks. You have my sympathy!

  • Julie @ Pickley Pear June 27, 2010, 7:50 pm

Love the bike! That’s awesome that you went for a ride – probably just what your body needed. Being cramped in the car for that long is no good any way you look at it. I hope you are getting close by now!!

  • Rebecca June 27, 2010, 8:00 pm

That bike is awesome! I know what you mean about moving. I was sore the day after my move, too! Have a safe trip!

  • Diana @ frontyardfoodie June 27, 2010, 8:27 pm

Oh goodness, that’s a long way to go at 55mph! Hopefully it goes fast though:)

Looks like a super yummy breakfast!

  • Katharine June 27, 2010, 8:52 pm

Good luck on the rest of your drive!

  • Laura (Starloz) June 27, 2010, 8:58 pm

I’ve been debating getting a hybrid bike to ride around – specifically one to take to my local farmer’s market!

  • Susie June 28, 2010, 1:34 am

I LOVEEEEEE Death Cab and this is my favorite song too! I haven’t been able to read blogs for awhile, but I came on today to sneak a peek at Maggie and James. I missed them! hehe 🙂

  • Marissa June 28, 2010, 9:27 am

Yeah for SC! Hahah, that’s my state. I love my bike! I never get to ride it though because I can never get anybody to go with me, and its just not safe to ride the empty country roads around here by myself.

  • Heather June 28, 2010, 2:04 pm

I LOVE Death Cab too! Pretty sure I was also introduced via the OC. It’s funny because I was obsessed in high school and was reminded of them recently. I’ve been listening to them all day. 🙂

  • Marika June 29, 2010, 4:55 am

Death Cab is awesome and when I got that album I just listened to it on repeat all night. It was amazing. Hard to pick a favorite song by them… I love “Jealousy Rides With Me”, and “Transatlanticism” makes me cry.
