Ten hours later, I’ve arrived!

If you guessed that I was visiting my mom in Tennessee, you were right.  🙂

My mom moved to a little town in Tennessee called Powell when I was 19 (I lived in Pittsburgh at the time).  She’s a country girl at heart, and I think my hometown of Miami was just a little too much for her (it’s too much for me, too!).

Actually – I’ll share some of my mom’s back story!  She first worked as a nurse, and then she ended up working at a huge corporation for 17 years – 60 hours a week.  It was a super important, anxiety-producing job.  She was a VERY involved mom, but I also remember her as always working (I felt bad for her more than anything else).  So, when she qualified for retirement, she quit her high-pressure job, sold her townhome, moved to Tennessee, bought a nice country house, and now works at a little boutique for spending cash.  Her life is 180 degrees different than what it used to be, and I’m really happy for her.  🙂

The quiet pace of Tennessee is much more her style:

IMG_6345

But I don’t think she likes this cold weather! Brrr.

The dogs don’t know what to make of it, either.  James and Maggie haven’t seen snow for over 3 years.

IMG_6343

(Yes, my dogs wear jackets.  Go ahead and hate on me if you want, but they get cold easily! :))

The drive up was pretty uneventful, actually.  I thought it would be a torturous 650 miles, but it wasn’t bad at all.  I ate most my snacks (orange, granola bar, Cheerios) and the cous cous mix, but I saved the Chobani and banana for later.  My mom called to say she was making a home-cooked dinner!

IMG_6356

I had homemade veggie soup, two pieces of cornbread, and sweet baked apples.

My mom and I are going to watch the Grammy’s, and then I’m hitting the hay early.  Mom is working tomorrow, so I’m going to go the gym in the morning and spend the rest of the day working out of her living room.  🙂

If you could quit your job and move ANYWHERE, where would it be?  I would LOVE to live in Napa Valley!

OMG his little blanket is ADORABLE!

  • Meghan@traveleatlove January 31, 2010, 7:22 pm

I would move to Sonoma or Napa for sure! Looks like a lovely trip, enjoy!

  • Sara @ ActiveGal January 31, 2010, 7:22 pm

If I could quit my job and move anywhere I would move to Florida! Just like you 🙂 haha I have lived in NC all my life and I would love somewhere warmer in the winters. The boyfriend however LOVES snow and cold weather so I’m not so sure how he would enjoy that.

  • emily January 31, 2010, 7:24 pm

    New York City!

  • Amanda (Two Boos Who Eat) January 31, 2010, 7:25 pm

I would either move to Maui, Hawaii or Big Sur, California. I would love to live near the ocean!

have fun with your mom! 🙂

  • Dori January 31, 2010, 7:25 pm

I love pups in coats! Adorable.

  • Hillary [Nutrition Nut on the Run] January 31, 2010, 7:27 pm

What a beautiful home she has. Enjoy your time with your mama.

    Napa Valley is so gorgeous.

  • Ashley January 31, 2010, 7:27 pm

I just did in September. Charlotte to Colorado! We’re loving it! =)

  • Jordan January 31, 2010, 7:27 pm

    Orlando!

  • Angela (Oh She Glows) January 31, 2010, 7:28 pm

    CAPRI!!!!!!!!!!

Love the dog jackets. I don’t see anything wrong with it…animals get cold too! Esp. FLORIDA ones. 😉

  • Laura @ Strong and Steady January 31, 2010, 7:29 pm

    Yay dogs in jackets!

I spent my first 23 years living with cold and snow. After living somewhere warm and snowless for only 6 months, I’m convinced I can never go back! Bad winters realllly cramp the parts of my lifestyle that keep me happy and healthy.

So, I guess I’d want to keep living here!

  • Angela (Oh She Glows) January 31, 2010, 7:29 pm

ps- thanks for reminding me of the grammy’s.. off to watch!!

  • Allie (Live Laugh Eat) January 31, 2010, 7:30 pm

Awwwwww!!! You’re too cute. I love just hopping in the car and takin’ a road trip HOME. My trek is only 4 hours but it’s still quite a drive. There’s nothing like couching it up with Momma. Enjoy your spontaneous trip!

I would move to Hawaii or London or Cali or….the list goes on 🙂

  • Jessica @ WHY DONTCHA RUN January 31, 2010, 7:32 pm

Aw, your poor puppies DO need jackets…. they’re Florida babies! 😉 Bless their little hearts. LOL – I think my Florida puppy would freeze at even the thought of snow. Have fun with your momma!

  • Laura Georgina January 31, 2010, 7:33 pm

I’m with Angela on the dog coats–nothing wrong with keeping your furbabies warm! (I do draw the line at dogs in strollers, though–I’ve seen it enough times!)

I’d pack my bags and move to Seville, Spain. I lived there when I was younger and would do anything to go back 🙂

  • Mary @ Fit this girl January 31, 2010, 7:34 pm

Minneapolis!! Or Rochester where my Mom is and where the Mayo Clinic is. OR I would move to Germany. 🙂

  • Jennifer January 31, 2010, 7:35 pm

    Palma de Mallorca, Spain!

  • Whitney @ whitinspired.wordpress.com January 31, 2010, 7:36 pm

Easy…Southern California. Or somewhere with only one season. And that season would be summer. I can’t stand cold weather!

  • Julie January 31, 2010, 7:38 pm

I want to live in the country! Some place down south…like Texas. People down south are so nice and things are so much more relaxed than Boston.

  • haya January 31, 2010, 7:38 pm

somewhere where there are mountains and ocean! and lots of sunshine. also, i like plenty of greenery and 4 distinct seasons. i am not sure such a place exists 😉
but mostly i am happy where i am. i sometimes complain about the -27 million° days, but if we didn’t have that, i wouldn’t be able to go skating on the pond across the street, which is pretty magical.

  • Vicki January 31, 2010, 7:41 pm

We lived twenty minutes from Napa for a few years. Beautiful!

If I could live anywhere it would be upstate NY. I love it there.

What a nice dinner your mom made!

  • Jayce January 31, 2010, 7:44 pm

I would live in NC or VA or TN in a house like your mom’s! Wow! Somewhere with seasons, but not the harshest winters. Have fun!

  • Meredith January 31, 2010, 7:47 pm

our moms sound similar! she moved from the beach to the mountains when I was a freshman in college and is a nurse too! she worked at a big office at the beach and now she works at the local hospital where she lives and has a MUCH slower life.

  • Laura Smith January 31, 2010, 7:48 pm

florida, california..anywhere warm and in the city, lincoln NE is just not enough!

    • Katie - Life Discombobulated January 31, 2010, 8:01 pm

I live in Lincoln, too! : ) And I agree… A little warmth would be AWESOME right now!

  • Alisha January 31, 2010, 7:49 pm

Haha, your doggies would definitely not enjoy living in Canada, we just had a giant snow storm over the weekend and right now the temperature is -23 with wind. My dog Ben is a mini poodle and I like to let his curls grow out just because I want him to stay warm during these winter months. Some people look at my dog and then me and I know they think I’m a bad mom for not trimming his fur, but its for his own good, haha. Right now I’d say he has about 3 inches of fur on him, I think he looks so cute, like a little polar bear.
Wow, see how I ramble about my dog? I’ll stop, haha.

    • Jennifer January 31, 2010, 8:04 pm

Depends where in Canada, we’ve had no snow and it’s been sunny most days over here in Victoria, BC!

  • Karla January 31, 2010, 7:49 pm

How fun! Enjoy your time with your mom!

  • Erin (Travel, Eat, Repeat) January 31, 2010, 7:52 pm

Aw, homecooked dinner with your mom. Fab! 🙂

I’d love to move back to London for a while, or spend a year living in a small English town. Seems peaceful.

  • Alisha January 31, 2010, 7:52 pm

Oh yeah, no one should hate you for putting a jacket on your dogs, mine has a winter jacket and a rain coat just because his curls absorb so much water and I hate the wet dog smell. Plus Ben even has a pair of blue suade winter boats, haha, some dogs just need extra love and care.
    Ok, now I’ll stop.

    • caitlin January 31, 2010, 7:53 pm

maggie has a pink turtleneck. yes, a dachshund in a turtleneck.

  • Jessica @ How Sweet It Is January 31, 2010, 7:57 pm

I would live in Northern Michigan on the lake..we vacation there every summer and it’s absolutely amazing!

  • Mellissa January 31, 2010, 7:59 pm

I don’t want to live anywhere- I just want to travel around the world!!! Staying in amazing places and visiting even more amazing countries.

  • Lee January 31, 2010, 7:59 pm

London. Or San Francisco, although I’ve never been there. I think I’d like it though.

  • Amanda (modernation) January 31, 2010, 8:01 pm

So fun – yay road trips! If I could move anywhere and bring the people I love with me, I’d move to Italy. Would love to have a big villa and a vineyard in my back yard! I also want to move to and run a farm when we retire. Also would move to Lake Tahoe! I love so many different places!

  • Evan Thomas January 31, 2010, 8:02 pm

    The doggie coats are adorable

  • Katie - Life Discombobulated January 31, 2010, 8:02 pm

I’d move to Maine or Eugene, Oregon, and I’d go to Sanibel, FL during the winters… Ahhhhhh….

  • Kathleen January 31, 2010, 8:04 pm

So glad you got there safely!!! I adore the puppies in clothes! It’s that thin Florida blood you guys have down there (as opposed to the sludge I call blood from living in MN)!

  • Andrea @ Run, Eat, Date, Sleep January 31, 2010, 8:04 pm

If I could quit my job and move anywhere, it would be Orlando! I actually lived there a few years ago and worked for Disney, but I moved home to be with a guy. I’ve been wanting to move back, and I will be this summer!

Your mom’s house looks so inviting!

  • Lauren January 31, 2010, 8:06 pm

FUNNY STORY……I just did that in October! I took a job right after college in May and was extremely unhappy….after 4ish months of 6 day work weeks I called it quits and my fiance and I moved from New England to Texas to start over!

I’m starting a great job in my field tomorrow, and my fiance has already been promoted in his new company (after being laid off in New Hampshire).

It was a great decision all around 🙂

  • Cynthia (It All Changes) January 31, 2010, 8:13 pm

My dogs wear coats too so I don’t hate on ya!

If I could quit my job and move anywhere I would go live in Spain. I was so happy and relaxed there and would love to live there permanently.

  • Island Girl Eats January 31, 2010, 8:13 pm

Well done to your Mom for choosing to enjoy life.

I put Scruffy in a sweater when we were up in Tampa at Christmas time. It was like 50 degrees! I thought that if I found it cold, so did he.

I think that I would move up to Tampa, we love it there so much. It’s our favourite place!

  • mackattack January 31, 2010, 8:13 pm

I didn’t know that there is a town named Powell! That’s my maiden name! That sounds like an awesome life your mom has made for herself! I’d like to live on the beach. A quiet beach town and watch the waves roll in…

  • Marla January 31, 2010, 8:15 pm

    IRELAND!!!!!!!!!

  • Sarah January 31, 2010, 8:15 pm

Paris! It’s absolutely chic and beautiful with amazing food 🙂

But I’d miss my family-so I’d have to be rich and be able to fly them to visit me a lot!

  • Marla January 31, 2010, 8:15 pm

west coast of Ireland, that is!

  • Joy January 31, 2010, 8:19 pm

I grew up in Alabama, and I’ve lived in Atlanta and New York City and Nyack….so I’m itching to either move to California to be closer to the beach and proximity to Utah/Lake Tahoe for skiing and Napa Valley (yessss!) OR I really have a fondness for the New England states…I’d love to spend time living in Massachusetts. I just spent my 30th Birthday visiting Mass, NY, CT & RI and I went skiing in Great Barrington – such a cute town, and I love Cambridge! <3

I grew up visiting Tennessee several times a year – since Gatlinburg is only 5 hours away from me and Nashville is only 3-4hrs. I love TN. The Smokey Mountains are beautiful! Enjoy your time there!

  • Scorpio Woman January 31, 2010, 8:20 pm

I’d live in a place where it’s not too cold and no snow. I’d spend winter in Florida LOL

  • Jamie January 31, 2010, 8:20 pm

Anywhere? Boulder, Colorado – that way I could ski everyday in the winter and hike/bike in the summer! Glad you made it safely and enjoy your weekend with your mom!

  • Penny January 31, 2010, 8:23 pm

Awww, how nice that your drove 10 hours to spend time with your mom. She sounds like an awesome mother.

  • Kirsten January 31, 2010, 8:23 pm

Buenos Aires! Or London, but I’ve had enough un-sunny weather to last a lifetime!

  • Lindsay Perrone (goodiesgalore) January 31, 2010, 8:31 pm

Who could hate on cute pups in jackets? My little lady loves her sweaters. Your moms home looks so welcoming! I love that feeling of arriving home. I think I’d move someplace that I’ve never been like Italy or Alaska.

  • Marissa January 31, 2010, 8:36 pm

Yum! I love corn bread! What a cute lil jacket 🙂

  • laura dishes January 31, 2010, 8:37 pm

I would move to Southern CA or somewhere in Arizona… I love the West Coast, but I think that it would be hard to be so far away from my family!

  • kate January 31, 2010, 8:40 pm

id like to be in some remote land, preferably an island in Greece. have fun with your mom, its so hard to live far away from your family:(

  • Jessica @ The Process of Healing January 31, 2010, 8:46 pm

Dinner sounds so so comforting! Corn bread is awesome. I don’t understand why some people hate it?! And have you tried Recipe Girl’s pumpkin cornbread???? Oh so good!

James’s jacket is cute! Poor thing, he looks petrified!

And it sounds like your mom has it made now 🙂 perfect!

  • Gracie @ Girl Meets Health January 31, 2010, 8:47 pm

    Oh gosh, that’s a good question. Can I make a list? =)
    In no particular order:
    1. San Diego
    2. Burlington, Vermont
    3. Vienna, Austria
    4. Miami, Florida (lucky you, haha!)
    5. FIJI!

Oh gosh. The list could go on. Sadly I’ve only been to ONE of the above locations :/

  • Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg January 31, 2010, 8:51 pm

Dude, whatever, nothing to hate on– they NEED jackets in cold weather! My dog has on a fleece tech vest as I type this…and he looks damn cute! And cozy, too!

  • Erin @ Erin Eats and Exercises January 31, 2010, 8:54 pm

Love the doggie jackets! Are such a must!

  • lauren @ Eater not a runner January 31, 2010, 8:55 pm

I would probably move to Belgium. I love it there!

  • Melissa S. January 31, 2010, 8:56 pm

Australia!!!! or fl. i’m not picky. 😉

  • Lily @ Lily's Health Pad January 31, 2010, 9:00 pm

I love visiting my momma 🙂
If I could move anywhere, it would be to Paris, France.

  • Katie@ Two Lives, One Lifestyle January 31, 2010, 9:03 pm

If I could move anywhere with no job.. I would probably move to NYC because so many of my best friends are there. Or I would buy a plane and pop all over the place!

  • Foy Update - Cook. Garden. Write. Repeat. January 31, 2010, 9:04 pm

This is something I am curius about. When you are traveling do you just go into any gym and they’ll give you a day pass? How does that work. I’m always too chicken to find out.

    • caitlin January 31, 2010, 9:44 pm

I have called ahead to the realllly nice and swanky gym near my mom’s and asked if i can buy a week long pass. when i visited her this summer, i just ran outside, but that’s obviously not an option right now! most gyms will let travelers buy a week-long or daily pass.

  • Heather @ Side of Sneakers January 31, 2010, 9:05 pm

How fun you’re visiting your mom! I’d want to live somewhere in the northwest—but only when it’s dry and sunny 😉

  • Erin January 31, 2010, 9:14 pm

That’s so great you can visit your mom on a whim like that! Lucky duck 🙂

I’m with you about Napa Valley. Actually, Santa Rosa, Sonoma, or Napa would be fine with me.

  • Kristin P January 31, 2010, 9:17 pm

I love James’ little coat! So cute!!!

  • Jolene (www.everydayfoodie.ca) January 31, 2010, 9:22 pm

Your mom’s house is ABSOLUTELY gorgeous!!! I would love to move somewhere HOTT!! Like Hawaii 🙂

  • Brynn January 31, 2010, 10:17 pm

I’d definitely move to Hawaii and live in the water for awhile! I couldn’t stay forever because I don’t love the heat but I would like to snorkel until I get sick of it. 🙂

  • Olga @ Healthing It January 31, 2010, 10:21 pm

    What a good question.

I’d probably move to the countryside in France…I’d just eat according to the Michelin Guide, drink wine and go to Paris when I missed the City…ah, a girl can dream 🙂

  • jodie January 31, 2010, 10:27 pm

    I would move to Italy.

  • Lisa (bakebikeblog) January 31, 2010, 10:34 pm

Congrats on the drive 🙂 Glad to hear that you made it safely?
Hmm anywhere that was warm….Spain perhaps 🙂

  • Katy ( The Balanced Foodie ) January 31, 2010, 10:45 pm

I dress up Leo in a vest when it’s super cold here! He was shivering one time. No hating going on here. Glad you made it safe!

As for anywhere I could choose? Napa is my first choice too!!!! We went there for our honeymoon and when I got back as headed back to class one of my professors asked what we do with a million dollars and I said “buy a house in Napa”. Absolutely. Martha’s Vineyard is my second, and Charlotte my third. I think. 😉

  • caronae January 31, 2010, 10:53 pm

    Tennessee/your mom’s story sound very happy 🙂
I would move to Oregon/Washington/SF. A moderate climate is a must!
    Have a happy Monday!

  • Jenna January 31, 2010, 11:00 pm

    Have fun with your mom!

  • Rebecca January 31, 2010, 11:32 pm

    Savannah, GA for sure!

  • Heather (Heather's Dish) January 31, 2010, 11:37 pm

i would totally move to europe somewhere…or the south, somewhere near a beach 🙂

  • Tyler Ramey January 31, 2010, 11:43 pm

Your like an hour from me!!!! Too bad you can’t come take a spin class!!! 😉

  • Dan January 31, 2010, 11:55 pm

    Hey Catlin,
I met you while filming for TV (I was the sound guy)! I loved James and Maggie, and I will not hate on you for the jackets, those dogs are awesome!

I just wanted to let you know that you inspired me! I am now starting to exercise and eat healthier and am also blogging about it! I used to be very athletic, and hope to get even half way back to there!

Glad to hear that things are going well!

    • caitlin February 1, 2010, 8:48 am

HI DAN!!!! How are you? Awesome to hear you are getting back into shape. Weren’t you a hockey player before? By the way, I still haven’t seen my clip. 🙁 I wonder if it will ever come out!

Going to check out your site now!

      • Dan February 1, 2010, 9:09 am

Yes, that is me! It has been a while since I have been in the type of shape I was in while playing sports!

        You have an amazing memory!

Sorry to hear your stuff hasnt aired yet, I am sure it will find a home somewhere some time!

  • Anne @thefitbridesmaid February 1, 2010, 12:03 am

So I had to look up where Powell is and it’s right by Knoxville (my boyfriend is from Oak Ridge and we go there all the time). Was everyone freaking out about the snow?

Well I think that I would like to move to someplace on the eastern shore like Virginia/North Carolina/South Carolina. Warmth sounds so good right now!

    • caitlin February 1, 2010, 8:49 am

My mom is from Oak Ridge! And yes she said people were freaking out and buying out the grocery store, LOL. for 4 mere inches!

  • Kerry (Running on Faith) February 1, 2010, 12:06 am

I already LIVE where I want to be – SF Bay Area 🙂 Consider me a tour guide if you ever QUIT the job and MOVE out here!

  • Anna February 1, 2010, 2:13 am

I live about 2 hrs from where I would want to live. I’d move to the coast (Nor Cal coast) so I could wake up every morning and see the water.

  • Freya @ foodfitnessandfreya.wordpress.com February 1, 2010, 2:51 am

Awh she has such a traditional looking house – that’s what I picture American houses to look like 🙂
Love that dinner too, cornbread and sweet baked apples..wow 🙂
If I could live anywhere – USA hands down!!! I seriously need to find a nice American man to marry… 🙁

  • Dynamics February 1, 2010, 3:21 am

Yeah for the jacket. My “doberman” wore a “horse blanket” all the time. I had her name embroidered on the jacket. She refused to go outside without it on. How come your doggies does not have booties? Do their feet not freeze? I always wondered about that.

    • caitlin February 1, 2010, 8:50 am

Aww that is so cute. I don’t know about their feet. I never got them shoes in Pittsburgh. James seemed to be ok with his feet in the snow. I touched them after and they weren’t even that cold! Maybe they are used to extreme temps because they walk around barefoot on hot Florida parking lots? LOL

  • Jessica @ Fit Chick Wannabe February 1, 2010, 5:19 am

I would either live in Maine (my family and I used to rent a cabin on the lake there every year – it’s so peaceful!) or Aruba

  • Jenna @ RunEatRide February 1, 2010, 6:22 am

Love the dog jackets! Im still a student so I dont even have a job yet but I would like to live
Moncton , New Brunswick. I dont want to be to far from my family!

  • alexe @ soyaetchocolat February 1, 2010, 6:31 am

I love living in Montreal (Quebec) but would still like to move somewhere warmer… I seriously thought about moving to Australia (I have friends there) but I would miss my family to much. I probably will move at some point in my life though because I deeply hate winter… It would help a lot if I could be more fluent in English!

  • Jessie February 1, 2010, 6:42 am

Good for your mom! Very brave!

I’d move out to CO, where my dad lives. Great hiking and skiing and such a relaxed way of life.

  • christie, honoring health February 1, 2010, 7:25 am

I would love to live in the Outer Banks, NC, I really love it there. I wouldn’t mind living in Waikiki Beach either as I REALLY loved it there but I don’t think I would like being that far away from everyone I know.

  • Rosey Rebecca February 1, 2010, 7:26 am

I love long road trips. Your dogs are so cute with the jackets on! Glad you had a safe trip!

  • Diana (Mymarblerye) February 1, 2010, 7:41 am

I live in the middle of NOWHERE. My dream is to move to nyc…trying to make that happen in a year. 🙂 Enjoy time with your mom!

  • Babycakes February 1, 2010, 7:55 am

As soon as I’m finished with grad school, I plan to move to Arizona. I’ve lived in Boston my entire life and can’t wait to get away from the freezing cold and snow!

  • Sarah February 1, 2010, 10:00 am

Ohh, wine country, a woman with my own heart!! I lived in Sonoma for 4 years and I will move back there the fist moment it is an option. You should try Napas neighbor valley, its more of a home than a tourist spot.

  • Jenny February 1, 2010, 10:23 am

Aw, I love that you took a trip to see your mom! Thanks for sharing her backstory with us, she sounds amazing, and I’m glad to read that she is settled in such a relaxing life now…mom’s deserve it!

    Hope you’re enjoying the day!

  • Sarah February 1, 2010, 10:29 am

Wow! I really enjoyed reading about your mum’s story – I think it’s great that she’s following her heart.
If I could live anywhere in the world I think I’d pick Namibia or Tanzania – I’d love to live in a rural area, like a safari park, but near enough to the sea too.
    *sigh*

  • Carly February 1, 2010, 11:06 am

Bowser wears jackets, too! Except he HATES them, and LOVES the cold weather. He has a pimpin’ wardrobe, though.

I would live in England, in a small cottage on acres and acres of farmland. With a vegetable garden. It would be in a rural area but close enough to London that I could go on a day trip. And I would write and eat at local pubs and make friends with the elderly yet still spry bartender. And I’d have electricity but would choose to spend most of my evenings in candlelight, pretending that I was Jane Austen. Other than that, I haven’t really thought this one through … 😉

You’re right down the road from me! I live in Knoxville.

I’ve lived in the Napa Valley. 🙂 I finished college at a tiny school up above St. Helena. It’s such a beautiful place to live, especially in the fall. But if I were to live anywhere, I’d live in Ireland. It’s so green, and the people are very friendly and laid back.

I would love to move to Champery, Switzerland. It is absolutely beautiful there. So clean, and the people there are so nice. I visited once about 10 years ago and I always think about going back.

Anywhere? Hmm. We lived in TX for 17 years, and we loved it, but the summers were brutal & I was always eaten alive by mosquitoes.

Hawaii might be nice. I’d really like to have 2 homes, somewhere with a mild winter, and somewhere with a mild summer, but that’s hard when you love your cats.

My dogs wear jackets, too. They’re long haired chihuahuas, btw. Chester was born in TX, so this winter has been his first real taste of snow (we’d get ice & snow in TX occasionally, but it’s not the same). Lola actually came from MN. They hate their jackets, but they do get cold. We don’t put them on just to let them outside, only when we go for our walks.
